War. War Never changes.
Before the megaspells hit, the Equestrian government began a project that they believed would help them win the war. Due to the fact that the men were dying out already, and that many were dying in the war, the population had to grow somehow. So they began cloning. Thousands of experiments succeeded before the end, and as such, many were released into the civilian population, living like normal ponies. However, for every one thy did, one hundred were corrupted. The magic used to clone them at their conception was unpredictable, and often killed the host mother. The abominations that survived birth, were killed. But nevertheless, they continued the operations. Once the balefire spread, the project was abandoned, for the most part. Many of the imperfected ponies were released into the wastelands, became little more than animals, and so forth. However, one final project was completed, possibly one of the last remnants of an age that was once, but can never be again.
