Chivalry

Celestia's sun was nearing it's apex as a young stallion marched his way to the royal library, giving distracted nods and greetings to the other unicorns along the way. His golden armor was standard issue, yet polished to a mirror shine. His coat was the dull grey that all unicorn guard shared, save for his short cropped mane and tail, which were an iridescent blue, having not yet earned his helmet. Pausing at the massive doors, he gave a small sigh, "Twily I'd expect this from, but I think she's starting to rub off on Cadence." He muttered, resigned as he opened the door and gave a passing nod to the mare at the front desk. Both of them knew exactly where he was going. Trotting up the stairs, he followed the well worn path to the private wing reserved for Court Sage. Without bothering to knock, he pushed the doors open with a slight bump of magic, revealing one of the greatest collections of knowledge in all of Equestria... in it's usual state of total disarray.

"Princess Mi Amore Candenza, your chariot is waiting." he called out formally, but not too loud. This was a library after all, as his sister often reminded him. His words seemed to take a few moments to register as a pink coated mare popped out from behind a large stack of books.

"W-What? already?" she looked worriedly around for a clock, the young princess' multi-hued mane had been pulled back into a messy pony tail, several hairs sticking out of place. Judging from her dazed expression, sleep hadn't been top priority.

"Five minutes ago, Featherbrain." The grey stallion prodded good-naturedly, receiving a blush and pout from the mare in return.

"Hmph, so insolent. That's hardly a way to talk to royalty." she shot back with her best haughty voice, though it was ruined by the bemused twinkle in her eye. It only lasted a moment before both broke into laughter. Shining began to telekinetically move some of the books aside so the young princess could stretch a bit.

"Seriously though, pulling an all-nighter before the Summer Sun Celebration? Surely your studies could have waited till a night you didn't need to stay up for." he said softly, passing an annoyed glance to the Court Sage's office. "I know Twi can be a taskmaster, but this is-"

"Shining," She rested a hoof of the stallion's shoulder to get him to turn to face her, offering a tired smile. "She didn't force me to stay up, I wanted to help. This was really important."

"What could possibly-"

"So it appears that's all the time we have?" Twilight's serious tone silenced the younger ponies. The office door opened, revealing an older mare with a purple coat, a pair of glasses balanced on the tip of her nose. While Cadence simple looked tired, her mentor appeared to be the very definition of exhaustion.

"Sis, what's wrong?" Shining Armor asked with a worried frown. His older sister was rarely found in such a dire mood, especially on the eve of her favorite holiday. Usually, Twilight would be knee deep in clip boards, micromanaging the whole affair to make sure Celestia's arrival was perfect. The fact she was staying home spoke volumes in and of itself.

"Well..." Twilight started, but found herself cut off by the young princess.

"Oh my gosh, Shining! There's a massive celestial event occurring alongside the Summer Sun Cel-" she was cut off in turn when a purple hoof covered her mouth. Blinking in surprise, she looked to Twilight, who offered her a tired smile.

"Cadence, my faithful student." She said warmly, using the term Celestia herself used oh so long ago. "Why don't you freshen up a bit? I'll explain the situation to my brother. I've held you up long enough as it is." she said giving the alicorn's mane a friendly tussle. Cadence looked torn for a moment before nodding.

"Okay..." she nuzzled Twilight lightly, receiving one in return. "I suppose I should try to put my best hoof forward if I'm going to be meeting with the citizens." she relented with a light blush. "I probably look like a mess."

"I don't know, I heard bed head is in this season." Shining snarked, chuckling as the niece to the ruler of the country stuck out her tongue like a little filly before trotting out the door. His gaze lingered for a moment, before he turned his attention back to his sister. Twilight motioned for him to follow, her magic lifting all the discarded tomes and filing them away with hardly a conscious thought. A casual show of force that would have left even the strongest unicorns panting wasn't even breaking her stride. Only a handful of books remained in a neat stack, the top book aged and worn, with a title known to nearly every pony...

"1000 years ago there were two princesses..."

***

"The Mare in the Moon... Seriously? That's an old mare's tale." Shining Armor rolled his eyes. For as smart as his sister was, she could really get wrapped up in the silliest things. "Nightmare Moon.... what's next? You're going to tell me we need to contact all the candy makers to work overtime to sate her cannibalistic desires?"

"Every piece of fiction holds an element of fact." Twilight said patiently.

"But you're taking the whole thing as fact!" Shining Armor groaned, bringing a hoof to his face. "Well, what did the Princess say about all this?" he continued, trying to meet his sister halfway on this ludicrous tale.

"It's what she didn't say that worries me..." Twilight trailed off a bit as she looked out the window.

"Huh?"

"She never said I was wrong. She just said that I've been studying too hard and could use a break this year. She told me to look after things here while she was gone... Something about the way she said that, the look in her eyes..." Twilight bit her lip and looked pensive once more. This piqued the young stallion's interest. No pony knew Princess Celestia like his sister did, and it was small details like that that any other pony would miss. It almost started to lend a bit of credence to this ridiculous idea. "If the princess wants me to stay, I can hardly refuse." Twilight continued. "So I arranged for a replacement, no pony would question my student Cadence overseeing things in my stead with my assistant Spike. And a princess can hardly go without at least one guard..." Twilight shifted her gaze a bit as the whole situation truly began to sink in.

"Wait wait. You set up this whole excursion?" Shining had expected a lot of things, but this was as close to devious as he'd ever seen her outside of April Foal's Day. "You actually went behind the Princess' back?" It was a hard pill to swallow, not an action you expect from Celestia's most loyal retainer. At Shining's comment she seemed to calm a bit and shake her head.

"Go behind the princess' back? Hardly." Twilight gave her brother an even look. "There's no way Celestia could not have known about this. The fact she didn't stop me..." anxiety crept back into her tone before she shook her head and took a breath. "If I'm right about this, Cadence and Spike will know what to do. I want you there to protect the citizens and help Cadence in any way she might need it." her tone was serious, keeping firm eye contact with the prospective guard. After a moment, she closed her eyes and forced a small smile. "If I'm wrong, then feel free to enjoy some quality time together." the smile grew more honest as her brother flushed brightly.

"Twily, you know it's not like that!" Shining Armor definitely didn't whine, royal guards never whined after all. "We've known each other since we were foals..."

"What? Friends can't enjoy quality time?" She replied innocently, giving a small giggle at his annoyed snort. "Now I'm sure Cadence is nearly done, so I won't hold you any longer. Just one more thing." Her horn sparked for just a moment, causing a corresponding spark to arc across his breastplate. All at once the grey drained from his coat, leaving him in his natural pure white coloration.

"Twi! What the hay?!" The now-white stallion looked over his coat with panic.

"Much better with out that horrible glamour."

"You disenchanted my armor?! The grey coat is part of the unicorn guard's uniform! Oh Celestia, Lt. Rockhoof is going to kill me..."

"Brother... That coat looks ridiculous on you. It makes you look like you fell down somepony's chimney." Twilight said with a roll of her eyes. "Besides, this is an informal trip, I don't want any citizens getting too worked up if this turns out to be nothing..."

"You better fix this when I get back." he said with small frown.

"I will, I will." she placed a hoof over her heart. "Promise."

"Fine," Shining sighed, trying to let go of his frustration as his sister leaned down to nuzzle his cheek.

"Just be safe, little bother."

"Alright sis." Shining returned the affection before breaking away and heading back out. He still didn't fully buy into this old mare's tale, but he told himself to at least keep an open mind.

"All ready, Shiny?" Cadence smiled cheerfully, looking much more awake. She had cleaned herself up, hair now hanging loose and baring the light scent of lavender. She had forgone the usual 'royal' accessories, likely at Twilight's behest to keep their visit as casual as possible. It worked well for Shining in any case, he always felt awkward seeing Cadence all dolled up that way. The natural looks suited her much better.

"Yup," he returned the smile easily and fell into step at her side as they made their way to the no doubt annoyed chariot team.

***

If they were annoyed at the delay they hid it well, giving polite bows at Cadence's approach. She waved off the formality as she usually did, motioning for the pair to stand up. It was something the alicorn had to get more and more used to over time, after all her royal blood was always immediately visible.

"Took you long enough." Came a rough tenor. Spike stood from his relaxed position under a nearby tree and stretched, trying to get the kinks out. He strode toward Cadence and Shining on two legs, head even in height to the two ponies. Around his neck jingled a silver chain with a purple gem in the shape of Twilight's cutie mark, his mark of office as the official assistant to the royal sage. He raised a clawed fist and bumped it against one of Shining's fore hooves, both males grinning. The Young Dragon was a few years senior to his pony friends, having grown up right along side the pair. Granted in dragon terms he was still considered a child having only sprouted his wings last summer.

"Twilight wanted to fill Shining in on our little excursion." Cadence said causally as she took her place in the back of the Chariot.

"The whole story, You know how Twi can be." Shining added with an exaggerated roll of the eyes, getting the dragon to snicker. They clearly couldn't talk specifics with the pull team around, but there would be time enough for that later on. Shining stepped in alongside his friend. The royal chariots were usually used for the much larger Celestia, leaving plenty of room for both, but not for the third member of their party.

"Will you be okay flying the whole way?" Cadence asked with a note of concern. Spike waved it off with a fang filled smile and a thumbs up.

"No prob, I don't get to stretch my wings enough as it is." Spike flexed said wings as a point. "Besides it'll be a glide most of the way, got some good winds today." he continued. The pull team nodded in agreement. It would be a fairly short flight in any case, the small town rested in the shadow of Canterlot.

"All right then, we're all set." Cadence said cheerfully.

"Yes Ma'am." Both of the pegasi spoke in tandem and started to gallop to gain speed, flapping their wings after the first few trots and taking to the air. Spike was only a step behind, powerful muscles slowly propelling him upwards in the wake of the chariot...

Next Stop, Ponyville.

Ponyville, a rural farm town that really fit that 'small town' image. Though with the Summer Sun Celebration looming, the no doubt sleepy town looked to be abuzz with activity as the citizens prepared for the royal visitation. The chariot team swept down with practiced precision, landing in an empty stretch of the cobblestone road coming to a stop at attention, heads held high. Shining and Cadence disembarked the vehicle, Spike landing a moment later with a few powerful flaps of his wings to slow his descent, though he still stumbled a bit on his landing. The nearest citizens paused in their activities long enough to stare at the scene. Clearly they hadn't been expecting a princess so soon, much less in the company of a dragon. Cadence waved a hoof shyly, not used to such stares without the comforting presence of her mentor at her side. Spike seemed to be eating it up, offering the crowd a friendly grin... which seemed to be putting them more on edge rather then less so.

"I guess this is why I'm here." Shining muttered to himself before he set to work dispersing the crowd, much as he would on his patrols in Canterlot should anything sufficiently interesting happen. It took a few moments for the stallion to set the citizens on their way once more, assuring them Spike was 'tame' and Cadence was merely here for the festivities like any other visitor. Surely word would spread to the rest of the small town and hopefully their little group would be able to move things forward with minimal gawkers. Shining turned back to see the chariot team taking off back to Canterlot and Cadence sending him a grateful smile. He replied with one of his own, no words needed to be exchanged. "So, whats the plan?" Shining looked to his two companions curiously, he knew the basics but the others were the ones really in the lead her.

"Well," Cadence began. "First we need to make sure all of the festivities are in order for the event." she looked to Spike for confirmation, who nodded.

"Yup, Twilight gave me The Checklist." The dragon said bemused as Shining rolled his eyes.

"There's always a Checklist..."

"Right." Cadence clopped her hooves together, ignoring the little exchange. "After that we can take in the event a bit and keep an eye out for anything strange." she said confidently.

"Works for me." Shining said with a shrug. He turned to the dragon who now had clipboard in claw. "So, where to first?"

"Welp, looks like we're headed to City Hall first to meet with Diamond Tiara, one of the head organizers."

"In a town this small, finding City Hall should be a breeze." Shining muttered looking down the cobbled road to the busy center, where the citizens were preparing for tomorrow's celebration. Turning to Cadence, he motioned for her to take the lead, falling into step behind and to the right of her as was standard for an escort. Spike kept pace to her left at a much more casual pace, allowing his gaze to wander about. Glances turned into stares, several others beginning to bow as Shining Armor had been worried about. Since they didn't impede their progress, he did his best to remain stoic as he had been taught. Cadence looked more than a bit out of her depth, motioning for ponies to stop bowing, offering them sheepish smiles. Countering Cadence's awkwardness, Spike basked in the attention, offering the crowd large, toothy grins as he waved in hopes of comforting more ponies than he scared.

City Hall turned out to be easy to find, the large, circular building was the hub to the whole town. Ponies hustled and bustled about, moving supplies, placing decorations or just running about with no visible purpose, too wrapped up in everypony's anxious energy to sit still. Most were too busy to even notice the young princess and her unusual escort. Taking advantage of that fact, they headed for the main door of the Hall, which was wide open and inviting. Inside, a small team of ponies were busy decorating.

"Pumpkin could you raise your end just a little higher. Yes, right there that's perfect." The voice came from a pink mare in the center of the room. Her mane had been pulled into a tasteful bun, held in place by a silver jeweled barrette. On her flank, the cutie mark of a tiara topped in diamonds all but spelled out her identity. "Now get two blue ribbons and set them at that same height on the next pillar on either side." she continued, glancing back upon noticing the approaching hoof-steps. Her eyes widened for a moment before she caught herself turning and giving a formal bow. "Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, welcome to Ponyville." she greeted. Her words seemed to carry well through the hall as the other decorating ponies dropped what they were doing to bow.

"Please stand up, Diamond Tiara was it?" Cadence intoned with only a slight flush, motioning for the ponies to stand once more. She was getting a bit more used to the reaction. "I just came to see how the decorations were coming along, not to interrupt your work." she said, managing a bit more of her usual playful tone. Diamond Tiara returned upright in one smooth motion, nodding to the request.

"Of course Princess. Alright everypony, back to work! There's plenty left to be done." the ponies slowly began to raise and reluctantly get back to work, wholly distracted by the alicorn's presence. Judging that was the best she could hope for at the moment, she turned her attention back to the visitors. "So, how can I be of service Your Majesty?"

"Well firstly, you don't need to be so formal, my aunt is 'Majesty'. I hardly have any such responsibilities that would make me worthy of such a title." She said humbly, "Please, Just call me Cadence." a flash of surprise and panic passed over the other mare's face

"Um, if that's what you'd prefer, Miss Cadence." Diamond Tiara said, a little uncomfortable with the sudden familiarity, all of her practiced decorum screaming at her for even going that far. Cadence's smile seemed to calm that anxiety though.

"Thank you Miss Tiara." She returned warmly, purposely presenting herself to an equal level of formality. "Secondly, I was hoping you could help us get an idea of how the preparations were coming along." She stepped lightly aside, motioning a hoof to her companions. "Let me introduce my friends. This Is Shining Armor, a guard prospective and old friend."

"Ma'am," Shining gave a curt nod, getting the feeling she'd appreciate the professional attitude.

"And this Is Spike, Assistant to the Court Sage, Twilight Sparkle." the dragon lightly flicked his badge of office before offering the administrative mare a grin.

"Nice to meet you." he said pleasantly. If the amount of sharp teeth in that pleasant grin bothered Diamond, it never showed on her face.

"The pleasure is mine." She gave a short bow, "I am Diamond Tiara, aide to Ponyville's Mayor Ivory Scroll. If you're looking for the status of the Summer Sun Celebration prep, you've come to the right mare." her voice and posture oozed confidence as she spoke.

"Glad to hear it," Cadence clapped her hooves together and smiled brightly. "The decorations here are just lovely. Was this your design?" Banners and ribbons were arranged tastefully, evenly spread around the room save for the upper balcony. It was accentuated naturally as streamers and banners seemed to draw one's gaze to it. Considering that was where everything would begin, it seemed a fitting choice.

"As much as I'd love to take credit for it, no. The designs were done by a good friend of mine. She should be the one heading this up but has to mind her store. She has some orders due to be picked up today and simply couldn't close"

"Even during all this excitement? That takes dedication." Shining noted with a hint of respect.

"That word pretty much sums up the Silver Family." Diamond allowed a small smile at that thought.

"What about for the center?" Spike spoke up clip board in claw. "There still seemed a fair bit of hustle and bustle."

"That's mostly from the merchants, the decorating crew has been through and all the main pieces are up and ready." she paused, reluctant for a moment before she continued "well, there was a small problem with the secondary stage where the daytime performers will be. But we have the town's best repairmare on the job and she assured me it would be all set to go for the morning."

"Well that sounds reasonable" Cadence gave a nod to Spike who checked the box with a smile. "And please pass on my compliments to your friend."

"I'll be sure to do that," she giggled lightly. "She'll probably freak out at royal approval."

"Oh that again," Cadence made a show of rolling her eyes. "Anyway the next thing on our list is the weather, correct?" she asked Spike, who nodded in return. "Miss Tiara, do you think you could point us in the direction of your weather team?" she asked hopefully.

"I'll do you one better." She turned towards the ponies working behind her. "Royal Blue, could you cover for me for a little bit."

"O-of course Miss Tiara." The mare blinked at the sudden 'promotion'.

"If you have any questions on the specifics, Spoon's design specs are over by the supplies." she stated, getting an excited nod in reply. Turning back, she offered her visitors a warm smile. "I shall accompany you with your rendezvous with the weather team."

"Oh my, you don't have to do that! The last thing I want to do is interrupt things..." Cadence looked about worriedly.

"Not at all," Diamond assured. "I'm already slowing the process down myself." she said with a light chuckle. "I'm sure the design ponies would have been done by now if I wasn't getting underhoof." Her self-deprecating joke was aimed to Cadence, but she said it loud enough that the workers were able to 'overhear'. Judging by the smiles that crept on to their muzzles from the 'unintended' compliment, the effect worked perfectly. Shining Armor wasn't sure if he was looking too deeply, but if he wasn't, her tact was certainly impressive.

"Very well then," Cadence stepped aside and motioned toward the door. "Lead the way, Miss Tiara."

****

Walking through the streets with Diamond Tiara seemed to attract more attention, as if her presence added legitimacy to the odd sight that some perhaps thought they imagined. At the same time, nopony interrupted the procession, likely due to said presence of the mayor's aide.

"So if you're handling all of this." Spike spoke up, sweeping a claw over the flurry of activity in the town center, "What's the mayor actually doing?"

"She's attending directly to the Princess." Diamond said and then added after a moment. "Celestia I mean. She offered to let me handle that meeting but well... I didn't think I was quite ready for that..." she admitted with a sigh, no doubt the irony having come to her not long after.

"I believe you're selling yourself a bit short, Miss Tiara," Shining spoke up suddenly.

"Yes, despite her rather impressive aura, my aunt is fairly low maintenance." Cadence added cheerfully.

"Be that as it may, I'm fine with the current situation." Diamond said firmly looking out to the excited crowds of Ponyville citizens. "It's like an easier version of Winter Wrap-Up."

"Why would Winter Wrap-Up be hard?" Shining said confused.

"Well maybe not for Canterlot, but you've never cleaned up winter the earth pony way." Diamond Tiara said with a small chuckle, as if to a private joke.

"Earth pony way?" the three Canterlot citizens said in unison, a low rumble approaching from the distance.

"That means NO magic." The pink earth pony smiled wider at their confused expressions. "Yup, if you don't keep to a strict scheduled and balance out everypony's job, then there's no way you can finish on time." She spoke much like a teacher would to a student as the rumbling sound grew closer, a brown pegasus coming into view speeding through the crowd at breakneck speed.

"What is..." Shining started, caution in his tone.

"Huh, what do you? ah!" Diamond turned just in time for the pegasus barreling toward her. They leaned at the last second turning ever so slightly, JUST missing the mare. "S-Scootaloo!" she squeaked indignantly as the pegasus hopped up and actually road along the wall to clear the Canterlot visitors before bringing the wheels back to the cobblestone road, wings flaring to slow her speed, back wheel skidding out leaving an arc of dust as she came to a stop a few feet behind the group. The pegasus was a mare, if her build was to be believed. She stood one hoof on a two wheeled scooter, the other on the road, wings still flared open. A winged wheel mark was emblazoned on her flank. Helmet and goggles obscured her eyes and mane, her tail a vibrant purple.

"Whoa..." Spike muttered, impressed by the rather dramatic entrance.

"That was reckless!" Diamond shouted, recovering from the shock of the near collision.
"That was reckless." Shining said firmly, leveling his best authoritative glare at the mare.

Unicorn and earth pony exchanged a surprised glance before Diamond continued on. "How many times have I told you to be more careful?!" she stomped her hoof in frustration. Scootaloo undid her helmet revealing a wild purple mane.

"Oh don't get your tail in a knot Diamond, I missed you by at least 3 inches." the pegasus rolled her eyes. Her tone implied this was an old argument and one likely to be held on a later day as well. Her laid back demeanor only seemed to rile up the mayor's aide more... which may have been intentional.

"You nearly hit the princess!" Diamond screeched, a few errant hairs popping free from her bun, further accentuating her panic.

"Wha?" Scootaloo flicked up her goggles and gave a long look toward Cadence that dragged for several seconds, a blush rising to the alicorn's face from the intense scrutiny. She slowly turned back to Diamond, expression puzzled.
"Princess Celestia looks a lot smaller and pinker in public." Spike let out a snicker as he tried to hold his laughter while Shining merely face hoofed.

"She's not Celestia you Dodo!" Diamond exploded, "She's her niece! Princess Mi Amore Cadenza."

"...There's two princesses?" Scootaloo replied still puzzled as the earth pony groaned into her forehooves.

"I... I don't get out much." Cadence finally spoke up in a small voice, mortified at the whole exchange. Spike finally couldn't hold it in any more, falling backwards laughing heartily. Shining sighed, suppressing a smile at the impromptu comedy act.

"Oh, okay then." Scootaloo took the news in stride offering an easy smile. "Nice to meet ya Princess Mimi." At the confused look Diamond Tiara gave her, Scootaloo scratched the back of her head. "What? Her first name's Mi, right?"

"I can't believe you just called he-"

"Nice to meet you too." Cadence looked relieved to move forward. "Scootaloo was it? Please, call me Cadence"

"Yup, that's me. Fastest delivery mare this side of Canterlot." her voice was confident, verging on cocky.

"What about the other side?" Shining couldn't help but prod.

"Well, I haven't been to that side yet." she grinned in reply.

"Oh, MY sides..." Spike was slowly getting to his feet, the last trailing snickers from his laughing fit finally able to be repressed.

"So Princess, Tiara isn't boring you to death with the history of Ponyville, is she?" she asked in a stage whisper getting a giggle out of an alicorn.

"Hardly." Diamond snorted having composed herself from her small breakdown. "Miss Cadence has come to assure our preparations are up to snuff. We are heading to meet up with the weather team."

"Then... Why are you going this way?" the pegasus asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Because that's where they are scheduled to be." she replied dryly

"Well, you're not going to find them there." Scootaloo said simply.

"...and why not?" Diamond replied after a beat to see if she'd expand on that statement.

"Cause some rogue clouds floated in from Everfree. They had to go take care of it." she finally clarified.

"What? of all the times..." Diamond groaned trying to factor this shift into her schedule.

"Scootaloo, do you know where the weather team is?" Cadence asked with far more patience then their guide.

"Yup, I just delivered their lunch." She replied with a grin,

"Then why didn't you just SAY s-" Diamond started, clearly frustrated but the cool head of Cadence prevailed.

"Could you show us where they are?"

"Sure thing, Princess Kay."

"Then please, lead the way."

"Of all the mares..." Diamond groaned into her hooves, Shining resisting the urge to put a hoof on the beleaguered mare's shoulder.

Rumble on the Border

Introductions exchanged the growing group moved back through the town center on their way toward Everfree. Spike hit it off quite well with the brown Mare, impressed by her speed and control as well as her odd mode of travel.

"I've never quite seen a scooter like that one." he pushed noting the now folded scooter sitting in a sling attached to her saddlebags. It was simple in design, no apparent frills or colors but it was sturdy and could fold away for easy travel. "Where did you get it?"

"It's custom." She said proudly. "My friend made it for me for my birthday a few years back. All the store bought ones kept breaking."

"I don't think general quality assurance takes your kind of speed and... activities into their testing." Shining said dryly.

"I know right!" Scootaloo replied enthusiastically either ignoring the snark or completely missing it. "But leave it to Bloom to make it work. It ain't pretty but it gets the job done." she said fondly.

"But can't't you fly?" Cadence spoke up curious.

"Yeah of course."

"But wh-, I mean wouldn't it be easier to deliver things around town by flying?"

"Exactly."

"Er... what?"

"I mean it's way too easy to just fly there, too lame. Getting around on the ground is much more interesting! I'm always finding new ways to navigate the town." Scootaloo said brightly.

"And finding new violation forums to fill out." Diamond added softly to Shining who snorted lightly.

"What about you Cadence?"

"What about me?"

"I mean your a Princess and stuff, what do you do?"

"Huh?" Cadence blinking thrown off by the sudden topic shift.

"I mean your aunt rises the sun and moon right. So what do you control?"

"Oh, well I don't 'control' anything. My domain is love." she said with a smile.

"Love?" Scootaloo and Diamond asked in unison the latter sounding far more interested.
"You can make ponies fall in love?" the earth pony pressed.

"Oh no no no, I can't MAKE ponies do anything. My magic can only ignite feelings already present." she clarified. "Still I must be careful... using the wrong spell to ignite love, or igniting one-sided love could cause a lot of trouble."

"Ahh..."

"But how can you tell?" Diamond asked with a frown.

"Well it's a but hard to explain... when I focus I can SEE lines connecting ponies together." Cadence began, "At first they were just lines and I couldn't tell what they meant. But as I practiced my magic I could start to tell the differences."

"Differences?" Diamond raised a brow, causing Cadence to smile brightly.

"Oh yes, there are many different kinds of love. Mainly it falls into familial, friendly, romantic and potential but it goes MUCH deeper then that." she was gaining a bounce in her step gearing up for a full explanation. Diamond at least seemed interested but Scootaloo was looking out with glazed over eyes. Spike cleared his throat derailing the princess before she could get rolling.

"No offense Cadence, but this really isn't the best time for a full tutorial." he said immediately regretting it as Cadence's face fell giving the dragon a punch of guilt.

"Oh, I guess your right..."

"Miss Cadence, I'm sure there would be plenty of time after the festival if you wanted to talk more." Diamond Tiara said with a small smile. "It really sounds fascinating."

"R-Really?"

"Yeah," Scootaloo seemed to come back to reality with the lecture postponed. "It doesn't have to be a holiday to see friends." She grinned brightly causing The alicorn to look between the two with wide eyes.

"ah wha, Friends..." Cadence blinked wondering if she'd heard wrong. After a beat she began to smile adding softly "I'd love to..." Shining smiled at the scene, it was nice to see Cadence make friends outside of their little circle. Twilight, for all her good traits, wasn't a great example for the socially well adjusted. Well, perhaps that wasn't entirely fair. She may have had her own tight circle of friends and some interesting adventures but the statement stood.

The world may or may not be gearing up evil's return and eternal night but that could wait for now... Watching the three mares chat excitedly as they planned for a future visit left the stallion with a warm feeling he didn't want to let go of just yet.

***

"There they are!" Scootaloo pointed a hoof to the sky where a half-dozen pegasi were battling some misshapen clouds.

"Is that a reject from the factory?" Spike queried with a raised brow.

"Unfortunately not, those clouds formed by themselves over Everfree forest," Diamond said with dire seriousness, bringing a chill to Shining's spine. A place where clouds formed on their own... it sounded so unnatural. But still it had sounded familiar, The unicorn looked to Diamond to confirm but she had already turned her attention to the sky calling out to the weather team. He instead turned to Scootaloo who was unfolding her vehicle once more preparing to head off.

"Everfree, You mentioned that place earlier. What IS Everfree?"

"It's freaky is what it is." Scootaloo said distastefully. "It's full of all kinds of horrible plants and beasts, any path somepony tries to carve out gets overgrown over night." she then looked up to the rogue cloud. "and it MAKES it's own weather."

"Fascinating." Cadence said looking to the expanse of trees in awe.

"No, Freaky." Scootaloo corrected. "Belle, Bloom and I are lucky not to be dead with all the times we stumbled in there as foals... Only Pip is crazy enough to go in there on his own."

"Pip?" Spike blinked at the name.

"Yeah, Stallion from Trottingham, moved here years ago. Nice guy but pretty weird." The pegasus stated without an once of tact.

"Oh..." Cadence and Shining shared a glance having expected a bit more on an explanation but the pegasus had already moved on.

"Hey Diamond, what's the hold up?"

"I think he's ignoring me." She muttered, sounding a bit put off at the possibility.

"Nah, the wind is always whipping when you get close to Everfree." Scootaloo said casually. With a sigh Diamond turned to try again when the brown pegasus unleashed a piercing whistle that cause all of her companions to wince. "YO RUMBLE!" she thundered obvious to the shock of those around her.

"What?!" a charcoal stallion shouted back, the rest of the weather team pausing their work to look down.

"DIAMOND AND THE PRINCESS NEED TO TALK TO YOU."

"Princess?!" was the only audible reply, his coat paling slightly. He motioned energetically to the others who went back to work on the stubborn clouds before flying down to meet the group. His build was lithe and athletic, slightly bigger then Scootaloo. His mane was short, sticking out in all directions. It was hard to tell if it was from work or if it fell that way naturally. The stallion flared his wings slowing his decent until he landed lightly. "Sorry Tiara, Normally I'd keep you updated on the situation but with your workload today I figured I could just get it done and not wo-"

"It's fine Rumble," Diamond said interrupted the hurried excuses. "In fact I appreciate the initiative." she added with a smile that seemed to calm the stallion. "I'm not here to chew you out, Princess Mi amo-"

"Cadence." The alicorn corrected patiently.

"Sorry, Princess Cadence just wanted to check on the weather status for her aunt's sun rising tomorrow." she motioned to the Canterlot visitors behind her. Rumble gave a respectful bow, but pulled himself back up before Cadence could tell him to.

"In that case your majesty we're still mostly on schedule." he reported calmly. "The rogue clouds are much harder to buck but we caught them early so we should be done shortly. At this rate the sky will still be clear before sundown. I give my personal guarantee."

"Excellent, glad to hear it." Cadence clopped her hooves together happily before looking to Spike who nodded in return.

"Weather Check." The dragon checked the box off as Rumble tried not to stare at the dragon.

"Very Professional," Shining spoke up, catching the other stallion's attention.

"Best to get things done right the first time if you know what your doing." he said standing a little straighter, clearly pleased at the compliment.

"I still say he needs to loosen up more." Scootaloo chimed in casually as she leaned on her scooter. Rumble rolled his eyes repressing a sigh.

"I thought you still had packages to deliver?"

"Huh?" The pegasus mare blinked. "Oh right." she said pulling her goggles back done over her eyes and reaching for her helmet.

"Oh dear, I didn't mean to hold you up..." Cadence fretted biting her bottom lip.

"Don't worry about it, This'll just make the next few deliveries more interesting." Scootaloo said with an infectious grin beating her wings rapidly. "Later!" she took off with a rush of wind disappearing down the road at the same unreasonable speed she had used when they first met. Diamond sighed and shook her head while Rumble chuckled smiling fondly.

"That mare..." they said in unison.

"Nonetheless." Cadence spoke up to break the brief awkward silence. "I think Ponyville is lucky to have such a fine weather Captain."

"Thank you for the compliment, but I'm not the weather captain."

"Huh?" Cadence blinked looking to Diamond Tiara. "But then why is he..."

"He is the most qualified." the mayor's aide said simply, Rumble straightening up a bit at the praise. "We rely on his diligence on events such as this but he refuses to take the job full time."

"Raindrops does a fine job as captain, just needs some more experience is all." he spoke up in defense of Ponyville's (apparent) weather Captain. "I don't mind helping out if I've got time but weather comes third in my list of priorities. I need to keep up my patrols and looking after my little brother." he stated firmly.

"ahh, nice to see a pony with their priorities straight." Spike said receiving a nod from Shining who stepped forward.

"So you Patrol?" He asked clearly interested,

"Yup, make three flights a day along the border of Everfree." Rumble stated proudly before blinking. "Um, you are?"

"Shining Armor," He finally introduced himself with a nod. "So you're part of the town's militia?" he ventured, a town of Ponyville's size was unlikely to have anything larger like 'police' but Militia or local guards seemed feasible.

"I guess you could call it that... but it's not official or anything." Rumble muttered glancing to Diamond for confirmation, the pink mare nodded.

"Rumble is correct, Ponyville has no established guard or militia."

"What? Every town is supposed to have SOME kind of guard presence, especially if Everfree is as dangerous as I'm hearing." Shining stomped a hoof and snorted crossly. This kind of gross negligence was too much. "I think I need to have a word with your Guard liaison." he said seriously. Every town in Equestria was supposed to have one official guard pony to oversee all crime and protection issues. The position was usually filled by injured veterans on the mend or newer promoted officers to allow them to get more experience in organization and leadership. They weren't suppose to sit on their haunchs twiddling their hooves while the citizens were left to figure it out on their own. Shining may not have rank on his side but her had avenues to the right ponies that could do something. THIS would not stand.

"We don't have one." Diamond muttered with a sigh.

"What?!"

"Our assignments here have always been sporadic at best, the last one left nearly a year ago." The pink mare paused for a moment to make sure she remembered the dates properly before nodding and continuing. "Since then the mayor and myself have tried to sort it out but we've gotten nothing but bureaucratic run around." she shook her head, a slight frown of annoyance creeping into her expression.

"Look, it's fine." Rumble spoke up, standing tall and proud. "We get by just fine without some snooty Canterlot guard looking over our shoulder... er." he seemed to realize his mistake almost immediately." No offense."

"None taken." Shining shook his head and sighed, much of his earlier indignation fading. "But if things were running as they should you'd be getting paid for your patrols at the very least."

"Paid?!" Rumble's wings shot up in surprise as his jaw dropped. He looked pleadingly to the mayor's aide.

"It's out of our hooves Rumble... That kind of pay comes from the military's budget. As it stands Ponyville needs the revenue from events like this just to keep breaking even all year. I have to jump enough red tape and hoops to get you paid for your part time weather team help..." She lowered her head.

"Well I'm going to be reporting this to my higher ups, of that you can be sure." Shining said firmly. This gross negligence was a flagrant disregard for the guard rules and code. In the back of his mind the niggling worry of the mission coming true became only more insistent... if Nightmare Moon was to return, they would have no back up. Even if he could get word back to Canterlot it would take a lot of time for the army to mobilize and make their way out... time they likely wouldn't have.

"Yes," Cadence's voice broke through his worried musings as she step up to his side. "I'll be sure to let my aunt know about this situation. This breach of protocol will not go unnoticed any longer. I promise."

"Seriously?" Rumble blinking before smiling brightly. "That's great! You hear that Tiara?" he looked excitedly to the earth pony who was staring in shock. It took a solid nudge from the pegasus to bring her back to reality. The pink mare struggled to collect her composure at the apparent fix to a very old problem.

"I- Jus-... Miss Cadence, Shining Armor... Thank you. This means a lot to this town and it's citizens." She said with a deep bow rising with a bright smile.

"No problem." Shining replied. "This is something that shouldn't be an issue in the first place. Thank you for bringing it to our attention."

"Now I hate to be abrupt, but we really should move on." Cadence said with a sheepish smile. "I feel we've kept you both from your duties far too long. Rumble," She turned to the pegasus. "Thank you for taking the time to speak with us."

"No problem princess, it was a pleasure." He gave a swift bow. "Maybe can catch up again during the festivities?" He offered chuckling, "My little brother probably wouldn't believe me otherwise."

"That would be nice." The young princess offered a smile at that.

"Yeah, and Spike is great with foals." Shining offered nudging the dragon who chuckled a bit.

"What can I say, it comes with a scales." he replied with a grin.

"Sounds like a plan then. It was great meeting you all." with one last bow he turned and shot up in to the sky to join his team and finishing the rogue clouds. After a moment attention turned back to Diamond Tiara.

"Miss Tiara," Cadence began, "You've been a huge help today, I really appreciate you taking the time to help us."

"No, it was my pleasure really." she replied in an equally polite tone but it held far more warmth then it did compared to their first meeting. "But you are correct I really should get back to check on the preparations." she bit her lip. "But, perhaps we could up... catch up afterward?" she offered with far less confidence then Rumble did previously.

"I'd love to." Cadence replied kindly.

"Great." Diamond brightened almost immediately before tempering her excitement with her more common 'professional' demeanor. "So what do you have left to check on?"

"Well, Next on the list is to check on the food preparations with the Apple family." Spike noted

"Ahh yes," Diamond nodded knowingly. "If there's anyponies that embody the spirit of hospitality it will be the Apples. You'll be in good hooves." She paused, "Actually I know just the mare that could point you there. Go to the town center where the grand stage is being set up and look for a yellow mare with a red mane by the name of Apple Bloom who should be working on it. Her older sister is the one in charge of catering. Apple Bloom should be able to lead you to Sweet Apple Acres and knowing her she likely skipped her lunch as it is. Perhaps a royal reminder will get her to take a break." she added with a slight giggle.

Following Diamond's advice the trio of inspector headed back to the center of town. Off to the right of town hall a stage had been constructed for the festival entertainment. For now the crowds passed it by too wrapped up in their own preparation leaving one pony alone half stuck out from under the stage. The pony, likely a mare, was on her back shimmying a bit before reaching the next hammering point. Her coat was a sunny yellow, a hammer resting atop a wooden apple emblazoned on her flank. She seemed quite athletic, clearly from regular worko-

Cadence cleared her throat passing a cross look to her companion. Shining mustered a guilty chuckle before looking away, cheeks slightly red. "Stallions." the princess muttered with a roll of her eyes. All the while spike was doing his best to hold back his snickering. The alicorn cleared her throat an approached the stage.

"Miss Apple Bloom?" The question seemed stop the obscured mare's work.

"Yeah?" came a muffled reply, before cadence could continue the mare seemed to get back to her job. "If somethin else is broke yer gonna have to get in line. Nearly got all the supports sorted out here, but I got at least three other projects lined up for the celebration." He tone was no nonsense and to the point, accented by the sound of hammer against wood. Cadence bit her lip looking to her companions.

"If shes' busy perhaps it's best if we didn't bother he-" her whispers were cut off as spike strode closer to the stage.

"Sounds like a full schedule, but surely a small lunch break couldn't hurt." the hammering stopped once more at the dragons words.

"Lunch break?" Apple Bloom sounded puzzled. "What time is i-? Wait. Did Tiara send you?" her confusion shifted into irritation as the mare let out a muted huff. "That busy body, how does she expect me to get anything done if she keeps butting in like that. I'm perfectly f-" a loud gurgling from her stomach perfectly cut her tirade lingering for a small awkward pause before the mare relented. "All right you got me. I'll be right out." She pushed her toolbox out from under the stage and shimmied her way out. "Suppose a small break couldn't hurt." she started to brush herself off and froze as she finally got a good look at the ponies (and dragon) she'd been venting at. "well... ya don't see this everyday..."

~ ~

After the initial confusion and some introductions Apple Bloom had agreed to lead the Canterlot trio to her families farm on the outskirts of town. It hadn't taken long to see the acres of trees that stretched out over the hills to the south. Sweet Apple Acres.

"Impressive." Shining muttered taking the sight in. Canterlot born and bred, he'd never thought much on where the various fruits and vegetables that were stocked in stores came from. It was somewhat humbling.

"Why thank you, The Apple family has been taking care of this land fer generations. Ever since the founding of Ponyville." Apple Bloom stated proudly.

"Well it's clear your family has done a wonderful job here, I can feel the love coming from soil itself." Cadence smiled clearly enjoying the feeling.

"Well Shucks Princess, when ya put it that way it enough to make a girl blush." she chuckled, "but you should save those compliments for Annie, she's that one that directs most of the farmin'. I just make sure our barns don't fall atop our heads."

"I was gonna say it was odd for a farmer to be doing stage repairs." Spike commented idly, arms behind his head. The mare merely shrugged and grinned.

"What can I say? Things have a habit of breakin and someponies got to fix them up. why not me? Besides, Sis has got more then enough help today."

"Oh? Having family over for the holidays?" cadence queried. Apple Bloom chuckles giving an odd smile.

"You could say that..."

~ ~

"Oh..." The Canterlot trio was stunned as they stood at the crest of the final hill overlooking the apple family home. Dozens of earth ponies of all shapes and sizes ran too and fro, harvesting apples, preparing dishes or just socializing. It was like the chaos of the town center replicated all over again. The atmosphere was loud but cheerful, and a little imposing.

"You could say I've got a big extended family." Apple Bloom said clearly bemused at the expression before motioning them forward. "Now no need to stand their gawking ya'll got to talk with my big Sis after all. Come on." with a moment of hesitation the young princess followed shining and spike just a step behind. Apple Bloom waved one of the mares down. "Hey Cousin Fritter, ya'll seen Annie around? Got some guests that need a chat with her."

"Hm, last is saw her was in the kitchen..." the earth ponies eyes widened as she took in the trio behind Apple bloom. "I-is that a dragon... and a princess?! A-Apple Bloom... What kind of business is this?"

"Official type." Apple bloom replied smoothly patting the stunned mare on the shoulder. "Nothing worth worryin' over though. Thanks for the help Cuz." she calmly strode back to her guests and began to lead them toward the family house, Apple Fritter watching dumbly for a solid minute before realizing she had to get back to work.

"So many ponies... Hard to believe a family this big could live in the same town." Cadence was hard pressed not to stare at the many apple family members milling all around them.

"Nah, Most of the relatives here are just stopin' by for the celebration." Apple Bloom clarified, "Usually it's just Grammy, my sister and my little brother. Annie handles most of the farming these days since Grammy threw out her hip." she motioned to an elder pony quietly sleeping in a rocking chair up ahead. slightly withered but still healthy looking, her coat a dull tan with the cutie mark of an overturned basket of apples. "Never had much of a green hoof myself but I do what i can to help with the harvests." Apple Bloom continued

"Annie? That's an odd name for a pony." Spike's scale brow raised slightly.

"Well it's just a nick name but she prefers it." She grinned ever so slightly. "She's got one of those names ya gotta grow into." she said bemused at her private joke, leaving her guests baffled. Pausing at the porch she gave a sharp whistle. "Sis, got some guests from Canterlot waitin' for ya." The elder pony shifted slightly at the noise but didn't seem to wake up.

"Canterlot?" a surprised mare's voice perked up from inside. A moment later an older mare, peaked out the door. Her coat was a bright green, dusted lightly with splotched of flour. He blond mane in a pair of braids that framed her face. "Well now, aren't you three quite the sight. I take it your here to check on the catering fer the Princess' sun rasin'."

"Yes mam," cadence gave a polite nod.

"Please, there's no need fer formality out here Sweetheart. Names Granny Smith Apple. But please called me Annie" she said with a wide friendly smile. The young princess replied in kind, relaxing in the casual atmosphere.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Annie, I'm Cadence and this is Shining and Spike." she motioned to the boys who nodded in kind. The Farmer raised an appreciative eyebrow and smiled.

"Such a strapping pair of men you've brought with you, Good eye." She said shamelessly bringing a slight red tinge to the young guard's face while Spike scratched the back of his head eyes glancing away unable to repress a smile. Cadence herself looked a bit taken back by the exchange, mouth opening and closing a bit but lacking the words.

"Really Sis?" Apple Bloom said in a tired tone, seemingly used to such a reaction. Annie moved her attention smoothly to her little sister placing a hoof over her mouth, eyes widening in exaggerated shock.

"And seems you even managed to get my wayward sister to get her head outta here toolbox fora little while. Truly a miracle." she said with a small amount of theatrics, enjoying the annoyed look on her sister's face. "Well in anycase you came here to inspect the food, might as well have a bit of a samplin'" she continued in a friendly tone clapping her forehooves together.

"Um, That's not necessary. Everything looks to be in order." Cadence said forcing a small smile. "I wouldn't want us to impose." Before she could continue any further Annie waved it off.

"You ain't imposing on anythin. I'd be remiss if I didn't show a guest some proper Apple Family Hospitality for coming all this way." she said trotting over to a hanging triangle and ringing it loudly, the mass of earth ponies stopping their work at the magic words of any hardworking pony.

"Lunchtime Everypony!"

"So Full."

"I don't think I could have eaten another bite." Cadence groaned as the three friends slowly made there way back toward town. The sampling session turned out to contain every possible apple confection known to ponykind... or at least it seemed that way.

"I guess that can safely check food off the list" spike said remarkably chipper. The Apples had been so focused on getting a royal opinion of their handywork or a compliment from the handsome young guard. Somehow in all that fuss the dragon had managed to get through the ordeal only partly stuffed. He looked to the checklist, "So only thing left is Music."

"Something not food? I'm all for it." Shining muttered, "So who is in charge of music?"

"Looks like it's a pony by the name of Crystal Clairty." The dragon frowned slightly, "There's no address though..."

"Well then I suppose we'll just have to ask." Cadence said with a firm nod as they made their way back into the town proper.

~

"Crystal Clarity?" Diamond Tiara blinked at the question. The town hall was nearly completed, many of the decorators had left to work on other projects. Fortunately for the Canterlot trio the mayor's aide had hung back to double check everything.

"Yes, they are the pony that signed up to handle the music for the event." The young alicorn explained. "But they left no form of address."

"I see," Diamond shook her head. " She's a fairly reclusive mare from what I've seen but this is a bit much..."

"If thats the case why did she sign up in the first place?" Shining queried.

"Umm that's partially my fault." A Blue Unicorn Mare with an hourglass cutie mark interjected into the conversation with a sheepish expression as all eyes turned her way. “Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt or anything...”

“Not at all Minuette,” Diamond transitions smoothly to give the unicorn her full attention. “So you signed up Miss Clarity?”

"Yeah! She's a sweet mare but she can be pretty awkward around new ponies.” encouraged the mare began to chatter quickly, “I've been trying to encourage her to be more outgoing and well, I knew she had a wonderfully singing voice. It took a while but I eventually convinced her to get involved this year." she looked to the floor with a sigh "Maybe I was too pushy..."

"Well I would like to meet her first if possible, if she is that uncomfortable I'm sure I can arrange something with my Aunt to find a replacement." with the flip of a switch Minuette brightened back to a beaming smile.

"Really Princess! That's so nice of you!”

“It's really no problem,” Cadence did her best to wave off the other mares enthusiasm. “And please, Cadence is fine.”

“Cadence, Gotcha.” she parroted cheerfully.

“So Miss Minuette, You know where we can find Crystal Clarity?” Shining decided to speak up and bring things back on track, finding himself taking a step back as the mare was all but in his face in a second with that same intense enthusiasm.

“Sure I can! It's a bit out of the way." The Unicorn said, eyes trailing back to Diamond. “Is it okay if I step away for a bit?” a note of concern entering her voice.

“Don't even worry about it, we're nearly done here anyways.” Diamond offered a patient smile, “Besides, assisting Miss Cadence in her goals is far more important to the celebration then straightening a few tassels.”

"I'm sorry we had bother you again so soon..." Cadance said with a small frown. Before she could continue Diamond was already waving it off.

"I've told you before Miss Cadence, I'm glad to help in anyway I can." She smiled calmly before motioning to excitable unicorn. “and in this case I leave you in Minuette's capable hooves.”

“You can count on me.” she saluted before trotting swiftly out the door pausing only long enough to make sure they were following. "Now Crystal lives out on the edge of town toward Everfree, it's a bit of a trek." she turned and began to lead the visitors back the well worn dirt road toward the edge of town.

"That place again?" Spike raised a scaled eyebrow. "I thought that place was dangerous, why would anypony want to live closer?"

"I know right! I've been trying to convince her to move closer to town but she seems happy with it. I think she likes the privac- Wait, is that?" her gaze turned to the side before she smiled widely. "It is, Crissy over here!" she called out waving a hoof. A mare in the crowd froze and slowly looked over. An expression of anxiety being covered up be a small nervous smile. She was unicorn with a dark Grey coloration, nearly black. Her mane and tail were a dull blue, hung loose but neatly tended. On her flank looked to be a note with a heartshaped head. It was a rather striking look that definitely stood out in a crowd, quite at odds with her apparent personality

"Fancy meeting you here," she spoke softly turning to properly greet them. Minuette trotted over to her the mare quite pleased.

"I didn't expect to see you come into town so early."

"Well Um, I was Just going for a walk." She mumbled her gaze veered from friend to Cadence and Shining before quickly turning away. “I thought you were busy working today?”

"Well I was but I got a special mission.” she answered cheerfully stepping aside and motioning broadly to the Canterlot Visitors. “Crissy this is Cadence and her friends. She is overseeing the celebration this year." The mare's eyes widened and she looked between he excitable friend and the alicorn. Cadence eyed the anxious mare curiously, but seemed to put it aside.

"Crystal Clarity I presume?" Cadance smiled to the mare taking a few steps forward. "It's nice to meet you."

"L-Likewise." Crystal replied softly, her face flushed.

"I was hoping we could have a moment of your time." Candence continued in a patient tone. "We wanted to ask you about the music performance you had planned for the celebration.

"The Music? Right um..." She did her best to collect herself, "I was just going to play on the flute. maybe sing a little later."

"Do you mind if we hear it?"

"Eh?" she looked around and then back to the young princess. "Here?"

"Well wherever you feel comfortable." Cadance smiled causing the mare to blush once more looking to the ground.

"Okay. How about we go back to my place then?" she began before giggling nervously. "I mean that's where my flute is." she cleared her throat, "let's just go." she turn and started down the road. Shining and Cadance exchanged a look. Even Minuette looked a bit puzzled.

"Hm, she seems to be in an odd mood today." she muttered softly, "Nerves maybe."

"Well today would be the day for it." Shining said before glancing to the earth pony. "But is it so odd? I thought you said she was shy?"

"I said she was reclusive." Minuette clarified before looking thoughtful. "She is usually pretty distant with new faces. It took a good while bit of time for her to warm up to me."

"Oooh, well in that case it's obvious." Spike said clearly bemused. "Considering who she was talking to."

"Me?" Cadance blinked. "Because I'm an alicorn?" she asked worriedly but Spike just gave her a look. "What?" Something dawned on Shining's face and he couldn't repress a small chuckle, Minuette following a moment later covering her mouth.

"Oh my." all three eyes turned the alicorn's way and she looked even more puzzled.

"What is it?"

"You know all things considered, you can be pretty dense." Spike said simply as he started walking away, patting the mare on the head as she passed.

"It's, well, it's not really my place to say Sooooo..." Minuette said with an awkward smile, trotting to catch up to the dragon. Cadence turned to Shining looking for answers.

He could barely managed to recollect himself at Cadence's adorably lost expression... why ruin it. "Well best follow the our musician and see if she's prepared for tomorrow." he said calmly following behind spike.

"W-what? But whats so funny? guys?" Shining's poker-face nearly broke as he could hear the young alicorn sputtering behind him. Oh this was going to be great teasing fodder later.

"Jerks..."

~

Crystal Clarity's cabin was far closer to the edge of Everfree then most would ever dare, located a good walk from the nearest other residence. It looked homey enough, somewhat on the small side but plenty of room for a single mare. More interesting was land around it. multiple bird houses and feeders decorated the yard, a few small 'dog house' like structures out around back. Several creatures skittered out of view as they approached.

"Well, home sweet home." Crystal said looking back to her guests as she reached the front door. "I'd invite you in but I think in might be a bit cramped... Besides I don't really have and snacks or anything to offer."

"Again?" Minuette said with a quirked eyebrow.

"Well I mean I was going to, but some things came up and it just kinda slipped my mind." she said with a slightly forced smile.

"It's fine Miss Crystal, we've had more then enough snacks today." Shining said trying to ignore the ache in his gut.

"Yes, the Apple family was more then happy to share..." Cadance added diplomatically with a slightly strained expression. There was a small stiffed giggle from Minuette as understanding dawned on the musician's face.

"Ahh, yes. They can be quite... persuasive when they want to be." she sighed slightly. "Anyway, let me just grab my flute and I'll be right back." as she spoke her horn gained a light green aura unlocking and opening the door behind her and she disappeared inside.

"So is she like a Vet or something?" Spike mused in their guides general direction, eyes a few of the animals peeking in from the bushes just out of view.

"Not really, but she does seem to have a way with Animals. They just kept showing up at her home more and more, so much so she started building places for them to stay just so they would stop trying to get in her house.” The unicorn said with clear bemusement. “It's probably why she can stay so close to the forest.”

"Man, talk about animal magnetism." Spike re-admired the amount of animal shelters around the cottage with a new appreciation. Cadence's horn lit up with a light pink hue.

"Well there certainly is a lot of love and adoration radiating from this area, all directed toward the cottage." she said happily. At that moment Crystal returned with a worn wooden flute hovering at her side. Cadence blinked in confusion and frowned slightly but said nothing. Shining raised an eyebrow at the rather odd reaction.

"Sorry about the wait, took me a bit longer to find it." she said looking back to her prospective audience. "Um, Cadence? Is this a bad time?" concern entered the unicorn voice.

"What? oh um nothing Sorry. Just got lost in thought for a moment." she smiled, the aura around her horn quickly fading. Her voice had a frazzled tone that Shining had heard before. Perhaps a topic of discussion worth bring up at a later time as the young alicorn pushed to change the subject. "Please proceed whenever your ready."

"Well, if your sure." Crystal Clarity said slowly before floating the instrument to her lips. The ambient noise of the field seemed to slowly die away as the melody drifted across the breeze. All focus centered to to the unicorn mare as she played, eyes closed lost in her own music. The flute had a rustic old world sound to it, miles from the stuffy classical music from the royal balls. The very wind that carried her song lightly fluttering her mane, the bright blue strands dancing along with the tune. A sense of calm entered the meadow, the music drained away tension and left a pleasant feeling in the chest. As the song trailed to it's final notes the world came back into focus. Silence stood for a moment as crystal opened her eyes and with a tinge of nervousness settled her gaze toward the newcomers. "So... How was it?"

"That was incredible." Shining said in full sincerity.

"That was amazing!" Spike exclaimed throwing his hands up in the air excitedly. Minuette clapped excitedly.

"It was certainly... enchanting." Cadence said with a pause. "I think you may have filtered some more magic then you intended through your flute." she said with a light admonishment, the unicorn looked slightly uncomfortable with the critique. Her gray cheeks colored slightly. Shining blinked, having not event noticed the spell. He glanced down to his disenchanted chest plate briefly. Definitely something to file away for later...

"Sorry, I was a bit, well. I've never really played for an audience, I wanted you to really feel it... maybe I pushed it a bit too hard." she admitted reluctantly, frustration with herself clear on her features.

"It made for a very effective piece for sure, but you must be careful with the emotions of your audience. Intended and untended." she motioned with her hoof to the rest of the field. The audience had grown during the song, many animals crept closer drawn by the music. Birds filling the branches and bird perches while various furry critters sat nearly with in touching distance of the Canterlot visitors. “Animals are much more sensitive to emotional magic then ponies,” Crystal frowned, trying to hide her embarrassment. She immediately tried to shoo the animals away but they merely danced out of her reach playfully following again when she turned to chase off another group.

"This may take a bit of time." Minuette said with a trying to hide her bemusement at her friend's antics.

"Then perhaps it was best we take our leave for now." Cadence said, getting back up to her hooves. Crystal immediately stopped her futile efforts and turned back to the alicorn.

"Leave? Already?" she pulled back to a slightly more reserved tone, "I mean I didn't even show you my singing. You sure you don't want to relax for a bit, I might have some tea in the cupboards an-"

"I'm sorry Miss Crystal, but we still have some important tasks to settle for the celebration and you've more then proven the music is in good hands." Cadence said diplomatically. "I look forward to your performance." her sincerity silencing the unicorn mare once more.

"O-Okay. um maybe we could hang out after the celebration?" she asked in a soft hopeful voice.

"That sounds lovely,"

"Right, its a... well I'll see you then." The unicorn stumbled on her words trailing off in what she hoped was a more reserved tone. Cadence merely nodded and smiled before turning and starting back on the walk toward town. Spike and Shining both said their goodbyes and hurried along to catch up to their friend. Crystal merely watched them leave, slowly realizing her fellow unicorn had taken a seat next to her.

"Whats gotten into you today girl? I've never seen you this bad before."

"I don't know... there's something about that mare. I've never felt anything like this before, like I was in a fog or something." Crystal Clarity sighed and shook her head turning to see the slowly growing grin of her friend. "What?”

“Well, I think her guard pony is a lot cuter but hey, you do you.” she said with a shrug and a grin that made the other unicorn frown and redden.

“Oh don't you even start." she muttered in annoyance, one of the song birds she'd been chasing landed right on her head. Crystal could only sigh into her hooves.

~

"An Enchantress Musician... kinda scary when you think about it." Spike said placing his claws behind his head looking up to the nearly clear sky, pairs of weather team ponies scurrying from cloud to cloud.

"True," Cadence replied softly "She seems like a nice enough mare..." she trailed off with a small frown.

"Did you see something strange?" Shining spoke up getting a surprised look from his friend. "Should we be concerned."

"No, Nothing like that... I don't think so at least." Cadence bit her lip. "Her aura was just... off. Off in a way I've never seen before." she shook her head. "But if she has that level of enchantment it could just be messing with my own viewing attempt. I'm probably just over thinking things." she conceded with a sigh. "Besides, we have more important things to focus on."

"Nightmare moon right?" Shining seemed content to let the Crystal Clarity issue drop if Cadence didn't see her as a problem. "So whats the plan?"

"Well Twilight said there's a book we information about the Elements of Harmony in the local library, there was no time to transfer it to Canterlot so best check it out now while there's still some daylight." Cadence said firmly, refocusing herself to the newest goal.

"If it's all the same to you guys I'm gonna do a patrol around town, three bodies is a bit much for a small library like that." Spike said with a stretch. I'll keep an eye out for any funny business."

"Are you sure you'll be fine by yourself?" Shining frowned, not hiding his concern. Spike took it with his usual laid back manner waving it off with a smirk.

"I'll be fine, ponies have been seeing me walk around all day. If some try to make a big deal about it, I'm a big dragon. I can handle myself." He waved back over his shoulder as turned and headed down a different rode back toward the town center. Cadence and Shining exchanged a look before letting it go. They had they're own duty to fulfill...

Aside: Spike's Patrol

View Online

The Patrol was going well all things considered. No suspicious ponies or strange happenings. The weather was great, the clouds were all gone and Spike finally had a moment to just 'take in' the atmosphere of Ponyville.

He strolled through the town center wondering where he should 'patrol' next. The sun was waning but there was still a little bit of daylight left. The crowds had thinned but the hustle and bustle continued, going from general preparations to personal parties. He still gained the odd look here and there but it seemed the general populace had already adapted to the dragon, at least well enough not to deviate from their own plans just to gawk. It was refreshing really, it took years in Canterlot for him to be treated like a normal citizen. Those upper class type do so love their 'novelties'. "I could get used to this..."

"G-Give angel back... Please" Spike raised an eyebrow as a faint voice caught his ear amoungst the low grumble of the crowd.

"Wat'cha gonna do about it? Cry?" gloated a young filly. Spike frowned slightly as he turned off the main road through one of the alleyways following the voices. Coming into view of Three Earth fillies playing keep away with a worn stuffed rabbit. The victim of this little game was another filly, a butter-colored pegasus with an awkward lanky build. She stumbled back and forth in vain, but the other fillies were always just a step ahead of her.

"Please stop... you're hurting him." she pleaded weakly watching the plush sail over her head once more. The Blond filly snorted in amusement.

"Hurting it? Like, it's just a pile of fluff." she smirked, "You're such a baby, no wonder you still don't have your cutie mark." The pegasus winced slightly at the remark, tears brimming in her eyes.

"Ooh Ooh, she's really gonna cry!" The green maned filly said excitedly. "Just like a little baby" all three giggled until a long shadow was cast over them. The Red maned filly looked up and gasped dropping the rabbit plush catching rest of their attentions. Spike stood tall, wings outstretched making him seem all the larger.

"My my what do we have here?" his voice was jovial but his grin was twisted showing rows of sharp teeth. "I was just thinking to myself that it had been a long time since lunch." he said offhandedly, causing all four fillies to pale slightly. "and Naughty fillies ALWAYS taste the best." he slowly crouched down adding a deeper growl to his voice. "so, which one to start with?"

"AHHHHHHH!" the Three earth ponies squealed in fear stumbling over themselves to escape.

"The Dragon is going to Eat us!"
"It's on the loose, Run for your lives!"
"The Horror, The Horror!"

Spike stood back up, tension easing out of him stance and scratched his cheek nervously. "Maybe that had been a bit too far... oh well." He turned back to the pegasus who was staring up at him with a look he filed somewhere between terror and awe. He offering the poor filly one of his genuine smiles, "Sorry about that Kid, I didn't mean to scare you too. Just wanted to give those fillies something to think about." he crouched down again causing her to flinch and cover her eyes with her fore hooves. when she slowly peeked she was greeted with the stitched smile of her stuffed rabbit. "I think this is yours." he said gently. The little filly reached out tentatively before grabbing the plush squeezing it tightly.

"...A-Angel says... Thank you" the filly muttered, turning the rabbit to face spike, barely peeking through it's floppy ears. Spike chuckled lightly.

"It was my pleasure. Can't leave a bunny hanging." he grinned getting a light giggle from the filly.

"So does Angel's friend have a name?" he asked patiently seeing the filly tense up a little.

"I-its... Fluttershy." she whispered in a barely audible voice.

"Well Fluttershy, I'm Spike. It's nice to meet you." she clammed up once more but nodded looking up to him as he stood back up. "Do you need any help getting home?"

"I can get her home." Spike turned so see a familiar brown pegasus, leaning on the handlebars of her custom scooter. Fluttershy let out an excited gasp before she trotted over to the mare getting her mane tousled as she got close. "Your mom's been looking everywhere for you kiddo." she then turned her attention fully to the dragon. "Saw how you handled those bullies. That was pretty savage."

"Heh, too much?" Spike offered with a nervous grin.

"I LOVED it." Scootaloo replied with a grin of her own. "Those fillies should know better by now anyway. One cutie mark and suddenly they think their better then other ponies." the mailmare snorted. "Some things never change. Anyway." in a flash she waved aside that topic and moved on. "I better get Flutters home before it gets dark."

"Well I'll leave you to it, Later kid. Be sure to get some rest for tomorrow." The filly peeked out from behind the older mare's leg giving a timid wave. Scootaloo chuckled a little bit and she turned her scooter around, helping the little filly get stable behind her.

"Ya know, if your free later I'm holding a all night party at my place. Normally it's just the old gang but Belle couldn't make it this year so we opened it up to whoever wants to come. Be sure to ask Kay and Shiny if they want too."

"I'll pass it on."

"Well Later!" and with that she took off, a much more sedate pace then what she displayed before, no doubt for the filly's benefit. Soon enough she turned a corner and was gone. He turned his gaze up once more, the sky turning rosy as the sun dipped ever lower.

"Hm, I should probably check on how the others are doing." the street were quiet but still inviting as he slowly wound his way toward the library. This sleepy little town of friendly ponies... hopefully it would all turn out all right.

Chivalry 6

The Golden Oak Library was fittingly quaint building for a town like Ponyville. Built into a still living tree it stood out among the thatched roof homes while not looking too out of place. It was in this strange little library where they're next answers should be.

Shining was a step behind Cadence as she knocked on the door and waited for a reply. Silence reigned for a full minute with no response. Confused she knocked again, a little louder... again no reply.

"Maybe the librarian's out for the day..." Cadence looked concerned. "Should we come back later?" Shining rolled his eyes and stepped forward. His horn lit up and after a long pause the door clicked open. "Shining!"

"The potential safety of Equestria grants Royal guard full access to any building deemed necessary." He quoted calmly as he opened the door and walked inside, Cadence following a step behind, looking quite uncomfortable.

"I didn't know the guard that such jurisdiction..."

"Only in emergencies." Shining said solemnly. "and until proven otherwise this is an emergency." With the issue settled for now the pair took in their new surroundings.

It was a small library but used it's space well, fitting a surprising amount of literature inside. Toward the back there were stairs up that were roped off with a sign of private. Next to that was a closed door marked storage. Lastly sitting up toward the front was an older earth pony stallion, asleep at the main desk, oblivious to the world. Shining frowned in annoyance before receiving a light hoof bump on his shoulder.

"See? We just had to knock a little louder." Cadence chastised as she walked forward to the sleeping stallion. Shining mouthed the words mockingly as soon as she turned her back and followed. "Um Excuse me, sir?" cadence asked politely getting an incoherent grumble in response. "Sir, we needs to ask you some questions." she said a little louder only managing to get him to roll over away from her. A pout emerged on her muzzle as she huffed in annoyance. Shining merely smirked.

"Just a little louder huh?"

"Oh shush," she took a breath to collect herself and closed her eyes. "I didn't want to do this but," her horn lit up and she took a deep breath. "EXCUSE ME SIR, WE WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU SOME QUESTIONS!." The volume of her voice was amplified ten fold making the Shining's ears ring. The librarian was less fortunate the volume and force of her voice sending the older stallion tumbling out of his chair to the floor. He scrambled back up looking around in confused shock before settling on a smiling Cadence. "If it's not too much trouble." she finished sweetly in her normal voice. The old stallion narrowed his eyes in annoyance.

"There's no yellin' in the library." with an frustrated huff and reoriented himself to the situation he found himself in looking between Cadence and Shining before recognition lit up on his face. "Oh, you're those Canterlot foals the Royal sage mentioned." Both teenagers mirrored a frown at being called a 'foal' but the old stallion continued on not noticing or not caring... it was hard to tell which was more annoying. "Well I'm not sure what our humble archive can offer that the one in the capital cant but your free to look around. A favor is a favor."

"Thank you," Cadence was terse but polite as she trotted off toward the shelves, Shining followed a step behind quicken his pace as the librarian looking to the the front door in confusion.

"Coulda sworn I locked up before nappin..."

~

"So what are we looking for?" Shining asked as his friend began to examine the shelves closely.

"We're looking for any information about the Elements of Harmony." Cadence's horn lit plucking a few books from the shelf and placing them into a pile. "The are the only thing that can stop Nightmare Moon. That's what my aunt used to stop her the first time but they disappeared and haven't been seen since."

"Ah, so no pressure then." Shining snarked lightly doing his best to ignore the slight rise in his heart beat. He picked up a book from the pile, Ancient Artifacts of Antiquity, and began to skim it. To say that research was not Shining's forte would be a kind understatement... he was a pony of action. Careful and decisive action, but action none the less. An annoyed snort was more then enough to draw his attention to Cadence whose book pile had increased along with her frustration.

"Why is this library such a mess?" She huffed throwing her forehooves into the air, "None of these titles go together at all!" Shining raised an eyebrow. Surely a small town library like this one wasn't going to have the same 'polish' as Archives headed by the Royal Sage... that was to be expected right. He began to scan the shelves himself, tuning out cadences continued complaints. Arts: A study through history, Animal Empathy: what is your pet really thinking?, Aster Aardvark's Alphabet Adventures...Oh.

"What the hay?" he turned to the shelve behind them noting the tend continue on into the B's

"How could this possible help anypony?!" Cadence muttered before covering her face with her hooves. "It's going to take forever to find anything in this place! Calm down cadence, it's just a little set back..." Cadence tried to steady herself taking a deep breath, as Twilight had always showed her. Meanwhile, Shining had a hunch. Without a word he trotted off, passing the librarian who was sleeping once again. He slowly passed a few aisle down, skimming the first few books until he got to where he was looking. His eyes traced carefully along the shelves, the trend continued as he expected. After a few moments his hoof stopped at a title.

Elements of Harmony: A Reference Guide

"Huh... it was under E." he mused with a slight smirk before picking it up in his magic and rushing over to rejoin his frazzled friend.

~

Cadence immediate set to work scanning the tome for answers. Shining resisted the urge to peek over her shoulder, eyeing the sinking sun through a nearby window. Time was an enemy today...

"I think I found something." Shining's attention was drawn back toward the book, Cadence shimmying aside so he could get a good look.

"There are 6 elements of harmony, but only five are known. Kindness, Laughter, Generosity, Honesty and Loyalty... The sixth is a complete Mystery." he stomped his hoof, "Even in the most definitive guide the information is incomplete..."

"No the sixth element is mentioned a little later on," Cadence said calmly. "It will only appear once the other five are gathered together... something about a sparrrghk" she cover her mouth to stifle a yawn. "Sorry, I think last nights research session is starting to catch up with me..."

"You should lay down," Shining frowned slightly

"I'll be fine, There's still more research we need to do before-" Shining had to steady her as she wobbled when trying to stay up.

"Your not going to be much use to anyone if you pass out before the ceremony even happens." he kept his tone light but concern was laced within it.

"I got a bedroom upstairs ya can use." The librarian spoke up catching both ponies attention. "Seems like you need it more then I do Filly."

"I couldn't impose."

"Don't you worry yourself none, get some rest. Your only gonna get a sun risin' like this once a decade after all."

"Thank you sir," Shining answered before Cadence could protest anymore. "Come on Cadey, I promise I'll wake you up in time..." he whispered softly.

"All right..." she finally conceded and allowed herself to be led upstairs, Shining levitating the book behind them. The second floor bedroom was quint but comfortable, with a balcony overlooking the town and a beautiful view of the pink sky, sun resting at the horizon. With a little prodding the youngest princess climbed into bed and allowed exhaustion to take her. Shining used his magic to pull the blankets up and tuck her in. Smiling softly as her slumbering form before he turned his attention back to the book, taking it out onto the balcony to get a bit of fresh air.

Below the streets were nearly empty, many citizens turning in early so they could fully appreciate the sun rise... many of the younger citizens no doubt transitioning to more private celebrations. Though celebration was furthest from the young guard's mind as he began to read through the book himself, skimming through to get back to where they had left off... It was a strange mix of information, some part rooted in fact while much of the book was left to the author's theories for the elements uses and powers. In other words... mostly useless. But Shining held his patience in check, keeping his focus on any relevant information. Eventually the tome provided perhaps the most useful bit of information yet.

"It is said the last known location of the Elements of Harmony is in the ancient castle of the royal pony sisters. It is located in what is now Everfree Forest." Shining stood up and looked out over the balcony, just on the edge of vision far outside of town, the forest line began. "Everfree." he frowned, he's heard nothing but bad things about that place from minute one. Dangerous, wild, untamed... so of course that was where they would be. "Wait." Shining turned his gaze toward the townhall, where Princess Celestia was staying for the night. "Is that why she chose Ponyville?" The sun finally set leaving the soft light of the moon to shine down on him. The Mare in the moon's Visage looming on it's surface, sending a chill down the stallion's spine. The ever growing chance of his sister's prediction only grew as the day went on... now it seemed all but certain. He found his back legs giving out on him leaving him sitting and staring at the moon. A feeling of helplessness overwhelming him.

Nightmare moon was going to return.

"Yo Shining." Spike's voice pierced through he moment of existential dread, redirecting his attention back down to the earth below. "What are you doin' up there?" with leap and a few flaps Spike winged his way up the balcony landing with only a slight stumble.

"Cadence need some sleep from her all-nighter yesterday so was Just holding down the fort." Shining covered her fear with a layer of calm, if the dragon noticed anything her didn't show it.

"Ahh dang, Scootaloo is hosting a party till the sun rising. I was going to see if you two wanted to come with," he gave a casual shrug. "But it's important for her to get her rest." he leaned back on the balcony railing, "So would you mind if I went?" he asked with a hopeful smirk, Shining merely shook his head and chuckled.

"Sure, Knock yourself out." His mirth dried up gaining a more serious expression. "Though... I'm pretty sure the sun won't be rising tomorrow." he said solemnly, he could see Spike tense at the statement.

"Yeah?" he snorted and stood up straight. "Well we'll just have to make sure get the Elements of Harmony then." Despite the looming threat the dragon seemed nothing but confident. "If Twilight thinks we can do this, then we're not gonna let her down. Right?" he offered a fanged smile and held up a closed fist. Tension eased out of the young unicorn and he nodded bumping his hoof against the fist.

"Right."

"Well in that case I'll catch you at the celebration man." he hopped back off the balcony to the ground below, with a wave he strolled off back into town and disappeared from sight. Shining turned his gaze back up to the Mare in the Moon. A new determination rising within him as he turned away and headed back inside. He had a job to do, and he'd see it through to the end.

As the hours past Four stars slowly closed in around the moon...
