More than my Assistant

It was a warm summer day in Ponyville and everyone was enjoying it their own way.

Applejack was fulfilling her duties at Sweet Apple Acres. Along with Big Mac they were collecting apples, bucking trees, the usual.

Applebloom and her pals Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo were trying to find different ways to get their cutie marks. I’m not going too much into details, but it involves paint and fireworks… yeah.

Rainbow Dash was relaxing in the clouds without a care in the world, enjoying the peaceful view of the blue sky and multitude of clouds passing through the sky. She quickly became bored with this and began to fly through the sky at the speed of a bolt.

Pinkie was playing with the cake twins while their parents were busy downstairs with something important. You’ll know what it is later.

Fluttershy was preparing to have picnic with Angel who was carrying the basket and was looking less than enthusiastic about it. Fluttershy placed a red and white checkered blanket on the ground while Angel placed the basket down and quickly dug into it and pulled out a carrot and smiled which made Fluttershy giggle.

And of course Rarity was coming up with new ideas and designs for her dresses.

Yep, today just seemed like one of best the ponies could hope for, well except for one pony that is. You should know who I’m talking about as we focus our view at the Ponyville Library.

“Spike!!!” Twilight screamed in a panicked tone.

Unlike Twilight, Spike was enjoying this day his own way by sleeping, until now.

“Oh geez, what is it this time Twilight?” Spike said waking up from his nap.

“This is bad! This is just bad!!!” Twilight said running in circles around the library.

“Of course it is.” Spike said in a sarcastic tone as he got out of his bed.

“Princess Celestia is coming to Ponyville for a visit! In just 3 days from now!” Twilight said still in a panicked state.

“And…?” Spike said with an annoyed look.

“And, the library is a complete mess from Pinkie’s party last night! We have to get this place cleaned up! IMMEDIATELY!!!” Twilight screamed.

“Twilight, calm down for second and listen to yourself; you’re panicking because the Princess is coming for a visit THREE DAYS from now, and we need to clean up the library now?” Spike asked with an annoyed look.

“Well, yes, I guess I over-reacted a little there.” Twilight said blushing.

“A little?” Spike said with a cocky smirk.

“Don’t make that kind of look. I’ll admit I went a little over the edge, but you should know by now that a visit from the Princess means everything to me. I just want it to be perfect Spike.” Twilight said.

Spike smiled understanding his friend’s frantic actions.

“Okay fine, I guess I’ll start downstairs in the kitchen. You got to admit though, Pinkie sure knows how to throw a party!” Spike said chuckling as he walked downstairs.

“She sure does.” Twilight said laughing at Spike’s comment.

Twilight began cleaning all around the bedroom. She used her magic to sweep up the trash all around the floor and put the books back in their proper places on the shelves.

“Ugh, why did Pinkie have to bring the party up here, there is just no understanding her.” Twilight said as she continued to tidy up.

Twilight went over to her and Spike’s beds and proceeded to clean all around them.

“Well while I’m up here I might as well make the beds too.” Twilight said as she made the sheets for her bed.

She then proceeded to make Spikes bed until she saw something sticking out underneath his pillow.

“What is that?” Twilight said with her curiosity at its peek.

Upon closer examination she discovered it was a book, but not just an ordinary book, this book had the words ‘Spike’s Journal’ written on the cover.

“Oh my goodness, this is Spike’s journal!” Twilight said backing away from her assistant’s bed.

Twilight decided to levitate the book away from her and placed it on her bed while she finished making Spike’s.

“Hmm, I didn’t even know Spike had such a thing. One can only wonder what thoughts run through the head of that little dragon of mine.” Twilight giggled, but the more she thought about Spike having a journal, the more she was curious about reading it and learning more about him.

Even though she knew it was wrong, she still couldn’t get the thought of reading a few pages out of her head.

“NO! Spike is one of my best friends I can’t betray his trust like that!” Twilight said to herself.

Twilight had just finished making Spike’s bed and she placed her assistant’s journal back under his pillow where it belonged. Twilight decided to head downstairs to check on Spike, but she couldn’t stop thinking about the journal. She took a quick peek downstairs and saw Spike sweeping up in the kitchen.

“Maybe just one page, I mean he doesn’t have to know. No way! What am I saying?! I can’t betray Spike’s trust! But I just can’t stop thinking about what he really thinks about me and the others.” Twilight said in her hectic battle with herself on whether or not to read the words enclosed in her dragon assistant’s journal.

“Hey Twilight, did you say something?” Spike said calling from the kitchen.

“Umm, no, no Spike, I’m just talking to myself about something unimportant! Nothing you should concern yourself with, nope!” Twilight said in a state of panic.

“Umm, okay. I’m gonna finish up in the kitchen, could you help me clean up the library’s entrance when I’m done in here?” Spike asked.

“Sure! I’ll be down in a few minutes!” Twilight shouted and ran back up the stairs.

“Thanks Twilight! Man what is up with her? She’s acting like Pinkie Pie on a sugar rush, and that is never a good combo.” Spike said to himself as he resumed sweeping up.

Meanwhile upstairs in the bedroom; Twilight wanted to read Spike’s journal, but at the same time she didn’t want to feel like a horrible friend by doing this.

“Okay here’s what I’ll do, I’m gonna read one page, and then I’m going to put the journal back behind the pillow!” Twilight said to herself.

Twilight once again walked to where her and Spike slept. Her horn glowed as she levitated the Journal to her eye level. She opened it and began to read the first page. There wasn’t anything that described her or her friends since it was just page one of the journal, but Twilight was fascinated about how broad Spike’s vocabulary was, and it was just the first page! In case you’re wondering, she didn’t stop at one page. Once she read the first page she became hooked on her dragon’s continuous journal entries. She read countless passages in the journal, filled with nothing but stuff about everything and everyone Spike has experienced and met throughout his time in Ponyville. Most of the entries were about Rarity of course, but the journal included stuff about all of the friends he and Twilight have made, the good times and even all of the bad ones he had gone through. However, even though it was one of the greatest things Twilight had ever read, there was only one thing about Spike’s journal that bothered Twilight.

“Why hasn’t he written anything about me?” Twilight said in a sad tone.

She thought that it must be a mistake of some kind. There’s no way he would forget to include his best friend, right?

“Maybe I’m mentioned somewhere else, yes that’s it, why wouldn’t Spike write about me?” Twilight said to herself as she continued to read the journal.

Twilight read every single page that had an entry. She read every paragraph, every sentence, every single word and not one single page of Spike’s journal mentioned her. Twilight was saddened by this and closed the journal.

“But, but why? How could he not write anything about me? I thought we were friends. Have I done something to make him mad at me?” Twilight said to herself as she began to cry.

Little did Twilight know she just did.

“TWILIGHT!!!” Spike shouted from downstairs.

“SPIKE?!” Twilight screamed as she levitated the journal and placed it back where she found it.

“Twilight, where are you?! You said you were gonna help me clean up down here an hour ago!” Spike shouted while coming up the stairs.

“Okay Spike I’m coming, I was just, wait, an hour?!” Twilight said shocked at how the time just flew by as she realized how long she had been reading her assistant’s journal.

“Yeah, an hour! What have you been doing up here for so long? Reading?” Spike asked walking into the bedroom.

“NO! I mean, no I was just about to finish cleaning up in here and then, umm, there was this really big stain and it took me forever to clean up!” Twilight said hoping Spike would believe her lie.

“Huh, that’s weird, I didn’t see any stain before I went downstairs.” Spike said rubbing his chin.

“Well, I did just wake you up remember? Maybe you weren’t awake enough to notice.” Twilight said getting really nervous.

“Oh yeah, I guess you’re right. I’m sorry Twilight I just thought you forgot to help me downstairs. Anyway, I placed the books back on the shelves downstairs, but I could really use some help with cleaning up the rest of the mess from the party.” Spike said.

Twilight felt guilty now, she remembered that she said she’d help Spike clean up downstairs, and so far he’s done most of the work while she was reading his personal journal.

“I’m so sorry Spike. Tell you what, why don’t you take a break for today and I can handle the rest of the mess downstairs.” Twilight said in a caring voice.

“Wow, really Twilight?” Spike said amazed at what Twilight said.

“Of course, you’re my friend and I think you’ve done enough for today. Do whatever you want Spike, you deserve it.” Twilight said.

“Thanks Twi, I guess I could go and see if Rarity needs a hand over at the boutique. See you later Twilight!” Spike said as he ran downstairs and out the door.

“See you later Spike.” Twilight said in a dejected tone.

Twilight proceeded down the stairs and began to clean up the entrance of the library. There was a lot of trash all around, but at least Spike put up all the books like he said. Twilight began to think why Spike didn’t write about her in his journal. She thought that maybe Spike thinks she’s boring, but she scratched out that possibility since she’s been through her fair share of amazing experiences with Spike by her side. She then thought that maybe Spike doesn’t think of her as a friend, she was about to throw that thought aside too until she realized that Spike was her assistant. Maybe he thinks that’s all he’ll ever be to Twilight, just a lowly servant who must do whatever she asks.

“Oh Spike no, you mean so much more to me than that!” Twilight said to herself on the verge of tears.

Twilight realized that maybe she should tell him that, but what good would that do? She wanted to prove to Spike that he was her best friend and she would never consider him as just her assistant.

“That’s it! I’m going to prove to Spike that he’s not only my number one assistant, but also my number one friend! From now on I’m going to be the best friend Spike has ever had!” Twilight said with confidence.
