Beauty is only skindeep
The clock struck one and Rarity was still up prancing about figuring out what to wear for tomorrow. Usually she didn't take this long but tomorrow was the anniversary when Twilight had become a princess.
"Perhaps I could wear my yellow and pink dress, ugh no that's too bright what was I thinking?" She went through all off her dresses " No no, no I don't have a dress to wear this has to be the worse thing ever!"
She was unaware that she had woken up her little sister who was staying with her since their parents had gone away for the week.
"Rarity what are you doing?"
Rarity quickly turned around "Sweetie Belle what are you doing up at this hour? Little fillies should be in bed."
"I could ask you the same question."
Rarity looked at her dresses "I'm deciding on an outfit for tomorrow it can't be any old dress as tomorrow is important."
"Sis I'm sure your friends won't mind what you wear." The little unicorn yawned. "I'm going to bed and I suggest you do the same, you don't want to fall asleep on Twilights big day."
Rarity watched her little sister, how mature she was compared to the other cutie mark crusaders. She was right though if Rarity didn't get to sleep soon she would be too exhausted to do tomorrow. The unicorn went to her room and fell asleep.
The next morning Rarity rushed out of bed she had overslept she only had an hour before she had to be out. Sweetie Belle was already downstairs eating her breakfast cereal. She had got her sister breakfast out
"Thank you so much darling." As she rushed her food "Terrible sorry for rushing Sweetie but I'm already late”
Although an hour would seem plenty of time to get ready to some ponies to Rarity it only seemed like 10 minutes. The unicorn did her makeup and went to pick her outfit, which was no easy task. To save time she picked the first dress she came too it wasn't as fancy as her others but it would have to do.
She put on the blue silk dress she remembered this one her mom had given it to her as a present it was her dress originally when she first met her father. Rarity relished in the memories and put her fire ruby on. It went well with this dress she would have looked in the mirror but time was up as she went out.
Pinkie Pie was waiting for her. “Hey Rarity love the dress” she was smiling “Although I was expecting you too be more fancy but that’s ok though.”
“Do you think I look too plain darling?”
Pinkie shook her head “No you look cute in that dress.” She saw the carriage that was going to take them. She started singing “Carriage trip, Carriage trip we’re going on a carriage trip” as she got in followed by Rarity.
The unicorn looked out of the window she knew Pinkie meant well but next to Dash and Applejack she knew nothing about fashion. She saw the castle and wanted to hide.
But Pinkie dragged her out towards her friends it was obvious Pinkie didn’t care on how she looked but Twilight would.
Rarity pulled back “Pinkie slow down darling I need to check my make up”
“You look fine Rarity well…” she stumbled on her words.
“Well what?” Rarity worried.
“Well you haven’t put your fake eyelash’s on.” Pinkie knew she should have kept quite as Rarity ran too the carriage hoping her friend was wrong
But no Pinkie was right her eyelashes were missing one of her best features was missing she couldn’t go back to Pony vile till later. Pinkie Pie came over and put an arm over the sobbing Rarity.
“Awww don’t cry Rarity it doesn’t look too bad.”
“Yes it does darling I look hideous!” wailed Rarity. “I can’t be seen like this what if Photo Finnish or Hoity Toity see me they’ll take pictures and every pony will stare at me!”
Pinkie wished she had kept quite now beauty was a big thing for Rarity and she was dead embarrassed about her eyelashes. Pinkie thought hard she hated for her friend to be upset soon she had an idea.
“Maybe you could wear sunglass’s Rarity? That way no pony would see your eyes”
Rarity stopped crying and looked at Pinkie. “That’s perfect darling why didn’t I think of that. Do you have any sunglasses?”
The earth mare shook her head, but she noticed a gift shop nearby. Perhaps they sold sunglasses there?
Rarity bolted there leaving Pinkie pie shocked she had never seen her friend run so fast vanity was a big issue. She hopped there to see Rarity looking at the sunglasses after a while she picked a pair and went to pay for them.
She put them on straight away "Shall we go to now Twilight darling?" Pinkie nodded although she had no idea about fashion Rarity looked better without them.
Along the way they met Dash she had her sunglasses she was surprised Rarity had them too. "Hey you two made it at last huh?"
Pinkie jumped up and down."Yes indeedee."
"What took you so long and why are you wearing sunglasses Rarity?" Rainbow asked. Rarity felt like she could tell her she took them off for a brief moment.
Rainbow Dash was quite "All that just because you forgot your eyelashes? You look fine without them"
"Suppose some higher class were too see me they would stare as well as comment about me. My reputation would be ruined" Rarity went to the castle.
Dash looked at Pinkie who shrugged as they followed Rarity soon they saw Applejack.
"Howdy gals. Err Rarity why are ya wearing" Dash cut her off and whispered in her ear "It's vanity issues"
"Ah see Rarity yer aint being honest with yerself" Applejack called to the unicorn but she didn't hear her. Soon they met up with Twilight and Fluttershy .
They both looked at Rarity before they asked Dash cut them off she was sick off this.
"It's vanity Rarity forgot her fake eyelash's and now she believes her reputation will be ruined!"
"Not so loud Rainbow" Rarity tried to silence her friend but had little success.
"One flaw one bucking flaw and it's the end off the world for you Rarity!" she looked at Rarity who was quite and took away her sunglasses.
"Give them back " Rarity was getting cross.
"No Rarity you looked better without them. If beauty so important to you then go home it looks like you care more about how you look then your friends"
Rarity was quite tears were coming to her eyes Dash was right she did look self-centred in front of a princess. "I....m sorry I do care more about you than my looks but you don't believe me and I'm sure you don't want to be seen with a selfish mare" she ran off.
"Rarity wait come back!" Twilight called, but the unicorn didn't hear her. "Nice Dash really nice."
"But she would complain about how she looked all day" started Dash .
"Perhaps but you could have been nicer Rainbow Dash." Said Fluttershy "How would you like it if Soarin said you weren't good enough?"
"Pretty rotten." Said Dash hanging her head.
"That's how you made Rarity feel true she can be a bit self centred at times, but we all have flaws." Replied Fluttershy. "Now go and apologise to her."
"But"
"No buts Dash you upset a friend and now you must fix it." Said Twilight "I'm not having a day out without Rarity." Without a further comment Dash left to find the unicorn. Fluttershy was correct she could have been nicer but she still felt like she was right.
Eventually she found Rarity sitting on a bench she wasn't crying but she was still shaken up.
"Hey Rarity, listen I'm sorry I shouted at you but I didn't want to listen to you complain all day" Dash put her hoof on Rarity shoulder.
" I know it looks like I think more about than you it is a vanity issue. See darling I wasn't born with proper eyelash's just stumps I got bullied such a lot my parents moved me to a different school, so I started wearing fake eyelash's."
"Why didn't you tell us?" asked Dash she felt really bad for snapping at her.
Rarity hung her head "I guess I was frightened darling. Frightened that I would have to re live that memory."
"But we're your friends." Dash started
"True darling but I'm always frightened I'll meet some of the bullies, I'm like Fluttershy in that way."
Dash was quite "They sound like losers to me, they want to see you upset Rarity don't let them win." After all Dash had known Fluttershy longer than the others and she used to get bullied a lot. "Leave the sunglass's off Rarity and if any pony judges you they've got me to deal with."
Rarity “You don't think I look ugly?”
“Is that what the bullies say?” Dash flew beside Rarity as they went back to the castle. “Do they need their eye's tested?”
Soon they get back to Twilight Rarity was shocked that Twilight wasn't wearing her crown and was wearing her yellow birthday dress that Rarity had made.
Twilight chuckled at Rarity shocked expression. “I thought if I dressed down you wouldn't feel so bad. I'm not perfect either Rarity”
Rarity remained silent. What a good friend Twilight was to do this for her she was on the verge of tears as she told them about why she wore the fake eyelashes
“I thought it might be something like that.” Answered Fluttershy. “You acted like me when Dash was telling you off. No pony perfect Rarity even the princesses have their flaws.”
“I could tell you about Shining flaws, but I don't think he would talk to me.” Smirked Twilight. “Anyway our visit a little garden in the castle it's just a little picnic nothing too fancy, shall we make tracks?”
Rarity nodded and followed Twilight she felt silly for worrying over something so miniscule.
“Thank you darling for this”
Twilight smiled as she opened the gate to a pretty little garden it was a good distance away from the palace. It wasn't as fancy as Rarity was expecting it was like the old times.
Afterwards the carriage came to take them back to Ponyvile as they got in Rarity looked out the window her friends were right no pony is perfect. She sighed happily as she returned home.
