Chapter 1: Abuse

Solar groaned. This was the sixth time he had tripped on his way to Ponyville. But he knew it was worth it. All of his childhood friends lived there. Nyx, Snowdrop, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Safe Haven. He hadn’t wanted to move, but his parents threatened to beat him if he ran away. The beatings had been going on for a while now, ever since his parents had started drinking excessively. He didn’t even know exactly how old he was or when his birthday was, as his parents told him only sissies have birthdays. But what had caused him to run away was them almost killing his little sister. He had grabbed his dad’s wrist, judo flipped him, and punched his mom out cold. Afterwards he had packed up a couple months worth of clothes into his favorite backpack, which never got any heavier than when you first put it on, and it was bigger on the inside. He had then looked in his moms wallet, grabbed several thousand bits, went to the nearest train station, and bought a ticket from Manehatten to Canterlot.

That had been a month ago. He had had fun during his time in Canterlot, but he kept meeting this one annoying unicorn that was almost always boasting that she was more great and powerful than me, an alicorn Now he was almost out of bits, almost no clean clothing, and no clean water. He was heading to Ponyville to see if his childhood friends still lived there. Within twenty minutes, he had reached Fluttershy’s collage. I knocked loudly on the door. When she answered the door, she greeted me with great enthusiasm, but also with great confusion.

“Solar Eclipse! But I thought you lived in Manehatten now?” Fluttershy squeaked, happy to see one of her longest childhood friends. However, she was confused. why was he here? Did his parents bring him? Of course, she didn’t know how abusive his parents were. That why he wore his mane down, to cover half of his face. He had gotten many scars over the years from all of his beatings.

Solar Eclipse sighed. It was good to be among friends again. Fluttershy had called everyone of his old friends over as soon as he had a drink of water and could talk with coughing. All of his friends were there: His alicorn friend, Nyx, the inventor of the Snowflake, Snowdrop, Rainbow Dash, the only pegasus to ever create a Sonic Rainboom in Equestrian history, and Element of Loyalty, and Fluttershy, the wielder of the Element of Kindness. However, there was someone missing.

“Where’s Safe Haven?” Solar asked everyone. Rainbow admitted that they had kept something from him in his letters. Safe Haven had abusive parents too, and was now in the care of social services. They wouldn’t allow her out at this time. Finally, Nyx asked the question that was on everyone’s mind.

“So Solar, why are you here? I thought you were still in Manehatten?” Solar sighed. It was time to tell everyone why he was here.

“ Two reasons. One is the same reason Safe Haven’s in a foster home. But that’s not important right now. The important reason is……….. I think I have a crush on Safe Haven”

Solar grinned sheepishly. His friends had been staring for the past two minutes, and honestly, it was starting to get unnerving. He HAD told Rainbow and Fluttershy about his crush of Safe Haven, but they had obviously forgotten. However, what had shocked them was something he had never told anybody. That he had abusive parents. He had been friends with them for six years, and never told a single one.

Finally, Fluttershy snapped out of her confusion.

“Um… How badly did they hurt you?” Fluttershy asked, reverting to her automatic quite mode. “T-That is, if it’s not to painful for you to talk about….” Solar answered by lifting up his mane, revealing the scars he had obtained from the years.

“Oh my, are you ok?” Fluttershy timidly asked, still in what Solar had come to refer to as “Shy Mode”. Solar sighed, not wanting to re-live his horrible past.

”Look, I don’t want to talk about it right now. Can you please just tell me where I can find Safe Haven?” Solar asked the group. Nyx replied to his question,

“She’s in a foster home just North of the Golden Oaks Library.” Thanks Nyx” Solar said gratefully. He started to get up, but stumbled. He had injured his leg on his walk to Ponyville.

Rainbow finally remembered the question she was going to ask Solar before he had revealed his secret about his parents.

“Hey Solar, why didn’t you just fly here? You are an alicorn after all.” Solar took on a slightly pained expression.

“Because…...Because……. I never learned to fly, okay?! Happy? My parents hated me, and tied my wings down at home. They threatened that if they ever heard that I had been flying around at school and stuff, that they would ground me. Permanently.”

Fluttershy switched from “Shy Mode” to “Caretaker Mode”. “Well then, you’re just going to have to stay here for the next couple of days, so that leg can heal up.”

Solar sighed again. He wanted to see Safe Haven as soon as possible, but he knew Fluttershy was right. If he wanted to see her, he was going to need his leg to heal up. It was quite a walk from Fluttershy’s cottage to the library, and the place where Safe Haven was even further.

Solar finally spoke again

“Hey, can we talk about not so depressing? Like when you and Nyx started dating, Snowdrop?” Solar wore a devious smile.

Snowdrop gasped. “Who told you?” Solar grinned again. “You did, just now.” Both Snowdrop and Nyx blushed heavily. “How did you guess?” Nyx asked, finally breaking the silence. “It was easy to guess with the way you two look at each other every other second.”

-Two Hours Later-

Solar had had fun, but Fluttershy insisted that he needed his sleep. So after a final goodbye to his friends for the night, he made his way up to Fluttershy’s guest bedroom, being careful to keep off his injured leg. As soon as he got up to his room, he took off his bags that he had brought upstairs, which held his few belongings, placed them on the bedside table, and collapsed onto the bed, drifting off to sleep almost instantly. That night he had pleasant dreams for the first time in months.
