You can change your avatar like this:
At the top of the page are the following buttons from left to right "Groups" "your account name" "Settings" "Library" "FAQ" and "Chat"
If oyu point the cursor at the button with your name on it a drop down menu will show up with a few more selections. The eighth of this selections is titled "Edit Avatar" if you click that one, you will be lead to the editing page for your avatar, there you can upload pictures from URLs or your PC, any given restrictions are shown there too.
