Chapter 5

Animal House

Twilight and Spike walked down the dirt road to Fluttershy's cottage. They wouldn't be visiting her, she was out of town giving a lecture about the importance of inter-species relations between higher and lower cognitively aware animals. So why were they going to her cottage? To watch her animals while she was away. Fluttershy tries to visit her drake and fillyfriend as much as she can, but even then, the numerous animals she looks after tend to keep her busy most days and she would more than often call on Spike to help her. This was Twilight's first time helping however, and although she read up on how to care for multiple animals the night before, she was still very nervous.

"Twi, you need to calm down," Spike said, noticing his fillyfriend's worried look. "I'll be doing most of the work, I just need you to keep the animals in order. Just think of them like the books in the library!" Spike tried to reason with the alicorn. However, books don't need food, baths, be cleaned up after, and make noise. All this was stuff Twilight couldn't handle. She was a mare of reason and logic, her greatest body part was her brain, not her muscles!

Soon they reached the cottage and Spike was greeted by various birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects swarming him. During his various visits, they began to see him as a "father" of sorts. Twilight looked on as he petted each one and felt a tinge of jealousy take over. She saw Angel hop up to her and she grinned lightly, kneeling down to pet his head and feel his soft coat.

"Alright everyone, me and Twilight are gonna take care of you while momma's gone, behave for auntie Twilight and things should be normal, alright?" Spike announced, auditing a nod from every animal until they all went their seperate ways. Twilight was impressed by Spike's ability to control them, maybe Fluttershy taught him a trick? No matter, she followed Spike into the hut and went over the day's plan with him. She felt a bit more calm now that she and Spike were in a more controlled area of Fluttershy's bedroom and she had a definite schedule to follow. She could totally do this for a week!

By the time night fell, Twilight flopped into the bed face first, completely exhausted from today's activities. She had to wrangle the badgers so they wouldn't escape too early from their recuperation period, keep the eagle from eating everything in the house, and actually wrestle the crocodile to stay in his own pond and not in the coy pond! Spike followed and sat beside her, rubbing her back gently.

"I'm sorry about today, Twilight, I would've helped you with the croc, but the bear and his back problems..." Spike tried to excuse.

"No, it's fine, I shouldn't have tried to offer to help..." Twilight replied tiredly, her face covered in the pillow that faintly smelled of Shy's floral shampoo.

"Well, if you want, you can go back, I'm sure Pinkie or AJ can lend a helping hoof." Spike replied.

"No, I wanna be with my #1 Drakefriend." she replied, grabbing his arm and nuzzling it. Spike laid down next to her and kissed her horn, making her giggle. Spike could only chuckle back as Twilight got under the covers and yawned. He joined her and spooned her body with his.

"Night, Spike."

"Night Twi."

Twilight needed to be carried in by Spike on her second day, she was completely knocked out at the intensive action she encountered today. The smallest event involved a lighter, Angel, and cupcake frosting. Spike sighed as he set her down and laid down next to her, worried about her well-being. He decided he needed to call over Applejack tomorrow and let Twilight rest up at the library. He turned off the lights and went to sleep with his lover.

Day three made Twilight want to cry. There was no way she would be able to explain to Fluttershy why the family of tortoises got scared so much they decided to take residence in a tree and refuse to go down. She felt completely dejected, even though both Spike and Applejack told her it wasn't her fault Angel found that kazoo that started this whole mess. Spike came into the room and hugged her, kissing her cheek.

"It's fine, really." Spike consoled.

"No it's not!" Twilight replied, tears spilling over as she hugged the dragon in front of her. "I can't do this! I'm a failure to both you and Fluttershy!" she shouted. Spike pulled away and gave Twi a stern look, eliciting the mare to look at him.

"You are not a failure." He said in an authoritarian voice. "There are some things none of us can't do, just like I can't use magic to your degree and Fluttershy can't organize like you, you can't do everything we can do!" Spike said, making Twilight look down and sniffed.

"I... I just want to be a good fillyfriend to her." Twilight replied. Spike nuzzled her.

"If you weren't, she would've broken up with you." he whispered in her ear. She broke away and laid down, sighing.

"Can I try one more time? Just to see if I can help both of you in some way?" she asked. Spike considered for awhile before giving a silent nod of approval as the mare smiled weakly. She took his hand and went outside again to fix the situation.

By the time Fluttershy returned, Twilight had gotten the hang of taking care of the animals, though she still faltered in certain areas. When the pegasus kissed them both and asked if they were okay, Twilight responded positively and a bit pridefully, learning something new and feeling accomplished as Spike looked at her with a proud look. The trio spent the day at the cottage, hanging out and recalling their exploits over the past few days and planned to create another one later that night.
