The shining princess of the sun, the one and only Celestia. In Canterlot she sits, bathing Equestria in light, both literal and metaphorical. Her kindness is infinite, and she always seems to have a serene smile upon her face that could put even a raging manticore into a happy stupor.

But the guards of Canterlot Castle know different. They've seen that smile, a finely crafted mask honed by centuries of rule, crack and show the sorrow and guilt hidden deep within. Years of observation and accumulated knowledge have led them to one vexing conclusion: this only happens when it rains. But why?

Bad things happen in life; this is all but guaranteed. But sometimes these bad things are so terrible that the universe decides it needs to give someone a break. In Jacob Forner's case, this manifests as being transported to a magical land of talking ponies after suffering through an unspeakable tragedy. And being transformed into one of the locals. Except he has....bat wings? What kind of pony has those? And why does everyone keep giving him dirty looks?

Poor Jacob soon learns that the universe is not done letting him suffer, but where there are lows there will soon be highs.
