Short version: their workplace got bought by a different company, their pay's been cut, and they someone urgently need a bit of money to get things sorted out.

See here. They urgently need money, to keep themself and their mother, both of whom are dealing with health problems, from being evicted with nowhere else to go. Being able to provide them somewhere else to go would presumably also help, but I don't know the details on that.
