Some observations on ponyfic after 150 reviews · 4:41pm Nov 26th, 2014

With the publication of Ponyfic Roundup 32, my little weekly(ish) report on the fanfics I've read recently has now covered exactly 150 stories. That's nowhere near as many as some of the more prominent reviewers around here have read, but it's still enough for me to write a blog post about. So...

Everypony loves Haven · 4:46pm Nov 22nd, 2014

My highly colourful 100-word flash fic, Haven, picked up second place in the Weekly Contests, er, contest. (Because of its brevity, I've made it a chapter in my Little Bits anthology, hence the tag on this post.) There were ten entries, of which only one or two were less than serious attempts, so I'm quite pleased with that result. Still, the runner-up spot does mean

Yay, Twilight's Library success! · 11:27pm Nov 18th, 2014

I'm pleased and proud to be able to say that We Who with Songs Beguile has become my fourth story to be accepted into Twilight's Library. This is probably the first fic of mine where I'd have been disappointed if it hadn't got in, since I think it's a damn good read, quite frankly. Just don't go expecting a celebratory song from Mazarine.

An irritation regarding dialogue · 1:46pm Nov 12th, 2014

More specifically, regarding having dialogue "corrected" when it's not actually wrong. I'm sure I've been at fault over this at some point, but this is my blog and I feel like a moan. So... we can probably all agree that it's annoying when you come across something like this:

"I know you're in here." The pony said.

"This Fragment of Life" featured on Twilight's Library! · 8:50pm Nov 3rd, 2014

Two blog posts in one day? And about the same story? But yes: This Fragment of Life is now the front-page featured story on Twilight's Library! It's the first thing I've written that's ever made that status, so I'm really rather happy about it. All I can really add to that is... :yay:

50 likes for "This Fragment of Life"! · 1:00am Nov 3rd, 2014

I know this is small beer for many of you guys, but This Fragment of Life has just become my first ever ponyfic to gain 50 likes on here. Rather amusingly, given that it also has five dislikes, it's simultaneously my best-liked and my most-disliked story. Come to think of it, it's my most-read story as well, with a smidge above 700 views. As for why it got so much attention (by my standards), I don't know.

Is the feed semi-broken for anyone else? · 9:02pm Oct 31st, 2014

I still get the list of updates, but they're in completely plain black-on-white with just avatars and links; no site stylistic stuff at all. The rest of the site is fine; it's only the feed that's got this problem.

Edit 8.40pm GMT 1 Nov: now fixed!

A little contest entry · 5:11pm Oct 26th, 2014

My latest story, It Doesn't Matter Now, is in fact my entry for the latest UK of Equestria fanfic contest, which had a free prompt. My story is tagged [Random], but it's not quite what you'd necessarily expect from that tag: it's more of a completely weird and out-there soft-SF/fantasy short with Pinkie being very Pinkie indeed at times. It's only a little over 1,300 words, so give it a shot if you have 15 minutes spare.

If you download any of my fics... · 2:59pm Oct 20th, 2014

...please don't use the EPUB option. It's currently broken, in that italics (and other styles, but italics most crucially) are stripped out. That makes parts of some of my stories quite hard to follow, and occasionally outright changes the meaning. HTML downloads do preserve italics, so use that option instead. (You can convert HTML to EPUB in Calibre if you have that.) Hopefully this site will fix its broken EPUB service soon, but as of now I don't recommend using it.

Quick UK PonyCon report · 5:45pm Oct 14th, 2014

I went to UK PonyCon in Leicester last weekend... and I loved it. Maybe even more than BUCK. It's an all-gens, all-ages con, and I found that atmosphere really nice. The age range made it feel cute and warm and safe, and reminded us all that we bronies are not who MLP is truly for. The music was nicer, too: melodic rock rather than incomprehensible noise. :P It wasn't as massive and slick as BUCK, but that was fine by me. Depending on where it's held (it moves around from year to year)
