Applejack knew that Apple Bloom was growing up, and she knew that one day it would be her job to tell her about where baby ponies come from, why she suddenly has weird feelings for colts (or fillies, maybe), and what happens to mares every summer that brings the previous two facts full circle. She just didn't think that time would be now. And she also didn't think she'd have to tell her sister's two best friends about it at the same time.

In hindsight, Rarity probably wasn't the best pony to run to for help.

Mere weeks from giving birth, Rarity invites Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy to stay with her while her husband is away on business. In the months since they last saw each other, Rainbow had only grown more bitter over Rarity's sudden leave from Ponyville. A few misplaced words were all it took for everything to fall apart at the worst possible moment, and nopony was quite prepared for what happened next.

** Set almost three years after Twilight's disappearance in A Decade Lost (or, just over seven years before Twilight's reappearance). Reading A Decade Lost beforehand is not necessary, but should clear up any questions you have.

Twilight's fears over becoming a princess convince her to attempt a spell to glimpse the future. Unfortunately, she ends up doing a bit more than glimpsing; the spell turned out to be permanent, meaning she never returned back to her own time, and therefore didn't exist for ten full years.

Her absence caused a fall-apart of the elements of harmony, and Twilight is horrified to see how they've changed without her. She doesn't know how to teleport back, so she instead tries desperately to figure out what happened and piece everyone's lives back together.

Fluttershy and Rarity overhear an alarming conversation between Twilight and Spike. Panic ensues.
