Scramblers and Shadows

Politicians prey on the vulnerable, the disadvantaged and those with an infantile sense of pride in a romanticised national identity which was fabricated by a small to mid-sized advertising agency.

Robin Hood morality and a sad cat's sex optimism · 12:40am Sep 15th, 2013

There are two interesting things I want to show off!

First is the Robin Hood Morality Test. For a professed amoralist, I'm pretty interested in morality and its variations, so this was a great find. It's very quick to do, so give it a shot. And it would be totally badass if you were to tell me your decision. (The psychological analyses aren't so hot, mind. They're pretty clearly slanted. Still, worth a read.)

Fun things on the horizon. · 11:33pm Aug 28th, 2013

The past three weekends have been pretty hectic; Nine Worlds con followed by a trip to Devon with university pals followed by Buck con. But now that's done, which means I have more time to devote to writing, which means a flurry activity is coming up:

*This weekend will see me publishing the Scootafic, all helpfully polished and proofread.

*Next weekend, I'm going to try my luck with a bizarre horror oneshot called Lyra Grows Fingers. Yes, seriously.

Craft: Crowding and Leaping; Focus and Trajectory · 12:42am Aug 13th, 2013

I recently obtained a copy of Ursula K. Le Guin's Steering the Craft, and, being perverse, went straight to the final chapter. The concepts therein piqued my interest, and I decided they would make a good subject for a blogpost. This is another post that might-maybe-possibly become a series.

Canon interpretation: Donkeys! · 11:11pm Jul 29th, 2013

Donkeys are cool, and it's a shame that they get so little attention in both the show and the fandom. I think they're much more interesting than gryphons[1], for example. Like zebras, donkeys are similar enough to ponies to make their distinctions stand out more.

This might become a story · 8:54pm Jul 25th, 2013

In any case, I couldn't get this scene out of my head, so I had to write it down. I've also made an attempt to make my prose more ornate than I usually do. Here you go:

Canon interpretation: Advanced Equestria · 8:50pm Jul 17th, 2013

I don't care much about headcannon. Headcannon is monolithic, something to argue over, upgrade, whatever. Far too barren. The setting as we see it is largely undefined; there are a multitude of interpretations that are (mostly) consistent with the sliver of setting we do see. That's what I prefer: a variety of interpretations of canon to be valued for how interesting they are and how fertile they are for stories.

A (non-ponyfic) recommendation and mini-review · 11:48pm Jul 6th, 2013

Zombies, I think, are overrated. So, when I heard that the BBC was making a new zombie-based television drama called In The Flesh I was a teensy bit skeptical. Were it not for the source of the recommendation, Peter Watts[1], I would have likely not bothered at all. My misgivings were unfounded. ("Really? In a recommendation blog? Why, you do surprise me!")

It was awesome.

The pipeline and contents thereof (plus a call for prereaders) · 12:08am May 24th, 2013

I'm still around! Sort of. Things on the ponyfic front are progressing glacially right now because of that whole university work thing. (Turns out a degree takes up a significant chunk of one's time. Who'da thunk it?)

Like a kick in the teeth · 12:52am Apr 6th, 2013

On Wednesday I gleefully took Use of Weapons by Iain M. Banks from my mailbox. A few hours later, I learned that Iain M. Banks has terminal cancer and is unlikely to live longer than a year.

Shit.
