Chapter 16: Princess of the Night

My eyes flutter open to the familiar sounds of multiple ponies walking down the streets outside of the apartment I live in. It's the same thing every morning. Mares and Stallions walking their kids to school or going to work themselves. It's just bad luck that my Grandpa and I live in the busy part of Manehattan, or maybe it was just cheaper to live here than getting our own house...

I stretch out my arms while yawning, "Same old same old," I throw on my clothes in what feels like an instant. I begin to walk out of my room, but notice that something about the apartment is a little different than it should be. I can't pinpoint why I feel this way... something is just off...

"Grandpa, Are you home?" I call out while walking down the hallway. There's no response, so it's safe to assume he went out.

I walk into the bathroom to begin the usual morning routine. I open up the medicine cabinet to pull out the toothpaste and toothbrush. I lay a line of toothpaste across the bristles of the toothbrush and go to work. I try to clean as much as I can before the urge to spit takes over. I lean into the sink to empty my mouth. When I pull my head back up, a figure in the reflection catches my eye. This figure is so recognizable that I know who it is instantly. I quickly turn around to face her.

"Greetings, Travis Goldheart," Princess Luna says to me.

"Princess Luna!?" I yell in response, but because of the toothbrush in my mouth, it came out as a garbled mess. I quickly drop down to one knee to bow down to her. The Princess of the Night knows who I am? What in Equestria is she doing in my house?

"Travis Goldheart, no need to be so formal. Tis merely a dream," Princess Luna's soft voice echoes through the dreamscape. Her voice doesn't sound like the way it would in real life, almost like it's coming from every direction.

"I'm dreaming?" I question. I stand up from my kneeling position, only to be greeted by Princess Luna's face. She's around my hight while she's on all four hooves. I can only imagine how much taller she is when on her back hooves.

Suddenly, a wave of memories washes over me in a split second. I see Ponyville, the house I'm currently living in, the Changeling's, and the time I've spent with Twilight. I raise my hands in front of my face to examine them. The bandages that were on my arm aren't there.

"If I'm dreaming... How are you here right now?" I ask.

"As the princess of the night, we not only have the ability to raise and lower the moon, but we can also enter the dreams of all living being in Equestria," Luna responds.

"Why are you here? I mean, out of everypony in Equestria, why are you in my dream?" I notice that the room we're standing in has changed into something else during our conversation. Instead of the bathroom of my apartment, we're standing in the Changeling castle hallway.

"Because we know of you, Travis Goldheart..."

My eyes light up at her words, "W-What do you mean by that?" Is this my chance to finally get some answers?

"We know that a lot of our subjects don't like you," Princess Luna says bluntly.

"Oh..." I feel my excitement deflate like a balloon, "Tell me something I don't know then," I turn around and place my hand on the wall I'm now facing. I look down at the floor, deep in thought. The flooring of Twilight's library. I hear a chuckle from behind me.

"This is the Library that Twilight Sparkle is currently residing in. Are you acquainted with her?"

"Yeah... we met recently, when I moved into Ponyville," I respond, not looking up from the floor. The thought of asking Luna about the Nightmare Moon situation involving the Elements of Harmony crosses my mind. The last thing I want to do is piss off Princess Luna herself, so I'll just ignore it for now...

"You're currently residing in Ponyville?"

"Yeah," I turn to face Princess Luna, leaning against the wall behind me, "It's been a bit more complicated than I thought it would be. One minute I could be doing something trivial, then before I know it, I'm fighting for my life."

"So, it was you who called upon my moonlight?" Luna looks into my eyes.

"Yeah, I'm still surprised that worked," I scratch the back of my head awkwardly, "That's why you're here, right?"

"We heard about the event involving the Changelings yesterday, and how it had something to do with you," Luna takes a step closer to me, her tone staying in the same, "Travis Goldheart, you were helping the Elements of Harmony that night?"

"Yeah, I ended up having to fight Chrysalis in an attempt to distract her. That's why I ended up in the hospital," I try to take a step back, but end up being blocked by the wall behind me. I feel intimidated by Princess Luna getting closer to me, "Did I... Do something wrong?" My face feels hot.

"No," Princess Luna turns away from me, "From what we've heard, it doesn't seem like something you'd do," Princess Luna begins to walk away, "The end of the night is nigh. We shall speak to you again," Luna's voice booms.

"Wait! What's going on?" I yell out to Luna. Suddenly, a bright white light blinds me, followed by complete darkness.

When I come to, I see the hospital room that I'm staying in. I sit up in my bed and check my arms. The bandages are back on my arms, I don't think I'm dreaming anymore. I look at the digital clock next to me, it reads 9:30 am. The room is kind of dark because the blinds are covering the windows.

I lay back down in my bed and look up at the ceiling. What was that dream all about? Why did Princess Luna leave so suddenly? Something just doesn't add up... But if she's going to visit another one of my dreams, I guess I can ask her then...
