The Observer

The life of a lifeless piece of wood can be both dull and entertaining, given the circumstances. The surroundings and those who inhabit said surroundings can create and change the mood and situation for better or worse. I happen to be in a rare predicament as a carving of a unicorn's head sitting on a pedestal in a library. This library has been unused for many years, so I've had much time to myself. At first, it was serene. I simply loved my isolation from the world. I had grown to love this loneliness more than anything, especially the inhabitants of this town. I could see them peering into the windows from time to time, being curious about the unoccupied library. I felt as though my isolation, my privacy, was being invaded. They had no right to snoop, those creatures. This was my home, and that it would be for as long I wanted it to.

But then the new librarian moved in, and everything changed. I was simply disgusted to see one of those things walk into my home. My horror grew immensely when she started to read the books on my shelves, sleep in the upstairs bedroom of my home, and try to perform scientific experiments. What made my new-found hell even worse were her... “friends.” These loud, obnoxious, petty beings that are always in my home, ruining my peace! At least the librarian enjoyed some quiet from time to time; but her compatriots seemed to enjoy breaking the monotony some way or another.

One of the librarian's friends has some form of an obsessive-compulsive disorder. She needs everything to be just perfect or she can't relax. The perpetual whining is dreadful, but as annoying as it is, she's the least worrisome. Then there's is the one with an accent of a southern land. Obsessed with apples and what she can make them into, she is. Also, being a field worker on a farm, she constantly overlooks the dirt she gets on herself, often tracking it into MY home! It gets worse, however. One of them is the local animal caregiver. This wouldn't be a problem if she didn't have those vermin following her all the time. If I had hands, I would have strangled that rabbit by now... The pain grows still, however, with the hyperactive one. The local baker and party-planner, she never ceases her constant dribble. Constantly talking and talking, fueled by an endless sugar rush, it drives me insane.

But as unbearable as she is, the athletic one takes the cake for my biggest nemesis. Always “stopping in” to check up on the librarian, looking through the books and leaving them everywhere, sometimes knocking priceless antiques and shelves over, altogether creating chaos and disarray in my home. Also she goes on and on about joining a prestigious stunt team, the “Wonderbolts.” Her cocky attitude and repetitive talking about her amazing tricks and stunts is endless. I would have cried tears of joy if I could when she came in one day looking disappointed.

Apparently she didn't make the cut. Serves her right; her “I'm better than everyone” way of thinking cost her her focus and the tryouts. To see her wallow in her self-pity was rejuvenating, but my euphoria was short-lived when the librarian offered to help. She found a book about the specifics of aerodynamics. When she explained how she could help perfect the athlete's moves, the dark cloud from her head was lifted, and the one over mine grew blacker. I knew that such joy in seeing their sorrow was too good to be true. I noticed a silver lining when they decided to leave, but not without one last line shared between them.

“Thanks for doing this, Twilight. You're the best egghead a pegasus could ever have.” The athlete said.
“ It's no trouble, Rainbow Dash,” the librarian responded, “I'm always happy to help a friend.”

Then they left me... and I began to think.

Something clicked in that quick scene. I can't quite place it, but it reminded me of a time long ago, when the previous librarian was around. The interaction she would have with her customers and the feelings shared by her loved ones were... heartwarming. Something I haven't experienced in so long... That last bit the two said to each other reminded me of that humble joy of years past.

I'm not entirely sure where this leaves me. Have I been wrong about these creatures? Can they still have that same effect on each other as they did in the past? Am I the one who has become a distasteful being? It can't be true... No, I refuse to throw everything away and start over, but I can't deny that this makes them more... intriguing. I'll have to observe them more closely from now on. Hmph, listen to me; even with that, I contradict all that I stood for in the past decade.

Confound these ponies; they drive me to re-evaluate my existence.
