A young filly ran as fast as her hooves would allow her to, a paper bag clenched between her teeth. No matter how fast she went, the sound of chasing hooves was growing louder behind her.

Her only hope was the vast alleyways of Cloudsdale. “HERE!” the little filly thought as she ran down one of the many alleys. She quickly lost herself in this maze, finally hopping behind a trash can and listened for the shop owner whom she stole the bag of muffins from.
A minute passed, nothing but the sound of rain.
And....was that crying? She risked peeking out from behind the can, and saw another filly further down the alley. She quickly looked back towards the other end of the alley. Nothing. The shop owner must have given up and gone back to his store.

Deciding it was safe, the young mare walked down the alley towards the crying filly, who she now noticed was grey with a yellow mane. The thief put down the stolen bag on the floor, “Hey kid, what's the matter?”
The crying filly spun around and the thief raised a eyebrow. One of the filly's eye's was staring off... somewhere . “Ma-mama l-left me,” as she promptly began to cry again.
At hearing those words, the thief felt a pain in her chest. She knew the pain this filly was going through all too well. The only difference was while they had been abandoned by their mothers as foals, this mare had spent years with her mother, just for it to be thrown away. The thief's mother had simply left her on the door step of a little orphanage, not caring enough to take her inside the damn place.

The thief sighed, “What's your name?”
The mare looked up at her “D-Derpy Hooves. What's yours?”
The thief sat up a little bit and tried to make herself a little more imposing. After all she had heard that impressions were everything, whatever that meant. “Name's Rainbow Dash. Here kid you look hungry. you can have ONE muffin. One. The rest of them belong to me.” Rainbow Dash reached into the bag and pulled out one of her prized muffins.
Derpy just stared at it. She'd never had a muffin before, though she had always wanted to try one . However her mother had never bought her one. Derpy took the muffin and bit into it. It was the greatest thing she had ever tasted, so much so that she unconsciously flapped her wings. She even lifted off from the cloud she was sitting on before she softly settled back down. Derpy looked back up at the mare who had given
her the muffin, which was quite possibly the tastiest thing she had ever eaten. She noticed something about her that she hadn't before, something that shocked Derpy to the point that she nearly dropped her beloved muffin, “R-Rainbow, you only have one wing!?”

Dash became very stiff, “ya, I only have one wing.”

Derpy started, "W-why do you only have one?"
"We are never talking about that... EVER!" Rainbow snapped back reflexively. Derpy flinched away. Rainbow sounded like her mother when she was angry. Derpy didn't like it when her mother was angry. Looking at the frightened mare, Rainbow tried her best to calm down. "Look, can we just not talk about my wing?"

Derpy nodded immediately. She didn't want her new, and only, friend mad at her. Besides when Rainbow yelled at her, there was a insane glint in her eyes. Derpy knew that something was not right with Rainbow, but Derpy didn't care. She had a friend, and she wasn't alone any more. "Hey, ya coming or what!"
Derpy looked up and, sure enough, Dash was walking down the alleyway. Derpy ran after her, "where are we going?!"
Not even looking at her, Dash replied, "it's getting late, there's an abandoned house a block down from here. We can stay there for the night."
Derpy decided to stay quiet and follow her new found friend. It was late by the time they reached the house and the sun had already set. "Come on, we need to go in through the back."

Derpy didn't quite understand. Why did they have to go in the back way? The front door was right there. "Dashie why can't we use the front door?"
At hearing the new nickname Derpy had given her, Rainbow paused for just a moment, but continued on without giving it a second thought.
"Because if some pony sees us, they WILL run us off. And I don't feel like getting chased again today." Of course, Rainbow was still holding the bag of stolen food in her mouth, so it came out muffled, but Derpy could understand.
As they entered through the back door, Derpy looked around the place. No furniture or decorations of any kind. It made the whole place feel sad ...sad and alone. Rainbow sat down in the middle of the empty living room and Derpy immediately sat next to her.

Rainbow, without even looking at Derpy, opened the paper bag and dumped its contents on the floor. Two apples and another muffin. Derpy reached for the muffin but Rainbow stopped her by taking the muffin first. "Oh no you don't. You already had a muffin. Here, have an apple, that way it's fair."
The two of them ate in silence, neither knowing what to talk about. Rainbow was tired and didn't want to talk anyway and Derpy didn't want to make Dash angry again. After eating Dash curled up in a corner and began to fall asleep. Derpy laid down next to her but, try as she might, she just could not god u to sleep as it was too cold.

Derpy shivered, and just as she was about to get up and try to find a way to keep warm, she felt Rainbow wrap her hoof around her waist and pull her next to herself. "Here, we can keep each other warm" as Derpy laid there, she no longer felt cold. Instead she felt... safe with Rainbow.

Thay had no idea that the coming decade would have the two of them bathed in blood.
