Chapter 13 Training Begins

As the sun appeared above the hills, the rays of light once again gently woke Gavin up. He fluttered his eyelids as his eyes adjusted to the light. He then yawned and stretched out his legs and his wings, knowing that he'd be using them.
"Christ, I hope this doesn't hurt too much." he grumbled to himself, stretching out his neck. He looked to his left and saw that Dan was still asleep so he needed to be quiet; He tip-hoofed over to door and pulled it open gently, just wide enough for him to squeeze through.
He looked around and blinked in the sudden light. It was a warm day and there were no clouds for miles. He breathed in the crisp, fresh air and trotted over to the nearest apple tree. He knew that he'd need some food for energy, but he didn't want to bother anypony. Therefore he decided that his best bet was to get a few apples and eat them until Rainbow Dash came for him.
He'd seen Big Mac bucking the trees when he walked home last night. He looked up at the tree and tapped it gently with his hoof. It wasn't too tall or thick but it did feel very hard and very solid. Gavin turned around, took a step away from the tree, and looked over his shoulder. He lined up his hooves with the centre of the tree to make sure that he hit the middle.
Once he was sure he'd be accurate, he lifted his hind hooves and held them there ready to kick. However he waited to long and lost his balance, falling onto the ground.
"Ow." He muttered as he pulled himself up from the floor. "I don't think you do it like that." he added with a chuckle. He then stood back up facing away from the tree and this time, in one swift buck, he kicked the tree. Six apples fell to the ground around Gavin and he smiled, proud that he'd bucked his first apples.
He trotted over to a sunny spot and sat down, leaning on a tree. He then got one of his apples and took a large bite out if it. It tasted much better than any other apple he's ever tasted before, so he continued to eat and relax in the warm sun.
Eventually Rainbow Dash arrived at the farm and saw Gavin under the tree; A perfect opportunity for a prank.
"This is gonna be so awesome!" she whispered to herself as she flew up into the sky. She darted across the sky, knowing which way to go to find clouds as she was a weather pony. She finally found a small thunder cloud and grabbed it with her hooves, and then she zoomed across the sky, this time back to sweet apple acres.
Gavin was still under the tree when Rainbow slowly and silently positioned the cloud above the tree. She waited until he was just about to take another bite, then she kicked the cloud as hard as she could, sending lighting down towards Gavin and the tree.
"FUCK A DUCK!" he shouted as he saw a bright flash and felt electricity surge through his body.
He heard Rainbow Dash's outrageous laughter and turned up to look at her.
"Your face was priceless!" she shouted in between laughs.
"Christ! You scared the crap out of me" he chuckled.
"Alright Gavy, come with me, we'll practice near my place!" she yelled before landing and galloping off towards her house. Gavin quickly galloped off after her and managed to catch up to her after a while.
When they arrived, he saw that she'd set up some clouds in the airspace around her house, like platforms that he could land on.
"Alright, you're my first ever flight student so, but I should be an awesome teacher." she said with a grin.
"Alright, so uh... How do you fly?" he asked, eager to get started.
She trotted back a bit and gestured for him to do the same, knowing that it was easier for beginners to get a run up.
"Right so, this is what you're gonna do. Run up. Jump when you reach this line. Open your wings and land on this cloud right here." she explained, doing each of the things as she said them.
"Top. Let’s give this a try." he said as he backed up another few steps. Rainbow Dash flew to a higher cloud and nodded for him to go.
He galloped forward as fast as he could, now able to use his four legs to his advantage. When he reached the line he jumped up and opened his wings. The wide surface area of his wings gave him just enough lift for him to glide onto the cloud. He stood on his hind legs and jumped, waving his fore legs in the air in celebration.
"Yay! I did it!" he cheered.
"You only glided, but yeah that's a great start," she explained "it shows that your wings are strong." she added with a smile.
She flew back down onto the cloud with Gavin.
"Now, you're going to try to fly a bit more." she said "Just jump off this cloud, open your wings and try to flap them a few times." she added before demonstrating.
"Ok. Here we go." yelled Gavin as he jumped of the cloud and flapped.
He managed to stay airborne for a few flaps before he floated down onto the ground. His flaps however, were uncoordinated and messy, sending a few fluffy feathers out.
"Well... That was... Good for your first try" she muttered sheepishly.
"I can't flap my wings properly." he mumbled whilst waving his wings around.
"You just need some more practice is all." she said, nudging him playfully. Lots and lots of practice she thought...
