This story is a sequel to Flash Sentry Chronicles: The Legend of Everfree
Everything appears peaceful in Equestria and our heroes are getting ready to celebrate Spike's birthday. But everything changes when a new enemy appears, one that they thought was a friend. With war threatening to break out, it's up to our heroes to find a way to stop the violence and defeat this foe. But to do so, they must look to Spike's past. A past even he knows very little about.

Amazing! Cant wait to see where this goes! 🙂
Man! I knew this fic would be Spike-centered but I am so happy that you are exploring Spike's origin! Something Hasbro didn't do on the show! (I was disappointed with them after Father Knows Beast, a wasteful plot)
But damn! His birthday are going to one crazy birthday!
I hope they manages to save Flicker and the rest of dragons from the mysterious villain that is controlled them before it's too late!
Here's highlights:
Oh no! Flicker is brainwashed!
Why do I had a feeling this is foreshadowing?
This is going to be epic!!! A Spike-centric story exploring his origin. I know that you will make this great. Thank you
So far so good I wonder how many chapters this one has.
Interesting.

I'm glad you like it so far. In the words of Pinkie Pie, I'm nervouscited.
Oh man this is going to be epic! I have been looking forward to this story ever since the title for it was first revealed, which feels like it may have been one or two years ago.
This is an interesting start. So "Celestial Advice" has already happened off-screen, so we won't see it adapted in the Season 7 story. Also, Ember has already fallen against whatever this new threat is. I was hoping she would have a major supporting role in the story, but this does help show how bad the situation is already. Also, the rune gate between Ponyville and Canterlot being a success was great. I thought it was an interesting concept when it was first introduced, and now it could potentially appear again in the future for a number of scenarios.
I am certainly looking forward to Spike's origins being explored here and seeing him get more development thanks to this.

I am certainly looking forward to Spike's origins being explored here and seeing him get more development thanks to this.
This is part of the reason that motivated me to propose the idea to Banshee. Spike still had yet to have his big moment at the time. I look forward to reactions going forward.
Holeee......my excitement is though the roof with this tale featuring my fave purple drake!
Figured that Flicker got brainwashed when we saw him last but I didn't expect it would escalate so quickly, and on Spike's B-Day no less! Can't wait to see where you & Joeyjambo122 take this tale, especially since the show didn't gave us some actual insight about Spike's egg origin. Hopefully we get to see my 2nd fave orange dragon early as well on this tale!
While I raise the alarm of the incoming dragon invasion, have some Highlights to keep busy! :
Welp you got me hooked with this!
lol oh yeah, good old sibling rivalry!
Yep Heart, always go to Pinkie at times like these!
Two words..............HOLY CRAP!!!!
Pretty good cliffhanger. next Tuesday can't get here quick enough!
Awesome start Banshee & Joeyjambo122, looking forward to see Spike's role in this tale & maybe him maturing a bit, till the next one!
10790579
It's also because I love the character, if my profile picture didn't make that clear.
Good grief! Who've thought that the beginning of this story would end on an epic cliffhanger.
Also I have a response for Joeyjambo122: it wasn't from the Blazing Dragons cartoon I recognized Flicker's name from but rather it's PS1 video game adaptation, which had a few characters voiced by its creator, the late Terry Jones. I even have some gameplay footage from YouTube to show you if you'd like.
10790610
I know that, it's what made me curious about the cartoon.
So, we're opening with demon possession and war, huh? Okay.
Let the games begin!
10790590
Glad to see some fellow Spike lovers here!
10790587
10790590
Well I am certainly lookin forward to seeing what happens to Spike here.
Although I would argue he has already had a few other standout moments in the series, like helping Twilight and Starlight fight the Evil Flash in Season 5 or him finally coming to terms that his crush on Rarity was never going to go anywhere, I do acknowledge that he hasn't quite had any big focus chapters like several others yet.
I can tell you love Spike, and that's good because the little guy deserves some respect. I know you are nervous about this, but I think given your love of the character and Banshee's record of delivering excellent stories, this seems like it is easily another winner.
10790616
In a sense I'm still saddened that it's creator, Terry Jones died last year. And it was rather tragic too since he was in severely declining health before then.
This chapter was awesome 😎! I really loved the way the characters fought and sounded. The Mane Six, the Defenders, and Starlight were incredible fighting off the dragons and protecting the citizens. Spike having a more prominent role in this story has me pumped even more now. I wonder how he is going to save the day in the end. Seeing Twilight so angry once Malefear capture Spike was chilling. I always wondered what the Princess of Friendship would behave if someone ticked her off too far. And Flash failing to save his friends in the end was something I don't think I have seen before. Shows that the Sacred Light is not always enough. I can't wait to see what comes next.
Man! Didn't see that twist coming...
So going by Malafear's words, Spike might be a reincarnation of a member of long lost Dragon race and Malafear has a grudge against Spike or Silverbolt for siding with ponies.
I can't wait for more on his origin!
Here's highlights
Smolder's cameo appearance
I had a feeling that Spike is not an ordinary dragon everyponies think of.
Dropping big glass on the floor
Did not see that coming.
I also did not see that coming!
What is this? Shyamalan Twist cause we are getting a lot of plot twist in this chapter and we are not even at the end!
Yikes!
Poor Flash.
Man, Twilight is devastated about what happened to Spike, I hope she and others are going to rescue them from Malafear before it's too late.
Awesome chapter!
Sorry, but this fight didn't feel authentic, the ponies were too good, it should have been much more one sided.
Other than that, the invasion kicking off in the first chapter comes off as blowing the load too soon.
Not saying these aren't bad ideas but it doesn't feel earned.
I honestly don't know how to feel about Spike have a previous life and that was named Silverbolt, on the one hand it's nice to have more references to other Hasbro lines, and yet on the other I am not sure Silverbolt in any of the Transformer Continuity families is the one to use as the base for a past life of Spike.
Wow, this was an awesome chapter!
The fight scenes were great as usual, with the Mane 6, Defenders, and Starlight all getting in on the action. I really enjoyed Smolder's small cameo appearance. The wood dragon was especially interesting for me. I openly admit to being a big fan of dragons, and while the fire-breathing version is always a classic I am interested in seeing alternate versions, like ones that breath water or ice instead of fire, or this one that can apparently control vines and nature.
Spike managed to help out once again, helping free Ember so now she can help the others. That was a very sweet moment how he spoke to Ember through the barrier and managed to get through to her, that pleased my inner Spike x Ember shipper.
But the biggest moment was when "Flicker" tried to take control of Spike. So the Big Bad of this story is named Malafear. That certainly paints a good image of him considering he has the word "fear" in his name. But then we learn a bit more about Spike himself too. So, he's a reincarnation of another dragon named "Silverbolt". I know that is usually a name used by an Autobot in Transformers, but I am most familiar with the Maximal version from Beast Wars. If this Silverbolt is anything like that Silverbolt, I know I am going to love him.
Big cliffhanger ending, with Spike, Iron, and Lightning all captured by Malafear. I am anxious to find out how Flash and the others are going to try to save them, and I really want to learn more about Silverbolt and Malafear, and these Mystic Dragons in general.
Such an action packed chapter and I'm honestly surprised that this version of Spike has an ancestor of a famous dragon. But is the latter character named after a Maximal from Beast Wars?
Also I've observed that Malafear's name sounds similar to that of Malefor, the true villain of the Legend of Spyro trilogy.
10801012
Funny, I thought the exact same thing. Though if it turned out Spike was the reincarnation of Spyro instead of Silverbolt, then I guess it would be a bit on the nose with showing how Purple Dragons always turn out to be heroic.
Wow the action went though the roof & this is only the 2nd chapter, color me impressed!
Glad that we finally have a name to go along the creep controlling Flicker & the rest of the dragons, this Malefear's sure one nasty piece of crap! Taking not only more powerful ponies but also taking Spike (after having his mind-control crap backslapping him). Was wondering if you were gonna include Twilight's reaction at seeing Spike taken & you didn't dissapoint, after all she's his mom/big sister figure!
Also seems we got some info at who Spike might've been at a different life, interesting!
As we pick up the pieces, let's go though some Highlights :
Oh Smoldy, it pains me seeing you like this!
Oh yeah, crap got real!
Heck yeah, you go Spike!!!
Sorry creep, this dragon won't be controlled, especially by the likes of you!
Welp you done it now, Mama Twilight's pissed!!!
Damn, seeing Flash lose a fight so hard was heartbreaking!
Now I can't wait till the next chapter, awesome work you 2!
PS : Don't let that story-critic primadonna discourage you from writing stories JoeyJambo, you rock!
10801128
Thank you.
10801029
There are fanfics on that?
10801277
None I know of. Just something I noticed myself.
Okay, my interest has been piqued. Let's see where this story takes us.
10801012
The name does come from the transformers character, but that's all they share.
10809371
Fair enough.
Really interesting take on how Celestia found Spike's egg... I really didn't see that coming! Full of surprises!
So Spike is Silverbolt that got aged down to an eggs? How did that happened?! And he was a friend with Starswirl, Twilight's idol?! WHAT?!?!
Starswirl is more friendly compare to Shadow Play where he was being jackass toward anyponies, especially Twilight who look up to him (beside Celestia) and he was being grumpy old stallion about Pony of Shadows being evil despite he was the reason for it! Sorry for my little rant about him.
Here's highlights
Yeah! I want to know how did you got that egg!
Wow... didn't expect Starswirl, Twilight's idol being the one who found Spike's egg.
Starswirl? I thought...
Is that... Silverbolt?
SPIKE IS MYSTIC LIGHTNING DRAGON?!?!?!?!?! WHAT THE HELL?!?!?! WHEN DID SPIKE EVER SHOOT LIGHTNING?!?!?! I AM GOING CRAZY FROM THIS!!!!!!!
Wait for a minute... how come Spike never shoot lightning before?
Well, that explains why no one remembers Mystic Dragons since they are rare creatures and hard to find.
I do smell ship tease between Silverbolt and Fira.... wonder what happened to her?
Unless... something is off about this. Why Spike have more silver in his past life than his current life? Fira got more purple than Silverbolt and she can fire breath than him.
Bolty? Cute nickname.
Great chapter!
Honestly, I liked the mystery of Spike's egg better, because sometimes it's better to not know the answer (see Doctor Who Season 12 episode 10/Season finale 'The Timeless Children and the responses to it as well as the Star Wars Episode IIX The Last Jedi and Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker and the reactions to them). Also this whole story really cheapens Spike as a character, instead of being an alien ophan that was nurtured by, in that universe, objectively good beings, like Clark Kent(Superman/ Kal-El) and Son Goku (Karkarot), which shows how much the ponies as a society and a culture have to offer to the dragons and points out the importance of nurture, now he's the reincarnation of a long lost maximum goody-good-hero-savior-person without his own true identity.
I get that most of the readers like this story, but what purpose does it serve? To show Spike off as a hero? That's been done several times, for example The Crystal Empire, namely because people mistaken King Sombra to be the Darth Vader to Twilight's Luke Skywalker when he's the Sauron to Spike's Samwise Gamgee. Or is this to make him 'Dragon Lord' Spike? Well that utterly throws his giving of the Bloodstone Specter to Ember into the trash. It is it to show that he as an individual is better than most dragons? Dragon Quest and Gauntlet of Fire already cemented that fact.
How does this challenge Spike as a character? As much as people (myself included) don't like Father Knows Beast because of the character Sludge, that actually forced Spike to examine himself as a dragon and a person, forced him to make a decision that reflects his maturity and growth as a person. Sure it would have been nice to learn Spike's actual origins, but that misses the point of the episode, which is, and I am going to quote Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, "He have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy."
What is the point of this story in the series? What does this entry have to offer that justifies why it was written and for it to be placed here in the timeling? I can grant Legend of Everfree's excuse of 'the human world Flash and Sci-Twi electing to try out a relationship' (the whole mahou shojou/super sentai thing is still stupid) but what does this have to offer? How will this contribute to the rest of the series? Why should any reader care? We all know that the end of this Ember is going to become Dragon Lord again, Flicker is somehow going to be freed of Malafear's procession of him, via his or Malafear's death after the later reforms his body or an exorcism, peace between the ponies and dragons will be restored, and we're going to go into Season 7 with most of this having little effect on the season. Heck we haven't even been given a pre-season eight Smolder cameo.
This was a cool chapter
Well, that is certainly interesting. We got a bit of background on Spike's egg and how Celestia obtained it. Even if we have a theory on how Spike survived in it for so long though, we don't know for sure how he was turned into an egg. Hopefully we will get an answer to that eventually.
I was surprised to see that Silverbolt knew Starswirl the Bearded. For a pony that "didn't understand friendship" he sure seemed to make a lot of powerful friends in his day. Some of Silverbolt's explanations were interesting too, like different types of dragons needing different elements to hatch. Since he, and by extension Spike, is a Mystic Lightning Dragon, then that explains why Spike finally hatched when Twilight zapped his egg. The magic was like a lightning bolt. Though I am curious why Spike hasn't used Lightning yet then, only fire.
It was also funny to see that Silverbolt seemed to have a thing for that dragoness Fira. I'm curious to see what happened to her. I still ship Spike and Ember the most, but if Spike were to somehow meet Fira in the present I can only imagine how awkward things might be between them, or if the ship tease from Spike's former life as Silverbolt carries over. It would be hilarious.
Now the fight is being taken to the Crystal Empire. I hope Cadance, Shining Armor, Flurry Heart, Ruby, and Sunburst will stay safe.
Now that was a cool moment. Seeing so many different dragons. I really hope more of these will appear in the present after this story.
Sweet backstory on where Spike's egg came from, never expected Starswirl's involvement in it. Plus it seems that the whole Pony of Shadows happened just as he gave the egg to the royal sisters for safekeeping. Now I can't wait what Spike will do once all of the pieces come together at the end of this tale! That cliffhanger at the end there was the perfect hookup, well done!
As for today's Highlights :
*hugs the purple alicorn* I know Twilight, I know.
Alright Royal Sisters, spill it!!!
Now I'm looking forward to this reunion between Starswirl & Spike at S7 finale!
You & me both buddy!
lol not gonna lie, I would have done that as well!
Still trying to figure out how the taken Knights are powering up *these dragons* so to speak!
By that cliffhanger it seems the action's gonna crank up again at the Crystal Empire next time around, looking forward to it!
Oh dear. If Malafear's attacking the Crystal Empire then it can mean one thing: he's after Ruby next.
id he kidnapping them due to their elements matching the dragons like trying to revive them or womething
Gee, a lot of what you're churning out for this series lately really reads like a shonen anime. Unfortunately, I don't enjoy the genre enough to fully appreciate all the work you're putting in. That being said, you've got good ideas story-wise.
10810663
While I can understand and respect your opinions about this story and the mystery of Spike's origin might sound "unnatural" because of the reveal. I feel mixed about it. Although, I am still willing to continue to read this story. The creators worked hard on this for years and it would be respectful to keep reading until the end. Maybe we will be surprised with unexpected twists. Who knows? (Please note: I am not criticizing you on this in any way. You make a fair argument and a few valid points about the flaws)
BTW, I just want to say we did get a Smolder cameo in the previous chapter.
10814847
I going to make a prediction about the rest of the rest of this entry
The specifics may elude me, but let's be sincere, the board strokes are easily derived. But no matter what Spike's connection to Silverbolt is, this takes away from Spike's character because it makes Spike different from other dragons by his nature, when Spike is a compelling character and interesting dragon because Spike is different from them by his nurture.
The comparison between Goku and Vegeta is interesting not they are both Saiyans, but because Goku grew up always approving himself and in humility, Vegeta grew up entitled and that natural power is all that matters and how Goku's nurture changed Vegeta. And while the DBS Brolly movie, has done wonders for Broly as a character, there isn't any thing of interest between Goku and Broly given their simular natures.
Thus I ask, how does this farther Spike as a character, maybe if Spike was related to Malafear and it's revealed that Malafear was raised much like Spike, then that would be something that would shape Spike going forward, but with the focus on Silverbolt, Spike is no longer different from other dragons because of how in many regards Ponies have a better society, now he's different because of how he was bred
10814939
I guess we will have to wait and see how this story turns out in the end.
Wow! What an intense chapter!
Heart is definitely far from experience, he really need to cut his Leeroy Jenkins crap.
It's interesting that Banshee chose to give the dragons average lifespans but how old is Torch?
Here's highlights
SPIKE IS THE SON OF SILVERBOLT AND FIRA!!!!! I BEEN JOSSED!!!!!!
Uh.... I guess... yes?
You may be an asshole but I will give you a point for putting a rune spell on Ember to protect her from Malafear.
REALLY HEART, REALLY?!?!?!
You are so unbelievable, Heart. 😡
YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
So Iron, Lightning, Ruby, Flash and maybe First Aid & Heather Bloom were involved with stopping Malafear? I swear if this isn't reincarnation, I going to lose it!
Great, he's Shang Tsung of this universe!
No shit, Sherlock.
Good chapter.
Let me check my predictions,
Malafear will first, for all practical purposes, sack The Crystal EmpireCheckSpike will learn the connection between Silverbolt and himThey are father and son, CheckNot as many points as I hoped, but yeah Malafear and his dragons are in the process of sacking The Crystal Empire and it takes little to correctly infer that Silverbolt is Spike's dad. Still takes a lot away from Spike as a character because he's no longer special due to how he was raised, but now he was born special.
What consitutes an average life span? Also it takes away from the Dragon-ness of dragons.
You should have been more adamant in your resolve, because a dragon's longevity is a key part especially to what can categorized as 'Western Intellectuals' (Think Smaug from The Hobbit) or 'Eastern Sages (think Haku from Spirited Away or Shenron for Dragon Ball).
I am not saying the story is bad, I am saying that it takes away Spike's uniqueness in his world by making him born special when what makes him special is how he was raised. He's a lot like Clark Kent that way, he has the power to rival any dragon, but he has a heart, mind and soul tampered with the Equestrian culture of Love, Friendship, Fellowship, etc. which enables him to achieve things no other dragon can do because to them the only way to solve a problem in the MLP FiM universe is to burn it until it is no longer a problem.
Could drop the whole Spike's origins plot-line, or instead of having Silverbolt as Spike's father, make Malafear the father and give Malafear an origin that for all intents and purposes is the same as Spike's, because that will actually challenge Spike as a character, force him to question himself, have some conflict about himself, knowing that his upbringing is not a guarantee that he won't be come a monster, that everything is ultimately in his talons to decide what and who he is and it should be that conflict should be at the heart of the story, not everyone trying to stop Malafear from reconstituting himself mainly because we know the end, they are going to beat him, free the dragons, and everything is mostly going to go back to the status quo as of the end of Celestial Advice and the start off with whatever will be the first chapter of Flash Sentry Defender of the Peace Season 7 be it Bottled Up, A Flurry of Emotions, Rock Study Friendship or Fluttershy Leans In or whatever Banshee wants to start the Season 7 proper with. What lasting effects will this entry have other than Spike is no longer special because he was raised by Ponies, he's special because he was born special.
It would be more compelling if they don't. For a few reasons
I could go on, but I think I've made my point
10821109
What consitutes an average life span? Also it takes away from the Dragon-ness of dragons.
I believe the average human life span.
10821228
okay
Wow, battle at the Crystal Empire! Awesome! The big battle against the Wood Dragon was intense. But as soon as they finally managed to beat it, we get two more new dragons to take its place.
The big reveal with Spike's true relationship with Silverbolt came as a surprise. He isn't a reincarnation of him or a de-aged Silverbolt, he's the son of Silverbolt and Fira! I guess that explains why we never saw him do Lightning magic like Silverbolt. He inherited his mom's fire nature instead.
Silverbolt's explanation on how Spike survived is pretty cool, but also a bit depressing. An egg belonging to a Mystic Dragon surviving for as long as needed until it needs to hatch to achieve its destiny sounds cool on paper, but then there is what happened to Silverbolt, being passed from person to person, not knowing your parents or original family. Poor Fira seemed so excited to be a mother, but she never got to meet her son.
We also learn a bit more about Malafear and his plans. He can steal the elemental powers of other dragons for himself. It looks like that ending implies he can do it to ponies too, and is somehow using the Royal Knights to power his other dragons.
Soul stealing always gives me the creeps. Though Malafear's line is a bit fitting since I finally watched the Mortal Kombat movie. He definetly seemed to be channeling his inner Shang Tsung here.
Fire Heart, you might be tough, but you're basically a Charmander trying to fight a Torterra. It won't end well for you.
I really hope it will be a good ending. Good chapter.
Heart, you little stupid colt !!!!! An order is a order, stay put !!!!!
10821109
Yeah I think he should have kept the Dragon lifespan.
