The process of getting your story in front of people is sort of a hit-and-miss proposition. The absolute worst thing you can do is just throw a story into the pile and hope that it gets noticed. The site drops about 50-75 new stories in a day, and getting yourself separated from the pack is not easy. In my first month on FIMFiction (November of 2011) I made the mistake of posting twelve stories in the span of four weeks. This was a disaster. Wanting to have your story get noticed is entirely natural, and taking the following steps can help you find some success:

1.) Find yourself a pre-reader or an editor. I know that I never really started to learn until I started using the experience of others to guide me. Fortunately, FIMFiction is full of such folks! If you click on this link, it will take you to a list of all the groups who have editors and proofreaders who can help you. The quickest turn-off to story readers is poor grammar and mechanics.

2.) Find a good piece of artwork that really represents what the story is about. People do, unfortunately, still judge books by their covers. It's always best to get an artist's permission to use the art, and link to it in the authors note or attributions of your story.

3.) Make absolutely sure that the short description and the long description are free from errors and are about the story, not about you. You only get one chance to sell your story to the site; don't squander it.

4.) Get some followers before you post a story!

A.)Join groups and make insightful comments and post engaging topics to be discussed. Let people know that the story you are eventually going to be adding to the group has something important to say about the group's interest, and is bringing something worthy to the table by showing them how interested you are in the subject and that you can articulate yourself.

B.)Press the Watch button on authors you enjoy and comment on their works and blogs. When you see an author or a user who has caught your attention, Watching them puts your comments in front of their audience, and getting a reply from a noted author shows the site that you are an individual whose opinion is worthwhile. Offer constructive criticism and genuine praise where deserved.

C.) Do whatever you can to get people's attention and let them know that you have something of value to add to the community. The more people who you can engage before you start posting your stories, the more will read it when it comes out. Comment on stories!

Best of luck with your work!
