One fateful day, during a trip to Fillydelphia, Maud Pie almost died.

Y'know what? That was the perfect punchline - the sort I should have seen coming yet somehow didn't. Good curve on that one.

Omg I saw that video a long while ago and I knew immediately where it was going hahaha

I've heard the joke before, but forgot it by the time I read the story. Then the comments refreshed my memory. It made for a truly fascinating experience.

That said, you may have captured Mudbriar's interactions with Pinkie a little too well, though that's a matter of personal opinion.

Still, very nice ponification of the gag. Thank you for it and best of luck in the judging.

“By the way, this is a really good bat. Did he tell you where he got it?”

hahaha, perfect!

This story was inspired by this video and thus, the tumblr post that inspired said video:

ahaha, love this! i can see why you were inspired to write a fanfic based on this, and wow, what serendipity that in the canon Maud is dating a wood-obsessed character? it's almost as if this was meant to be adapted to MLP!

excellent work here, very fun!

He stared at it, basking in the magnificence of its branches.

that's so Mudbriar! he's just quirky like that

“—With Rarity!” Pinkie finished, then gasped so loud she might as well have received a loudness complaint for it.

aww, continuity! love it

“Technically,” Mudbriar said, “days themselves don’t make sound, so today doesn’t sound like anything.”

Pinkie grumbled and stood uncharacteristically still while frowning at Mudbriar.

same Pinkie, same

Thus, the only thing she could do was follow Mudbriar around while he stared intensely at tree branches, occasionally prancing in place when he found an interesting stick, which always made Maud smile, honestly.

honestly, i wish we could have seen this in canon because that would make Mudbriar a lot more likeable!

Mudbriar didn’t say anything, and while anypony else would have just reiterated or left, Maud knew her boyfriend was actually evaluating possible responses, as he often did. She liked that about him.

aww, they do seem to have that in common, so that would be a mutual understanding!

A big, robust stallion leaning next to the wall. He carried a saddlebag with lots of stuff, but what caught Maud’s attention was the obsidian knife he was fiddling with, almost as if it was meant to be seen.

that seems ominous! i mean, obsidian always knives kinda do

And then Sturdy Dust swung the wooden bat that was in his saddlebag, which Maud did not notice as she could only see rocks and minerals.

oh no, Maaaaaaud! :( :( :(

I don’t actually know a thing about obsidian. I just made a quick google search and wrote what I understood, so sorry if it’s not accurate.

as is tradition for writers when writing about Maud!
