Sunset and her friends have had their fair share of thrilling adventures, both magical or otherwise. But all of that changes when, one day, they find themselves stepping into a conflict larger than they ever thought they'd know. A war that has raged for longer than human civilization, which threatens to consume all. Both enemies and allies fall from the sky, and the girls soon find that they face a challenge greater than any they have faced before.

For as long as anypony can remember, the known world has been divided into three great nations, each keeping the other in check. But at the centre of them all lies the peaceful Everfree Glades, where ponies have only ever lived in harmony in spite of the larger domains that surround them. In the quiet village of Ponyville, a young mare named Twilight Sparkle dreams of a day when all peoples can be as one.

For a thousand years, the alicorns of House Solaris have ruled over the ponies of Equestria with wisdom and care. Now, in the present, Twilight, youngest daughter of the Queen, goes about her day as befits a Princess of the Realm.

Sunny never expected to have an adventure, but that's exactly what recent days have thrown at her. And with that turbulent time now over, she and all the ponies she has come to know look ahead to a bright future of fun and friendship.

The last day or two has certainly been eventful for young Twilight, and now that it's over she finds herself not only in a new home, but with five new friends to go with it. She's happy, to say the last, but she can't relax just yet. After all, she has an important job to do, and one for which she will soon find herself receiving a surprising, but not unwelcome guest.

A full millennium has passed since Princess Luna walked free in Equestria. But now, after the darkest chapter in her life, she is herself once more, and free to rule her nation alongside her beloved sister. But as she acclimatises to her new surroundings in Canterlot, she receives an unexpected visitor. One who makes it abundantly clear to her just how much has changed since she was last in the world.

What does it mean to be a strong nation during a time of peace? What happens when all around you look to your state with wariness, suspicion or fear? What place does your homeland have in the future of the world? These questions and more plague the mind of Sunset Shimmer, recently promoted Colonel of the great Imperial Army. Thankfully though, she is not alone to consider them.

With the once-fabled Nightmare Moon vanquished, all of Ponyville is abuzz with talk over the grand adventure Twilight and her friends had in saving them all. And Twilight too is pleased at how things turned out. But as she joins her newest friends for some quality time, she discovers that there is one among them who has more than a few worries about where such excitement might lead to.

Though Chrysalis has been defeated and the Changeling nation have accepted friendship, there are still a few drones out there in the world who continue to hold onto the old ways. One such outlier, out on the hunt in Canterlot, runs out of luck when he finds himself meeting one of the very ponies who defeated him the last time he was in this city.

Many are the tales of otherworldly beings coming to mortal peoples to offer their powers in exchange for something precious. Twilight never gave those stories much attention, until one such being arrived in her home one day, offering her one of those infamous contracts. Unfortunately, the demon might have wanted to choose his clients more carefully.
