I appreciate Gallus as a Royal Guard. When he was introduced, we didn't know anything.. and then later we learned he was homeless and picked up off the street, implying he was an unwanted creature dumped on Twilight's school. He didn't want to go back, because there wasn't anything or anyone for him there. In consequence, Equestria gave him a home, and a sense of belonging.
