An AU story idea that I am unlikely to write that I found on my GDrive.
After the rainbow from the Elements of Harmony blasts Nightmare Moon from Princess Luna, fragments of the nightmare’s power end up in all the Element Barriers. The fragments do not lead them toward rage and destruction, but to increased powers and self confidence. Their bodies change subtly: their colors are richer, jewel tones instead of pastels. They get taller and leaner (think Fleur De Lis). Also, their physical, racial, and cutie mark related abilities are significantly increased, including getting a “super power”. I've indicated their new colors and powers with their names:
Royal Twilight: Super powerful magic like levitating and reading all the books in the library at once, teleporting the whole group from Ponyville to Canterlot, shields that can stop a blast from Celestia, etc.
Golden Fluttershy: Shadow powers like being invisible in shadow, moving through shadows, or animating shadow creatures.
Platinum Rarity: Manipulating huge masses of small items at the same time to create things out of their components such as reweaving raw cloth into finished dresses without a sewing machine or creating a house from a pile of raw boards and a bag of nails. Also useful for binding a troop of soldiers in the straps of their own armor.
Indigo Rainbow: Super-Rainboom flying speeds, flying laps of Equestria. Crashing through barriers, like castle walls, without getting hurt.
Crimson Pinkie: Super-Rainboom running speeds, running laps of Equestria with Rainbow Dash. Taking out a whole troop of soldiers by bouncing off them like a pony sized pinball.
Vermilion Applejack: Super-strength and durability. Buck down a castle wall. Shrugs off magic blasts and great weights that might hit her.
The girls initial challenges are social ones. Given their obvious changes, it will be hard not to have their relationships with friends and families change as well. They will need to guard against arrogance and internal conflict. Celestia and Luna treat them wearily because of the nightmare power they carry. The girls ability to wield the Elements of Harmony will be restricted or lost if they act outside their aspect, get too arrogant, or if their friendships are not maintained.
I must admit this sounds like an amazing idea sadly I don't think I'd be able to pull it off either so i'll wait for someone else to accept the challenge.
