Babs Seed huddled down in the corner of the room. She rocked back and forth, knife clutched tightly in her hands. She stayed like that for what felt like hours, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. The sun was going to rise soon. She would be safe then. Nothing bad ever happened in the daytime.
When her legs began to get that pins and needles feeling, Babs dared to stand up. Whoever was lurking around had probably left by then, right?
"It's gonna be okay, babygirl. It's gonna be okay," Rhody wasn't sure if her panicked whispers were for the girl in her arms or for herself.
Girl was something of an understatement. Charlie was eighteen now. An adult, a woman by many standards.
But she was still her babygirl.
Rhody didn't even remember pulling the gun out of her holster. The gunshot was as much a surprise to her as it was to Jack. The tall man looked down, seeing the hole in his suit jacket, seeing the spreading stain of red.
"I... I don't," he said, taking a few steps forward before halting, his body stiff. A single, odd sort of laugh left his lips. "I guess, that makes us even," He let out a groan of pain, falling to his knees.
