Too Cool

Too Cool

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Too cool not to make love to you

Too cool to say it

Too cool to realize the pain I've caused

Too cool to fix what's broken

Too cool not to try

Rainbow Dash watched idly as Twilight scurried around her bedroom looking for something in her books again. It had been such a quiet evening too. Rainbow Dash had found a perfect little bowl cloud hovering over Ponyville and she just couldn't resist an after-dinner nap. However, the odds of a perfect cloud just happening over Ponyville meant that it had to be a drifter. The sound of Twilight's scurrying had awoken her and at first she thought to return home and go to bed, except that for a long while now Rainbow Dash had been watching Twilight very closely and she liked what she saw.

Twilight had been tearing apart the library for a while now, ever since she had returned from dinner with her friends as a matter of fact. All this charging around actually made Spike get up and move his basket to the basement in an attempt to actually get some sleep. After Spike headed down into the basement Twilight had gone upstairs to their room and after gently shutting the door she cast a silence spell about their bedroom and began tearing through the bookcases. A chilly breeze made Twilight shiver and as she turned to close the window when she came nose to nose with a blue pegasus. "Hey."

Outside it seemed that Luna was smiling on Ponyville as they slept on unaware of anything wrong. The shockwave of Twilight's scream actually shut the window before the audible sound waves could be heard. So with the window shut and the room silenced Twilight incidentally created a room with such great acoustics that Vinyl Scratch would have turned green with envy. Unfortunately the room was so great that the rebound was twice as loud as the original sound, twice as ear-bleeding too. Rainbow laid there her hooves over her ears as she waited out the echoes.

When the echoes died Twilight loomed up Rainbow Dash an angry looking crossing her face. "Why are you here," the question was no question, the question was said in a way that demanded an answer.

"Well I was floating by when I heard the sounds of a beautiful mare in distress, so I rushed here to save her." Rainbow Dash closed her eyes, tilted her head up to the ceiling, and held a hoof to her chest.

"More like sleeping by and, did you just call me beautiful?" Twilight was stunned and she could feel her face burn and a pleasant tingling started in her stomach.

"Of course I did," Rainbow snapped out of her pose and trotted over to Twilight to throw a hoof around her shoulders. "Just because you're an egghead it doesn't mean that you're not beautiful, Egghead." The tingling was starting to get worse and lower, however, instead of pulling away Twilight sank further into the embrace.

"Is this a joke?" Twilight didn't want to lift her head, she didn't want to see Rainbow Dash's famous smirk, and she didn't want to hear any confirmation. Whatever force was compelling her to stay in Dash's forelegs also wanted what Rainbow said to be true. Suddenly she felt a hoof lifting her chin to meet Rainbow's eyes. There was no smirk, there was a small genuine smile, there was no laughter in her eyes, there was warmth. Twilight was happy and she didn't know why.

"No," one word, just one word and Twilight was nearly bouncing with joy.

"Why?"

"It just is."

"Thank you."

"Your welcome, now maybe you could tell me what's got you running around and where is Spike anyway?"

"He's in the basement, trying to get some sleep. As for what's got me running around well…"

"Hey, you can tell me anything you know."

"Thanks Rainbow, well, what's love?"

"Why would you, Lyra and Bon Bon?"

"Lyra and Bon Bon, there were just being so affectionate." Twilight sounded the word out as if she wasn't sure that she was using it right, incidentally it also made Rainbow Dash shudder with joy to hear the way Twilight purred the word. "It was like there was no one else there, they were cuddling and kissing." Those drawn out words were really starting to push it for Dash.

"Well they kind of did have a private table tucked outside, if it hadn't been for Pinkie Pie none of us would have known that they were there."

"Yeah, your right Rainbow, what are you laughing at!" Rainbow finally lost the battle between desire and laughter.

"I'm sorry, but, you are such a virgin." Laughter over took her again, effectively rendering her mute for the time being.

"I don't see what my, engagements of, I don't see how that's any of your business," she gave a little snort and held her head up slightly, Rainbow Dash just laughed harder. If looks could kill Twilight would have been down one friend just then, of course without any remains it would have been more likely that Rainbow Dash just disappeared.

"Sorry, but that's not what I meant," was all that Rainbow Dash could choke out before losing what little self control she had, again.

"Oh," Twilight turned a red almost the exact shade of Big Macintosh's coat. "Then what did you mean?" She blushed harder as Rainbow Dash ruffled her mane.

"Relax, I think it's cute. What I meant was that you really don't know a lot about love, do you?'

"No, I mean I've read several books, but…"

"They just can't really explain what you're looking for." She held up a hoof and continued on before Twilight could speak, "look I'm not into all this lovey-dovey stuff myself, however, what I know is that love is impossible to define." A look of intense sadness crossed Rainbow's face and made Twilight start toward her friend. Rainbow Dash just backed away from her, a small smile on her sad face as she raised a hoof to stop Twilight.

"Dash."

"I'm fine, I'm fine, I thought that we were supposed to be talking about Lyra and Bon Bon."

"Well yes, but,"

"Maybe they were getting ready for a good bucking session," Rainbow Dash spoke quickly, desperate to turn Twilight's attention away from her.

"I don't think I've ever seen Lyra and Bon Bon help out at Sweet Apple Acres and its night time, why would they buck apples now?" Twilight's confusion turned to anger as she leveled another incinerator worthy gaze on a laughing Rainbow Dash who was rolling on the floor unable to even breathe.

"Sorry, sorry," of course she wasn't really, but, it never hurt to try to seem sorry though. "They way you used that word though," still chuckling weakly Rainbow Dash rose up on shaky legs, breathing heavily. "It's just that, buck is one of those words that can mean more than one thing."

"Dual-meaning?"

"Yeah, that's it."

"What else could buck possibly mean?" Rainbow Dash snorted into her hoofs and surprisingly managed to keep a straight face, this time.

"Well you know that buck means kicking out with your back legs," at Twilight's nod she continued, "well when a mommy and a daddy love each other very much they buck and that's how babies are born." Twilight turned scarlet in realization.

"Uh, uh, that, uh…"

"Something the matter Twi?" Dash asked innocently as a halo formed above her head.

"I think that you're making it up, prove that there is at least one word that has a dual-meaning similar to buck." Twilight finished triumphantly only to back away slowly as Rainbow Dash advanced on her with a grin that threatened to split her face in two.

"Oh, I've got you dual-meaning right here Miss Egghead." With that Rainbow Dash cornered Twilight and got right next to her as she whispered, "plot."

"The events that make up a story?"

"Yes and," Dash smacked Twilight on her plot and purred, "you have a sexy plot!" Twilight couldn't speak not only did Dash prove her wrong, not only did she smack her on her flank, but she also made her feel very, very good. "You okay Twi, dang I think you're turning redder than Big Mac.

"It's your fault for saying such things and making me feel so," Twilight shoved her hoof in her mouth before she went too far. It was too little too late though as an impossibly wonderful idea entered Rainbow Dash's mind and her smile was growing even larger than when she had pulled one over on Twilight.

"You know Twi, correct me if I'm wrong, but, you trying to study love right?"

"Yes I," Twilight finally noticed Dash's smile and paled at the sight.

"Do you know what else bucking goes by?"

"Uh, no."

"They also call it love-making. Just think it could help open new doors into learning about love."

"That's, how, but, can two mares even, what?"

"Hello, element of loyalty. What would I be if I didn't take some time out of my busy schedule to help my favorite egghead? No need to thank me, I mean think about it for a second. Not only will you learn a bit about love, but, you can also learn how two mares can buck. What do you say Twi?"

"I don't know Dash, I mean I appreciate the offer, but, I'm scared I've never even thought about doing something like this." Twilight stared at the ground when she felt Dash's hoof under her chin again and once more her gaze met Dash's own, caring gaze.

"Do you trust me?"

"With my life." Rainbow Dash then leaned forward and captured Twilight's lips with her own. Twilight melted at the contact and when Dash's tongue tangled with her own she nearly passed out from the passion.

The kiss had been impulsive at best, but Twilight wasn't complaining. When Twilight finally recovered from Dash's tongue she returned the favor. Twilight really was a virgin, not very experienced, but, very enthusiastic. If she was this ecstatic just from kissing then Rainbow Dash wanted to see how excited she could be using her tongue for other things. Slowly and reluctantly pulling back Rainbow Dash looked Twilight in the eyes, "are you ready? We don't have to do this if you don't want to."

Twilight was surprised at Dash's words and considered them for a moment. However, this was Dash and she knew that she would be safe. Without a word Twilight trotted toward Dash and resumed the kiss.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rainbow Dash woke up feeling very satisfied and a smirk dominated her face as she remembered just how much Twilight had enjoyed last night. Licking her lips she reached out and touched nothing. Sitting up in surprise she stared at the empty space and fought a war between sadness and neutrality. Leaning over Dash began scribbling a note when she smelled something burning. Quickly she hopped out of bed and trotted downstairs. Entering the kitchen she saw Spike trying to chisel out an unidentifiable hunk of some black goo from the frying pan.

"Good morning Dash, I tried to cook you something, but, it didn't turn out very well." Twilight sat at the table with a bowl of oats and milk in front of her and another bowl across from her. "So I poured us some oats and milk, if that's okay."

"Sure, thanks Twi." Dash didn't waste any time and quickly pounced on the bowl and another two while Twilight giggled. "That was pretty good," Dash finally spoke after cleaning out her third bowl, "listen I've got to head up to Cloudsdale, got a shift starting soon."

"Oh, okay," Twilight's ears drooped, but, she perked them back up and walked Rainbow Dash to the door and kissed her goodbye. Watching her until she was out of sight she sighed and trotted back upstairs to take a long, cold shower. Just as she entered her room though a piece of paper on her bedside table caught her attention. Trotting over it was a note that Rainbow Dash had been in the process of writing, "Hey Twi, last night was magical hope we can do it again," the quill marks trailed off at that point. She had probably smelled the burning food and came to investigate.

Twilight went through the rest of her day with a skip in her step. Her friends were surprised at Twilight's cheerfulness and tried to subtly probe just who had made Twilight so happy. She defeated all of their probes though, mostly because she wasn't sure if Rainbow Dash wanted anyone to know. So she had gently let them down with a promise to tell them if it became serious. Later that day when she met up with Rainbow Dash she asked Rainbow Dash out on a date.

Twilight woke and stretched enjoying the last night just as much as the first night. At first Rainbow had seemed surprised and hesitant at the thought of another date, but Twilight had convinced her in the end and Dash had definitely enjoyed the after-date activities. Looking down at the sleeping Dash a frowned crossed Twilight's face, just before they had fallen asleep Twilight had told Dash that she loved her. Dash's response had been a classic Dash attitude of, "yeah who doesn't love me."

Dash rolled over a hoof reaching out to cross over Twilight. Smiling again Twilight figured that she had simply said it too early, after all they had only been on two dates within a week of each other. Yeah, too early, eventually Dash would return that love and all she had to do was wait.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Twilight stared depressed at the table not even noticing her friends concern filled gazes occasionally drifting her way. It had been six months since she and Rainbow Dash had first started dating and although they made sure it see each other for a date at least once a week Dash still hadn't said those three magic words and her knowledge of love wasn't going anywhere. However, if you asked her to write a book on love-making then Twilight could have written a best seller, but, for plain love all she had was a romance novel idea.

Rainbow Dash wondered what was wrong with Twilight, the mare had woken her up with a nice breakfast of waffles and fresh juice and told Rainbow that she loved her. So in return Dash had preened herself, an action that always made Twilight giggle. This time though Twilight's face had fallen and she had been like this ever since. Finally Twilight met her eyes and Dash jerked her head toward the side of the restaurant that the girls had met at for lunch. At first Dash thought Twilight wouldn't move, but, with a slow nod she made an excuse to the others and trotted towards the side of the building. Rainbow didn't bother with an excuse and quickly followed her.

"Say it."

"Huh?"

"Say it! You know the words!" Twilight had tears pouring from her eyes as she confronted Rainbow Dash as soon as the speedster turned the corner.

"Look Twi, I've got no idea what you're talking about."

"It's been six months Rainbow Dash, I could write a book on love-making, but, nothing on love itself."

"Hey, remember when we made love in this spot," the next thing Dash knew she was lying on the ground with one cheek burning with pain from where Twilight had slapped her. "Twilight, what?"

"You don't get it do you." Twilight's voice had gone very cold and it scared Dash to hear it. "You've been using me all this time, you've been using me just so you could buck."

"We haven't been bucking we've been," Dash's struggle to her hooves was interrupted by another slap and once again she kissed her old friend the ground.

"We've been bucking! There is no love, there is you and your ego and how anyone who sleeps with you is lucky that you've done that for them!" The tears were now becoming a waterfall down her face and Dash was beginning to feel her heart ache at the sight. "This ends now Dash unless you can get those three words out from your mouth, this is the end."

"Look Twi, why don't we just calm down and talk about this." Dash stopped as pain, rage, and sadness swirled in Twilight's eyes and the tears stopped falling.

"Goodbye Dash," with that Twilight turned and raced away from Rainbow Dash. Dash blinked after Twilight's departure until she felt herself bucked into the wall behind her. Dash looked up from the ground into the angry faces of her friends.

"Element of loyalty, huh, I reckon not. You keep away from Sweet Apple Acres Dash, you're no longer welcome." With that Applejack turned and trotted away. Dash tried to lever herself up again only for Rarity to slap her down.

"Twilight really cared about you Dash, it was obvious that she did. Every time she would look at you her gaze would be filled with warmth and love. I don't know what else to say except this, stay away from my business." Rarity turned and followed after Applejack. Then Pinkie stepped forward and Dash stayed down. However, instead of saying anything Pinkie just looked down at her with a straight mane and anger in her eyes. The staring contest continued until Rainbow Dash looked away and when she looked back up Pinkie had turned her back on her and walked away as well.

"Are you okay Dash?" Since Fluttershy had greeted her with words instead of pain Dash picked herself up off the ground.

"Yeah I," she froze in surprise as Fluttershy slapped her, there was no pain, but the fact that Fluttershy of all ponies had slapped her really made her sit up and take notice.

"I've always been there for you Dash. Whenever you had a bad relationship, even when it was your fault I stood beside you." Even worse than the slap was how cold Fluttershy's voice was.

"My fault, it's not my fault that some of them couldn't keep up with me and it certainly wasn't my fault when they just wanted to use me." Anger replaced shock and Dash found herself with tears in her eyes.

"Ah, I see. So Twilight couldn't keep up with you and that's why you just strung her along. I guess I should have seen it coming I mean she's not nearly as cool as you, doesn't follow the Wonderbolts, and she is an egghead. Yes, The Great Dash is obviously too good for a common pony like Twilight."

"Take that back," Dash growled and slowly marched towards Fluttershy who stood her ground. "Twilight is anything but plain, she's beautiful, she's wonderful, she's one of the kindest, generous, wisest, loyalist, and loving ponies in all of Equestria. I am not nearly as great as she is. I love her and if you don't take back what you said about her I'll," Dash froze with one hoof raised. "You knew that would happen," she lowered the hoof and she could see the relief in Fluttershy's eyes.

"Yes."

"How did you know?"

"All of us saw how Twilight looked at you, however, what no one else saw was that when no one was looking you looked at Twilight just like she looked at you."

"What have I done?"

"What you have always done. You know that you may never get her to trust you as much as she did before."

"I don't care, I don't even deserve forgiveness. The only thing that matters is that she knows that I am sorry and that I love her."

"Even if she doesn't take you back?"

"I wouldn't blame her if she doesn't, I just want to say I'm sorry and tell her those words I should have said earlier, even if they are too late they have to be said."

"How?"

"I have some ideas, but first, can you help me?" Too Rainbow Dash's relief Fluttershy gave her a small smile.

"As long as you are trying to fix what you broke, then yes. What are you going to need?"

"Well for starters, you think that you can teach me to cook?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Twilight hadn't left the library all day and no one had seen Rainbow Dash either. No one aside from the mane six and Spike had noticed anything wrong, however, those that did know what was going on were not sorry for what they did to Rainbow Dash and Dash certainly felt that she deserved what happened to her and more. Still chores still needed to be done and Spike had the idea that Twilight's favorite dish would cheer her up. So getting some bits and a call up to Twilight he left to go to the market.

Spike had just reached the market when he was tackled into an alley. Opening his mouth to scream he was silenced by a hoof. "Hey Spike how's it going?" Dash grinned and then let out a muffled yelp as Spike kicked her legs. "Ow, okay I deserved that and more."

"You're darn right you, wait what?"

"Look Spike I need to tell Twilight I'm sorry and that I love her."

"A little too late for that," Spike's anger returned as he crossed his arms and glared at Rainbow Dash.

"Yeah, I know and I don't care if she never forgives me, but, I have to tell her what I should have told her from the start. However, in order to do that I need your help."

"Why should I help you?"

"Not me Twilight."

"What if seeing you makes it worse for Twilight?"

"Then I'll have Applejack tie my wings good and tight and throw myself off a cliff." What scared Spike the most was the fact that Rainbow Dash actually meant it.

"Uh, okay, yeah I guess I'll help."

"Thanks Spike."

"Sure no problem, uh what exactly are you going to do for her?"

"I have a few ideas, before I get to that though, what is Twilight's favorite food?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Dinner's ready," Twilight rubbed her eyes and slowly pushed herself off of her bed. Turning she trotted into the bathroom to splash some water on her face and comb her mane. Once done she trotted down stairs surprised at how dark it was. The darkness actual revealed a glow coming from the kitchen. Twilight trotted forward at a quicker pace as she recognized the glow as candles and wondering just what Spike was up too.

"Spike what is going, on?" Twilight froze as she entered the kitchen to reveal the last thing she ever expected to see. Rainbow Dash sat at the table facing the doorway and that wasn't half of it. On the table was an old candelabra that had been gathering dust for a while, it had been cleaned and polished till it shined in the candlelight. A vase of roses and been placed close to it and two covered silver platters gleamed in the light.

"I ran into Spike earlier and asked him to let me make your favorite meal," Dash began talking as she circled the table and slowly approached Twilight. "He told me the funniest story about why this is your favorite meal too." The grin that appeared on her face vanished quicker than Fluttershy at a party. "I came here to say some things that need to be said."

"You're too late." Even to Twilight the words sounded too cold.

"Yeah I already figured that, still they need to be said. Twilight I'm sorry for every taking advantage of you and for failing you. I love you Twilight Sparkle and I've been in love with you for a while, I was just afraid to admit it. My first date was with a mare and at the time I thought that I was in love, then she broke my heart. She always argued with her father and I was the latest in a long line of attempt to annoy him, it hurt when she dumped me."

Too say that Twilight was shocked was an understatement. Rainbow Dash always seemed so confident that the fact that anyone could take advantage of her was almost impossible to believe. Still she was torn, a part of her was glad that Rainbow Dash knew what Twilight was going through from first hoof-experience and on the other hoof she wanted to comfort Rainbow Dash. Seeming unaware of Twilight's inner conflict Rainbow Dash kept talking.

"There were a few cases of people wanting to date me for selfish reasons after that, however the worst thing was the fact that in a way I became like that first mare. I went on several dates to try to get over her and when they couldn't keep up with me I left them. I have done a lot of horrible things and this isn't an excuse to try to make it seem like I had a good reason for not saying I love you earlier. There is no good excuse for toying with someone and I'm sorry."

"I don't know if I can forgive you so easily."

"I know and I expect that, all I ask is for six months to try to make up for what I have done, that is six months at minimum, I am prepared to spend the rest of my life to working to earn your forgiveness every single day for the rest of my life. No matter what it would take."

"What if I asked you to give up your dream to be a Wonderbolt?"

"Then I would never become a Wonderbolt." Twilight was shocked at the level of honesty in Dash's voice, Dash was willing to give up her dream to appease her. Twilight's heart pounded at that and for a second her love for Dash welled up.

"Why?"

"Your worth it," the way she said it, calm, matter-of-fact, honestly, without any hesitation only made Twilight's heart pound harder and faster. "I've been in love with you for a while, but I never realized it until you fled and our friends confronted me. In truth if Fluttershy hadn't tricked me into admitting my feelings I never would have realized it until I made everything even worse than it already was."

"Fluttershy?" It truly was a surprise to hear that Fluttershy of all ponies had gotten Dash to face something of this magnitude.

"Yeah, I owe Fluttershy everything. When I was in flight camp I would always stick up for her and when I screwed up at something she would always be there to either support me or give me a shoulder to cry on. She's like the sister I've never had and more often than not she saved me from myself. Whenever I broke someone's heart she forced me to go and apologize to them and when it was my heart that was broken she helped me through those times."

"Fluttershy is pretty amazing," it was hard to believe that the shy pegasus could be so firm and to be able to command Dash was a feat in and of itself. "So what's for Dinner?" Although Twilight already had an inkling and was going to let Spike have it if he had told that particular story. Rainbow trotted lightly over to Twilight's dish and used her wing to remove the cover to reveal eggplant parmesan and spaghetti with garlic bread and spring water. Oh yeah Spike was in trouble.

"My lady," Dash pulled out a cushioned stool for Twilight and waited until she sat down before pushing her in. The meal was delicious and consumed in companionable silence and the roses were so very sweet. Once the meal was over Twilight walked to the door and opened it for Dash. However, just as Dash approached the door Twilight stepped in front of her and lightly kissed her on the cheek.

"Thank you for everything Dash."

"Thanks Twilight, I love you."

"Thanks, one day Dash I will forgive you, but not today."

"I know, thanks for giving me a chance," with that Dash spread her wings and flew on home while Twilight watched her fly off into the moonrise.
