What does Rainbow do when she loses one of the things that means most to her, her ability to fly?
It has been a couple of years since Shining Armor passed away. Twilight and Rainbow Dash are now a couple. Rainbow has even moved into the library.
Twilight and Rainbow are having the best time of their life.
But after an accident Rainbow ends up grounded for the rest of her life. How will Rainbow and Twilight cope with the fact that Rainbow Dash, the best flyer in Equestria, will never fly again?

It was an ordinary day in Ponyville. The sun was shining, only a couple of clouds were visible in the sky. The ponies were going on with their ordinary business.
On a field outside ponyville Twilight and Scootaloo were watching Rainbow Dash practicing her flying skills. Scootaloo was cheering and applauding at every awesome stunt Rainbow did. Twilight just smiled at the fillys antics and watched when Rainbow practiced.
The enthusiasm that Scootaloo showed reminded her of Rainbow when she was talking about The Wonderbolts or when she talked about some new moves she just made up. She wandered further and further away into her memories of Rainbow Dash. The finest memory was when they started to date.
\\\Flashback/// It was the same evening of the day when Rainbow had returned from The Wonderbolt academy. Twilight had asked if Rainbow wanted to come over for dinner to celebrate that she was back.
The other were away from the town for different reason. Spike were up in Canterlot to spend some time with some old friends, Pinkie was visiting her family, Rarity was up in Canterlot for visiting a client, Fluttershy was visiting a old friend in Cloudsdale and Apple Jack was in Appleloosa to help them with the harvest.
The evening draw closer while Twilight were preparing the dinner. She decided to make the most delicous dish she could since it was to celebrate that Rainbow was back. And also the simple fact that i was Rainbow.
The hours passed quickly and suddenly Twilight heard a crash and then a knocking on the door. She smiled cause she only knew one pony that would do that. She went to the door and opened it, and there she stood, Rainbow Dash. Rainbow smiled when she saw Twilight and said."Hello Twilight. Thanks for inviting me." Twilight smiled back and said."Well, we most celebrate that you are back from the academy." Rainbow got a sad face and then looked down at her front hooves."Yeah, but it's sad that the others couldn't join us." Twilight brought her head up so she looked straight into Rainbow eyes."I know Rainbow, but i know they are as happy as i am and that they wouldn't want you to be sad." Rainbow smiled a little and said."I guess you're right." Twilight snorted a little."I know i'm right." Rainbow laughed at that."So the egghead part is showing up again?" Twilight gave Rainbow a smile and said."Well of course, you need to feel that you are home again after all." \\\Flashback///
She was disturbed from her thoughts when she felt Scootaloo tugging her side and pointing hysterically at the sky. She looked up and saw Rainbow. Falling towards the ground. Rainbow had flew up high, way up over the highest clouds and then dove straight downwards. But in mid-fall something went wrong. She started spinning. Rainbow couldn't control her dive.Twilight terrified watched as Rainbow got closer and closer to the ground. Rainbow managed to pull out in the last second, but her wings was locked in place by the sheer amount of pressure on her wing muscles when she pulled out of the dive. Twilight screamed as she saw her marefriend crash into the west orchard of Sweet Apple Acre at a speed close to that of a sonic rainboom.
She ran there as quickly she could. The sight that met here made the heart skip a beat. A long path of broken branches and a long furrow in the ground, and at the end of it she saw Rainbow Dash laying complety still. She screamed her name and ran up to her. The sight that met her would had made her faint any other time. But now she was just full of concern and worry for her marefriend. Rainbows body was covered in bruises and cuts. One front leg seemed to be broken, but worst was her left wing. It was almost torn off at the base, blood flowing out from the deep wound. A growing pool of blood was just underneath it. Twilight formed a magical field around the deep wound to prevent to much bloodloss. She heard a loud gasp behind her and looked back to see Scootaloo just standing there, staring with horror at Rainbow Dash. Twilight ran up to her too block the wiew of Rainbow and gave her a small push towards the town at the same time she said."Scootalo, get help! Quickly!"
Scootaloo snapped out of the smaller shock state she was in and looked at Twilight. She then nodded and speeded off towards the town on her scooter.
Twilight then walked back to Rainbows side and laid down beside her and cried. She silently whisperd."Please Dash, don't leave me, stay with me, please."
Twilight was sitting in a couch in the waiting room with Scootaloo. She was thinking back on what had happened the past hours. Scootaloo had returned with a couple of unicorns from the hospital that did a quick check and bandaging on Rainbows wounds. They said that her quick thinking with the magical field over the wounded wing probably saved Rainbow's life. And then brought her back to the hospital. She was stopped at the door to the emergency door. They said that the doctor needed all concentration he could get to be albe to do the surgery and that he wouldn't be able to do just that if she and Scootaloo was in the room. So they were now waiting while Rainbow was undergoing a operation in the emergency room.
Hours passed while they sat in silence. Eventually Scootaloo broke the silence when she asked."Twilight, will Rainbow be ok?" She looked up at Twilight with tears in her eyes. Twilight hugged her and whisperd."Yes, she will be fine." Scootaloo hugged Twilight tight as she started to cry. Twilight just sat there, letting her cry at her shoulder while she gently rubbed the fillys back with her hoof and whispered."Hush now, it will be fine, you'll see. It will be fine." Scootaloo eventually fell asleep, exhausted. Twilight smiled down at the sleeping filly.
She then looked over at the clock that sat on the wall, It showed 11 pm. They had now waited for almost ten hours.
A nurse came with a blanket that Twilight gently draped around herself and the still sleeping Scootaloo. She quietly thanked the nurse and asked if she knew anything about Rainbow, but the nurse just shook her head and walked away.
Twilight then just sat there staring at the door that led into the corridor were the hospital rooms were. She too eventually fell asleep.
Twilight was woken up by a gentle shake on her shoulder. She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes with her hoof and then looked up to see Apple Jack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity and Fluttershy stand their with a concerned look at their faces. Apple Jack was the first one too speak."Y'all alright there sugarcube?" Twilight just shook her head and then looked down at the still sleeping Scootaloo who had curved up to a ball beside her She looked up at them and said. "I thought you wasn't supposed to be back until the day after tomorrow?" She had a confused look. Apple Jack answered."Well, we got a message from Princess Celestia about that Rainbow had gotten hurt. Apparently she had watched it all from her balcony up in Canterlot through a telescope." She smiled a little. Twilight merely nodded. She made a mental note to talk with the princess about spying on the private life.
She took a quick glance at the clock. It was showing 9 am.
Rarity then spoke."Darling, do you think you can tell us what it was that happened? We only know that Rainbow the poor dear was in some sort accident." Twilight looked at up Rarity and then the others. Tears started to form in her eyes when she thought back about what had happend they day before. She then look down at the floor. Tears now streaming down her chins. Fluttershy quitely said."You don't need to tell us Twilight, we understand if it hurts to think about." She went up to Twilight and laid a comforting wing over her back. Twilight fought back a sob and then said."No, you deserve to know, you are her friends after all."
She then looked up at them and wiped away the tears with her hoof. She took a deep breath and then said."Scootaloo and I were watching Rainbow practice her stunt flying out on the meadow." She fought hard to not start cry again."All went well until she was going into a high altitude dive." She could no longer hold back her tears and started to sob."She lost control of the dive and started to spin. She managed to pull out of the dive in the last second, but then she...she...". Twilight just fell down on the couch and cried.
Flutter gently stroke Twilights back with her wing and said."Sh, it's okay Twilight, it's okay. Everything will be fine." The others looked at Twilight with compassion written all over their faces. They walked up to her and gave her a big hug. She stopped crying after a little while and then looked at all of her friends, one at a time and then said."Thanks girls, i don't know what i should do without you." She managed to smiled a little. Pinkie Pie gave her a big smile and then said."Probably be a sad and boring Twily stuck up in Canterlot." Twilight giggled a little at that.
A small yawn was heard. Twilight looked down and saw that Scootalo was awake. She bent down and nuzzled her."Hey there Scootaloo, slept well?" Scootaloo only nodded. She looked around at the other mares. She saw Rarity and Apple Jack first though. "Rarity, Apple Jack. Have you seen Sweetie Belle or Applebloom?" Rarity shook her head. "I'm terribly sorry but she is staying at a relative in Hoffington at the moment. But Apple Jack nodded. "She should be at the farm right now, do you want me to go her for you?" Scootaloo nodded. Apple Jack smiled. "I guess i will get going then." She started to walk towards the door. Just before she left the room Twilight called."AJ, can you get us something to eat? We haven't eaten since lunch yesterday." Apple Jack looked back and smiled."Sure as sugar."
After around half an hour Apple Jack came back, with her she had Applebloom and tons of sandwiches. Applebloom ran straight up to Scootaloo and hugged her tightly. Scootaloo started to cry again while Applebloom did her best trying to comfort her. Meanwhile Applejack were dealing out the sandwiches to the others. One each, except for Twilight and Scootaloo who got three each. Twilight took her and Scootaloo's sandwiches in her magic and gently nuzzled Scootaloos mane. "Scootaloo, you need to eat." Scootaloo looked up and saw the sandwiches hanging in the air in front of her. She took it and devoured it immediatly. She looked around for more. The other ones just looked first and then laughed. Twilight shook her head and smiled. "Little sister to Rainbow Dash indeed." She took a bite of her own sandwich while she gently sat Scootaloo's two other sandwiches down in front of the little filly.
Just when Twilight and Scootaloo had finished their sandwiches a nurse came out to them. She looked at them and said."Rainbow Dash just woke up, you can visit her now. She is in room seven."
Before anyone could react Twilight had had teleported herself to room seven, Scootaloo was up running through the doors to the corridor almost as fast.
Twilight appeared with a magical flash and saw Rainbow laying in the bed, bandages all over her body. Rainbow saw the magical flash and then Twilight. She smiled and weakly said."Hey there Twi." Twilight ran up to her and gave her a hug. Rainbow flinched a little due to that the hug laid pressure on her wounds. Twilight noticed and quickly took a step back and looked down."Sorry.." Rainbow extended a hoof and slowly stroke her mane."It's okay Twilight. I've had worse." Just in that moment Scootaloo entered the room and screamed."Rainbow Dash!" She then ran up the side of the bed and jumped up on it and laid down beside her surrogate sister. Rainbow looked at the filly and smiled."Hi there squirt, how are you doing?" She gave her gentle nuzzle. Scootaloo smiled."Better now when i know you're okay sis." Rainbow chuckled and gave her mane a ruffle with her hoof."Good to hear little sis." The little filly made herself comfortable and pressed herself as close as possible to Rainbow without adding to much pressure on her wounds. Twilight smiled down at the filly.
Then the other enters the room. Rarity is the first one to speak."Rainbow darling, it's good to see that you are awake." Apple Jack joined in."Darn tooting it is." Applebloom nodded to agree with her sister. Pinkie ran up to her best friend and gave her a gentle hug. Rainbow returned the hug and nodded towards the others.
Rarity then asked."Rainbow dear, what was it that happened. Twilight here tried to explain what happened but she couldn't really handle to think about it. No offence Twilight." Twilight nodded and said."None taken." Rainbow sighed and then said."I went really high and then dove to do a Sonic Rainboom. But something went wrong, i just lost control. I couldn't control my descent. I managed to pull out just above the ground. But my wings were locked in place so i couldn't control were i was going, and then i crashed full speed into the apple orchard." She rubbed the back of her head awkwardly and said."Sorry about that Apple Jack, i hope i didn't do to much damage to the trees." She had a sheepish smile on her face. Apple Jack just shook her head and said."Them trees can be replaced Rainbow, can't say tha same about you. Ahm glad ya made it out alive." Rainbow nodded at what she said. She then looked at all her friends and smiled. She said."Thanks girls, for coming here. But no need to worry. I soon be out of there flying around like nothing happened."
Just in that moment the doctor entered the room and said."I hate to be the one coming with bad news Miss.Dash, but so will not be the case." Rainbow looked over to him with a puzzled look at her face."Do you mean that i need to be at the hospital for a long time?" The doctor looked at her with a sad look and then said."No, you can leave the hospital in a week or two, what i meant is that you will not be flying around like nothing happened." He took a deep breath."Actually, you will not be flying at all."
The room fell silent as the words of the doctor slowly fell in. Rainbow said with a little shaky voice."W-what do you mean with that I will not be flying at all?"
The doctor gave her a sad look and then levitated out an x-ray from inside his coat. He looked at it and then said."Well, when you got here your left wing was almost torn off. We managed to get it back in place so to say." He levitated over the x-ray to Rainbow who took it with shaking hooves. He then continued."But the bones and muscles at the base of your wing was beyond repair. You will not be able to move your left wing ever again." He gave her a sympathic look and then said."I'm sorry Ms.Dash, but you will never be able to fly again." Scootaloo just stared in shock at the doctor. She couldn't believe what she just had heard. This couldn't be true, how could it be? Rainbow Dash, the best flyer in Equestria, her bigger sister. Not be able to fly?
Rainbow just stared in disbelief at the x-ray photo. She silently said to herself."N-never be able to fly again?" She looked back at her bandaged wing. Then at the x-ray. A single tear made its way down her cheek as it started to dawn to her what it was the doctor just had said. More tears soon joined the first one. Twilight started to cry she too. She gave her marefriend a comforting hug. The other grown up mares in the room started to cry too. Scootaloo couldn't stand to see her bigger sister like this, so she jumped down from the bed and ran out of the room crying. Apple Jack spoke through her sobs."Girls, ah think it's best if we leave Twi and Dash alone." The others merely nodded in agreement and leaved the room to go to try and find Scootaloo. The doctor left last and gently closed the door.
Rainbow mumbled something under her breath. Twilight looked up at Rainbow and said."What was that?" She said a little louder, just so it was hearable."What will i do now?" She broke down into sobs. Twilight gave her a comforting nuzzle and whispered in her ear."We will figure something out Dashie." Rainbow cried at Twilight's shoulder while Twilight slowly stroke her mane.
After a couple of minutes Rainbow stopped to cry and looked up at Twilight with a concerned look on her face."But what about my job, i can't keep working on the weather team since i can't fly. How will it go for us? We can't afford to keep the library without that money." She broke down into sobs again. Twilight gently stroke her mane."Ssh, everything will be fine Rainbow. I can take a extra job as teacher at the school. I know Mrs.Cherilee have been searching for a new teacher in a while now." Rainbow just continued to cry. Twilight kept stroking her mane and started to hum on a lullaby. Rainbow soon fell asleep, mentally exhausted. Twilight just sat there, still hugging her.
She thought of what Rainbow had said and silently whispered to herself."Element of loyalty indeed." She smiled a little and then she too fell asleep.
It has now been three days since the accident, and during that time Twilight barely left Rainbow's side. Their other friends comes and visit as often they can, and the brought presents with them to try to cheer Rainbow up. Apple Jack brought apples and apple cider for both of them, the booze free since Rainbow still was on painkillers. Fluttershy made so her birds always sang for them in the morning and evening. Pinkie Pie brought them some sweets, and Rarity said that they would just need to ask, and if it stood in her might, she would help. Many of there other friends in Ponyville also visited. But none of them managed to bring Rainbow out of the shell of sadness, shock and disbelief she had built around herself.
Twilight started to get really worried about Rainbow and asked a nurse if there was anything she could do. The nurse answered that only the pony that meant most of all to Rainbow could bring her out of it. That she needed to be shown that she still had a purpose here in life. Cause right now she was thinking that since she couldn't fly she didn't serve any purpose anymore. Twilight thought about who that pony could be. It hurt a little when she admitted that it clearly wasn't her. She could dismiss Rainbow's parents. Rainbow had told her that her parent's had tossed her out when she was just a little filly. That only left one pony, or filly to be more accurate, Scootaloo. But there had been no sign of her at all since she ran out of the hospital room two days ago. Neither of the others had seen her. Twilight even asked Applebloom and Sweetie Belle when they visited but they hadn't seen her since before the accident. Twilight was starting to worry for both Scootaloo and Rainbow. Since Scootaloo ran out from the room Rainbow hadn't really been the same.
Twilight looked up from the book she had been reading and saw the all to familiar sight. Rainbow sitting on the edge of the bed looking out through the window. She seemed to be totally lost in her own thoughts. The unicorn looked out through the window and out on the sky. She sighed and wondered why Rainbow kept bringing herself pain and heartache with thinking about the sky and flying all the time. She put a bookmark in the book and put it aside on a desk. She rose from her chair and walked up to Rainbow and nudged her on the shoulder with a hoof. The cyan mare turned her head towards Twilight. Twilight gave a little smile and said."I'll go out and look for Scootaloo, alright?" She gave her a gentle nuzzle. Rainbow seemed to flinch a little when she heard the filly's name. But then nodded slowly. She then returned her gaze towards the window. Twilight smile faded and she shook her head. She levitated a blanket and wrapped it gently around Rainbow. She turned and walked out from the room.
Twilight had been looking through Ponyville for hours now. She even asked most of the ponies in town if they knew were Scootaloo lived. But none of them knew. Heck, not even Pinkie Pie knew, and she knows all ponies in Ponyville.
She started to think about what she actually knew about Scootaloo's real family, and realised she never met any of them, or that Scootaloo ever mentioned her parents by name. She decided to go and talk to Sweetie Belle and Applebloom. They were Scootaloo's best friends after all.
She found them on Sweet Apple Acres, trying to get their cutie marks in what it looked like, drawing. Twilight walked up to them and said."Hi girls, i need your help." She smiled a little. Applebloom and Sweetie Belle looked up at her from their drawings. Applebloom was the first one to speak."Sure thing Twilight. Whatcha need arh help with?" Twilight gave the little filly a smile and said."Well, i've been trying to find Scootaloo all day. But i can't find her. Do you know where she is, or where she lives?" Sweetie Belle was the first to answer."No, i don't know where Scootaloo is, or where she lives when i think about it." She got a worried look at her face."She isn't in trouble is she?" Twilight shook her head."No, she isn't." She gave them a reassuring smile. After some thinking Applebloom spoke."Ah don't know where Scoots is either, or were she lives. Ahm sorry Twilight." Twilight smiled and said."It's okay girls, thank you for your help." The two fillies nodded and then went back to their drawings. She left the farm a little crestfallen and started to make her way back to the town.
But on her way back Twilight noticed something in a tree a bit away from the road. She looked up to get a better wiew at it, and saw the Cutie Mark Crusaders club house, and she could see something move in there through the window. She said to herself as she started to walk towards the tree house."It's always worth a shot."
She stopped just beneath the ramp that led up to the tree house and listened. Yes, there was defiantly someone up there, and it sounded like that someone was crying. She carefully walked up the ramp and then up to the door. She then slowly opened the door with her magic. What she saw wasn't really what she had expected. In a corner she saw Scootaloo wrapped up in a blanket and crying. Twilight slowly walked up to her and said."Scootaloo, are you ok?" She had a worried tone in her voice.
Scootaloo jumped a little of the sudden sound of a voice. She looked back and saw that it was Twilight. She darted out from underneath her blanket and threw herself around Twilight's neck and just continued to cry. Twilight went down on her knees and slowly stroke her mane, which was even messier then usual. She gave her a gentle nuzzle on her chin and said."Ssh, it's alright Scootaloo, it's alright." Scootaloo said through her sobs."No, *sob* it isn't. H-how can it be alright. *sob* When Rainbow Dash will never *sob* never fly again?" She looked at Twilight with tears streaming down her face. Twilight gently stroke them away with her hoof and then said."Accidents happens Scootaloo. But you know, when you ran out from the room like that, and when nopony said they had seen you since then. Both me and Rainbow got really worried." Scootaloo stopped to cry and looked up at her with surprise in her eyes as she took a step back."Did you? You were worried about me?" Twilight smiled and gave her a nuzzle."Well of course Scootaloo, why wouldn't we be worried about you?"
Scootaloo looked down at her hooves and didn't say anything at first, but after a while."It's just that nopony has ever cared about me like that except my...my parents." Tears started to track it's way down on her cheeks. She had her gaze locked at her hooves when she talked again."And *sob* they haven't really been able to care for me lately.*sob* Twilight got a confused look at her face."Why not?" Scootaloo looked up at Twilight with tears flowing from her eyes.*sob*"Because *sob* Because t-they died in a fire three years ago in Trottingham." She collapsed on the floor and just cried. Twilight looked at the little filly with shock and then with compassion. She wanted to know more about the fire but something told her that Scootaloo couldn't handle to talk about it right now. So she made a mental note to talk with Dash about this.
Twilight walks over to her and lays down beside her."Ssh now Scootaloo. It's gonna be okay. Everything is gonna be fine." She gently nuzzled her cheek and gave her a reassuring smile when she looked up at her. Scootaloo looked at her with hopeful eyes and said with a low voice."Will it? Will everything really be alright?" Twilight smiled and nodded."Yes, i promise you. Everything will be just fine." She brought the little filly into a hug.
She then looked out through the window."Well, how about we go to the library and get you fixed up and let you eat something. And then head for the hospital to visit Rainbow?" Scootaloo wiped away some tears with one of her front hooves and nodded."That sounds good." A small rumbling sound could be heard."Especially the food part." She blushed a little. Twilight chuckled and stood up."Then come on, it's almost evening. We better get going." She then turned to the door and walked out of the treehouse. Scootaloo quickly stood up and followed her.
While they walked on the on the road back to town Scootaloo said."Twilight." Twilight turned her head towards Scootaloo and said."Yes Scootaloo?" The little filly looked at her with pleading eyes."Please don't tell Rainbow Dash that I cried." Twilight looked at her with confusion."Why not?" She looked away."I don't want her to think that I'm weak." Twilight just shook her head."Scootaloo, you aren't weak. I would say that you are the strongest little filly I've ever met." She looked up at Twilight with surpise written all across her face."Do you really mean that?" She looked at Twilight with big eyes. Twilight nodded and smiled. She was then tackled by the little filly that gave her a big hug while saying."Oh, thank you so much Twilight!" Twilight laughed and then said."You're welcome Scootaloo, but what about we get to the library now?" Scootaloo nodded and then they continued to walk.
It was to late to go to the hospital when they got back to Ponyville. So Twilight brought Scootaloo back to the library, and the filly fell asleep almost immediately when they arrived. Twilight brought her up to her bedroom, laid her down on the bed, and lay down beside her. She looked at the little filly and smiled. She gave her a gentle nuzzle and said."Good night Scootaloo."
The next morning came and Twilight was putting some books that recently been returned to the library back into the shelves while Scootaloo was eating a big portion of oatmeal as breakfast. The little filly looked up from the bowl when she was finished and asked."Can i have some more?"
Twilight chuckled and shook her head in amusement."This will be your third bowl Scootaloo. How long has it been since you ate something?" She gave the filly a curious look. Scootaloo looked a little uncomfortable and said."Eh, the sandwich while we waited on the hospital." She gave the unicorn a sheepish smile. Twilight gave her a shocked expression and the grabbed the bowl with her magic. She walked out into the kitchen and poured some more oatmeal into it and and walked out with it to the little filly. She smiled and said."Well, then it's best you eat then." She put down the bowl at the table in front of Scootaloo.
She went back to shelving the books. But just as she had gotten started again she heard a knocking on the door. She looked up at the door and said. "Huh, who could that be, i'm not expecting anypony and everypony knows that you can walk in into the library without knocking." She went to open it while the little filly ate her food. She opened the door and on the front porch stood Ditzy Doo, the local mail mare. She smiled and her right eye wandered off on it's own as usual. "Hello Twilight, i've got some mail for you." She reached back to her saddle bags and grabbed a couple of letters. Twilight smiled and took them in her magic."Thank you Ditzy." She levitated out a couple of bits and gave to the grey pegasus. Ditzy took them and placed them in her saddle bags.
She was just about to fly away when she remembered one thing. She turned to Twilight and said."Twilight, how is Rainbow doing?" Her eyes focused for a little while and she had a concerned look at her face. Twilight's smiled faded and she looked down at the ground."Well, her wounds are healing, but she is sad and depressed over the fact that she will not be able too fly anymore." Ditzy gave her a hug and then took a step back."Ok, can you say hi to her from me? And say that i'm sorry i haven't been able to visit yet. I will probably come by tomorrow with Dinky." She gave her a little smile. Twilight looked up at the pegasus and smile a little."Yeah, i will do that. I think that Rainbow will be happy too see both you and Dinky." Ditzy nodded and said."I need to go, still got some mail to be delivered." Twilight nodded and gave her a hug. She then watched as the gray pegasus flew away.
When she got back in she looked on the letters and saw that two of the letters were Rainbow's while the third was for herself. She opened up the letter and read.
Hi there Twiley. I heard about the accident. I don't know how bad it is. But i want you to know that if there is anything that I can do, I gladly will. Your sister-in-law Cadence PS: Spike is on his way back home, he jumped on the train the moment he heard about the accident. He should be in Ponyville around 5pm on Thursday.
She looked at the letter and then read it over again. She sighed and levitated it over to the desk. Scootaloo who had been looking at her while she read the letter noticed the change in the unicorns mood. She asked."What did the letter say?" She tilted her head a little. Twilight looked at the little filly and smiled."Oh, just said that Spike is coming home tomorrow. And i can't really say that the library is any good shape right now." She chuckled a little to try to take the little filly's thoughts away from the bad things that recently had happened.
Inwardly she was a mix of feelings. She didn't really want Spike to see how heartbroken Rainbow was right now. But on the other hoof Spike deserved to see Rainbow, she was one of his closest friend after all, and since she had started to date her. Rainbow had become like another bigger sister for him.
She went to put the last books back into the shelves and then turned towards Scootaloo who just had finished her bowl of oatmeal."Alright, now let's see if we can do anything about that mane of yours." Scootaloo jumped up and walked to a mirror. She looked at her reflection."It doesn't look that bad." Twilight chuckled and said."If you just wait here i will be back soon." She walked upstairs and left the little filly alone in the library.
Scootaloo looked around the big room and saw a row of books that looked familiar. She walked up to them and slowly took out the first one. She sat down at her haunches and stared at the book in her front hooves. She didn't notice that Twilight came down and walked up to her. She jumped a little when Twilight poked her on the shoulder. She dropped the book. The unicorn gave a soft chuckle."Didn't mean to scare you Scootaloo." Twilight saw the book laying on the floor and picked it up, she read on the cover, Daring Doo and the Sapphire Stone."I didn't know you liked the Daring Doo serie." Scootaloo looked down at the floor."My father used to read it for me.." A single tear fell from her eyes down at the floor. Twilight gave the little filly a hug."Oh, Scootaloo, i didn't know. I'm sorry." She nuzzled her cheek. The filly hugged her tightly around the neck while she cried. Twilight just sat there letting the filly hug her while slowly stroking her mane. She suddenly remembered something. A song her mother used to sing for her when she was a little filly and was sad. She looked at Scootaloo and started to sing.
After she had finished the song Twilight said."How about we get your mane combed and then go to the hospital?" Scootaloo just nodded and sat down so Twilight could comb her mane. The unicorn levitated the comb she had brought from her room and started to slowly comb out the filly's mane.
She levitated away the comb and put it down on a desk, and levitated over a mirror she put in front of Scootaloo. She gave the little filly a smile and said."There we go. That's much better." Scootaloo looked at her reflection and said."I guess it is." She gave her a weak smile. Twilight gave her a gentle nuzzle and levitated the mirror over to the desk."Then let's go to the hospital. Don't want to keep Rainbow waiting." Scootaloo nodded and together they walked out of the library and towards the hospital.
It was early on the afternoon when Scootaloo and Twilight entered the hospital. Twilight went up to the reception and said. “We are here to visit Rainbow Dash.” The nurse looked at the papers she had on the desk and shook her head. “That is not possible right now.” She looked up. Twilight looked at her in confusion. “What do you mean not possible?” Her voice started to get a worried tone. “Has something happened?” The nurse looked at her and said. “I’m not allowed to tell that to anyone except her closest family.” She gave her an sad smile. “But if you sit down and wait I will go and ask the doctor when you can visit her.”
Twilight merely nodded and turned towards Scootaloo who had been standing a couple of meters away. She gave her a sheepish smile. “It looks like we have to wait a little before we can visit Rainbow.” She walked over to the filly and gently nudge her towards the sofa. Scootaloo merely nodded and went over to the sofa. She jumped up on it and Twilight laid down beside her. She nuzzled herself into Twilight's mane. She whispered. “Twilight?” Twilight turned her head towards the little filly and said.” Yes Scootaloo?” The filly looked up through her mane with tears in her eyes and said. “Rainbow Dash has gotten worse, hasn’t she?” Twilight nuzzled Scootaloo. “Her wounds are healing nicely, there is nothing to worry about there.” Scootaloo looked into Twilight’s eyes and said. “Are you sure?” A tear slowly tracked its way down her cheek. Twilight levitated a napkin out of her saddlebags and gently wiped it away. “Yes Scootaloo, I’m sure.”
They waited a couple of minutes before a doctor entered the waiting room. He looked around and saw them. He looked relieved to see Twilight. He said. “Mrs. Sparkle. Can you please come with me? I need to speak to you.” Twilight nodded and stepped of the sofa carefully so she didn’t push down Scootaloo from it and then walked up to the doctor followed by the filly. The doctor looked at the filly and said. “Alone please, what I’m going to tell you is only allowed to be told to Rainbow Dash’s family.” Twilight tilted her head and said. “Well, I think we both count as her family Mr. I’m her marefriend and Scootaloo here is her little sister.” The doctor looked at Scootaloo and said. “I apologize, I didn’t know that she had a little sister.” He smiled a little. The filly just nodded.
He then turned towards Twilight and said. “Rainbow hasn’t talked or moved since you left yesterday. I think she is entering a depression.” He had a sad look. Twilight nodded slowly. “Yes, I was suspecting that to, she had barely talked anything at all the last days.” She had a sad look. Scootaloo looked at first the doctor and then Twilight with a confused look. “What is a depression?” The doctor turned his head towards the filly and started to say. “Well, a depression is…” But he was interrupted by Twilight. “A depression is a mental state when you are really sad and depressed over something. You are so depressed that you don’t care about anything at all. Not yourself, not anypony.” The filly ran up to Twilight and hugged her tightly and cried out into her mane. Twilight hugged her back and slowly stroke her mane.
The doctor cleared his throat to get their attention. Twilight turned her head towards him with teary eyes. He said. "You can go and visit her if you want, room seven." Twilight nodded and started to lead Scootaloo there after wiping both her own and the filly's tears away with a napkin.
They slowly opened the door and saw Rainbow Dash sitting on the bed looking out through the window. Twilight went up to her and said. "Rainbow, i'm back." The cyan pegasi didn't show a sign of even noticing her. Twilight gave her a gentle nuzzle and said. "I brought Scootaloo with me honey." Rainbow slowly turned her head when she heard the filly's name. Twilight were shocked to see the totally expressionless eyes of her marefriend. Scootaloo walked up to the side of Twilight and said with a trembling voice. "R-rainbow Dash?" Rainbow turned her head towards the filly and looked at her and then turned towards the window again. Scootaloo walked up in front of her. She looked up at her idol with big teary eyes. "Sis? It's me, Scootaloo, your little sister." Rainbow just looked at her with a expressionless face. She then continued to look out through the window. Scootaloo just stared in disbelief on her. Tears starts to flow down her cheeks. "She..she don't recognize me..."
Scootaloo just stared at Rainbow in disbelief and shock. She whispered. "She don't recognize...." Tears flowed down her cheeks. Twilight brought her into a tight hug while she nuzzled her mane. "Ssh now, it will be fine." The filly cried into the Twilight's mane while hugging her neck tightly. Twilight gently stroke her mane while whispering. "Ssh, it will be okay Scootaloo, I promise."
After a couple of minutes Scootaloo stopped crying and fell silent. She looked up at Twilight with big eyes. "What will happen now?" Twilight nuzzled her and smiled. "Well, i guess you will be living with me and Rainbow for now on." Scootaloo smiled but then looked at Rainbow and her smile faded. Twilight gave her a hug. "Don't you worry Scootaloo. Rainbow will soon be fine. She just needs some time to handle all this."
The filly nodded and then looked at her. "Twilight, can we eat lunch? I'm hungry." Twilight chuckled a little and nodded. "Yes Scootaloo, we can eat lunch." Scootaloo jumped and walked over to the door. She looked back and saw that Twilight still sat down. "Are you coming?" She tilted her head a little. Twilight looked up and smiled. "You can go ahead a little. I will be with you in a minute." The filly nods and then walks out of the room.
Twilight looks at Rainbow once again. She slowly walks up in front of her and stares her in the eyes. She takes a deep breath. "Rainbow, i know that you can hear me, and i know that you are very sad over your loss of flight." She takes another deep breath. "But right now there is someone who needs you. Someone who needs your loyalty to her. The loyalty only a sister can show."
Scootaloo's voice can be heard from the corridor. "Twilight, are you coming?" Twilight turns her attention from Rainbow to the door. "Soon Scootaloo." She turns back towards Rainbow. "Just keep that in mind." She then walks out from the room.
It has been over three weeks since the accident and Rainbow had been checked out from the hospital. Mainly cause neither Twilight or Rainbow could've afforded the hospital bill if she had stayed any longer.
The outer door at the tree house opens and a orange pegasi filly walks in. She looks around the main room and notice it's empty. "Twilight, are you home?" A voice is heard from the kitchen. "I'm in the kitchen Scootaloo." Scootaloo walks out in the kitchen and see's the lavender unicorn standing there preparing some food. Twilight smiles when she see's the little filly. She hugs her and asks. "So, how was school today?" The filly returns the hug. "Well, could have been better if Diamond Tiara hadn't been bugging me all the time." She frowns a little. Twilight looks at her. "Just ignore what she says Scootaloo. That she's bullying other ponies will come back and bite her in the flank on day." She smiles at the filly. The filly smiles back at her. She then turns towards the oven. "What's for dinner today?" The mare shakes her head. "Foals, always thinking of food." She chuckles a little. Scootaloo frowns a little. "Hey, i don't always think of food! I think of how to get my cutie mark too!" Twilight chuckles and nuzzles her mane. "I know. And it's apple pie with cream for dinner today. Just waiting for Spike to come back home from the shop with the final ingredients." The filly smiles and jumps up. "Awesome! I love that! I will just go up to my room and drop of my bag." Twilight gives her a stern look. "And do your homework to i suppose?" Scootaloo sighs. "Do i have to?" The mare nods. "That, or no dinner." The filly sighs. "Fine." She then walks up to her room.
On her way she see's that the door into Twilight's and Rainbow's bedroom is slightly opened. She decides to take an peek since she hasn't been in there that many times. She see's Rainbow Dash sitting at the window staring out on the sky. She carefully walks up to her and sits down besides her. She looks up at her. "Hi there sis." Rainbow doesn't even seem to notice her. She just keeps staring out on the sky. The little filly sighs. "You aren't the only one who wishes to be able to fly sis." She then stands up and walk over to the door. She turns her head and looks a Rainbow. "Just so you know." She walks out of the room and to her own bedroom.
When she enters the room she throws her bag bag in a corner and throw herself onto her bed. She buries her head in the pillow and starts to cry.
After a minute or so the door slowly opens. The filly doesn't hear it over her own crying. "Squirt?" Scotaloo's ears points straight up when she recognize the voice. She slowly tuns her head around and looks at the pony standing in the doorway. "R-rainbow?"
The cyan pegasus walks up to the bed and lays down beside the crying filly. She drapes one of her wings around her and nuzzled her head. "It's okay scoots. Everything will be alright"
Twilight peeked out from the kitchen when she heard voices from upstairs. From what she heard Spike hadn't come home yet. And it sounded like two female voices. One was easily recognized as Scootaloo. But she couldn't really hear who the other voice was. She cried up towards the stair. "Scootaloo, who are you talking to?" The voices died down and soon a response came. "Come and see for yourself Twi!" A really familiar voice cried back. A voice that to Twilight sounded like heavenly music played by angels. She rushed out of the kitchen and up the stairs. But she trips on the last step. She screamed and started to fall. But there was no impact with the hard wooden floor. Instead something had catched her midair. She looked up and looked into a pair of magenta eyes. Her eyes teared up. "Rainbow?" A tear rolled down her cheek. The cyan pegasi nodded. "The one and only." She gave her marefriend a beaming smile. Twilight threw herself around Rainbow's neck in a big hug and began to cry. "And i thought she would be happy that you woke up Rainbow." Scootaloo said from behind the cyan pegasi. Both of the grown up mares started to chuckle. Scootaloo looked at them in confusion. "What's funny?" Twilight looked at the filly with a smile on her face. "I'm happy honey. I'm so happy that i cry. You don't cry only when you're sad. You can cry when you are really really happy or releaved over something." She walked up to the filly and brought her into a hug. Seconds later Rainbow joined into the hug. Suddenly they heard the voice of the outer door being opened and Spike called out. "I'm back!" Twilight cried back. "We're upstairs Spike. Put the grocieries in the kitchen and come up!" "Alright Twilight!" Were the response from him. They heard him go out to the kitchen and the sound of him putting the groceries where they should be. Then he walked up to the stair and looked upward it. He saw Twilight and Scootaloo standing up there with beaming smiles on their faces. Spike got a little wary. "Girls, what are you up to?" He continued to walk up the stair but slowed down. Twilight smirked. "Us two? Nothing." Scootaloo's smile just got wider. "It's not them you should be worried about little guy." A voice sounded from behind them. Spike's eyes widened when he recognized the voice. "Rainbow Dash?" He reached the top of the stairs. Twilight took a step aside so he could see Rainbow. Rainbow gave him a confident smirk. "That's my name, don't wear it out." His eyes teared up and he threw himself around her neck in a tight hug. "I was starting to think that you were never to snap out of it." Rainbow padded his back softly. "Well, i might not had snapped out of it unless it were for Scoots." All turned their gazes to the little filly who looked really confused. "Me, what did i do?" Rainbow slowly put down Spike on the ground and went over to Scootaloo and nuzzled her. "You reminded me of that my life still has a meaning. That i still have to take care of you, twi and spike. Godness knows what would happened to you three if i just disappeared." She gave them a soft smile. Scootaloo didn't answer and just hugged her adoptive sister tight. Twilight just shock her head before she joined in the hug. Spike wasn't late to join the hug either.
Rainbow nuzzled the sleeping Scootaloo and puts the blanket up to her neck. "Goodnight little sis. Tomorrow is gonna be a big day for all of us." She walked to the door as quitly she could and turned of the light. She then walked out of the room and left the door slightly creeked open.
She walked to her and her marefriend's room. When she opened the door she saw Twilight laying in the bed reading a book. The lavender unicorn looked up when she heard the door opens. "So she's asleep now?" Rainbow nodded. Twilight smiled and beckoned for Rainbow to come and lay down beside her. The cyan pegasus did just that.
Twilight looked at the cyan pegasus. "Are you sure you want to do this? I mean there is a big responsibility" She was cut of by Rainbow putting a hoof on her mouth. "I know Twi, and i do want this. The question is, do you? It's you who has been asking me that question for days now." Twilight looked at Rainbow and blinked. "It's just that i really hope we can afford it. It will be tough, But i think we can manage." Rainbow smiled and then nodded. "Time to get some sleep my love. Big day ahead." The lavender mare smiles and levitated her book to the nightstand and turned off the light. "Indeed, sleep well Rainbow." The only response that came were a light snore. She chuckled and then cuddled closer to her marefriend. She let out a happy sigh and then she to fell asleep.
Scootaloo let out a low groan when the sun hitted her eyes. She slowly opened them and looked around in her room. Nothing out of the ordinary except a pile of presents on the usually empty table. Her eyes widened when she saw the sheer amount of presents. She threw thew the blanket aside and darted to the desk, jumping up on the chair to reach up to the presents. Just as she was about to open the first one Rainbow entered the room. "Not until the evening Scoots." The filly looked at her bigger sister with large pleading eyes. Rainbow tried her best to resist, but couldn't stand the amount of cuteness her little sister displayed. "Alright, you can open one now. But the rest has to wait for the evening." She gave her a stern look. The little filly nodded and looked carefully at all presents.
She rubbed her chin while she thought of which one to open first. Rainbow went up the desk and picked up one. "Here, take this one." Scootaloo watched at the present and read the text written on the wrapping paper. "To the most awesome filly i know". Her eyes teared up and she hug Rainbow. "Thank you sis". Rainbow hugged her back and chuckled. "Come on now sis, open the present". Scootaloo started to unwrap it. Inside was a poster. It was a specialmade poster that Rainbow had gotten when she was at the Wonderbolt Academy. She managed to convince Spitfire to take a picture of her and the rest of the Wonderbolts flying in formation with Rainbow by her side. It was signed by all of the Wonderbolts too. In the right down corner it stood. "To Scootaloo, hope we meet someday. You got a awesome sister btw." The filly's eyes teared up once again and she threw herself around her sisters neck. "Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!". Rainbow just laughed and hugged her. "Your welcome little sis. I got that one almost half a year ago. Just waited until your birthday to arrive to give it to you. So, happy birthday."
Twilight's voice were heard from downstairs. "Come on you two if you want any breakfast. Unless you want Spike to eat your portions up!". The quickly made there way downstairs and into the kitchen were Twilight were making pancakes. Spike sat at the table and were munching on some pancakes with jewels in them. Twilight smiled at Scootaloo. "Morning Scootaloo. Happy birthday". Spike looked up and saw them. "Yeah, happy birthday Scootaloo". Rainbow and Scootaloo sat down at the table while Twilight levitated two plates with pancakes to them. While they started to eat Twilight went to the kitchen door. "I will go upstairs and pack the last things." Scootaloo looked up in surpise. "Are you going somewhere?". Twilight smiled. "Not me, us. We are going up to Canterlot this weekend to my visit my parents. And we also has a little surprise for you up there." Scootaloo tilted her head. Rainbow chuckled and shook her head. "No idea to ask squirt. You will not get Twilight to tell you anything if she wants to keep it a secret." She gave her marefriend a smile. Scootaloo just frowned and continued to eat. Twilight smiled back and then went up to pack the last things down for their trip.
Twilight levitated the bags out through the door. "Are you sure you don't want to come with us Spike?". She looked back at the dragon standing in the door. He nodded. "Yeah, i'm sure. Someone gotta make sure the library is open. You know we get less money if we have a couple of days closed, and we need every bit we can get." Twilight hugged him. "Oh, when did you grow up?". Spike chuckled. "When you wasn't looking sis. Now get going so you don't miss the train. Say hello to our parents from me and say i'm sorry i couldn't make it this time." Twilight nodded. "I will, take care now Spike". He nodded and closed the door. Twilight, Rainbow and Scootaloo made their way to the trainstation were they just managed to catch their train. With a whizzle from the engines the train started to move just at they sat down at their seats. Scootaloo looked out through the window on the countryside that passed by while Rainbow and Twilight were chatting. "It will go fine Rainbow." The cyan pegasi twisted a little were she sat. "But i've never met your parents before Twi. What if they don't like me?". Twiligh hugged her. "It will go just fine, you will see that they like you." Rainbow only nodded. Soon both Rainbow and Twilight fell asleep while Scootaloo just continued to watch in awe as the countryside flew by outside the window.
Twilight woke from being shaken by Scootaloo. "Twilight, Twilight, wake up! We're here!" Twilight looked out and saw the great city of Canterlot approach in the distance. She smiled. "Yes sweetie. We are here." She gently shook Rainbow's shoulder to wake her up. Rainbow opened her eyes and looked around. "Huh, are we there already?" Twilight gave her a quick kiss. "In a couple of minutes".
The train came to a stop and they went of the train. On the platform they were greated by two ponies that Twilight ran up to and hugged. "Mom, dad!". They hugged her back. The stallion looked up Rainbow and Scootaloo who were hiding behind her. "So, this is Rainbow?" Twilight nodded and went up her marefriend. "Rainbow, i want you to meet my parents. My mother, Twilight Velvet." A white unicorn mare with a bright purple mane with white stripes. "A pleasure to meet you my dear, i heard a lot about you from Twilight through her letters". She reached out a hoof. Rainbow reached out her own hoof and shook it. "The pleasure is mine, nothing to bad i hope?". Both of the chuckled.
Twilight cleared her throat to get Rainbow's attetion. The pegasi looked at her. "And here we have my father, Nightlight." The pale blue unicorn stallion with the dark blue mane stepped forward and reached out his hoof. "I pleasure to finally meet you in person young lady". Rainbow blushed a little at being called a lady. She shook his hoof. "Please sir, just call me Rainbow".
He nodded and then looked behind her. "Who do we have here?". Scootaloo squelad and hid herself in Rainbow's tail. Rainbow chuckled. "It's alright Scoots, they will not hurt you." Scootaloo slowly walked up her side and tried to make herself as small as possible. "This is my little sister, Scootaloo". Twilight Velvet walked up and kneelt down in front of her. "Hello there Scootaloo, i'm Twilight Velvet. Do you want some candy?" Scootaloo nodded. She levitated a candy bar out from her saddlebag and gave it to the little filly. "Thank you mam". Twilight Velvet chuckled. "A well mannered foal is rare these days."
Rainbow smiled. "Well, how has your birthday been this far Scoots?". The filly looked up at her sister with a smile while she munched on her candybar. "It's been awesome!". Nightlift gave a gasp. "It's your birthday? Oh, and i don't a present for you. Twily, you could have told us it was her birthday. Now i need to run and buy a present". Before anyone could respond he had teleported away. Both Twilight and her mother chuckled. "Same old dad as usual. Always gonna buy a present when somepony has their birthday." Her mother just shook her head. "He hasn't changed a bit on that point since i met him. But enough chit chat for the moment. Let's get your bags home. You mentioned you had something important to do at the palace in your last letter?". Twilight looked at Rainbow and blinked. Rainbow smiled. "Yeah, it's a little surprise we arranged for Scoots here". Scootaloo looked up at Rainbow then at Twilight. Twilight Velvet chuckled. "Then let's get going, it's quite the walk home, don't you think Twilight?". The lavender mare nodded and levitated the bags after them.
After they had arrived to Twilights parents home and dropped of their bags, they said good bye to Twilight Velvet for the moment who started to prepare for dinner. They went through the town towards the palace. All the time Scootaloo asked what surprise they had planned. Rainbow chuckled. "You will have to wait squirt". Scootaloo frowned and went quite.
Soon they arrived at the front gate of the palace. Scootaloo looked in awe at the great royal palace of Canterlot that towered before them. Above the gate the insignia of the sun and moon was embedded in the stone. The sunpart made of glistering gold while the moon side were made of dulled silver.
They approached the guards that blocked the gate. As they approchead them they crossed their spears to block their way. One of the guards looked at them. "What's your buisness in the palace my ladies?". A voice was heard from behind them. "At ease soldiers. They are green." The soldiers straighted out their spears and stood in salute. "Ay captain!".
Twilight looked up and saw the new captain of The Solar Guard. "Hi there Sunflare, been a while since last time". The white unicorn stallion with a golden mane went up to them. He was a couple of inches taller then Twilight. "Indeed it has. What brings you to the capital Twilight?". Twilight looked back at Rainbow and Scootaloo then back at him. "Some buisness i need to speak with the Princess about. He nodded. "Then i will escort you there." Twilight blushed. "You don't have to, you must have other duties to attend to". He smiled. "Actually no, i just finished of some paperworks and got a hour free until next training session." Twilight sighed. "If you insist, lead the way". He nodded and started to walk.
Rainbow went up to Twilight and whispered in her ear. "I don't like that guy". Twiligt chuckled and whispered back. "I have known that he loves me a couple of years now Rainbow, but no worries. He don't have a chance on me. You already got me." She gave her marefriend a quick kiss. Rainbow smiled.
After walking for what seemed like an hour to Scootaloo through the labyrinth of corrdiors the palacs was they arrived a the door to the throne room. Sunflare opened the door and walked in. "Twilight Sparkle with companions". He declared in a high voice and then gestured for them to come in. When Twilight walked past him she whispered. "Thank you".
They walked up to the throne where Princess Celestia sat. The princess smiled as she saw her student. "Ah, my faithful student, how wonderful to see you again". Twilight bowed and smiled. "It's nice o see you again princess. But i'm afraid that we are not here for just paying a visit. We got a pressing matter that we need you help with". The solar princess tilted her head a little. "And what might that be if i may ask?". Twilight turned towards Scootaloo and smiled. "We want you to arrange for me and Rainbow to adopt this little filly here."
Rainbow looked around the burning city of Manehattan, pillars of smoke rising up towards the sky, painted red by the fire beneath. It were dead ponies and gryphons everywhere she turned. She kept on flying in hope to find any survivors of her squad. Her squad....
They had been sent to the eastern part of the city to reinforce their defence line. But they had arrived to late. The gryphons had already broken through. When they got there the were ambushed. She managed to escape, but with a wounded shoulder and she didn't know if any of her squadmates made it out alive. She looked around desperatly for any surving ponies. She wasn't sure she couldn't make it out of here on her own. With her wound she wasn't in any capable shape to fight.
A shriek was heard from above her, she looked up and saw a gryphon dive towards her, talons gleaming in the little sunlight that the smoke let through. She made a dive to the left in hope of avoiding it and escape through speed. She swept through the streets, making sharp turns. She glanced back and saw the gryphon closing in. She muttered a curse about her wounded shoulder slowing her down.
Suddenly a pegasi swept down and kicked the gryphon in the neck, making it fall and crash into the ground. Rainbow stopped and looked at the pegasi with tears in her eyes. "Cloud Kicker, your alive! I thought you went down with the others of the fifth platoon" The grey pegasi mare swept here blonde mane aside and looked sadly at her. "I was sent of to call for reinforcments just before we were attacked, i'm the only survivor." Rainbow flew up and hugged the mare who started to cry into her shoulder. "Snowflake, Thunderlane, Cloudchaser, they.... They're all gone...." Rainbow patted her shoulder and whispered. "It's okay CK, it's okay. We'll have time to grieve for them later, right now we need to get out of here and try to find the commandpost." Cloud Kicker looked up and and swept away her tears with a forhoof. "Ay, you're right capti" She were cut of by an arrow striking her stright in the head, she fell motionless towards the ground. "Cloud Kicker!"
Rainbow woke up screaming her name. Twilight were already awake and gently hugged her. "That dream again?" Rainbow nodded while she sobbed into her marefriends shoulder. "It's not fair, it's not fair." The lavander unicorn she hugged her tighter and whispered. "It's okay dash, it's okay." After a little while the cyan pegasi fell asleep once again. Twilight stayed awake slowly stroking her mane and quitly singing her a lullaby.
It's two days since the came up with the arrangement for the adoption of Scootaloo. Since it's Hearts Warming Eve they decided to wait a week until the signed the papers and make it formal, so they could enjoy the holiday together without any paperworks and bureaucracy to care about.
Twilight and Rainbow laid on a cushion together with Scootaloo in front of the fireplace. They were at Twilight's parents house in the eastern parts of Canderlot. Rainbow looked around in awe. "I know that you've told me your parents had a big house Twi, but seriously. An entire mansion?" Twilight chuckled. "It's been in the family's possession in around 400 years now."
Nightlight entered trough a door and brought some plates with food on them wrapped in his magic. He gently putted them down on the low table in front of them and then went over to the sofa. "And it will be in your possession soon Twilight." Twilight sighed. "Not in a long time I hope." Nightlight chuckled. "We actually planned to give it to you after the winter's over." Twilight jerked her head up and stared at her father with suprise. "But what about you and mom?" She had a worried look. Twilight Velvet enetered the room and sat down in the sofa beside her husband. "We've been offered to live in the palace, by Princess Celestia herself." Twilight just nodded, clearly suprised.
Scootaloo just lay there, enjoying just being with her soon to be parents and grandparents. She couldn't believe her luck, she had a family again. After years of living alone. She cuddled closer to Twilight and smiled.
Twilight Velvet smiled and looked at the little filly. "I was hoping for grand children soon." Twilight blushed a little while Rainbow tried to hide behind her mane. Nightlight chuckled and smiled. "And it was a really adorable little granddaughter we got." Scootaloo blushed and tried to hide herself beneath one of Rainbow's wings.
"So Twilight." Nightlight asked. Twilight looked at her father. "Yes father?" He looked at her and Rainbow. "When are you two gonna get married?" Twilight looked at Rainbow who had a glint of panic in the corner of her eyes. "I don't know actually, we haven't really thought about it. And I'm not so sure we can afford a wedding at the moment." Rainbow smiled at her marefriend for coming up with that quick respond. Nightlight just chuckled. "Rainbow, I can see quite clearly that you don't like me talking about that subject. Do you want me to let it go and let you and Twily handle it own your own?" Rainbow nodded. "Thank you Mr. I don't really feel comfortable talking about stuff like that." She rubbed the back of her head sheepisly.
Twilight Velvet clapped her hooves. "Enough chit chat. It's time for the presents according to me." Nightlight shuckled. "Indeed it is, should we start with Rainbow's?" Rainbow got a curious look. "You bought presents for me?" Twilight Velvet smiled. "Well of course. What sort of parents-in-law would we be if we didn't?" Twilight chuckled and whispered to the cyan pegasi. "Get used to it honey." Nightlight levitated a package wrapped in rainbow colored paper over to Rainbow. "There you go, go ahead, open it." She nodded and opened it up. Inside it were a beautiful necklace with a jewel formed like Twilight's cutiemark, with the right colors and every little detail right. She looked at it awe. "This is awesome." She looked up at them with a beaming smile. "Thank you so much!" All of them chuckled. Twilight Velvet then turned to her daughter. " And now your present Twily." She levitated over a package in lavender wrapping paper. Twilight started to open it immediatly. Inside were a necklace formed like Rainbow's cutie, perfect down to the smallest little detail, it even had the toning between the color in the little rainbow where it shifted. She smiled as she put it on. "Thank you mom and dad, thank you so much." They just smiled. "Your welcome, I'm glad you liked them, it took forever to find someone good enough in jewel smithing to make them." Nightlight said and chuckled.
Nightlight turned towards Scootaloo. "Now it's time for you present little sweetie." Scootaloo looked with suprise at her to be grandfather. "Me, will i get a present to?" Twiligh Velvet nodded and levitated over a package wrapped in orange and purple paper. Scootaloo looked at the package unsure of what to do until Twilight nudge her closer. "Go ahead honey, it will not bite you, I promise." She smiled at the little filly as she started to unwrap the present.
When all the paper was gone Scootaloo stared in awe at what was standing in front of her. "A scooter! A new scooter!" She exclaimed. Nightlightight chuckled. "Actually it's your old one, I just fixed it up a little. I saw that it was in a pretty rough shape when you got here. So I decided to fix it up for you." Scootaloo threw herself around his neck. "Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou." Twilight chuckled. "You maybe should let you grandfather breath a little to sweetie." Scootaloo let go and smiled sheepishly before she returned to examine the scooter further.
"Did you add brakes to it?" Scootaloo asked while pointing to a stepbreak on the backwheel. Nightlight nodded. "Yes, I saw that it had been brakes there before, but I guess they must have fallen of, so I made a new one and placed it there."
Scootaloo nodded and then yawned. Rainbow smiled as she put her necklace on. "Looks like someone is a litle bit tired." The little filly just nodded. Twilight went up and nuzzled the filly. "It's quite late after all, I think I'll head to bed to, good night everypony. See you tomorrow." Rainbow nodded. "I'll be with you soon."
Twilight put Scootaloo on her back and headed up to their room. She opened the door and went up to the bed. She gently placed the already sleeping Scootaloo on it while she lay down beside her. She kissed the little filly on the forehead and smiled. "Sleep well my little filly, mommy's here to keep you safe."
Scootaloo woke up with a scream and looked terrified in all directions. Both Twilight and Rainbow who had been sleeping on each side of her on the big bed woke up quite startled by their daughters scream. Twilight looked at the frightend filly. "Is everything alright sweetie?" The filly buried her head in Twilights mane and started to cry. Both mares hugged the little filly and tried their best to comfort her.
After several minutes she managed to calm down a little. She looked at them with big, teary eyes. "Thank you, thank you both." Rainbow tilted her head a little to the side. "Thanks for what squirt?" Scootaloo smiled a little when she heard the nickname the pegasi used on her. "For taking me in, caring for me, giving me a new home and family. I never thought I would have a family again. Not since my parents..." Her voice broke down in sobs as she started to cry once again. Twilight brought her into a tight embrace. "Hush now sweetheart, it's alright. We are here, it's alright." Scootaloo stopped crying and sighed. "I guess it's time I tell you what happened for me to get homeless." Twilight looked at her with concern. "You sure you're ready for that Scootaloo?" The filly nodded.
She looked at the mares who had taken her into their family. Who had taken care of her when she was in need of help. "It was around three years ago. I lived in Trottingham with my parents and my bigger sister. We had a nice house in the outskirts of the town. Both my parents were pegasi, so was my sister. But since neither me or my sister knew how to fly my parents decided we should live on the ground instead in one of the cloudhouses." She smiled a little of the fond memories the story brought back.
"One day I was waiting for my sister to come and pick me up after school as usual, but she never showed up. So I decided I would walk home by myself. I knew the way afterall, it wasn't that far. But when I got closer to our house I saw a column of smoke rising up towards the sky. I didn't know why, but I got a bad feeling, so I started to run." She looked down onto the bedcover. She started fidgeting with a lose thread in it.
"When I got around the last turn and saw my house surrounded by firework ponies and the house ablaze i froze. I just stared at the house for a couple of seconds in disbelief. Then I darted for the open outer door. The firework ponies tried to stop me, I heard them shouting to me to stop, that it was to dangerous. I ignored them, I just knew I needed to get in there. I needed to get to my family." A single tear fell down from her cheek onto the bedcover. She felt a wing being draped of her shoulder and herself being pressed comforting towards Rainbows chest.
"When I got inside it was first hard seeing anything at all through the smoke. But I could hear somepony cough from upstairs. I know were the stairs were, so I carefully made my way there and then upstairs. When I came up I could see my parents laying in the corridor, unmoving. Beside them were my bigger sister trying to wake our dad up by shaking him and calling: Dad, come on dad, please wake up!" Tears were now dripping down onto the cover in a steady stream.
"I ran up to her and said. Come on Midnight, we need to get out! She looked at me with teary eyes and said. But mom and dad? I looked at them and saw that they weren't breathing." Scootaloo once more broke down into sobs. Rainbow slowly rubbed her wing across the little filly back. "It's alright scoots, it's alright."
She managed to calm herself once more. "I looked at her and said: We can't get them out by ourselves, we need the firework ponies help for that. She nodded and started to run towards the staircase, but just in that moment a support beam from the roof feel down and blocked of the stair and the living room."
She took a deep breath. "She turned around and started to run for our bedroom. Grabbing me on the why and throwing me up on her back. She told me to hold on tight in her mane and so I did. She ran through the open door and towards the window. She stopped and opened the window. She looked back at me and asked: Do you trust me Scootaloo? I looked at her confused and said: Of course I trust you Midnight. She nodded and looked back at the window. I sensed what she was gonna do and tried to press myself towards her back and held on as tight as I could. She took a leap out from the open window and spread her wings. It slowed our fall a little. Enough for me to survive with a severe concussion and a few broken ribs. But my sister took most of it. Sh-she didn't make it." She buried her head in Rainbow chest and cried.
Rainbow hugged the little filly tight. "Hush now scoots, it's gonna be ok. I promise you, it's gonna be okay." She looked up at Twilight who just joined the hug and quitly nuzzled the little filly's head. Twilight looked at her daughter and gave a little nudge. "Do you want some icecream or chocolate cake?" Scootalo's looked at her with big pleading eyes while trying to wipe away her tears. "Yes please."
Twillight was laying on a cushion in front of the crackling fire in the livingroom reading a book about advanced mathematics. She was suddenly jolted out from her concentration on the book by the thunder and looks out through the window at the storm raging on outside. "Huh, I knew the weatherteam had a storm scheduled, but this seems a bit extreme, I hope Scootaloo gets home soon." Spike looked up from his comicbook. "Yeah, nobody should be out in this kind of weather, especially not my little niece."
Just as Spike said that another lightning struck somewhere up higher on the mountain and the thunder almost made some ponies in the town deaf. But it mostly scared ponies, especially a little orange pegasi filly on her way home from school. She looked out from her impromptu hiding place underneath a park bench and up at the sky. "Oh, it was just thunder." She said and chuckled a bit to herself. The filly got back out from underneath the bench and started walking again and while walking she thought back about that day around three months ago.
Scootaloo looked over at her two best friends, Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle who just looked at her with suprised faces. After a few seconds Apple Bloom cleared her throat. "So, whatcha are telling us is that ya're moving to Canterlot?" Scootaloo looked down at the ground a bit sad and nodded. Sweetie Belle went up and hugged her. "Why are you moving?" The pegasus filly looked up at her friends. "Twillight's parents have just given her their house, and they don't have to pay rent for it. And both Twillight and Rainbow have gotten jobs up in Canterlot, so it'll be easier for us to live there, or that's what they tell me atleast." Apple Bloom nodded understandingly. "Ah get it, since RD can't get a honest work here'n Ponyville, they'll just jump on any chance to improve their own and yer life." Scootaloo looked a bit suprised at the young apple. "Yeah, I guess. I know we have to move to get enough money, but I don't want to move away from you girls." She looked at her friends as tears started to form in her eyes. She was quickly brought into a hug by both of the other fillies. "Scootaloo, we'll always be best friends, and we can always come and visit, Rarity goes to Canterlot all the time, I'm sure i can convice us to take us with her every now and then." Sweetie Belle said with a smile. Scootaloo wiped away and tear and nodded. "Yeah, that would be nice. And I'll come down here and visit when I can. Maybe we can ask Flutters if we can have a sleepover at her place again sometime." She was almost crushed when Apple Bloom tightened the hug. "That would be mighty fine. But we'll sure miss you Scoots." Sweetie Belle nodded. "Yeah, it'll not be the same without you." The pegasus looked at her best friends and hugged them tightly. "I'll miss you girls to."
Twillight and Rainbow Dash looked at the three girls from a little distance away. Twillight sighed and said. "I sure hope she'll be able to make some new friends in Canterlot, I hate splitting those three up." Rainbow nuzzled her and said. "So do I, but you know as much as I that we have to do this." Twillight nodded sadly while she looked at the fillies while saying. "I wonder if Spike has gotten everything packed up when we get to Canterlot." Twillight looked at her marefriend and shook her head while saying. "I don't think so, he may be very capable, but it's a bit to much for even him to fix in just one day." Rainbow looked at her with a smile. "Then I guess we'll just help him." Twillight giggled a little at her marefriends enthusiastic voice. "I guess we'll have to do that." She looked over towards the fillies once again and said. "I guess it's time to get going." Rainbow nodded and called out towards the fillies. "Scootaloo, it's time."
Scootaloo looked up and saw her parents waiting for her on the other side of the square. "I'll be with you soon." She called back and than proceeded to hug her friends even tighter. "I'll miss you girls, take care of Ponyville while I'm gone." Both Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom nodded and hugged her back. After a little while she slowly eased her grip on the other girls and took a step back. "I guess this is goodbye for now girls, I'll send letters to you when I get the time to write them." Apple Bloom raised an eyebrow. "Letters, you? Twillight're really rubbing off on ya Scoots." They chuckled all free and than shared one final hug before saying goodbye before Scootaloo ran to her parents as they went towards the trainstation.
She ran up to the mansion and opened the door and quickly ran in and shut the door behind her. She heard a voice call out. "Is that you Scootaloo?." She called back while drying herself with a towel hanging in the hallway. "Yeah it's me mom." Once she finished drying herself she walked into the livingroom and saw her mother, Twillight laying on a cushion in front of the fire place reading a book and her uncle, Spike sitting in a armchair reading one of his many comic books. "Hi guys, crazy weather we got today." Spike mumbled something sounding like an agreement being to focused on his comic book to answer properly. Twillight chuckled and looked at her daughter. "That it is indeed, now come here, I want to hear about your day at school." She patted at the empty space beside her on the cushion.
Scootaloo did as her mother and laid down on the cushion and leaned in towards her and sighed. Just as she was about to start telling her about her day at school they heard the door open and than be closed really quick. Twillight looked up and called out. "Honey, is that you?" A quickly dried of cyan pegasus entered through the doorway and smiled. "That it is Twily." Scootaloo shone up and jumped up and ran towards her. "Big sis!" She threw herself around Rainbow's neck and hugged her. Rainbow chuckled and hugged her back. "Hi there Scootaloo, how was school?" Twillight smiled at the sight of the two sisters. "She was just about to tell me when you got back, why don't we cuddle down all four of us and than you both tell us how your day was?" Rainbow nodded and said. "Sounds good to me, what do you say Spike?" She didn't bother asking Scootaloo, she already knew she would agree. Spike looked up, since he had been listening with half-a-ear he knew what they were talking about. "Sure." He put a bookmark in his comic book and jumped down to join them. Twillight levitated another cushion over to her that Rainbow laid down on, Spike and Scootaloo laid down inbetween them. Rainbow extended her now magically healed left wing(curtesy of Princess Luna) over the filly and dragon and laid it on her marefriends back.
Scootaloo smiled as she snuggled into her bigger sister's side and thought: Life has without a doubt turned towards the better since my birthday.
