So, what is a plot hole?

Plot holes are what happens when a story contradicts itself.

This can come in a number of forms, and doesn't relate to just characterization, though that's often the biggest kind of plot hole. Let me define a few of what I consider to be major sources of pitfalls for writers.

The twist plot point. The twist ending. We all know them, and have read stories that use them. There's quite a lot of them here on Fimfiction, because its an easy way to drum up some tension and a surprise. Lead one way, then go in a drastically different direction, or even just a surprising direction by the end of the story.
