My first fanfic ever! This story chronicles Celestia and Luna's troubles with Discord and Luna's love for the King of the Crystal Empire.

I realize that the first couple of chapters may be boring due to them not having much action. They're also kind of not romance-y...

Chapter 1
“Dearest Sister, the sun will be setting soon. Shall we find a place to settle down for the night?” The blue coated filly ran to catch up with her older sister.

The white coated sister stopped and turned her head to face her sister. “This is true, Luna. I think I can see a cave not far away.”

The sisters had been orphans from a young age. Their Parents were killed while trying to protect them by the current ruler of Equestria, Discord. Discord was a draconoquus and the spirit of all that was disharmonious. He had murdered the previous rulers of Equestria: Princess Puddinghead – the head of the Earth Pony Tribe, Princess Platinum – the head of the Unicorn Tribe and Princess Hurricane – head of the Pegasus Tribe. He had usurped their throne and taken Equestria for his own.
The sisters were very different from the other ponies. They had both a horn and wings. For this reason, Discord wanted them dead. They fled their home town of Manehattan and had been surviving off the land ever since.

That was 5 years ago. The beautiful country that they once knew had been transformed into a dark and deranged landscape. Animals have abnormal proportions, the sun and moon set and rise at random times, clouds move by themselves and buildings would float in the air.

As mentioned before, the sisters were very special, the only two ponies in the world to have both a horn and wings. Celestia was definitely the older of the two, she looked to be about 18 years of age. She had a white coat and a long pink mane. An eight armed sun adorned her flank.

Luna appeared to be around the age of 13. She had a dark blue coat and a beautiful baby blue mane. A crescent moon adorned each of her flanks.

The two ponies walked to the cave and each rolled out a small, thin mattress onto the damp ground. The cave was dark and cold. What appeared to be puddles of chocolate milk littered the floor of the cave.

“I shall gather the firewood for tonight. Just rest thyself, Celestia.” The youngest sister left the cave in search of twigs and branches.

Luna entered the nearby forest, the night air chilled her to the bone, the howls of timber wolves would make her jump every now and then. Luna’s horn began to be wrapped in a blue aura, signalling that she was using her magic. All of the dead twigs and branches nearby began to levitate off of the ground and float towards the young pony. Happy that she did a sufficient job, Luna began to slowly trot back to the cave.

Half way back to the cave she heard an ear-piercing scream, the scream of her sister, Celestia.

“C-Celestia? Dearest sister? What is wrong?” The blue coated pony went from a trot into a gallop, dropping all of the gathered wood. “Celestia?!”

Chapter 2
Luna ran back to where she entered the forest and found it set ablaze. A large roar directed her gaze to the large dragon flying through the air. The younger sister flew through the fire, singeing some of her feathers, and landed in front of her sister and formed a shield around the two as the dragon let out an extremely hot breath of fire. The shield shattered and the two ponies flinched. As soon as their focus returned to the dragon, its large hand was swiping towards them. The sisters hugged.

“G-Good-bye, Celestia…”

“Good-bye, Luna. I love you…” The white pony replied, shedding a tear.

As the sisters said their goodbyes, a loud clang rang out. They brought their gaze to the armour-clad Earth pony that had blocked the dragons’ claw.

Their hero was wearing heavy, golden armour with intricate patterns and was holding large broad sword in his mouth. Three fiery feathers, presumably phoenix feathers, adorned his helmet.

“Quickly get out of here! We’ll handle this!” The armoured pony looked over to the two other ponies that were readying themselves for battle. Well there only appeared to be two. The sisters could have sworn there was another hiding in a bush behind them.

“Starswirl get it off guard!” A blue unicorn stepped out of the group and shot a few beams of violet coloured magic at the dragon. The dragon turned its attention to the unicorn, which was charging another, stronger beam of magical energy.

“Starswirl! Watch out!” A beautiful Pegasus dashed to the unicorns’ side and lifted him into the air just as the dragons’ claw hit the ground. The Pegasus dropped Starswirl to the ground and flew up to the dragons face.

The black coated Pegasus flew to the dragons head and stopped in front of its eyes. “Mmm. Hey, cutie.” The dragon blushed brightly and laughed.

“Now! Get him now!” The flying pony soared high into the night sky.

The dragon snapped out its confusion and just in time to see Starswirl shoot a wide beam of magical energy at him, the armoured pony slice at his belly and the Pegasus that he was infatuated with kick him in the snout.

A black shadow curled around its body and stopped at on top of its nose. A skeletal pony emerged from the shadows “Boo!” The bony pony jumped from the dragons’ nose and landed with the rest of his friends.

The dragon flinched backwards and stumbled over its own tail. It fell onto its back, defeated.

Luna and Celestia watched in awe as the four ponies brought down the massive dragon.
“H-How didst thou do that? Who art thou four?” The younger sister asked in amazement.

The blue unicorn trotted over to the two sisters. “I am Starswirl. I am- I WAS Princess Platinums’ advisor. My pupil, Her Majesty’s previous advisor, Clover the Clever had an unfortunate run in with a cockatrice a few months before Discords usurpation, which left me in that position.” Starswirl quietly sighed.

“You don’t seem very happy about getting that position” Celestia interjected.

“It interfered with his studies… He always was a book worm” The black coated Pegasus landed in front of the sisters. “I’m Chrysalis. I was a member of the Pegasus army. I disagreed with their methods and tried telling them the honest truth. They kicked me out and I had to live on my own, well until Fenix and the others came along.”

The golden armoured earth pony stepped away from the recently defeated dragon. “I’m Fenix…” A loud squawk came from the skies and a fiery bird flew down and landed on Fenixs’ back. “…And this is Philomena” The phoenix let out another squawk as if on cue.

A black shadow crept up behind the sisters. The skeletal pony from before silently appears behind the two girls and wraps his fore-hoofs around them “I’m surprise… SURPRISE!” The sisters scream and jump away from the shadowy pony while he falls to the ground laughing.

Fenix takes of his helmet, revealing an earth pony with a red coat and an orange main. He looks at Surprise with a stern expression and then turns his attention back to the sisters, his expression softening. “And who are you two? You look very uhh… Different… A horn AND wings!”

The pink maned sister steps up” I-I’m Celestia and this is my sister...” Celestia looks at her sister.

“Oh, a-and I’m Luna! We know we’re different… We’re the only two ponies to have both a horn and wings… We call ourselves Alicorns.”

“Alicorns? Hmm… I might have to study you two later…” Starswirl had said the last part under his breath.

“Well what are you two doing in this dragons’ cave?” Fenix begins to talk to the girls again. “Caves are very dangerous places, especially for two… Alicorns… Such as yourselves.”

Luna spoke up first this time. “W-We are orphans. Celestia and I were hoping to sleep in there for the night.”
“Would you like to travel with us?” The armoured pony spoke to the sisters with a very kind voice. “We could always use some new friends.”

The two Alicorns turn around and ponder the question. Within the same minute, they turn around and Celestia says “We would love to take you up on your generous offer. Thank you."

Chapter 3
The dragon that attacked Celestia and Luna had been felled and the two Alicorns now journeyed with their new friends. However, where they were going, the sisters did not know.

Celestia ran to the front of the herd to speak with Fenix. “Where exactly are we journeying to?”

Without looking at the white mare, Fenix replied “We were ordered by Discord to bring him the Elements of Harmony so he could destroy them. The Elements of Harmony are a set of necklaces that hold the power to destroy Discord.” Fenix opens the bag containing the elements and shows them to Celestia.

Celestia stopped; her eyes were filled with hatred and frustration. “H-How could you do something like that?! Why would you follow an order like that?”

“Don’t worry; we don’t plan on letting Discord destroy them. We plan to use the Elements to beat him. They were made in the Crystal Empire, the one place that has had enough positive energy to hold off Discords’ reign of terror.”

The white Alicorn began to walk again “And how do you do you expect to do that? There are six Elements and only four of you.”

Fenix stopped and looked at the mare “Well… There are six of us now.”

----------------------------------

“The elements are the only thing that can destroy Discord” The beautiful Pegasus looked at Luna.

“I think the reason Fenix offered to let you two come was because he saw potential in you two. You and your sister are very special.”

“And it’s always fun to have some new friends!” Surprise giggled as he walked behind the two flying ponies.

----------------------------------

“I see potential in you and your sister, Celestia. Would you help us free the world of Discords reigns?” Fenix looked at Celestia. “I’m sorry if I deceived you.”

Starswirl, hearing the conversation, ran up between the two ponies “I also see potential in you, Celestia… An untapped magical prowess. I would like it if you would become my apprentice, I would enjoy learning the extent of an “Alicorns’” magic.”

Celestia pondered the request for a second. He was the advisor to Princess Platinum… He must have great magical abilities…

“I’ll take you up on your offer, Starswirl.”

----------------------------------

Night approached quickly. The wind of the night chilled the ponies to their bones, well except for Surprise who was happily hopping along with the group. The six reached a forest and decided to make camp for the night.

“Celestia and I will practice casting a reversal spell. If we can pull it off, it will temporarily reverse Discords’ effects. I suggest getting the tents set up just in case.” Starswirl took Celestia to a small clearing in the forest and practiced the spell that he had been creating.

“First, clear your mind of everything that is unnecessary. Now, imagine that it is day time, the sun, the birds chirping, and the beautiful flowers. Put all that positive energy into your horn and let it out.” Starswirl paced around his student as he explained the process. “Give it a try, Celestia.”

Celestia closed her eyes and slowly exhaled. She cleared her mind of everything unnecessary and imagined the sun that she loved so much was shining brightly. A column of daylight encircled her and began to grow in diameter. A bird had entered her imagination now. However, it was not a normal bird. Its wings were tiny and it had ginormous legs, its wings were having a hard time keeping it in the air.

The column of light around the mare quickly dissipated when the bird had entered Celestias’ mind. She opened her eyes and sighed. “I-I’m sorry. I just…”

“No, don’t apologise. It’s what I expected. You’re showing great potential, you just need some help unlocking it. I still haven’t perfected the technique yet. You did very well for your first attempt.” Starswirl smiled. “How about we get some rest?”

The white Alicorn nodded “That’s an excellent idea”
