> Frostbitten > by The Blu Equine > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > We're Going to Have a Little Fun - Prologue > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was a bright sunny spring day. Everything was perfect, and that's just what Jack didn't like. The newly appointed Guardian of fun thought that the day needed to cool off. With little effort, he leapt from his perch allowing his friend, The Wind, to flow through his body. Floating through the air, Jack brought a big chill to the previously warm day. Content with his work Jack found a freshly frosted tree and took to one its branches, reclining on it with his staff across his chest. Jack loved tree branches, they allowed him to watch the children enjoy his day and, if need be, add a little fun to them. However, Jack's relaxed attitude quickly turned sour as he heard an unknown voice above him. "I always admired someone that liked to mix things up for the sake of fun." Upon hearing the voice, Jack leapt into a defensive posture, readying his staff in case the owner of the voice proved hostile. Years alone and unbelieved in left Jack slow to trust. "Relax Guardian. I mean you no harm. In fact, I need your help." the voice came yet again, this time a little higher up. "Aaaand a little to your left youngster." the voice replied. "Who you calling young? I'm probably much older than you, now show yourself." Jack said, still wary of this mysterious figure that had some sort of magic. Jack didn't question magic, but he still didn't trust it either. "Again, I mean you no harm Guardian. Now you would be wise to lower that staff." came the voice again. Jack turned his head to the left slowly and saw a floating head. The floating head wasn't what surprised him, but what the head looked like. The face of a man was very distinguishable, he had a long pointed nose that took up most of his face. Underneath was a gray goatee that was bordering white. Atop the man's head was the truly remarkable sight, two different horns, one of a deer and the other from a goat. His eyes frightened Jack, they were very large and each had their own sized pupils, however both were the same color. Blood Red. "Now before you ask, I am what is known as a chimaera, a creature made up of many other creatures. You may call me Discord and I am the very unknown Guardian of Chaos. And I couldn't help but stay away from this chaotic little day you managed to whip up." Discord explained, seeing the bewildered look on Jack's face. "Now that that's out of the way I have a little proposition for you my chaotic little friend. I have some, lets call them friends, that don't know how to have any fun. Now I've tried to show them how to enjoy life and have fun but they don't take to it. That is where you come in. I need you to accompany me and show them how to enjoy life." Discord continued. "I don't think I can help you Discord. I need to be here to protect the children in case anything happens to them. Sorry, not sorry." Jack said, attempting to get rid of this mysterious "Guardian" "Jack, be reasonable. The children are safe and if anything happens I'm sure the other Guardians can take care of it. I mean how did they handle things in those years before they had you? Come on, it'll be fuuuuun." Discord taunted, trying to appeal to Jack's center. "The answer is no. Now buzz off, I'm trying to enjoy this day." Jack said, becoming increasingly frustrated with this new "Guardian". With a loud pop, the man's head disappeared, or so Jack thought. What Jack didn't notice was the eagle talon floating above his head. "I don't think you understand Jack, you're coming with me" Discord said, as he brought the lone talon down on Jack's head, slowly graying him out. With a loud pop, Discord appeared in all his glory. He appeared to be nothing more than a common hobo to the normal person. Mismatched clothing adorned his entire body, even his shoes didn't match. The oddest part of the man was his left arm which was an eagle's talon. "Now Jack don't you think we should get back? Wouldn't want to keep our 'friends' waiting." Discord asked. "Of course, lets go have some fun." came Jack's reply. Jack grabbed onto the man and with a snap of Discord's talon they both disappeared with a loud pop. > They Don't Believe in You - Chapter 1 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A loud pop resonated through the regal streets of Canterlot. Many ponies were ignorant as to what the popping they heard occasionally meant and only saw it as a minor inconvenience to their days (or nights!). To the few that knew what it signaled, they scurried and hid for cover, fearing the worst from that draconequus that used to rule the land. Nopony except Fluttershy truly trusted Discord. And they all had absolutely no reason to. After his chaotic reign nopony seemed to forgive him or even want to give their former tyrant a second chance. After his 'reformation' he spent his first few days back in Canterlot castle terrorizing the workers and guards. Seeing that Celestia and Luna had to figure out a way to allow Discord to use his magic without wreaking absolute havoc on the populace. They all decided that the plot of land that served as the spot for his stone prison would be ideal for the old ruler. He was allowed to do whatever he wanted to the land on that plot as long as it didn't spill over anywhere else. The few weeks immediately afterwards lead to the most chaotic redecoration Equestria had ever seen. Finally having fun again Discord decided he would need a proper home and permanent residence. With a loud pop a building that looked nothing more than a toolshed appeared on a plot of land that was Discord's. Upon entering however, anypony could see that it was nothing but pure chaos inside. The first room was very regal and looked almost identical to the entrance hall of Canterlot Castle. However, the other rooms each had their own little twist on reality. The first room after the entrance was completely upside down and nothing followed the standard laws of gravity. The next room was where discord slept and was in a constant state of movement. His favorite was circular but the room seemed to have a mind of its own and changed its movement constantly. This was about as far as anypony dared to go and every other room terrified those that knew of the shed. However the throne room was said to be a sight to behold. Though those were the words of Discord himself so nopony truly took them at face value. The shed itself became somewhat of a national oddity and came to be known as The Hall of Discord. Nopony, save the princesses, dared to go near it after the first few weeks afraid the hall would change and they wouldn't be able to find their way out. Arriving with a loud pop, Discord had changed back into his normal state. "Oh it does feel good to stretch my wings again." Discord said to what appeared to be nopony. However, unbeknkownst to everypony Discord had brought a friend back with him from Earth. "Who are you talking to Discord?" Came a voice from behind him. Discord knew that voice, oh how he loathed that voice. It was the voice of his captor and co-ruler of Equestria. It was the voice of none other than Princess Celestia. "To what do I owe this..... pleasureable.... meeting Celly? I've kept my magic confined to our agreed area so don't even get me started on that. Or did you come to your senses and realize how good Equestria would look with some redecoration performed by yours truly?" Discord asked, wiggling his eyebrows at his last statement. He drove his point home by snapping his talon causing all the trimmed hedges in the garden area to come alive and dance around the two god like creatures. "No Discord, I need you to answer a few questions about where you were today." Celestia said, trying to ignore the amusing sight around her. She had to admit she had been very skeptical about releasing Discord from his stone prison. This skepticism didn't diminish after he had been "reformed" by the Elements of Harmony but in the past few weeks, Discord and his antics had started to grow on the Sun Princess. Why just two weeks ago for her birthday Discord had conjured the largest cake she or anypony had ever seen. His antics, although always chaotic, never seemed to mean to hurt anypony. That didn't excuse him when they did, but most of the time they were harmless and, though she would never allow her to say it, quite enjoyable. "Where I was? Today? That is a big question. A better question would be where I wasn't. I wasn't in Canterlot castle sabotaging preparations for Luna's birthday party. I wasn't in Ponyville terrorizing your "most faithful student" and making cotton candy clouds. I wasn't in Trottingham interrupting a certain milk mare's daily duties. I wasn't - " Discord was interrupted by Celestia putting her hoof in his mouth. "Discord. Answer the question." Celestia stated flatly. "Today I travelled across vast cosmoses to visit our dear friends the seaponies, who I heard you banished while I was in stone. That wasn't very nice of you Celestia, anyways, while there they crowned me their King and pledged their loyalty to me as long as I would aid in their return to Equestria and overthrow of your rule." Discord said, sarcasm dripping from his every word. "Discord... I am being serious here." Celestia said, growing increasingly frustrated with her old friend. "As am I Celly. Don't believe Big Bad Discord?" And with that he snapped his talons turning his garden area into a gigantic fishbowl. The Dancing hedges had stopped and were now various sculptures and objects anypony would expect to see in a foal's goldfish bowl. And standing, well floating in front her was Discord. Adorning his head was a crown, in his hand was a trident, and where his legs and tail had been was now the tail of a seapony. "Now for my first royal decree, I hereby banish Princess Celestia of Canterlot from the oceans of Discordopolis." Discord said while snapping his talon one more time. With a loud pop, Celestia found herself in her throne room seated beside her sister, slightly disoriented. Regaining her sense of balance and where she was Celestia let out and audible sigh causing her sister to look up from her newspaper. "Discord?" Luna asked, as if she didn't already know the answer. Celestia simply nodded her head before continuing. "I just have this feeling he's up to something, but he's as hard to read as ever. Have the guards monitor the area surrounding his. If he's up to something I want to stop it before he can hurt anypony." Celestia said. "Just let him have his tiny patch of land. He wouldn't dare using his powers outside of his 'pen' sister. He wouldn't even dare lift a claw or talon to harm anypony as long as we rule and the elements are active." Luna reassured her sister. "Besides we made it possible to know whenever he expends any amount of magic worth knowing about with that loud 'pop' spell. All of Canterlot heard him reappear this afternoon. Relax sister, everything is going to be fine." Feeling better with Luna's Logic, Celestia strode down the hall to the dining room and prepared for her dinner. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Now what should we do first." Discord pondered. "I thought you said we'd be having fun. You're almost as boring as bunny." Jack replied coolly. "In due time my impatient Guardian. First we need to hide you just in case somepony is able to see you." Discord replied. "What do you mean? Won't everybody see me and recognize me? I mean I'm Jack Frost, bringer of snow days and fun times. Who wouldn't know me." Jack replied, full of himself. "Who do they think makes all these awesome snow days and blizzards?" "That'd be the pegasi." Discord explained nonchalantly whilst pointing a talon into the air. Jack looked where the creature pointed and saw that he was right. In plain view was a group of pegasi clearing the rest of the clouds for the day. This particular group had wandered too close to the castle and were being wrangled so they could be sent where they were needed. It had been a lovely summer day and everypony was enjoy the last few hours of the warm sun. "First I'm going to put you in a cloud, then I'll set you adrift to where my....friends..... are. The rest is completely up to you, although I would personally recommend multiple mountains of snow as a great starting point." Discord said explaining his plan to the Guardian. "So why a cloud? Why not something that wouldn't be so suspicious if it was caught moving on its own?" Jack asked, still confused by the way weather worked here. "Clouds are inherently magical and are able to be moved by pegasi. It isn't too odd to see a cloud moving on its own and an extra cloud over a town isn't too suspicious." Discord continued, snapping his talons returning the underwater marvel to its grassy chaotic form. With a second snap Discord conjured a gray storm cloud. One more snap illuminated Jack's entire body causing him some distress. "What the hell was that? Why do I feel so odd and tingly?" Jack asked alarmingly. The spell had left another lingering effect, an odd taste in his mouth that reminded him of some strangely bitter citrus. "Relax Mr. Freeze, I just made it so you would stick to the water vapor in the cloud. Also if anything were to happen to this cloud, say a rainbow maned Pegasus happened to clear it, you would be able to float in the air as if you had your friend Mr. Wind on your body." Discord explained nonchalantly. "Now off with you, I need you to teach some ponies how to have fun!" As Jack finished climbing into the cloud Discord snapped his talons yielding a loud explosion followed by the disappearance of the cloud. "Discord!" the voice of a royal white alicorn reverberated through the streets of the city. "Oh Celly, if only you knew what fun I have planned for your most faithful student." Discord muttered before disappearing inside his shack. > Big EYES - Chapter 2 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Twilight Sparkle was enjoying her walk through Ponyville. It was a perfect day, sun shining bright, minimal cloud coverage, new books in her saddle bags, fresh pile of snow crunching loudly under her hooves. "Snow? But its the middle of summer. Why would there be snow in Ponyville today?" Twilight thought out loud. Knowing the answer was probably just Rainbow Dash pulling one of her pranks Twilight kept trudging along back to the library trying to ignore the blatant disregard for seasons and temperature. Twilight's attempts to ignore the problem were futile as she arrived outside her home, the Golden Oaks Library. Although Twilight had learned to take a good prank, this one had been taken way too far. Her entire library was covered in snow and Twilight was at her breaking point. "Rainbow! What is the meaning of this this snow! Its the middle of summer for Celestia's sake, why would you be dragging out snow clouds now of all times?" Twilight inquired casting her gaze skyward. She expected to see Rainbow Dash hiding on some cloud but all she could see was a lone gray cloud showering Ponyville in a fresh coat of the fluffy white powder. Twilight's eyes began to twitch at this impossibility, "But the snow shouldn't be able to stay cold enough to fall from the cloud, let alone settle on the ground in piles." Twilight stated before falling on her haunches. There she sat motionless, continuing to ponder how this impossibility could be made possible. Just as she was remembering Commander Hurricane's study in weather clouds and how they operated in an attempt to figure out this summer snow, she noticed the telltale streak of a certain rainbow-maned pegasus overhead. "Rainbow you need to stop your shenanigans right this instant! This snow is way over the top, even for you!" Twilight shouted to her friend. "Wasn't me Twi! Honest! Best I can guess is this little puppy is a prototype cloud the scientists up in Cloudsdale are working on. Trying to make the weather more automated or something like that. I'll just corral this puppy back to Cloudsdale and let the sun take care of the rest." Rainbow Dash explained. However, as Rainbow Dash soon discovered, corralling this cloud would prove to be a harder task than originally thought. It was as though the cloud had a mind of its own. The cloud was starting to win out over the prized pegasus of Ponyville as her fatigue began to show. Jack just chuckled to himself from within his cloud. He had carved out a hole from where he could poke his head out and see what was actually happening from the safety of his cloud. "Not that I need to worry about anything seeing me, its not like anything could believe in me out here." Jack muttered to himself. Poking his head out from the cool confines of the cushiony cloud he noticed he was heading towards a lake after his little bout with the pegasus pony. He just sat back and let the wind take him even closer to the lake. However he heard a noise he hadn't heard since back on Earth. It was laughter. Peering out from his cloud Jack spied a bright pink pony playing just outside of town at the lake he was drifting towards. She was giggling and enjoying the day just lazing in the middle of the lake. Everything seemed normal to Jack when out of nowhere the poofy pink pony gasped loudly and sped off towards the town he had just winterized. Thinking nothing of it, Jack worked his magic on the lake and trees surrounding it. Spying a lone tree adjacent to the lake Jack decided he had earned a little break and jumped from his cloud, slowing descending to a fat tree branch jutting just over the water Jack had just frozen. Creating a winter day wasn't easy in the best of conditions, and this hot summer day was some of the worst conditions Jack had ever worked with. Feeling drained Jack relaxed on the tree branch, laying his staff across his body Jack was able to doze off. He could finally enjoy his magic for himself and not worry about if anybody else was having fun or not. "Ooooooh a new friend what's your name? Mine's Pinkie Pie but everypony just calls me Pinkie, but then again you don't look like a normal pony, what are you anyway? You look like a monkey but without all the fur covering your body. Aren't you cold, no? Hm..... Oh I know who you are! You're Jack Frost aren't you! Huh huh huh tell me I'm right, I love being right especially when its about new friends, but then again you really aren't new are you." Came a sudden voice just above Jack's head. Startled awake Jack tried to make sense of the whole ordeal. Looking around to make sure that he was the intended target of the energetic pony's rant he settled with just pointing a finger at himself and giving her a quizzical look. "Of course you silly, who else would I be talking to?" the pony replied. "You can see me? I was told nobody would be able to see me here. Guess I'll have to have a talk with Discord when I get back." Jack stated clearly rattled by this sudden realization that these ponies might be able to see him. "Of course I can see you, why wouldn't I be able to see you, you're like the coolest guy around. Well that is before the pegasi figured out how to make you and the others obsolete." Pinkie exclaimed loudly. "Oh that means I get to throw you a welcome-back-to-Equestria-even-though-we-don't-need-you-anymore-party!" "No, no parties I just need to wrap this up and get back. Can't believe Discord told me that nobody would be able to see me just because pegasi control the weather." Jack shouted, become more agitated the more Pinkie explained. Trying to comprehend how Pinkie could see him coupled with the fact that Discord probably was just using him to get back at these folk started to return some of Jack's white glow instead of the gray color Discord had given him. However, his entire thought process came to grinding halt as he saw a rainbow colored blur coming right at him. Picking up his staff in case the pegasus decided to attack him. However, he found this action pointless as the pegasus simply flew up to his cloud and kicked it into non-existence. "Finally got you, you pesky loud. Oh hey Pinks, forgot you were out here today." Rainbow Dash said, noticing her friend was out here by herself. "What're you up to out here alone? Shouldn't you be preparing for the next pony's birthday?" "Oh Dashie, the next pony's birthday isn't for another 6 days and I'm not out here alone. I'm out here with my new friend, Jack Frost! He's the spirit of winter in all those books Twilight has!" Pinkie said, rather matter of factly. "What are you talking about? The only two ponies out here are me and you. I think you should lay off all the sweets for a while Pinkie." Rainbow Dash replied. "He's right here Rainbow! And he's not a pony he's this weird hairless ape thing and he walks on - " Pinkie was quickly cut off as Rainbow Dash shoved a hoof in Pinkie's mouth. "Pinkie I don't have time for your silly games, I have to get back to Ponyville and help Twilight figure out how to melt all this snow. The sun doesn't seem to be doing its job and Twilight doesn't want to conjure any fire spells to help. Spike tried to help, but Twilight doesn't want him to "burn the whole town down" so the progress is slow. Have fun out here Pinks, I gotta jet." Rainbow Dash stated flatly before flying back to Ponyville. "I see what you're trying to do now Pinkie. You're just trying to confuse me and turn me against Discord. It'll never work you temptress!" Jack screamed, visibly upset. "No honest! I believe in you Jack Frost its just, well we handle our own weather now so many ponies have forgotten about you and the others." Pinkie explained, trying to make more progress with the spirit. However it all appeared to be in vain as he had lost any of the white glow he was starting to get and was the dull grayed out color he originally was. "Come back with me and I'll show you that I'm not trying to trick you honest!" Pinkie continued, begging the spirit. "If I agree to go, will you at least be quiet until we get back to town?" Jack inquired. "Cross my heart, hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye!" Pinkie exclaimed. Jack looked scared and unamused, noticing this Pinkie just vigorously nodded her head. The trek back into town had been unusually chilly for Pinkie, but she just attributed this to the fact she was leading the frost spirit back to town. "All right where to first, and yes you can talk again." Jack asked of the pinky pony. The walk back was, as promised, silent. Though she made some of the strangest noises as she bounded along the path back. "Well, lets go see Twilight at the library first. I'm sure she'll be able to help us out, or at least point us in the right direction." Pinkie said before racing towards the large oak tree. "Let's get this over with." Jack mumbled to himself as he went inside the building.
