Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, there were two regal sisters, who ruled together and created Harmony for all the land.

The elder sister would raise the sun for the coming day, and the younger would raise the moon for the coming night. Thus they maintained Harmony across the land both for their kingdom and for their subjects; all of the different types of ponies, unicorn, pegasi, and earth ponies alike. Nothing, it seemed, could ever disrupt the balance between the two sisters to diminish the Harmony they spread throughout the land.

But over time the younger sister had become saddened that while the ponies relished and played in the daytime her sister brought forth, they would shun and sleep through the beautiful night she gave them. She knew that it was an obstacle she had to overcome, if she still wished to keep the balance of Harmony throughout the land with her elder sister.

One fateful day, the younger sister had discovered a very interesting act that most of the ponies would take a part in during her night. She had found it rather fascinating, and it quickly turned into a very… interesting habit.

But it was soon revealed to the elder princess what her younger sister had started doing during the night, and often times in the middle of the day, and was shocked and repulsed by her actions.

The younger sister had started to record ponies at their most intimate of moments with their special someponies, resulting in a growing collection of such scenes of a most perverted nature! It was too much for the older sister to bear to learn that her younger sister would actually take part in such activities.

The elder sister tried to reason with her, to try and make her give up this hobby, but the young one heatedly refused. She looked upon her collection as art and refused to give it up. But the more the elder sister tried to push her to give up this perverse hobby and find a different outlet, the more and more the younger sister grew angry.

She didn’t want to give up her precious collection. She didn’t want to give up her hobby and try to find a new one.

With no other option, the elder sister had to detain her sister in her chambers, only ever letting her out to raise the moon as a small form of punishment. She mad a deal, saying to her sister that if she gave up her hobby and searched for a new one, she would release her.

The younger sister was furious.

For countless days and nights, the only comfort the younger of the two could ever find was in her collection, and the more she would indulge her collection, the more and more her bitterness towards her elder sister grew.

The bitterness in the young one’s heart had grown, so that when she was called out again to raise the moon, she had completely transformed into a wicked mare of darkness: Nightmare Moon.

She had vowed that the sun would never rise again, and would shroud the land in an eternal night, under her rule.

But that wasn’t the worst of it.

Because of the darkness in her heart combined with her only hope for solace in her collection, she had also begun in taking part of the act of forcing herself on her own pony subjects. It didn’t matter if they were a stallion or a mare, she would conquer them for her own satisfaction. She was never fully satisfied, creating more and more ways to commit the horrendous act, and she would do it more and more, to any pony she could find.

It was with great sorrow that the elder sister harnessed the power of the strongest force known to pony kind: the Elements of Harmony.

Using the Elements, the elder sister used the power of Harmony to vanquish her younger sister and her horrific rule of Equestria. She could only accomplish this, however, by permanently sending her dear younger sister to the moon. It was a difficult for elder sister to this to her own family, but knowing what her sister had become and had done to her subjects… She had no other choice.

Afterwards, the elder sister took on full responsibilities over the day and night and has been maintaining Harmony throughout the land of Equestria for generations since.

A purple hoof tapped itself on the last page of the story in the thick book, but then was pulled back by the owner of the hoof. She was a purple unicorn mare, with a darker purple mane with bright purple and pink streaks, lying down in the gardens underneath a very shady tree in the richest part of the grand city of Canterlot. Though to her, it felt more like a giant campus considering how often she studied there.

“Hmmmm,” she mused, rubbing her chin with her hoof. “Elements of Harmony… I know I’ve heard of them before,” she thought out loud, finally resting her hoof back down. She gazed up at the clear blue, sunny sky, trying to find her answers there.

“But where?” she finally asked.

Chapter 1 - It Begins

Twilight Sparkle put her book in her saddle bag, and ran back towards the library as quickly as she could. She was so focused on what she had just read that she almost ran over two or three ponies on her way.

"Sorry!" she said, then turned to start running again.

"Wait, Twilight!" called one of them. Twilight turned. "We're all going out tonight for my birthday. Do you want to join us?"

"Er, no thanks... Lots of studying to do!" she said, grinning awkwardly. She then turned to run off, blushing - partially from the awkwardness, and partially because of the fact that she didn't remember the pony's name.

She arrived at the library quickly enough, and set her book down.

"Spike!" she cried out. The purple dragon stuck his head out from behind a stack of books he was reshelving.

"What's up, Tw— Woah!" Spike slipped and fell on the ground. When he stood up again, there was a flattened box that had been nicely gift-wrapped.

"What's that, Spike?" asked Twilight curiously, as she searched the shelves.

"It WAS a present for Carrot Top's birthday," he said sadly, throwing it into the garbage.

"We don't have time for that, Spike! We have work to do."

"But we're on a break!"

Twilight unintentionally ignored this comment, searching through the bookshelves for a particular title.

"I need that book on the History of Equestria!" she said. Spike sighed and climbed one of the ladders while Twilight continued tearing through stacks of books. "SPIKE!"

"Here it i— Woah!" The book was levitated down in a pinkish aura, Spike hanging onto it.

"Thank you, Spike."

Twilight opened up the reference guide and flipped through the pages.

"Let's see... Ah, here we go! The Elements of Harmony... See 'Mare in the Moon?'"

"Mare in the Moon?" Spike asked. "But that's just an old pony's tale!"

Twilight nodded and read to herself, then turned to her faithful assistant.

"Spike! Take a letter for me." Spike saluted and pulled out a quill pen. "Dear Princess Celestia, I have come across information that suggest Nightmare Moon's return is at hoof! On the 1000th anniversary of her banishment, she'll be released from her prison! Your Faithful Student, Twilight Sparkle."

"Twilight... Sparkle! Got it!"

"Good!" said Twilight. "Send it!"

"Er, I dunno Twilight... Isn't the princess getting ready for the Summer Sun Celebration?"

"That's just it, Spike. This IS the 1000th anniversary of Nightmare Moon's banishment. Send it!"

"Alright, alright!"

Spike proceeded to breathe green flame on the scroll, sending it directly to the princess. Almost immediately, he belched out more fire, releasing a new scroll.

"To my faithful student, Twilight Sparkle," said Spike, Twilight smiling as she listened. "As you know, I take your concerns very seriously. But you simply must stop reading those dusty old books!"
