It didn't take too long until the armies of the Endless Night reached a small tributary of Her Radiance's Crown, next to the far-reaching borders of the Heartlands. With its forces broken and ponies cowed, only a single fort remained between the Crescent Queen and an unshakable foothold into Equestria.

Frayed Arrow never expected to discover a new species, let alone a sapient one. The Vespiquines - or "wasp ponies" as they're colloquially known - proved to be quite receptive to the idea of Harmony and rapidly integrated into Equestrian society.

Millennia after being banished from the face of Equestria, King Sombra stirs restlessly in his lightless prison, held alive only by his dark magic and the desire to take vengeance against the Elements of Harmony. Especially the one who sent him there.

Harmony, however, is an inscrutable force. One willing to grant him a second chance in a world far different from the one he remembers.

For now though, he only needs to head towards the light.

The story is set right before S2.

A small band of guardsponies find themselves surrounded in their city. Their enemy already savors her victory, but she will learn that even the darkest night must yield to the Sun.

Under the just guidance of the princesses, Equestria has prospered for thousands of years. Yet not a single soul remembers how the kingdom came to be or where its twin diarchs came from.

During a simple tea party, Princess Celestia decides to reveal the answers, causing Twilight to call into question everything she thought she knew about her mentor.

After Sunny Starscout and her friends restored magic and united the pony tribes once more, roads were built between the cities and a treaty was signed proclaiming a union between the three tribes, granting the right to all ponies to freely move and live in whichever part of the fledgling Equestrian Union they wanted.

The resulting economic and population boom forced the newly-forged nation to glance outwards at the massive stretches of unclaimed land that laid at their hooves. Soon teams of pegasus pioneers ventured outside the borders to broaden their horizons.

All seemed well, until one day a team arrived home in distress from their northward journey. Their rapidly-weakening bodies were covered in frost that didn't seem to melt, even though it was the middle of summer. None of them could give a good explanation what happened, other than that they experienced something terrible up north. Fearing the worst, the government decided that further investigation is necessary into this concerning phenomenon and there is only one group of ponies, who can fulfill this task.
