Chapter 1: Twilight and Spike

Twilight Play’s the Nintendo 64

It was a perfect sunny day in Equestria. The sun was shining, the wind blowing at such a perfect pace that everypony’s mane flew behind them in a deep wavy manner in the beautiful rays of Celestia’s sun. Everypony’s favorite mare strolled through Ponyville. After making a quick stop at Sugarcube Corner to get some “special” things, she walked back to her yellow oak tree. As she walked up to her red wooden door, her magic aura engulfed the door and swung it open. She trotted into the main area of the library, searching for her favorite number one assistant Spike.

“Spike! Spike! Where are you?” she yelled.

“I’m coming, I’m coming, hold your horses,” grunted Spike back. “What is it Twilight?”

“Spike I need you to clean out the library from top to bottom,” said Twilight.

“Why?” asked Spike.

“I seem to have misplaced one of my most valuable books and I can’t seem to find it anywhere” stated Twilight.

“Alright, alright, I’m going” grunted Spike.

Twilight trotted up to her bed thinking about her books and left all her “special” things on a shelf next to the stairs. She went up to her room, thinking about her books, and decided to lay in bed until Spike came to get her. As she laid down in her bed, she wondered how long it would take Spike to find the book she needed, and if he would even find it at all.

She began to doze off, dreaming about the rest of her day and what she would be doing tomorrow. She didn't hear the big crash until Spike yelled out, “TWILIGHT COME QUICK!” Twilight leapt out of bed and galloped down towards a hidden and unexplored part of her home. She almost ran into Spike who was just standing there in great confusion.

“Spike what’s wrong?” asked Twilight.

“Look! What is this?” said Spike. As Twilight looked to the place where Spike was pointing, she saw a strange black box.

“Good question Spike. What is this?” asked Twilight.

As she approached the mysterious box she noticed it said “Nintendo 64”, and that it had a mysterious little green cube in the shape of an N on it. She also noticed several awkward looking boxes and several odd looking mechanisms with long wires extending from it and one differently shaped box inside of it that said “Super Smash Bros.”

“Where did you find this?” she asked Spike.

“IwascleaningaroundtheareayousaidtoneverlookthroughbecauseofthepossibilitiesofreleasingaspiderarmyandIwasdustingtheplaceupandlookingforyourbookwhenIbumpedmyheadonthecabinetanditfellonmyfoot.” said Spike in a single breath.

“Well this is why we listen to rules then, huh?” gloated Twilight, as she proceeded to prod the weird box with her hoof. She realized that it wasn’t dangerous at all and too smooth and flat to be a weapon. She used her magic to pick it up and found that it was able to be moved around and has a cord to the wall and other cords that connected to a T.V. She decided to try a trick she had read a few days before about making magical screens. She walked back to the main room of the library, box and Spike in pursuit. She placed the device on the floor and started looking for the book again.

“Spike, I need your help again.” said Twilight.

“Yes?” replied Spike

“Find me the book called ‘Experimental Magic for Bored Unicorns’ please.” requested Twilight.

When Spike ran off in search of the book, Twilight continued to examine the weird looking device and thought about what crazy things would happen the rest of the day, and what might be coming up the in the next few days. Not soon later, Spike came running back, book in hand, and a smile across his face.

“You found it!” cheered Twilight

“I'm pretty good at these things.” said Spike

Twilight took the book from his hands and flipped through it until she found the chapter “Electronics and Miscellaneous Materials” and looked through that chapter until she found the page “Magically Stabilized Screens (aka TV's).” She read it thoroughly before closing the book. She then got up and gave the book back to Spike before preparing her mind for one of the most arduous task she would undertake. She concentrated harder than ever before and slowly a big purple screen was grew before her eyes. As the screen was forming many wires extended from the bottom and sides and a big electrical box formed at the end of her tree. Twilight decided to not question how there was electricity in a tree because she had to keep concentrating. In a little while everything was set to go.

“Hmm, what do you think?” whispered Twilight as she wiped the sweat from her head.

“Looks good I guess.” said Spike.

After a while of staring at the magical purple screen she decided to begin connecting wires, she first connected the big black wire that was obviously a power cord with the hole that formed at the end of the tree. She then tried connecting the multi colored wires to the front of the screen, where they seemed to fit, but found it quite impossible until Spike grabbed the wires and connected them himself.

“It worked!” yelled Twilight.

“You're pretty smart Twilight,”said Spike sarcastically.

Twilight decided to switch the big on and off switch to on and almost screamed with surprise as the weird console turned on in a bright flash. A bunch of characters started bouncing around the screen. A few seconds later a box with words in it showed up on the screen showing: “Please reset and connect a controller.”

“What does that mean?” pondered Twilight.

“I don't know. You're the genius here, but I bet its one of those blocky things there with the long wires that look like they might connect to the ‘Nintendo 64’ in the front,” responded Spike.

Twilight picked up one of the wires with her magic and connected it into the first slot and turned the game off and on. “That’s amazing! It seems to have worked, because these I’ve never seen this type of diamond dog before.” Twilight said as she watched many strange diamond dogs jump back and forth from screen to screen while they attacked each other. After the scene was over, Twilight stared at the odd screen for almost 5 minutes before asking Spike what he thought was going on.

“Spike, what just happened?” questioned Twilight.
“I have no idea,” stated Spike.
“Well let’s try and see what we can do with this,” said Twilight.
She reached for the controller that was on the floor, but noticed it would be impossible for her to hold it with her hooves. She then asked Spike who had hands to try to grab it. Spike reached for the controller, not worried at all that he might get some sort of disease if he touched it, and picked it up with his shaky fingers. Spike held it the best way he could, one hand on the middle part, his finger on the wobbly thing, and the other hand on the right part where the letters A and B were printed on what looked to be blue and green buttons.
“OK. I think I got the hold right. Now it’s time to figure out how to use this thing.”

Spike proceeded to manipulate the wobbly thing and noticed that the bright cursor moved up and down the screen and pressed all the buttons until he landed in the option section.

“What do I do now?” asked Spike.
“Umm. Press on the ‘Tutorial’ file” answered Twilight. Spike, using his claw, pressed the A button and waited for the something to happen. They watched a whole video about how to control the characters and what the game was about.
“Well Twilight, whatcha think?” questioned Spike.
“I think this is going to cause a ton of trouble,” answered Twilight.

Twilight decided to connect a second controller into a slot and figure out to possibly hold the controller. Many attempts to hold it in her hooves later, she decided to just use her magic, and it worked pretty well. She then waited for Spike to start a game.

“OK. I’m ready now. Begin a game,” stated Twilight.

“Should I start ‘Training’ or ‘vs Mode’?” asked Spike.
“Try ‘Training Mode,’” said Twilight.

Spike highlighted ‘Single-Player Mode’ and pressed on it. He then highlighted ‘Training Mode’ and pressed it. The screen changed into a new one. It had a ton of boxes on it, mostly visible, but some of them were crossed out. Almost all of the boxes had the strange diamond dogs from the scene that showed when they first got it to work.

“Well Twilight this sure beats a boring day huh?” said Spike
“We’ll see if it does soon enough.” stated Twilight. They noticed that they controlled little hands and that they had to hover over the boxes in order for the picture to enlarge in the bigger boxes under it.
“OK, now what?” asked Twilight
“I don't know, try pressing the A button.” said Spike. Twilight pressed the A button over the picture of a diamond dog wearing a red hat and some cloth over its body.
“Well, it seems to have selected it because its been highlighted into the little box.” said Twilight
“Let me try choosing the green thing” stated Spike. Spike proceeded to highlight the green thing and it flashed to the bottom box.
“Its called Y-o-shi? Hmm what a weird name for this creature.” said Spike
“It doesn't matter now, right now let’s figure out what’s going on here” said Twilight. Spike started pressed the big red button because it was the only button he hasn't pressed yet and it brought them to another screen.
“Mario’s Palace? Yoshi Island? What is this?” asked Spike
“I have no idea, It does say stage selection so I think its where we're going to be.” answered Twilight
“Well, where should we go?” questioned Spike
“Just go to ‘Mario’s Palace’” returned Twilight. Spike highlighted “Mario’s Palace” and the whole game shifted to a countdown and there characters floated in on little pads.
“Uhh Twilight?” said Spike
“Yea?” asked Twilight
“What am I looking at?” asked Spike
“I have no idea.” answered Twilight. They kept staring in awe at the magical floating castle and there characters awkward appearances. Spike then noticed that there was a countdown clock at the top of the screen.
“Uhh Twilight?” said Spike
“Yes Spike?” grunted Twilight
“You see that clock?”
“Yes”
“What’s going to happen when it hits zero?”
“I don’t know Spike!” exasperated Twilight.
“Ok geez..” whispered Spike. They sat there for about 30 seconds before Spike decided to wiggle the control stick a little. He noticed when you move the control stick it moves the character.
“Hey, try moving your stick.” said Spike. Twilight moved the stick with her aura and noticed that if you point it up the character jumps. She moved it all 8 directions and noticed the character moves according to where you move the stick.
“It seems the character is controlled by the stick” stated Twilight
“I can see that..” scoffed Spike. She then decided to see what the buttons do and pressed B. She jumped a little when her character shot out a fireball and it burned Spike’s character.
“Woah Spike did you see that?” asked Twilight.
“Twilight, I’m sitting right here I never looked away..” chuckled Spike. Spike started testing out motions to, since he has an opposable thumb, he has more control. Spike figured out that by moving the stick while pressing a button it attacks harder than by just pressing it solo. He decided to go up to Twilight’s character and test it out.
“Spike, what are you doing?” asked Twilight
“Just trying something” answered Spike. Spike started attacking Twilight and ended up killer her.
“Spike, What did you do...” asked Twilight.

“I seem to have the hang of this now” said Spike with an evil grin spreading across his face.

“It seems we only have about 30 seconds left.” said Twilight
“Seems like it” said Spike. Spike began his onslaught of fury on Twilights character and eventually the time hit zero.
“Come on Spike thats not fair!” complained Twilight.
“Sorry Twilight, Here i’ll show you how to play now” said Spike. He began telling Twilight how to properly move around the stage and how to properly attack. He then started another 5 minute round.
“Ok, let’s see if I i got the hang of this.” said confidently Twilight
“We’ll see?” chuckled Spike. He let Twilight figure out the controls a little better and then he began attacking her.
“Wait Spike! Give me a chance!” complained Twilight.
“Ok ok..” exasperated Spike. He let Twilight attack him until what he suspected was his damage meter reach 50%.
“Twilight..you know how I think I killed you before.” asked Spike
“Yea.” replied Twilight.
“I forgot how to do it.” said Spike blushing
“Nice Spike what do we do now?” said Twilight.
“I have no idea let’s try falling off the floating structure” stated Spike. They both then went to an edge and jumped off, they heard a huge splash and a lot of light came out of where they fell.
“I think thats how we die” said Spike
“You think?” scoffed Twilight. They started fighting each other, slowly learning there character's movements and attack powers.
“It seems my character can make you into an egg” said Spike as he swallowed Twilight making her fall into the endless abyss.
“Oh really now? Well I can attack you with bits.” said Twilight as she attack Spike. They kept doing this for some time until the time hit 30 seconds again.
“We have only 30 seconds and i’ve killed you more times” scoffed Spike.
“Well I only need 2 more to catch up” said Twilight as she punched Spikes character off screen.
“Now only 1 more.” stated Twilight. Spike began twisting and turning his character all over the map, trying his hardest to avoid Twilight’s grasp. The clock then struck zero stating the end of the match.
“Come on Spike! What was that?” yelled Twilight
“It was me winning.” scoffed Spike. Twilight just rolled her eyes and began another round, but not before changing the time to 2 minutes.
“Let’s see who’s good now.” said Twilight. Spike gulped and grasped his controller.
“Ok fine.” answered Spike. They began their match at the floating castle and attacked each other head on, but Spike started running away after Twilight started beating him up again.
“Spike come back here!” yelled Twilight
“No, as long as my green character can run, I’m running!” yelled back Spike. They kept this up for about 2 minutes and the game ended.
“Spike..if you do this again you're not playing anymore.” said Twilight
“Ok Twilight I understand..Wait...Is this a new part?” asked Spike. They noticed the game started the match again but with something called sudden death mode and their damage was set to 300%
“What's going on?” asked Twilight
“If you have no idea, How am I supposed to know?” said Spike. They walked around until an explosion happened close to them.
“What was that!” yelled Twilight.
“Really?..I have no idea” said Spike. They walked a bit more until a barrage of bombs came down on them and they started freaking out.
“Come on green thing! Run faster!” yelled Spike
“Ha at least my character isn't that big!” scoffed Twilight standing at a certain spot where bombs don’t pop up.
“Twilight stop cheating!” complained Spike.
“Hay you cheated when I didn’t know how to play..” said Twilight. Spike ran up toward Twilight only to be grabbed and thrown across the map to then be hit by a bomb and sent flying off the map.
“Twilight, why would you do that?” asked Spike
“When gaming its everypony for themselves.” said Twilight. Spike just scowled and returned to the character screen. After awhile of losing and winning, screaming and shouting they finally got the hang of the game fully and decided to call it a night. Spike got up turned off the game and immediately fainted, falling on top of the console and Twilight just stood up and focused her magic on Spike and picked him up, dragging him all the way up to his bed and covered him in his sheets and left him to sleep. She stayed back a little to write a letter to Celestia which she didn’t finish because she fell asleep right on the paper and dreamt about how much trouble would this trouble console be. Right when she fell asleep a spark flickered from behind her and 2 more controllers appeared including another game, it said ‘Goldeneye 007’.
