JUST READ IT

Scootaloo jumped up as she heard Rainbow Dash screaming her name, making it echo around outside the filly’s cloud door. She twitched her ears in annoyance. Just a few more minutes, the young blank-flank thought.

She puffed back down on her pillow, turning her back towards the hallway. Sunlight streamed in her bedroom, lighting it with a warm orange. Scootaloo knew today was her first flying lesson. But working in the morning, she definitely was not the filly for that. As much as she wanted to please Rainbow Dash, the morning schedules were too early.

“SCOOOOOTALOOO!” her sister called once again.

The orange Pegasus frowned, obviously way annoyed. But Scootaloo got up and flexed out her muscles, stretching every bone her body could pop. It feels good for her, and it usually made her ready for the day. The filly trotted out of her room, into the hallway, back into Rainbow Dash’s training room.

“Rainbow Dash!” she called. “I’m here!”

But her sister wasn’t anywhere in the room. Neither did she know that the cyan Pegasus wasn’t anywhere in the house. “Rainbow Dash?” Scootaloo called again, a little more quiet this time.

“I’m outside!” the young blank-flank heard her sister say.

Scootaloo walked out the front door of Rainbow Dash’s floating cloud home to see the rainbow-maned Pegasus flying outside with her saddle bag on. “Uh, Rainbow Dash, where are we going?” asked the orange pony.

For some reason she regretted saying that. “TO THE LIBRARY!” Rainbow called out.

“The library?” Scootaloo asked. “Don’t you hate books?”

Rainbow Dash looked at her in surprise. “No,” she slowly said.

With that she swooped Scootaloo up on to her back and swiftly swooped down towards Ponyville. The orange Pegasus saw that she was heading to Golden Oaks Library. Ok, it's not a joke, she thought. Her ride flew with amazing wind-breaking speed, her mane flying past her head. Most of the village was still asleep, except for the early work ponies. All of it was silent. So silent you could hear the wind blowing and all off the ponies softly sleeping in their beds.

Rainbow Dash ‘parked’ outside of the library slowly walking in. Scootaloo followed her in. She was still so amazed on how many books were in here and how Twilight would finish all of these books. Never would little Scootaloo though. The filly never wanted to read a book in her life. . Unless it was important. But otherwise, no.

A purple unicorn was in front of her, stacking books in a glowing pink aura. Her horn was lit up in the magenta glow as well. Near her was a small neatly organized table with a few different books in various colors. Next to that sat a paper and a golden quill. Scootaloo had seen those golden quills at the Quills and Sofas. Twilight appeared to be stacking all of the books on the table to go into the shelves, and putting everything else on the table away into drawers, cabinets, and closets.

“Hey Twilight!” called Rainbow Dash. “What’s up?”

The unicorn turned around in surprise, dropping all of the books down. Then she smiled. “Hi Rainbow Dash, what’s up?” Twilight asked.

“Oh, I was just wondering if I could borrow the Daring Do books again for my little sis,” the cyan colored pony said politely.

Scootaloo looked at her sister in astonishment. “Books? I can’t read books!” the little filly said furiously. “It’s uncool!”

Rainbow Dash grinned and chuckled. “Ok, ok. But give it a try?”

The orange Pegasus filly frowned and looked straight in those pink colored eyes of Rainbow’s. Seeing this, Dash frowned and looked straight back at those purple eye’s of Scootaloo’s. “Ok, tell you what,” she said. “I’ll read the first book to you, but then you have to do the rest.”

Scootaloo sat down and crossed her hooves. Now she really wanted to please Rainbow. “Um,” she said quietly.

Now it looked like Scootaloo just unlocked Dash’s rage. “JUST READ IT!” she said.

The little orange filly backed up a ways and said “Fine.”

Rainbow Dash started zooming around the library. Twilight looked at her furiously. Books were falling all over the place! “Dash, stop! I’m trying to organize! It’s now just a bigger mess!” with that she started to pick up all of the books that fell.

“Oh, sorry Twi. Gotta go! Come on Scoots!” Rainbow said.

“WAIT! The books?” Twilight yelled at Dash.

“Oh yeah, sorry.”

Scootaloo felt like they had been getting books the whole morning into the afternoon. But when they got out, it was still morning. They flew up to the cyan pony’s house and trotted into the training room. “Okay, let’s learn how to fly,” her sister said.

*************************************

About 2 hours later Scootaloo had fallen and Rainbow Dash got more mad. Or at least that happened during the two hours. It was time for school, and the little filly had everything she needed. Turns out Dash got all her stuff good and ready before Scoots woke up.

She didn’t try to fly to school, for she just would fall by the wind just blowing at her. All day at school she thought about those books. How could she ever like such a dumb thing to do? I guess we’ll see.

“Scootaloo! Why are you spaced out in thoughts again!”

Scootaloo jumped up in surprise. Her other classmates snickered and giggled at the sight. She lowered under her desk in embarrassment. “Oh, I guess I was, umm…” the filly smacked her head into the text book that the class was together reading.

“You’re going to get a big scar on you face if you keep doing that!” said a filly with a white-striped purple mane.

Scootaloo flattened her ears and looked at her teacher, Cheerlie. “I won’t do it again,” she said depressingly.

“I should think not! Or you can stay after school reading the text book only with me if that is what you would prefere,” said Cheerlie.

But she spaced out again. And there she was after school. But the blank-flank just couldn’t stop thinking about those books and that flying lesson. She just wouldn’t stop.

She just would not stop.

It changed too quickly

Scootaloo flapped her wings as hard as she could, hoping to get at least a foot off the ground. Sweat beaded her forehead, and she could almost not breath. Rainbow Dash was looking at her with forceful eyes yet she was trying to smile. Scootaloo tried and tried, but the ground didn’t get farther away, it just got closer, then right on her face.

Her sister was still trying to smile, with sweat now coming on her forehead. “Good job! Now for the,” she gulped then said “levitation?”

Scootaloo put her head down with a sad, longing look on her face. “It’s ok, Dash. You don’t have to pretend, I already know.”

She sighed, then trotted back to her room away from the training room. Scootaloo wanted to fly so bad. What’s wrong with her wings? They won’t fly, they won’t flap properly, and yet she was a Pegasus. Learning is a disaster. Flying is a disaster. EVERYTHING is a—

“Scootaloo?” Rainbow Dash called. “Please come out.”

Scootaloo got out of her room and went to where she heard Dash’s voice project from. She trotted out of the hallway, and saw Rainbow Dash sitting on the cloud couch, holding a green novel in her hoof. Scootaloo sighed and joined her sister by sitting on the soft couch.

“Time for some reading,” said Rainbow. “Daring Do and the Sapphire Stone, by who knows what let’s get to reading,”

Scootaloo had to giggle at her sister’s humor. Got to enjoy some jokes for a while.

Rainbow opened the book and a smell of sweet sap filled the air. The pages looked cold, dusty, and torn. “Ok. You ready?” Dash said.

Scootaloo nodded reluctantly.

“Good,” she said. And Rainbow Dash started to read.

*************************************************************

Rainbow Dash kicked off the end just as there was an almost as amazing as Rainbow Dash start.

Scootaloo had everything imagined from the story into her head. The king, the stone, the traps- Everything!

She almost pretended to be Daring Do in her room for a while after Rainbow read the book to Scootaloo, until she spotted her. But Scootaloo knew she HAD to show this to her friends! This book wasn’t NEAR as good as those books they read when they were trying to get cutie marks as librarians. Maybe, cutie mark book readers! Wait, didn’t they try that already?

But maybe it had something to do with Daring Do! Wait, CUTIE MARK ADVENTURERS! But maybe it was too early to try that… Or it’s NEVER too early!

Being like Daring Do would be SO AWESOME! Winning EVERY adventure with no cuts or bruises or even a minor injury! It was amazing! Scootaloo wanted to try to be Daring Do, it would be awesome!

Scootaloo sat in her bedroom for a while, thinking about the awesome book. Why did she regret it? Because reading was still kinda uncool. But some books were so lucky that EVERYPONY liked them!

Everything changed SO fast! Like, REALLY fast!

Then she heard Rainbow Dash calling her again. “Scoots, it’s time for you to ride your scooter to do um, something.”

But she knew what to do. “Hey, sis, um, can I borrow that book?”

Rainbow Dash responded by saying, “Eh, sure.”

Scootaloo ran into the living room, grabbed the book off the table, then ran outside to get her scooter. Only to be blocked by a large fall from the sky. “Darn,” she whispered.

After a long, long, LONG, long, long, long time, Scootaloo got to the ground and rode her way down her friends' houses. telling them to meet her at the Everfree Forest with supplies.

After THAT Scootaloo rode down to the dark forest and waited. And waited. And waited. ‘Till her friends got there.

“What’s this all about Scootaloo? You’re not gonna break your wing again, are you?” Sweetie Belle asked, worried.

“Yeah, what IS this about anyways?” Apple Bloom asked worried as well.

Scootaloo rolled her eyes. “Guys, don’t worry. I’m gonna see if I can do these things that this character in a book Dash read to me,” she said, pulling out the novel and showing it to her friends.

Sweetie looked the book over quickly and smiled. “I love books! I mean, I love THIS book! But the stunts she does are dangerous Scootaloo. Are you sure you want to do this?” she said.

Scootaloo snorted then said, “These stunts are nothing! I want to try them on my own though! Now, where’s my hat?”

Apple Bloom pulled out one of the boards and Sweetie Belle scratched her hoof on the ground nervously.

Scootaloo looked at them, then back at the forest. “Umm, did you bring Opal?” she asked.

Sweetie looked at her with sorrow. “Well, umm, let’s set this up,”

*********************************************************

Rainbow Dash sat on the couch looking at some of the Daring Do books. She thought of how silly she was to think of these books as bad. Why she turned them down? Dash didn’t know. But it was just how it happened to Scootaloo of what happened to her. Well, except for the cop chase.

Then there was a knock at the door. “Come in!” said Rainbow.

Scootaloo walked in. “Hey Scoots, how was crusading?” Dash asked.

“Good!” replied Scootaloo.

Rainbow looked back at Scootaloo to find that she was scratched and cut all over the place.

“Scoots, what did you crusade for?” but she was already in her room.

Rainbow shrugged and picked up one of the books to begin reading. Maybe it was her imagination, or Scoots needs to be more careful crusading. If it wasn’t, then that’s weird. But whatever she did, Rainbow kinda hoped that she was safe doing it.

Like, REALLY safe.

CUTIE MARK WING-BREAKERS

Scootaloo lifted up the next book to the Daring Do series. It was blue, undusted, and definitely ready for Scoots to read. She opened up the blue book, and was almost immediately greeted by a sweet smell of sap with a hint of old book smell. Scootaloo smiled, flipping through the pages until she reached the beginning. Whispering the words to herself, she thought of herself going through that forest and pulling off all those stunts.

Flipping page after page, and reading word after word, Scootaloo reached the end of the book where Daring Do got the artifact and escaped the forest.

Amazing, Scootaloo thought. What would it be like to be Daring Do? EXACTLY like the mare? No cuts, no bruises- just a hat to clean out. She really wanted to be like her, and to end each adventure awesomely. '

“Scoots! It’s time for you to crusade!” Rainbow Dash called.

Scootaloo ran out of her room and asked Rainbow to take her to the ground. Rainbow Dash rolled her eyes and said, “Sure.”

After Scootaloo rode on Dash down to the ground, she dropped her off in front of Sweet Apple Acres. “Thanks, sis!” she called.

“Have fun,” Rainbow Dash responded.

Scootaloo watched Dash fly away then went to get Apple Bloom, telling her to get more supplies and to once again meet at the Everfree Forest. Same with Sweetie Belle, who said she would not forget Opal this time. After that the little orange filly went to the zoo to pick up her order for big cats. The non-tamed ones, to be exact.

After HOURS of paperwork Scootaloo got the workers to set the animals each in a certain spot in the Everfree Forest. She smiled at her work, and was even more excited when her friends came with the supplies.

“Ok,” she said. “Let’s build this.”

***************************************************

Scootaloo looked at the beautiful structures in front of her. She was very satisfied with her work and her friends’ work too.

Sweetie Belle looked at her with worried eyes. “Are you sure you want to do this, Scootaloo? This is one of her most dangerous adventures, you know.”

Apple Bloom looked towards the forest and gulped. “Ah bet ah could never go through a forest like that,” she said, pointing to the forest with concerned eyes on Scootaloo.

The orange filly Pegasus rolled her eyes, a clear sign she thought she could do this. “Come on guys, oh, and set the stop watch when I go in, ok?” Scootaloo said.

Sweetie Belle shrugged at Apple Bloom then looked at Scootaloo. “Well, okay,” she said and with that Sweetie got the stop watch ready.

At this cue Scoots readied herself at the entrance to the adventure.

“One,”

“Two,”

“THREE!”

The orange Pegasus plunged into the dark forest and began her adventure. Dodging as many arrows as she could, Scootaloo went into the next part: the traps.

Nets and sticks cracked under her hooves, with axes swinging down on her from above. An arrow scratched her side, leaving some blood coming out of the wound. Scootaloo could hear some timber wolves from the distance, along with the cries of her friends still wishing her good luck.

But Scoots was still in the trap zone. She tripped on one of the trip wires on to a sharp rock, leaving a giant scratch on her arm. Luckily, Scootaloo got up and ran away before the trap door fell from under her.

Finally, the filly left the trap part and into the animal part. Snakes slithered from the trees and eagles swooped down to catch her. She screamed, and then the non-tamed big cats got in her way and threw her to the side. Scootaloo fell on a rock on one of her wings, and she heard the wing break with a little, crack.

Scootaloo felt lots of pain in her left wing form, making her eyes tear up a little. Squeezing her mouth shut, Scoots tried to get up and run away from the beasts that did this, but the pain in her wing was too much. The big cat stood over the cowering filly, looking satisfied with his dinner.

“HELP!” Scootaloo called. “ANYPONY! PLEASE!”

Tears flowed down her cheeks when all of a sudden, a rainbow wisp streaked across the sky then down on the big cat’s head. It ran away, and the rainbow wisp picked her up to bring her to Scoot’s cloud home.

Scootaloo was set down on the ground endless tears going down her cheeks and her wing in horrible pain. She looked up to see Rainbow Dash looking at her with a concerned yet angry look. “I know you were trying to act like Daring Do! But do you know how dangerous that is?” Dash shouted to her.

“I- I was dumb, I’m sorry Rainbow Dash,” Scootaloo said, more tears running down her cheeks.

Rainbow Dash looked at the crying fillies’ wing, then towards Ponyville. “I think we need to get you to the hospital,” she said.

Scootaloo looked at her sister, smiled, then said, “You think?”

They both laughed at the joke, not really concerned about anything. “Ok, now let’s go,”

AND THEN Scootaloo made it to the hospital. But on the way there, a thought occurred to her that Dash had saved her. Twice.

She looked up to her sister and had said, “Thank you” right where Dash could see it.

And both of them smiled until they got to the hospital.

BUT at the hospital, the doctor saw Rainbow come in and said, “Another broken wing? You got to be more careful Rainbow Dash,” he said.

Rainbow looked at the doctor and responded by saying, “I’m actually here for my sister.”

The doctor rolled his eyes as if thinking, Great, just another relative to always get broken wings, but he said nothing, and pointed to one of the rooms.

The sisters walked into the room, and waited there. And waited. And waited. And waaaaiiiiiited. Then the doctor came in to take X-Rays of Scoot’s wing. Only one feather was broken, so they bandaged the feather and got out of that hospital in no time.

Scootaloo learned a very important lesson that day.

Dear Princess Celestia,
Today I learned that just because it sounds cool, doesn't mean its safe. And no, Rainbow Dash is not forcing me to do this.

Signed, Scootaloo

Three weeks later…

Apple Bloom looked as Applejack kicked off the Daring Do book just as it had an amazing start! She raced to her room with all of the other books in her hooves, then pulled out the next book and read it.

IT WAS AMAZING! Daring Do was so brave! Then a thought suddenly occurred to her. What if she was Daring Do?
