Let me guess: He's going to turn into a Nirik and incinerate the guitar?

Spoilers, but given that it's Cinder Glow who started the original fight that led to the stream of silence, I imagine she's worked on her self-control since then.
Yay Kirin!
This is exactly my experience woodworking.
I like the implication that they will take nuts and acorns they can trade. "Yeah, we'll accept payment in almonds, but your cashews are no good here."
Also if Cinder goes Nirik when a cut goes wrong, the workshop goes 'boom.' Dust explosions are terrifying.
"Leaf Day" is a great name for a Kirin holiday.
The water was cold when she got in the bath . . .
Seriously, though, I wonder if Kirin have a higher body temperatures than other ponies?
A good way to stick a hoof to the workpiece . . .
My gut says that plywood would delaminate, but I could be wrong. I'm not much of a woodworker.
This is such a Kirin solution. Could have packed in some clay-heavy soil, and the tube might last a good long while.
Maybe next Leaf Day, somekirin will gift her a set of hole saws.
Always an important factor when ponies build things. Does it have to have that function? No. But it looks cute.
Changeling!
Kirinnovations of our time—the steam locomotive! Just get two Kirin who hate each other to operate it, and it'll run forever (as long as the water lasts), powered only by anger!
(semi-)Seriously, though, if you had a Kirin with severe anger issues, she could run a steam turbine that would provide electricity for the whole Kirin village.
Ooh, that's a good description
Random thought that occurred around this point in the story: I watched a YouTube documentary about an old bellmaking facility some time ago, and some of their jigs were hundreds of years old. Maybe Cinder Glow is about to start a guitar-making legacy.
The best way to get into a project like this is to not realize how much work it's gonna be until you're already fully committed and don't want to give up on the work you've already done.
An author after my own heart!
Having read the blog post now, I'll admit that through the entire story I was thinking that this is written from experience. Maybe not making a guitar specifically, but certainly someone who knows their way around a wood shop. And I see that I wasn't wrong.
Also, interesting choice to keep Rain Shine mute
Also also, the most expensive custom plus I own is Cinder Glow. Dunno if you knew that, but now you do.

Thank you for the lovely comment!
Very much mine too. I wrote that line three or four weeks ago and thought of it a week later when I did exactly that yet again.
Thankfully, many tools have guides or fences that the edge of the workpiece can slide along, which makes accuracy much easier. I can't say it doesn't still go wrong, but it's a significant improvement. And then there are router bearing bits for following templates exactly and that's a whole other league of accuracy.
Yeah, a kirin in a woodshop is a bad enough idea, I think it's something they'd only consider at all if they were reasonably sure they could keep a hold on their tempers. Instant anger is a common human response to sudden pain, too, which hopefully kirin don't have or a workshop injury could rapidly go from bad to worse.
They clearly have much shaggier manes, would that be a point in favour or against? They also live high above sea level, but their village doesn't look particularly weather-proofed, implying their not bothered by it being any colder at that altitude. Equally, I think the Peaks of Peril are quite far south, so they'd naturally be warmer (although so is Kilimanjaro and that's snow-capped).
I wasn't sure going in (and when I wrote that bit), but, as of a few days ago, I can attest that it doesn't! At least not after a single use. Perhaps using a lot of nails to hold it together helps with that too.
I wish I'd thought of that. Coming up with how they might have a metal barrel was tricky, but the pipe was the hardest of the lot!
I think she would definitely appreciate that
I don't yet have a spindle sander (found a way around it on my build), so I had to look one up to see what noise it makes, and it's adorable, bobbing away like a cartoon penguin!
Ouch, should have caught that! I did a search replacing months with moons, should have thought of hands too.
I think when that branch line finally reaches the kirin village, the Equestrian rail service are going to get an influx of new labour and big efficiencies will be made.
That's really cool! And it would be nice if Cinder is, though I don't know how long MDF would last in constant use without disintegrating. She might have to upgrade them to natural wood as she goes.
You've just described every creative thing I've ever done. The guitar, in particular, is precisely that situation. It also helps if you've spent too much money to back out.
Thanks! It had to be Rain Shine, as Autumn Blaze specifically says that Rain Shine sang beautifully, and Rain Shine looks so sad when that's brought up. It helped that I'd forgotten that she then talked quite a bit at the end of the episode. Therefore rewatching the episode as research ended on a frustrating note.
I did not know that, that's awesome. I just googled it and there are several wonderful looking Cinder Glow plushes available. That's so cool, I hadn't expected that for such a background one-off character. Which of these is yours most like?

Anybody else think that, if you put this into audio, it would make a nice ASMR video?
11463450
Thank you I'm a big ASMR fan, and I get exactly what you mean!
In an episode of The Simpsons, Homer had a nightmare that he was being attacked by various famous paintings. This included one that had a guitar by Picasso from when he was inventing Cubism.
Lo, she built the guitar he used as a model for that painting.
Could have been worse. It could have been parasprites.
11463835
Parasprites can be legally destroyed under the Equestrian Removal of Hazardous Non-Equine Creatures Act. No such luck with tourists!
Funny you mention Homer Simpson, one of the most popular posts on the Reddit woodworking sub is inspired by him:

Yeah, I remember an episode where Marge turned out to be really good with tools but nobody would trust a woman with a repair job. Homer LOOKS like a handyman so he would front the job & Marge would do the actual work.
Given the yaks' love of smashing, it makes sense they'd have pretty advanced materials science.
11463623
I've only listened to pony-related ASMR videos myself, but it just seems like it would be satisfying to listen to.
> Superglue was anything but, succeeding only at glueing one hoof to another.
Haha, this is opposite my experience with superglue (cyanoacrylate), which will hold almost any two things together if used properly. I think the only trouble I’ve had with it is attaching PVC to other PVC. Need actual pvc glue for that.
11465525
I'm glad you've had more luck with it than I have!
I would say, try glueing two things together with superglue. Let them dry, and then try hitting them with a hammer until they break. In my experience, the break is always along the glue line, kind of as you'd expect.
I've used those kinds of tools when I worked in a scene shop in college, but don't do enough woodworking at home to justify better instruments. I was smart enough to make a template for the last set of bookshelves I built, so at least all the vertical parts were the same.
I would think that Kirin have learned to not go Nirik just for pain, or else they already would have built their village out of something non-flammable . . . I interpret that canon explanation as being when they get to the emotional point of 'i'll show you' or 'you'll be sorry' in an argument.
That does beg the question of dealing with Kirin foals, since they're presumably less likely to be able to control their emotions, or overreact to little things (in their case, a literal meltdown, I suppose). That's something that canon didn't cover.
It's hard to say which of those factors if any would matter. Shaggy fur can help keep body heat in, of course, but I don't know how much that makes a difference in an animal's normal body temperature. Mammals tend to have body temperatures from 97 to 104 on Earth (according to Google). I never really thought of it before writing this story, but I do like the idea of them being warmer than normal ponies, and I do agree that their houses don't look all that well weatherproofed, so maybe they aren't bothered by cold. Or maybe that was all they had to work with after they burned down their village.
Experience is always a good thing to fall back on. I've done a few 'well, I tried it to see' experiments for fics (and for other stuff, too).
A hollow log would have also been plausible. Fun fact, water pipes and sewers used to be made out of wood in some parts of the US.
Okay, that is adorable. Also I don't trust it, because spinning thing with no guard. . . .
Don't feel bad, I very luckily caught that I used three different names for Blackthorn in my Jinglemas fic just before I published it.
That does beg the question of how long they can sustain their balefire. I would have to assume it's not forever. I don't think that we ever got any real explanation in canon, and then they never brought the Kirin back so we've got nothing to go on.
Yeah, it's crazy to think about making a template that would still be in use decades or centuries later. I do anticipate MDF wouldn't last as long--I think no matter how good the glues they're using now are, they can't really compare to the right natural woods for longevity. But I could be wrong; perhaps if you were to store it properly it could last a long, long time.
The old 'sunk cost' fallacy. I suppose it doesn't count as much for hobbies; if they make you happy than it's money well spent. And at the end of it, you'll have made a guitar and there aren't all that many people who have.
Don't you hate it when canon screws up your idea, especially when you find out after you've already published? I've had that happen a time or two. Sometimes I ignore it, other times I have to fix it or at least write a blog post explaining why I did what I did.
Mine's most like the third one. I was gonna post a picture, but apparently I don't have one online that's easy to get to.
I don't know why there are so many plushes of background characters, I figure one factor might be plush-makers who just like the character and want to make a plush, and perhaps the challenge of making something nobody else has. I bet you can find patterns and embroidery cards for all the Mane 6 so all you've got to do is cut and sew, whereas if you're doing a BG character you've got to do most of it on your own.
Well, that was different than what I was expecting. I thought it would be a story about Kirin, but it was more a story focused on building part of a guitar body. The characters were somewhat incidental to the description of the process. Not being a woodworker myself, a lot of the details didn't carry much significance for me. The one part I could truly relate to was the difficulty in drawing an accurate line and not being able to cut to the line anyway.
Still, a nicely written story.
Luthiery. Isn't that Superman's enemy?
