Hearth's Warming Eve has arrived at Sweet Apple Acres with the usual flurry of snow, mirth, and frenzied preparations, but all seems to be well as Big Macintosh settles down for the night. The house has been cleaned—ready to be buried under a mound of colourful scraps and sweet crumbs—the farm is enjoying one of its brief periods of rest, and the most precious things in his life are snugly tucked up in bed, ready for a day of hard-earned merriment to come. All is well.

And then Dash says two words.

There's a mare I see every day in town; you may know her, and you've certainly heard of her if you don't. I've watched so many ponies make assumptions about her that it makes me want to scream, before I sweep in and show them the error of their ways. They think that just because she's sweeter than her favourite desserts that she can't stand up for herself; they think that just because her eyes are a little funny that she can't be beautiful; they think that just because she's the mailmare that she can't be the most wonderful, amazing, gorgeous mare in existence.

And because I've seen them think this way for so long, maybe she's started to believe that too...

Not anymore. I'm here to put things right.

Though it would not always be apparent, and indeed would often be shown in the most oblique of ways, Big Macintosh would find that his relationship with Rainbow Dash would provide good case studies to demonstrate this.

Rainbow Dash has been pushed into flying something heavy and precious halfway across the country in the middle of a freezing night. She finds this less than ideal.

And every time, as soon as their conversation steers towards that most intimate of topics, Rainbow Dash falls silent.
