At the time when Nightmare Moon was banished to the moon, Princess Celestia created a back-up plan in the form of 7 Moon shards that she later scattered into space for 'safe keeping'.
In modern day Ponyville we follow Esalar, a renowned Canterlot Photographer, who unexpectedly comes across one of these Moon Shards and is chosen by Princess Celestia herself to join with the Mane 6 to retrieve the rest of the Moon Shards as and when they are discovered.
