This explains some of it. I entered the Loebner Prize Contest one year and hung out online with the people involved, arguing about their chatterbots. Even got to meet Richard Wallace of the AI "ALICE" and (outside the group) Douglas Hofstadter. I have several related little AI projects focusing on the idea of having a game-like simple environment with a body for the AI to control, but sadly haven't put much effort into them for years.
