"Scoots! Scoots!" Rainbow Dash gasped shaking the filly awake "Come on! We'll be late!"
The tired filly opened her eyes, blinking in the harsh light she was exposed to. "Dash! I think your more exited than me!" she yawned, rubbing her eyes.
"First day at flight school Scoots! I knew you would do me proud..." Rainbow Dash had tear's in her eyes, a rare sight for anypony.
"Oh come on I'll be fine! nothing bad will happen,why do you think it would? so stop crying!" giggled Scootaloo misunderstanding the crying.
"No, its good crying, it's liquid pride, I have waited so long for this moment, and now its here!" dash said smiling with glee.
"Well, I need to go to a good school if I will be a wonderbolt. they don't want some badly educated idiot on the team, they need someone intelligent like me!" scootaloo stated, now full rainbow dash mode.
Rainbow dash relaxed hooves behind her head and laughed "Oh your so clever, ok squirt, spell princess mi amore kenza..." Rainbow dash instructed, a smug look on her face. a face that told scootaloo she was about to get owned.
"Umm... well there's p-r-i-n-c-e-s-s, uhh... m-i.." she paused and looked at Rainbow, who was struggling not to laugh.
"Got your bag scoots?" smiled a ecstatic Rainbow Dash.
"Yes I have, where are Sweetie and Applebloom ?" scootaloo twisted her head to both sides of her looking fore her friends, who where going to wave her off. Then two colourful, galloping spots, came into scootaloo's view. They then raced at the orange pegasus and pulled her her into a group hug.
"Gunna, miss ya Scoots" smiled Applebloom, who was sounding more and more like Applejack each day.
"Yeah, we all will, and be careful now..." started Sweetie Belle "I hear some off the stallions there-" Rainbow gave Sweetie Belle the look she gave Rarity when she was about to gossip, "ANYWAY!, bye Scoots , I love you!"
When they arrived at the flight school Rainbow stood awkwardly at the gates, looking around her then she gave in, and hugged scootaloo, and gave her that little snuffle that she gave tank, when she was feeling affectionate.
"be good, kid." Rainbow said holding back as many tears as manageable. scootaloo yet again hugged dash, and set off to school, for her first day.
Rainbow shouted after her, "BE GOOD, I LOVE YOU, LITTLE SIS!"
for Scootaloo if was the perfect start to what should have been the best day ever
"RIGHT!" snapped a gray, bland looking mare entering the class room. "NO CHEWING, NO MAKE UP, MANES HAVE TO BE TIED UP, AND MOST OFF ALL BE PREPARED! am I clear?" the class remand silent, too shocked to speak "I said, am I clear?" then there was a chorus of "Yes miss" all at different times. "Good, now luckily for you, your first lesson will be a practical outside to test your wing strength" Scootaloo in her seat wriggled in excitement " you there!" the teacher pointed at Scootaloo " did I see you with a rainbow pegasus, out side today, what is your relation to her?" the teacher seemed interested.
"miss, she is my sister, by adoption, miss" Scootaloo swallowed, she had never been to school, was this the right answer?
"my daughter is a big fan of Rainbow Dash, she will love to know that I have a relation in my class!" everypony was looking at Scootaloo, most mouths open, was Dash really this famous? Scootaloo was then snapped out of her train of thought by the teacher "oh, and miss...ummm...Scootaloo is it?, good you will, and so will everypony, address me as Mrs Featherstorm, not miss"
It was a different teacher for the practical. many filly's and colts still whispering in disbelief, looking obviously in Scootaloo's direction.
"Ok, its simple, do it as I show you and you will be fine" the stallion put his front hooves forward, bent down, and whizzed into the sky, past a few post's and around some clouds. I would be easy for scootaloo, Rainbow had already taught her stuff like this.
She watched patiently as the other filly's completed the path as easily as they walked, this would be nothing to her.
"ok...next a miss...Scootaloo?" she stepped forward, following the teachers example and she was off, she was faster then any other student so far, she thought to her self how proud Dash would be, and smiled.
Then she felt a shock in her left wing, only a little one at first so she brushed it off, but then more came, and over her right wing as well, she flapped, and flapped, and flapped, but it was no use her wings would not move, she stared to fall, now given up she tried to use her hooves as wings, but any fool could see this would not work, she blacked out.
When she woke up, she was surrounded by doctors, nurses, and pony's. Rainbow Dash was crying, and Applebloom and Sweetie Belle looked like they had only just stopped.
"Scootaloo..." started nurse Redheart "we have some bad news..." it was clear this was the first time Rainbow, Sweetie or Applebloom had heard this, they where looking grim and listening intently. "you will never be able to fly again, Scootaloo..."
The room was silent, had she heard right? why could she not fly? "wait, how?" Rainbow Dash said breaking the silence.
"It is a condition she would have had her whole life, but we have only just been alerted of it, and at a very awkward moment, we have had filly's get it in strange time's, but never one flying in the air before!" nurse Redheart looked completely stumped.
"So...when would I have got it?" Scootaloo was calm, although she could almost feel her very sole ripping, her heart breaking and her dreams dying.
"When you where born we expect. When your mother died in childbirth we thought there was no lasting damage, but it appear we where wrong, if we had detected this straight away..." Rainbow interrupted the mare as she spoke.
"You could have prevented this?" Rainbow was now fuming with rage her feathers well and truly ruffled.
"Well we could have-"
"HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW! AND DON'T TELL ME YOU COULDN'T FIND IT!" Rainbow was almost screaming, tears down her face "YOU SHOULD HAVE LOOKED HARDER!" Rainbow was now calmer, but still in a complete state. "and now, she cant fly!, she lost her parents!, and now she lost her wings!, are you trying to take everything away from her?"
"Miss Dash, her parents death was not our fault, neither was the wings, now visiting time is over can you please leave" nurse Redheart looked stern and irritated.
"no, I am staying here!" she glanced at scootaloo. "I'm family."
Scootaloo didn't go back to flight school. She couldn't. It took her a while to return to normal school. The incident had shocked everyone; even Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon had shut up and stopped making jokes. Everypony always looked at her all the time and handled her, as if she would explode from emotions, like a large crying orange bomb.
When school was over she often had to wander around aimlessly for an hour or more, as RD's job meant she was home late, and Scootaloo was not allowed to fly to Rainbow Dash's home like she did before.
People often said the Everfree forest was dangerous, but why would she care? Did it matter if she was never seen again; by anypony?
She walked for a little amount of time before hearing a low sultry voice from the shadows. "Well, well, well... What little filly has come into my trap today" Queen Chrysalis giggled. Scootaloo was now shivering in fear as Chrysalis pulled her face to Scootaloo's as close as she could. "Boo"
Scootaloo started to run, but Chrysalis stamped on her tail, trapping her down as Scootaloo's attempts to crawl away became futile. "Fly away, you useless chicken!" Scootaloo gave up and struggled no to cry.
"I can't fly! I lost the ability of flight in an accident!" Chrysalis took her hoof of Scoot's tail, as an idea sprung into her evil mind.
"I do have the power to grant you such wings you speak of..." she started, with Scootaloo looking up in wonder.
"Can you?! Really?!" Scootaloo drew into the idea.
"Oh, but yes. I can give you everything you ever wanted" the Changeling Queen then backed up and gazed at the small, trembling pony "aye, on one little condition..." she smiled wickedly under the reflections of her own intentions "you join me, as Changeling alicorn..."
"Wait... Why would you want ME to become an alicorn Changeling?!" Scootaloo gasped, stepping back.
"In contrast to your attitude, you're a very intelligent filly, Scootaloo" the tall mare smiled menacingly "and I was thinking of adding a certain pony the name of Trixie to my little clan. But you are right here..." Chrysalis put her hoof under her prey's chin "now, this won't hurt a bit..."
Scootaloo had failed her attempt to scream as she was completely embraced by a gooey substance springing right at her, and put flat on to the back, under the difficulty, she could still breathe, with much effort. She started to kick and lash out her hooves but that only angered the tight substance to a point where she was ultimately under the trap's control.
"So, Scootaloo. Do you agree?" a question without option. The filly finally surrendered and nodded her head, regretting it as soon as she did. "Now, sorry, but this little thing WILL hurt" wrong was she not, as Scootaloo was shaken by a dark, emerald flame. Her coat burned, skin began to crackle. Her hooves began crippling and degrading away and another heavy headache grew her an uneven, Changeling horn. Soon, the transformation was over, but the pain remained. She stood up and looked round, seeing a little squirrel in the distance, as quick as a flash she shot a dart from her horn and burst the petty animal into flames.
Chrysalis was smiling "you're gonna go far, kid..."
"You will be very happy here, Scootaloo" Chrysallis smiled "I am getting a little old now" the Changeling lifted up a mirror "not that I look it at all", with a bashful giggle of pride. Scootaloo looked around, now noticing none of the bug like creature had cutie marks, and neither did the queen.
"Wait...will I get a cutiemark?" Scootaloo said, expecting the response to be what she dreams.
"oh, no child" the queen waved her hoof dismissively "and if you had one before you changed, the change would have been more painful, as any mark is literally burned of you coat"
"also queen-"
"Oh, call me aunt Chrissie. All my subjects do" she said almost warmly, scratching Scootaloo's head with her hollow hoof.
"Okay! I must ask, does it hurt when you take the form on another?" Scootaloo said, "like when I became a Changeling?"
"oh, no! Not at all! It is but natural, just not for a little filly like you were"
"AND SHE WILL BE AGAIN!" suddenly cried a angry voice
Chrysalis flicked her head to the side, her eyes gleaming with rage "what are you doing here?!" she hissed
"saving my little sister!" snapped Rainbow Dash, a Zebra entering behind her.
"Ha! Sister? You couldn't even keep her from losing her abilities to fly, did you?" the queen smirked, "OR stop her from going into the Everfree Forest..." Rainbow's face was burning, until the rage snapped the line. She launched herself forth at the giant bug, propelling her backwards. The Changeling screeched and whacked her hooves up to the mares chest, knocking her flying right back into a large rock.
"HA! You little fools! You really thought that would work? Oh, come on!" the queen looked cool and calm, like she wasn't even stamping on an ant in a joke like this. Zecora, from nature, is a character of more logic than vigor. And so, her features strained in concentration about her first move.
"What is going on, auntie Chrissie?" said Scootaloo, creeping out of the cave that separates Chrysalis' home from her sleeping quarters. Rainbow flew up again and right at Scootaloo for a close look. "What have you done with my sister?! You worthless bug!" she pinned her to the floor, her hooves pressing deeply at her throat. "D-Dash... it's me!" the changeling filly said, struggling for breath. Rainbow looked into her eyes, seeing a familiar glimpse in those portals
"oh, Scoots!" she grabbed her whole and hugged "What have they done to you, Scoots?!" Rainbow held back tears.
"I didn't have a choice, I was scared that she would kill me if I refused!" Scootaloo wept into RD's fur "I didn't mean it!" she looked like the school filly she was only the year before. JUST like that: "I just wanted to fly. I wanted to be special; NOT worthless! And now, all my hopes and dreams have been snatched away from me! But... But she..."
Scootaloo's voice trailed off as she turned her head at Chrysalis "offered them back to me. And I, I didn't have you"
"Mutiny!" Chrysallis rolled her eyes "disgrace, young Scootaloo! Do you not understand?!" Chrysalis sauntered over, her head high "this is NOT a lesson in the magic of friendship!This is little Scootaloo's turn to stop being a scum and do something useful, in a contrast!" the queen gripped at Sootaloo's wing and ripped it like it was paper "that's why I gave you your wings!" Scootaloo was struck with savage pain, but after a little trembling, the muscles of her wings were still able to respond, and so she fired herself from the ground and hit the queen in the face like a bullet in the air "Serpent!" screamed the giant insect like mare, recovering her brain in her skull. When all was settled, she aimed and her horn released a devastating beam of destructive laser, pounding at Scootaloo with first shot. The formally majestic Scootaloo flopped to the floor like a leaf, crumbing away into a silent, still heap on the floor.
"SCOOTS!!" Rainbow sped towards the ground, "Scoots! wake up little sis! please!" Rainbow went from controllable shouting to a whine which seemed to break will all emotion that boiled in her stomach. Tears - the heavy rain upon the blue plains of her face. Chrysalis, nowhere to be found. Optimism would say that this would be the point at which Scootaloo would open her eyes, but reality was only there to prevent that from happening.
Rainbow went to her grave from that day on, every day she would take a different type of flower till wasp's started mating in the foliage. "ya know Rainbow you have seen me every day are you not bored yet?" Rainbow dash spun round, she could not believe her ears.
she spun round, in a haze of astonishment and joy, to see scootaloo stood right in front of her, she was almost transparent and had a light blue glow to her.
"but..." she rubbed her eyes, she MUST have been seeing things there is no way that scoots could have been there, right in front of her like that! no way in a million years. the ghostly filly walked forward and put a light hoof on RD's shoulder and just smiled, rainbow cried, and cried,and cried, till so many tears ran down her cheeks she begun to water the plants that she had laid.
"come on dash! stop cryin' what is wrong whit you huh? you are not a cry baby are you?" scootaloo was grinning from ear to ear.
"c-can...can you stay?"
scootaloos smile dropped. "no...I can,t..but...I so wish I could!I love you RD!" she then kissed rainbow on her tear soaked cheek
