Celestia travels to the Crystal Empire in search of Sombra from this Equestria after Starswirl the Bearded seals off the portal to an alternate Equestria where he is not evil. Arriving, Celestia's hope grows as she sees that this universe's Sombra has yet to be completely overpowered by fear and convinces him to accept her teaching in ways to combat the darkness.

When Applejack spots Derpy staring off into space, she wants to know if the lonely mare is all right. It turns out that Derpy has a lot to think about, including quite a few other pegasi who venture to Sweet Apple Acres in the middle of the night to do the same.

Excited for a long awaited flying lesson from Rainbow Dash, the lone Cutie Mark Crusader Scootaloo hates to admit that she's disappointed when Rainbow never shows, again, for the seventh time.
Wandering in a saddened state, she doesn't even realize how far she's gone until the blackened sky opens up and starts pouring down rain, leaving the trail back to Ponyville impossible to follow home.

Nyx, the changeling, has had enough of Chrysalis and the hive life. The resentment only builds while being starved because of his refusal to let go of a sliver of a memory, that memory is a word, one that brings hope, happiness, and a bit of love. Convinced that this sliver of a memory will be worthwhile, he seeks out the word lingering on his mind. "Fluttershy."
But, his thoughts telegraph more than he wants to as he flees, allowing Chrysalis to track him the whole way. Tormenting him from changeling territory all the way to Ponyville, Chrysalis won't let him go without something in return. To break Nyx's link with the hive, he begs Fluttershy for help who in turn asks the foremost magical pony in Ponyville, Twilight Sparkle to sever the connection.
