Promise Me

When you love someone, you are willing to keep secrets for them. When you promise someone you love, you keep it.

Twilight returns to Ponyville, without the pony she sought to find, but instead returned home with a baby. An alicorn foal nonetheless. Questions are asked but Twilight doesn't clearly answer them.
She made a promise, and she intends on keeping that promise.

The Promise

“Promise me, Twilight.”

“I promise.”

“Promise me…”

“I promise.”

“Promise…”

“I promise, now sleep.”

Twilight stepped off the train and onto the platform of the train station in Ponyville. After being gone for many months it was no surprise to her that her friends were there to welcome her home. As her friends gathered around her, they realized that she was carrying a foal in her saddlebag. Her friends took a step back and stared at the precious sleeping foal. The Princess of friendship frowned as she tried to come up with a story for the foal, because she knew that the truth would break her promise.

“Twilight, darling you have a foal.” Rarity said.

“Yeah, so what’s with the kid?” Rainbow asked.

“What happened?” Starlight Glimmer asked.

All of the questions started flowing in about the baby. The questions started melting together and the world went dark. She heard the sounds of battle. The sound of the foal crying snapped her back to reality.

Instantly, she used her magic to hold the foal, comforting her. Twilight then placed her back into the makeshift carrier of her bag. She glanced around at her friends, who were still waiting for an answer to their questions.

“I’m very tired. I will answer your questions when I am rested,” Twilight declared.

Though a part of her felt horrible for blowing off her friend’s questions, she was really tired, and she wanted to get some rest. Many months of fighting in vain to hunt down the monster who took someone she loved left her drained. She wanted to forget that it ever happened, the foal was a constant reminder.

After thinking about it, she decided to tell them something to make her feel better.

“She’s mine, and we need rest,” Twilight said solemnly.

It’s better they don’t know specifics, Twilight thought to herself as she trotted away, leaving her friends baffled at the surprising revelation. In actuality, she didn’t lie about the foal. She was hers. She didn’t feel bad for claiming the foal. After all, now she has a fighting chance of life.

As she passed through town, she paid no attention to the ponies that gathered to welcome her home. Ponies called out her name, but she didn’t acknowledge them. Fillies and colts danced around her to get her attention, but still she moved onward, giving them no attention. She didn’t mean to ignore so many of those who loved her; it was just that her mind was elsewhere.

Everything was just as she left it. It was the same quiet town with the same ponies, living in the same houses and living their same mundane lives. Nothing in the town changed, except her. She had seen many things and had felt so many things. Deep down, she felt as though she couldn’t relate to anyone, even her own friends.

Finally, as she stepped back into her castle, she sighed as she removed her saddlebag. Before walking away, she made sure to grab the foal. She was then greeted with a big hug from her number one assistant, Spike.

The purple baby dragon hugged Twilight for what seemed like an eternity before Twilight returned it. It had been a long time since she had hugged anyone, and she was happy that it was Spike. When Spike noticed the foal, he took a step back and looked at Twilight in confusion.

“I’ll tell you everything as long as you keep it a secret,” Twilight said.

Spike simply nodded. Twilight knew that he really didn’t know how to react. After all, he was just a baby dragon. Together, they walked to Twilight’s room. Her room was neatly made, and it was maintained so well that it appeared that she wasn’t even gone that long, when in truth she was gone longer than had been expected.

“So…we’re gonna need a crib,” Spike said.

Twilight set the foal on her bed. Stepping outside, she closed the door and soundproofed the room. She turned her attention to Spike.

“Yes, we will need a crib, as well as many other baby products,” Twilight replied.

“Is she yours?” Spike asked.

“Relatively speaking, yes.”

“Do I have to ask about-”

“No. I failed, Spike. I failed her.”

“Oh.”

“I’m so glad to be home.”

Twilight hugged Spike tightly and started to cry. Spike simply embraced her and allowed her to let it out.

“There is so much that’s happened, and I guess if there’s anyone that I could talk to, it’s you.” Twilight said.

“What happened?” Spike asked.

“I chased him around the world to get her back…” Twilight said.

As the foal slept, Twilight told the story of what happened. It took a long time to fully explain. The only thing she left out was the promise she made.

After she told the story, she sent Spike away so she could get some rest and so he could gather the supplies she needed. Twilight lay her head down on the soft pillow and drifted off to sleep.

Twilight ran up the stairs as fast as she could. She was determined to finally rescue her friend. Earlier she sent her companions off to pursue the coward that had taken her.

As she got to the top of the tower, she could hear sobbing. Quickly she broke the door down and rushed in. It was a cell with poor accommodations that included a soil bucket, a small barred window, and a bed of straw. Twilight stared in horror as she found who she had been looking for.

On the bed of straw lay a disoriented Sunset Shimmer. Twilight approached Sunset, then stroked her mane. Sunset looked into Twilight’s eyes and managed to crack a slight smile. Tears still fell down Sunset’s cheeks.

“Twilight…” Sunset tiredly said.

“I’m here,” Twilight said.

“I knew you’d come.”

“I know.”

“Twilight, I’m not going to make it.”

“Sunset, don’t talk like that. We’ll get you some help.”

Twilight started to look around and call out for help.

“Twilight,” Sunset said.

“I’ll find someone.”

“Twilight.”

“I’m going to save you.”

“You already have.”

“I haven’t…Sunset, I haven’t yet.”

“You have saved me.”

As Twilight continued calling around for help, Sunset gathered her strength and used her magic to reveal a foal. The foal started crying and Twilight looked back at Sunset in surprise. Twilight sat down next to her friend and took the foal.

“Twilight, I have something to tell you.”

Twilight leaned closer to Sunset and she whispered something in her ear. When Sunset was done she lay her head down.

“Twilight, promise me.”

“Sunset, I-”

“Promise me, Twilight.”

“I promise.”

Promise me…”

“I promise.”

“Promise…”

“I promise, now sleep.”

Twilight kissed Sunset’s forehead and started crying as she watched the life leave her dear friend. She stood up then brought the foal closer to her. The foal looked at Twilight with the most innocent eyes that reflected Sunset’s eyes.

“I promise that I’ll keep you safe, and that I will love you as if you were my own,” Twilight said softly to the foal.

The words that Sunset had whispered to Twilight echoed in her head. They were words that Twilight would never repeat until the time is right.

Twilight woke up to a newly built crib with the sleeping foal in it. There was a note left on the side table. She picked it up and read it over.

Twilight,

We’re all so sorry about earlier. It was that the baby caught us off guard, and we wanted to congratulate you. You don’t have to tell us everything if you don’t want to. Just know that if you need someone to talk to, we’re all here for you. Once again, we are so sorry.

With much love,

All of your friends

Twilight smiled as she set the note down. She lay her head back down on the pillow and fell back to sleep.

Sunlight Through a Dirty Window

Over the next few days, Twilight sent out letters and filled out documents regarding her foal. She took excellent care of her new heir, with help from Spike. Every once in awhile, she would wake up screaming for Sunset, only to wake the baby. Sleep had become difficult to keep up with. It all seemed like a dark cloud started taking over her life as she continued on with the charade.

Her friends helped out the best they could. They ceased asking questions about the foal. It didn’t matter to them how the baby came to be; they were just happy it was Twilight’s. She was lucky that they loved her so much.

A week after returning home, she received a letter from Princess Celestia announcing that she would be arriving within the week to bestow her blessings on the newest princess. Twilight was elated by the news, but a part of her was worried that the whole thing would fall apart. She needed a second opinion, and she needed to come clean to someone.

Twilight knew exactly who to turn to. She quickly penned a letter to the ponies whom she trusted more than any other. As she sent it off, she hoped that it would reach them in time.

She sat in her library after putting the foal down for a nap. In front of her sat a large book opened to the first page. For several minutes she stared at the page, but instead of taking in the words, her mind began replaying memories. Tears started flowing down her cheeks.

Starlight Glimmer entered the library and found Twilight sobbing. Twilight didn’t notice her pupil enter the room.

“I promise…” Twilight sobbed.

“Twilight?” Starlight asked.

Twilight paid no mind to Starlight.

“Twilight.”

“I promise…don’t leave me.”

“Twilight!”

“Don’t leave me…”

Starlight then shook Twilight.

“Sunset…no…”

“TWILIGHT, SNAP OUT OF IT!”

Starlight then hit Twilight in the face. The dazed Princess of Friendship snapped back into reality. Twilight rubbed her cheek and looked at Starlight.

“Starlight?”

“Twilight.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“You need a break.”

“There is so much that needs to be done. I have to work on all of the things that have piled up in my absence.”

“You need to get your mind off of what you’ve encountered. It would be good for you.”

“But the baby.”

“Spike and I will watch after her.”

Twilight frowned as she thought about it. A break would be nice, and she needed to get things off of her mind. Maybe I should take a break, Twilight thought to herself. The more she thought about it, the more it seemed right.

“You’re right. I need a break.”

“Rarity and Fluttershy are waiting for you at the spa.”

Of course they are, Twilight thought to herself. She left the room and headed for the spa. Outside of the castle a floating ember danced in front of her before disappearing. There was no logical explanation for the ember, and this troubled Twilight. And yet, instead of feeling the same grief and sorrow that she’s felt ever since returning, she felt a calming peace come over her.

The sun shone overhead. The weather was a little on the warm side, but life in Ponyville continued on. Ponies lived their lives happily and carefree, unaware of the nightmarish things that could take them from the ones they loved at any moment. None of them knew what it was like to lose a loved one in a brutal way and not to receive any sort of justice for them. Twilight couldn’t get the saddening thoughts out of her head.

I need to relax… I need my friends, Twilight thought to herself. She started running to the spa. On her way there. she knocked someone over. but she payed no mind to them. She was solely focused on getting relief.

She burst through the doors of the spa and gave a shock to the patrons waiting their turn to enter. Just as Starlight had said, Rarity and Fluttershy were waiting for her.

“Twilight, darling, what is going on?” Rarity asked.

Twilight didn’t answer, blankly staring off into space.

“Oh my, is everything alright?” Fluttershy asked.

Twilight shook her head. That seemed to bring her back.

“What? Oh yeah. I’m okay,” Twilight answered.

“Are you sure? We can try again another day,” Rarity said.

“No, I’m fine. I need to get my mind off of things,” Twilight replied.

The truth was that she wasn’t fine. She longed to divulge everything, but she knew that she couldn’t. Twilight had never felt so alone.

“Well, if you’re sure, then we should head in.” Rarity said.

They entered the spa and started receiving well-deserved pampering. The atmosphere should have been relaxing, but Twilight couldn’t relax. No matter how much attention the spa ponies gave her, she couldn’t relax.

She left the spa and ran away. Her friends grew concerned so they did their best to keep up with her for a brief moment before she teleported away. Twilight wanted to be alone with her thoughts.

Trees towered over her as she made for a clearing. She knew where she was going. With each step she could feel the memories returning to her. A strong feeling came over her as she entered the clearing.

She sat at the edge as ghostly images of a happier time played before her..

“No one will find us here,” Twilight said, smiling.

“It’s like you planned this from the start,” Sunset said.

“Of course I did. I wanted to make everything perfect for you.”

Twilight blushed as Sunset brushed up against her. It had been a while since she confessed her feelings and discovered they were mutual. Together, the two of them felt they were destined for the blissfulness of true love.

“I’m so glad you came back,” Twilight said.

“Glad to be back,” Sunset returned.

They shared a kiss as they stepped into the middle of the clearing.

Twilight could hear someone behind her but she didn’t turn around. A familiar sweet scent filled the air, and she knew that Rainbow was near.

“Do you know what it’s like to lose someone you love?” Twilight asked.

“I know what it’s like to have an unrequited love,” Rainbow Dash answered.

“I’m okay, Dash. You can leave,” Twilight said.

“You’re not okay and I’m not leaving without you,” Rainbow Dash replied.

Rainbow Dash sat down beside her. Twilight paid no attention to Rainbow, so she simply watched the memory play out. She knew better than to fight with Dash.

“I watched as she died.”

Rainbow sat in silence.

“I traveled all that way to fall short and lose her.”

Twilight then looked at Rainbow Dash. The pegasus stared out at the clearing. She wondered if Rainbow could see her memory.

“No matter how hard I fought, no matter how fast I ran, no matter what I did, I was set to fail.”

“You didn’t fail.”

“Don’t give me that.”

“No, you didn’t fail. I know that you didn’t fail. I can see it.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well you brought the baby back.”

Rainbow winked at Twilight. Twilight was surprised that Dash knew anything about the situation without being told.

“How did you know?”

“When you love someone, you know. It’s this lovey dovey thing that’s hard to understand.”

“So... a lovey dovey thing?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“You sure?”

“Uh let’s talk about your feelings,”

“Do we have to talk?”

“I’m not leaving until you tell me.”

“First you tell me about the lovey dovey thing.”

“No. I came here to talk to you. Not for you to inter… uh... Not for you to question me like a criminal.”

“Rainbow.”

“Yes?”

“You’re a dork.”

“Shut up and get talking about what’s going on in that head of yours.”

“Well, recently I’ve been getting these weird feelings…”

Twilight explained to Rainbow what she had been feeling. She talked about the nightmares and flashbacks. Rainbow listened attentively.

“I know this is off topic, but I’ve been wondering. What is the baby’s name?”

“Sunlight.”

“So, a combination of her name and yours?”

“No, it has a deeper meaning... I’ll explain it some other time.”

Sunlight... like the light that chases the darkness away. She’s my light. Twilight then continued to tell Rainbow what was going on.

Love of a Mother

A few days later, Shining Armor and Princess Cadence arrived in Ponyville. Twilight met them at the train station. They hugged the young princess, and Twilight couldn’t help but feel better.

“We came as soon as we could,” Cadence said.

“I knew you would,” Twilight said.

“So, what’s this about a baby?” Shining Armor asked.

“It’s a long story, which is why I wanted to talk to you two,” Twilight answered.

“It’s too public here to discuss this. Let’s go to the castle.” Cadence said.

“Before we get into this, I just want to say how glad I am that you’re safe,” Shining Armor said.

Twilight led her brother and sister-in-law back to the castle. She was glad they were here, but part of her was a little nervous about telling them what was going on. Deep down, she didn’t want to worry them with her issues.

She led them to Sunlight’s room and let them hold her. Shining Armor was filled with pride, and Twilight could tell by the sparkle in his eye. Cadence smiled so lovingly at Sunlight, and whispered something to her. The room was filled with joy and peace.. Twilight smiled as she watched her family welcome and accept the infant.

“What did you want to tell us?” Cadence asked.

“I want to tell you everything in confidence,” Twilight said.

“Confidence?” Shining Armor asked.

“If the information were to spread about the truth, I fear that there would be terrible repercussions,” Twilight explained.

“I’m listening,” Cadence said.

“So am I,” Shining Armor said.

Twilight took a deep breath then cleared her throat.

“It all started when Sunset came back through the portal…” Twilight said.

She explained everything that had happened since Sunset Shimmer came back through the portal. Twilight even talked about the short-lived romance. Each word that came out of her mouth tasted of poison, and she wanted to stop talking, but she couldn’t stop. Not if she wanted release. When she got to the end, she had to stop and turn away.

“Twilight...” Cadence said.

Twilight glanced back and saw her sister-in-law standing beside her. Cadence hugged Twilight.

“It doesn’t matter if she doesn’t share the same blood as you. All that matters is that you love her as if she were yours.” Cadence whispered.

“She does kinda look like you. It’s believable.” Shining Armor said.

“Your secret is safe with us.” Cadence said.

“Why does it have to be a secret?” Shining Armor asked.

“If someone were to know the truth of her parentage, I fear she would die.” Twilight said. “My companions that continue to hunt the monster down hate him and all who are associated with him. If they find out he is her father, then she would die.”

“Who were your companions if you don’t mind me asking?” Cadence asked.

“Ponies who have been hurt the same way as I by this monster. They wouldn’t tell me their real names, only nicknames, Victarion, Raven Wings, and Justice.” Twilight said.

Cadence nodded to Shining Armor and he nodded back.

“I will make sure that no harm comes to my niece. I will find out who these ponies are.” Shining Armor said.

“Speaking of nieces, where’s Flurry Heart?” Twilight asked.

“She’s with mom and dad. They’ll be here when Princess Celestia blesses Sunlight.” Shining Armor said.

Cadence smiled then trotted back to Shining Armor.

“Cadence, I can’t stop thinking of her.” Twilight said.

“You loved her, I would go through the same thing if I lost your brother.” Cadence said. “The only thing that would comfort me in a time of darkness is my light, our daughter.”

“And I have a light.” Twilight said.

Twilight looked at Sunlight and smiled. She never would’ve thought that such a small thing could make the darkness go away.

“Yes you do.” Cadence replied.

“I can’t thank both of you enough.” Twilight said.

“We’re always going to be there for you.” Shining Armor said.

“Yes we will, and Congratulations. I know you will make a great mother.” Cadence said.

“Hey, Sunny is well-tempered. Maybe we could trade.” Shining Armor joked.

“No.” Both Twilight and Cadence said at the same time.

The three of them shared a laugh. For the first time in a long time Twilight started to feel better. She didn’t feel alone, and she felt as though she was ready for this challenge. Most importantly she felt as though she could keep her promise.

That night Twilight stood on the balcony gazing up at the stars. She was starting to feel that everything was going to be okay. The only thing that was still bugging her was her broken heart.

A gust of wind rushed through and blew her mane. Memories started to fill her mind as the starts started to shift into images of her lost love. As painful as they were, she managed to smile instead of cry.

Her ear twitched as she caught sound of someone behind her. She glanced back but there was no one to be seen.

“Come out, I know you’re here.” Twilight called out.

“But where’s the fun in hide-n’-go seek if you aren’t willing to search for me.” Discord chuckled.

The god of chaos transformed from a potted plant to his original form. He slithered towards her with a grin on his face. When he was close enough he poofed to the in front of Twilight.

“Or would you rather me take on a different form? Like this one.” Discord said.

With a snap of his claw he transformed into Sunset Shimmer. Twilight closed her eyes and looked away. She didn’t want to take any steps back.

“Stop it, Discord.” Twilight growled.

“Come on, Twilight. Open your eyes.” Discord said.

Discord tried to open Twilight’s eyes but she was able to make him stop. She sent out a shockwave that pushed the pestering draconequus back. Discord reverted to normal then hovered in front of Twilight.

“Do that again and I swear that I will turn you back into stone.” Twilight threatened.

“Temper. Temper. I was just showing you what you wanted.” Discord said.

“She’s gone so let her be.” Twilight said.

“You’ve kept some of her, and I’m not only talking about the memories you hold. Though I must say they are very juicy memories.” Discord said.

Discord materialized a magazine with an image of Twilight and Sunset on the cover. He flipped through the magazine and grinned.

“Discord!”

“What? Are your thoughts off-limits as well?”

“Yes.”

“Though there is one that I can’t see. You keep it locked off.”

“What’s it to you?”

“Oh I just want to know what secrets you have, after all friends share secrets with friends.”

“This is a secret that no one may know about. I didn’t even tell my brother or Cadence about it.”

“Tell me about it.”

“No.”

“Please?”

“No”

“Pretty please with sugar on top.”

“No. I have all night to say no to you.”

“Fine. Just let me see the little pipsqueak.”

“You can’t see her until the ceremony.”

“But you let Fluttershy see her.”

“That’s because she saw her at the train station, and plus she didn’t turn into my…you get the point.”

Discord looked at Twilight with a pouty face. He folded his arms and floated in front of Twilight.

“I’m sorry.”

Twilight glared at Discord. She did not like that he had tried to invoke the darkness inside of her by turning into Sunset, nor did she like the fact that he made fun of her inability to save her love. A part of her was sore about his actions but for the most part she wanted to forgive him like a true friend.

“Tomorrow. You can see her tomorrow if you bring Fluttershy with you.”

“Oh goody.”

“And Discord.”

“Yes, your highness.”

“Stay out of my thoughts.”

“If you say so.”

“I mean it.”

“Fair enough, without further ado I bid you adieu.”

Discord waved then snapped his claw he disappeared. Twilight sighed in relief after Discord had left. She then picked up where she left off. Her eyes focused on the stars and watched as the star ponies played in the darkness of the night sky.

Together the Twilight and the Sunset constellations then bowed to each other and between them a foal was created. Sunlight had the brightest star on the tip of her horn. From there stars gathered to make a heart around the family.

A mother’s love is not restricted by blood, it extends to those we take into our lives and it is up to us to show them the love that a mother has for her own. Sunlight is mine, and she always will be, Twilight continued to gaze at the stars with a smile on her face and a stream of tears flowing down her cheek. She knew that everything was going to be okay.

A Story Told

View Online

The day had come for the blessing of Sunlight. Ponies gathered outside of the castle to get a glimpse of the newest princess. Security was bumped up for the event and it seemed as though everything was accounted for. However, this did little to quell Twilight’s nerves.

Inside she did her best to stand still as Rarity added a few finishing touches to the ensemble created just for the occasion. Twilight twitched every now and then, only to be repositioned by the irritated Rarity.

“Twilight, darling, do try to stand still.”

“I’m sorry.”

After a few more minutes Rarity finished her work and took a step back to admire her work. Twilight saw herself in the mirror and she smiled at the beautiful work that Rarity had done. There was the clink of a lock. Twilight looked in the direction of the sound, and saw Rarity levitate a small pin of Sunset Shimmer’s cutie mark. The seamstress then pinned it on the collar of Twilight’s dress.

“I may have only known her for a little while, but I know how much she meant to you. So I made this for you.”

“Oh Rarity, this is beautiful.”

“Even though today is for your baby, it doesn’t hurt to make you beautiful.”

“Rarity, you’re the best.”

“Anything for a friend.”

They hugged then left to retrieve Sunlight. Entering the room she smiled as she saw Rainbow holding Sunlight. The cyan pegasus smiled at the baby. She was acting unlike herself.

“Rainbow?” Twilight asked.

The shocked Rainbow Dash quickly put Sunlight down and whistled. Twilight smiled and shook her head as she trot up to Sunlight. She picked up the baby and held her out to Rainbow.

“Hold her.” Twilight said.

“I did.” Rainbow said.

“You look cute holding her.” Twilight said.

“I do say, it’s quite a touching sight.” Rarity added.

Rainbow took hold of the baby and flew out of reach of anyone. She couldn’t help but smile at the baby. There was something about the little Sunlight.

“I’m not cute.” Rainbow declared.

“Flying out of reach doesn’t help your case.” Twilight said.

At that moment the others arrived and stared up at Rainbow Dash.

“Well I’ll be. Looky here at RD all gushy fer the young‘un.” Applejack said.

Rainbow flew higher to avoid the sneers of her friends.

“Rainbow you have to come down so we can get her ready for the ceremony.” Twilight called out.

“Fine.” Rainbow called back.

As she descended she couldn’t help but smile. Twilight took Sunlight from Rainbow.

“I promise that you can see hold her again later.” Twilight said.

“Real-er I mean that’s cool.” Rainbow said.

Twilight then gave her to the others to help prepare Sunlight for her big day. The others have held the baby at few times but none of them had such a reaction as Rainbow did. She couldn’t help but smile at the thought of Rainbow holding Sunlight.

When they were done the baby glowed like the sun. The colors of the gown she wore complemented her velvety golden coat, and the tiara they placed on her head brought out her burgundy, yellow, and purple mane. Twilight loved Sunlight as much as she loved Sunset. She loved that she saw a lot of Sunset in her.

Princess Celestia entered the room with Luna and Cadence in tow. The jubilant princess approached Twilight and Sunlight.

“So beautiful, much like her mother.” Princess Celestia said.

“Thank you.” Twilight said.

“Come now, we mustn’t keep the ponies waiting.” Princess Celestia said.

With a royal entourage they headed out to the balcony that overlooked an enormous crowd of ponies gathered to get a glimpse of Princess Sunlight. Ponies cheered as the princesses neared the edge of the balcony.

Twilight gazed out at the crowd and tried to keep calm. A feeling of anxiety started building up as the waves of ponies turned into an army of soldiers. She took a step back.

Not now, Twilight bit her lip and tried to find an escape route. She felt a hoof on her shoulder and she glanced up at her sister-in-law. The loving smile on her sister’s face calmed her down enough to bring her back to reality.

Princess Celestia gave a speech that Twilight couldn’t really pay attention to. Twilight was fading in and out of reality during the speech. However, it came time for her to say a few words. She gathered her courage and stepped forth.

“I’d like to thank all of you for coming out today. It’s great to be back home.” Twilight said. She took a deep breath before continuing. “They say that in times of combat and uncertainty, you find yourself. What they didn’t say was that you also find those you love and care for. However, that is not a place to cultivate such things. As I was off on this mission, I found someone I loved and then just like that, I lost them. It’s all a sad story, but in the midst of the sadness and chaos I found my light. My daughter is my light in the darkness. I may not have come back with the one I was searching for, but I did come back with my daughter, my light, and the newest princess. I now present all of you with my light, Princess Sunlight.”

They raised Sunlight up and the ponies below cheered. There was an ember that gently floated above the baby and it made the infant smile and giggle. Twilight smiled as she lowered her daughter. Now she was face to face with the flesh and blood of the one she loved so much that she traveled to ends of the earth to save her. Sunlight resembled her mother, she even had her smile, but Twilight knew that she had to let Sunset go if she wanted to be there for this beautiful foal.

Twilight gazed up at the sky and watched the ember fade away. She then held Sunlight close to her and nuzzled her.

“My baby, my light, I’ll always be here for you.” Twilight whispered to Sunlight.

The princesses smiled at the sight of mother and child having a moment together. Twilight ignored the others as she made her way back into her castle. As she walked along she didn’t feel the creeping darkness or the suffocating loneliness, instead she felt love. She noticed that Rainbow followed closely, behind her were her brother and sister, and behind them were the others.

She led them to Sunlight’s room and that’s when she laid the little princess to sleep. The entourage sang a sweet lullaby to the baby and they watched as she fell asleep. Twilight watched as Princess Celestia then cast a spell.

“To you I gift the sun, may its light guide you and keep you warm.” Princess Celestia said.

Princess Luna followed her sister and cast a spell on Sunlight.

“To you I gift the moon, may it provide light in the dark of night. I also gift the night sky, may the stars remember the fondest of memories and help you remember when you may have forgotten times of happiness.” Princess Luna said.

Princess Cadence cast her spell that turned into a heart.

“To you I give you love, not only of family, but of friends as well.” Princess Cadence said.

Twilight then placed her horn on Sunlight’s and cast a spell.

“To you my baby, I promise to love you unconditionally. I will protect you from all that may try to harm you. I will comfort you when you fail. I will be there for you. My little Sunlight, no matter how old you get you will always be my baby. I gave you the gift of life, and you gave me the gift of light, I can’t thank you enough for being there for me. Now I shall return the favor by being there for you.” Twilight said.

“To you my baby, I gave you life and a chance to live life.” Sunset Shimmer said.

Twilight looked up to see Sunset standing on the other side of the crib. Time stood still and the world seemed to disappear.

“No one can hear us or see us. To them you are standing there looking at Sunlight.”

“You...you’re here.”

“For the moment.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

“I couldn’t save you.”

“It’s okay. You saved her.”

“She looks like you.”

“I know.”

“I love you.”

“I know.”

“I promise that I’ll keep her safe, to love her, and to teach her all she needs to know.”

“Twilight.”

“Yes?”

“Promise me, Twilight.”

“I promise.”

“I have to go now.”

“I know.”

Sunset leaned over and kissed Sunlight then turned around then started to walk away. The room returned to normal and Twilight simply smiled.

“I have to let you go.” Twilight whispered. “So I can focus on our baby.”
