Into the Sewers · 8:45am January 11th

A lot of right-wingers are kind of panicking/scratching their heads right now at the still-ongoing blowback on what happened on January 6th. Some are veering into whatabboutism, some are trying to argue it was Good, Actually. More talking about a communist takeover or holding out the final, desperate hope that somehow Trump will still be President after noon on January 20th. Seems to be a surprise to a lot of them. As if the last four years hasn't happened.

True Identities. · 3:46am January 9th

It's time for a name change.

My name is Blarghalt. It's always been, really. It's the name I've usually gone by on the internet since I was 17. Eight years ago, I chose the name 'Bok' because, well. I was embarrassed. I didn't want people knowing that I wrote fanfiction about colorful horses. Eight years ago, if someone had mocked me about writing MLP fanfic, it probably would've legitimately bothered me.

Now? I write MLP fanfic. What of it?

In Which Bok Comments on the Election · 10:50pm Nov 8th, 2020

You know, I've never actually made a blog about politics before. Sometimes I comment on blogs that have a political nature, but that's a recent development from the last year. Even after 2016 I kept quiet, seeing this website as a place I could write colorful horse fanfiction rather than a place to worry about political stuff.

Politics on here wasn't my problem. Until people started getting obnoxious. And when there's nazi stuff being celebrated on the front page? Where I can see it?

There are no rules. Only principles. · 10:25am Jun 8th, 2019

Humans tell stories. We always have, and always will. But what we haven't always done is tell stories in text, and it's not something that comes to us naturally the way verbal storytelling does. To compound on this, I've noticed over the years that the lessons we teach people on how to read and write when they’re young give them a functional grasp, ie you can understand what they’re saying at least, but it helps precisely none towards the actual art of wordcraft.

Nice weather is a non-event · 2:53am May 30th, 2019

It's something of a cliche at this point that a story literally starts with 'it was a beautiful day in ponyville'. It's mocked a lot, and for good reason. At the same time, I very well think there's a reason it became the butt of so many jokes in the first place, for a very simple reason: it's how a very large chunk of the episodes start. A pan-down from the sky, or a pan-up from the ground, showing Ponyville having nice weather.

Writing Rampage · 10:20pm May 24th, 2019

I recently went to EFNW. Had a lot of fun.

And now that I'm back, a familiar pattern returns to me, as it does every time I come back from a con. I came back with a lot of horse story ideas, and I intend to write every single one of them down.

Original Character, Please Steal · 7:56am May 24th, 2019

Hi, I'm Bok, and I've somehow tricked you into reading a blog post about fanfiction.

In terms of fics, OCs are weird creatures, and I don't mean this because so many of them are literally weird nonsensical color-clashing abominations. What's always struck me as odd about so many people's OCs is how very, very defensive and possessive their creators are about them, leading to the ever-repeated phrase Original Character, Do Not Steal.

Jojoing · 8:59pm May 21st, 2019

There's generally a few giveaways on this site that an author is really inexperienced. Most of them are pretty obvious: walls of text, bad dialogue formatting, consistently bad spelling, but most authors are quick to fix these when they're pointed out. However, there's one trait I've found is nearly-universal, especially if the author is very young, and is somewhat harder to simply point to. I dub it 'Jojoing', after the anime/manga where characters tend to explain action as it happens.

Death to Kill Your Darlings · 9:58pm May 14th, 2019

There's a lot of pithy writing advice out there. One-liner phrases that sound clever, but don't actually tell you anything, and in a lot of cases, are actively harmful. Probably the most popular of these is "kill your darlings", which I've seen regurgitated ad nauseum in basically any sufficiently large group of writers I've ever interacted with. Over the years, my stance on this phrase has hardened, and my position is set:

Retrospective: Evergreen, Everfree

One of the earlier fics I wrote, Evergreen Everfree was a Gravity Falls crossover originally titled under the name Friendship is Supernatural, which I ended up changing down the line because there was already a bunch of stuff called that.
