By popular request, I've posted an epilogue to "Expecting." I hope it'll answer some of the more burning questions, but I often wonder if giving an explicit ending is better than leaving it open to interpretation.
Certainly an argument can be made that an author who purposely leaves plot threads untidy is being a coward, forcing his gentle readers to fill in the blanks for him. On the other hand... "The Lady or the Tiger?"
I suppose it comes down to intent. If I want my gentle readers to wonder, thinking about the possibilities, debating the choices, etc. Then leaving an 'open' ending is appropriate. But I shall not be a coward. I did have a backstory in mind when I wrote "Expecting." I just didn't include it in the original because I wanted a snappy comedy with quick chapters that made readers laugh, not sitting there pondering the myriad of possibilities. Perhaps one day, I'll write a story like "The Lady or the Tiger," but "Expecting" isn't that sort of story.
