> Rainbow Apple Acres > by MuffinYouSoCrazy > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Late Again > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Celestia's sun shone brightly through the window, bathing everything in the room in a soft orange light. It was a beautiful sight, that is, if Rainbow Dash were awake to see it. "Yes... Thanks Spitfire... I am awesome," she muttered out loud. Suddenly a high pitched whining hit her ears and almost subconsciously, she reached for her alarm clock. Her eyes slowly blinked open upon her hooves touching her cloud stand and not the evil device. She looked over at the rest of the room, her eyes adjusting to the light. She frowned at the floor noticing that that was where the clock was. And it was her favorite dream too. The one where see became the captain of the Wonderbolts and was idolized by thousands of cheering fans. Wow, it's pretty bright outsi- her eyes suddenly shot wide open. "Ohno-ohno-ohno-ohno-ohno," if I'm late again my boss will kill me! Ten minutes later, and an incident that included accidentally grabbing shampoo instead of toothpaste, she was ready to go. As she stretched her wings and rocketed into the sky her mind replayed yesterday’s conversation she had with her boss. "I'm sorry but at least I finished my work on tim-" "No," Cloudkicker said. "I'm tired of that same excuse day after day!" He was really getting angry now "I need someone here that I can depend on, so if your late again you're FIRED!!" His words hung heavily in Rainbow Dash’s ears. Even though I'm always late, I do get my work done... and do a good job. But he had sounded very serious. She saw the Cloudsdale Weather Facility, flapped her wings hard, and nosedived straight for the door. As she came in, her boss was waiting and said "you’re late... again." "I'm sorry Cloudkicker, but-" Cloudkicker just sighed and said "we have a lot of work to do, so I'll talk to you about this later." Rainbow sighed and hurried to where she needed to be. Wow that was a tough day she thought, Cloudkicker was right. Rainbow dash had not been given a break. She had to place clouds for a storm and break clouds all over Ponyville. But it had been a good day and she could finally go home. Maybe I’ll go see go practice some new tricks or see one of my friends. She was shaken out of her daydreams by a voice. "Rainbow Dash, see me in my office. Immediately." Rainbow gulped and remembered the conversation she had earlier. Well this can’t be good she thought with worry... nah she thought. They won’t fire me, I do too good of a job! She opened the door to his office and saw him with an unhappy face. Her nervousness returned. "Rainbow Dash, I'm sorry, but you’re fired." Suddenly, everything was crashing around her. "Bu-but I finished all my work and I was only a little late," she yelled a little louder than she probably should've. "I needed your help today... that's why I waited until now. I'm sorry, but I need a more dependable weather captain." "But what about bits!" Her eyes went wide, for the first time she worried about her house. A nice cloud home like that just didn't pop out of nowhere. "I'm sorry Rainbow, it’s nothing personal but I just have to let you go." His features softened, "I really am sorry." Opening a drawer somewhere behind his desk he brought out a small pouch. "Here's your days’ worth of bits." She trotted slowly up to it with a blank look on her face. This is a dream right? Grabbing it in her mouth, she left the room and walked down the hallway and outside. A few people waved to her but she just started flapping her wings and flew away. Some of the pegasi were giving her weird looks. No doubt they were confused at her somber attitude, which was very strange for the usually cocky Rainbow Dash. Flying across the sky she just stared ahead. Why am I not waking up? Rainbow glided to her front door and walked inside. "This is so not awesome," she groaned. How will I pay for food or my house? She felt herself tear up a little. Blinking fast, she said aloud "no, I'm not gonna cry." Okay, now I need to think about what I'm going to do. Usually going flying clears my head but I need advice. Hmm... well, Applejack might be able to help me. Yeah! The corners of her mouth twitched upwards. She and Big Mac have to pay for the farm so they could help me find out how long I can live without getting another job. With a look of determination on her face she quickly flew out of her door and started heading towards Sweet Apple Acres. Everything’s going to be okay she told herself, but she knew things were not okay and probably wouldn't be. Seeing the big red barn and a certain orange mare pushing a cart inside it, Rainbow allowed a small smile to form on her face. As she began her descent she felt that things would end up well. Applejack looked up at the sky and smiled, noticing a rainbow maned pegasus flying towards her. "Howdy, Rainbow!" Something’s wrong here. Rainbow just gently floated to the ground and was slowly walking towards her, and she had a somber look on her face opposed to her usual confident grin. "Hiya AJ..." she said with a small frown. "Ah can tell that something’s bothering ya, sugarcube. What’s wrong?" Trotting over to Rainbow Dash she gave her friend a sympathetic look. "Actually Applejack, there is something wrong. Something totally bad happened earlier today." She then proceeded to recount her days events to Applejack whose eyes were wide open in shock after hearing the bad news. "Oh Rainbow Ah'm terribly sorry," she said, enveloping Rainbow in a big hug. Applejack felt warm and nice. Rainbow returned the hug tears welling in her eyes. "Thanks AJ you’re the best." "Do you want to come inside for some apple juice?" she asked leading Rainbow towards her home. "Yeah, that sounds great." Walking inside, Rainbow felt comfortable in the cozy house. Sure, it wasn't that big but it had a nice atmosphere. Applejack poured them some apple juice and they sat at the table just drinking in the silence. Rainbow Dash was the first to break the silence. "I actually need some help from you." Applejack grinned and promised, "Ah'll do anything Ah can to help a friend in need." Grabbing a small envelope from her mane, she put it on the table and said "here’s my bills and the amount of money that I have in the bank. Could you help me figure out much longer I'll be able to pay for my house?" "Sure thing, sugarcube! Ah take care of the financial problems here on the farm. I'll just need a minute or two." Rainbow sat and fidgeted in her seat after five minutes becoming a little bored, when suddenly Applejack looked up from the paperwork with a worried expression. Rainbow suddenly felt very nervous. "How bad is it?!" Applejack gulped and said "W-well you have just enough for another..." she stopped and looked away from Rainbow. "What, AJ? How much time do I have left before I have to get another job?!" Applejack cleared her throat and avoided Rainbows eyes, and murmured "two weeks." And that was the last thing Rainbow heard before she blacked out. > Applejacks Offer > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Applejack heard a thud as Rainbow Dash fainted. Sighing she got up and went over to her. Using her mouth she dragged rainbow by her tail into the next room and put her on the couch. "Alright Rainbow wake up now " she said lightly poking her on the forehead. The front door creaked open and then Applejack heard a voice "Sis are ya in here? " Still trying to wake up her friend she said "Ah'm in here Applebloom." Applebloom walked into the living room and gave her sister a confused stare upon seeing her sister now beginning to shake her Pegasus friend. "Uhhh.... why is Miss Rainbow Dash sleeping on our couch?" With a dismal look on her face Applejack told Applebloom about what happened. "Applebloom... Ah don't know if RD is goning ta be able to keep her home." Finally giving up on trying to wake her she walks towards her sister. Well she needs a new job and not to mention shes already behind on payments (something to do with Wonderbolts merchandise.) Even if she got some more money in time, she probably wouldn't get a high paying job anytime soon in Ponyville. Applebloom had a hoof on her chin apparently deep in thought when suddenly she got a brilliant idea. "SIS!! " Applebloom shrieked at the top of her lungs. "What!?!" Applebloom jumping excitedly told Applejack of her (hopefully) great idea. Rainbow Dash was spiraling through the sky at tremendous speeds. Finally slowing down she gazed downwards at the stands filled with thousands of cheering fans awaiting her greatest trick. They wont have to wait for long she thought with a smirk. Just as she was about to preform one of the greatest feats possible she smelled something. Is...is that apple pie? With a bemused look she looked around but she was alone in the sky. What was that? Her ears twitched. Hmmm I thought I heard someone call me...WAIT there it was again only louder. "Rainbow...Rainbow RAINBOW!!" At that last incredibly loud voice she was startled out of the sky and sped towards the ground. Screaming she tried to open her wings. Why wont they open!? "AHHHH AHHHH!!!" Two mere feet away from the hard ground she woke up. Her eyes opened wide and then she fell of the couch...good going Rainbow she thought. She got up and walked toward the kitchen where an aroma suggested that the applepie wasn't just imagined by her subconscious. Applejack was just pulling a steaming pie out of the oven when she saw Rainbow walk in. Thank goodness shes awake Ah was worried there for a minute. "Howdy RD sleep well? " she teased. "Um..." thinking of the dream "I guess you could say that. And if you tell anypony that I fainted I will have to hurt you" in a I'm only half-joking tone. Giggiling a little Applejack thought well at least shes back to normal. "Sugarcube?" "Yeah AJ?" "Well Applebloom came up with an idea to help out with yer problem. And at first Ah wasn't sure but the more Ah think about it the better it sounds." "Well!" Rainbow said in a slightly annoyed tone "Are you gonna tell me." "Hold yer horses Ahm getting there" trotting over to the table as well she started to tell Rainbow about her sisters idea...and about one big problem it posed. "Well Miss Rainbow might lose her home cause she wont be able ta find a job in time that pays as much as her old one right?" Applejack nodded at this "Yeah, what about it?" Applebloom sheepishly nodded "Alrighty then Ah'll just get to the point. Well she could work here." Applejack deadpanned "Are ya serious?" Shaking her head she stated "Y'all know we can't afford to hire other ponies!" "Yeah, yeah Ah know that but what Ah was getting at is that Miss Rainbow can help on the farm. And in exchange she could live here." She face grew serious "She wont be able ta pay for her things and will have to live on the streets. This way she'll be okay and we get another worker for free." "Sure it sounded silly at first but it seems like a good idea if ya think about it." Applejack said finishing her story Rainbow Dash beamed at Applejack with a heartfelt grin "You'd do that for me?" "Of course sugarcube y'all my best friend and Ah'd do anything ta help ya out." She finished. Then she walked over to Rainbow and gave her a reassuring hug "Ah'll do what a can ta help y'all. Your familly in my book." Rainbows brow furrowed in confusion and her smile faded a little. "But you said there was a problem..." "Well...for this plan ta work you'll need ta give up yer cloud house." Rainbow frowned "But what about everything I have up there? And what about Tank?" "Y'all can bring yer important stuff here and turn the guest room into yer room." She said giving her friend a small poke. Silence descended upon the table as it had earlier. "Okay. I've made my decision. Even though it will be a change-No a HUGE change to my life I would love to work on the farm. Seeing as its my best option." Almost adding as an afterthought "For now at least." Applejack knew it was the best decision for her friend and was excited for her friend coming to live with her. "That sounds mighty fine Rainbow!" "Hey Applejack you know what this calls for right?" "Uhhhmm..." she tapped her hoof on her chin a few times before giving up "No what?" "Pie." Well things are going to be really different she thought while eating pie that Soarin would give his wings for. Applejack was eating her piece pie to when Applebloom walked through the door. She had multicolor make-up all over her and lipstick on everything but her lips. "Well Cutie Mark Stylists was a dumb idea." Applejack and Rainbow Dash found themselfs guffawing on the floor. But different isn't always a bad thing she decided. > Moving In > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rainbow Dash put the last of her things in a cardboard box and closed it. "Thanks again FlutterShy." "Oh you're very welcome Rainbow Dash it was no trouble at all." FlutterShy muttered picking up one of the few boxes that was left. She then flew outside the open door and started heading towards Sweet Apple Acres. Looking around the now empty house she felt a pang of sadness. Well it always was a little lonely...it still is. This was true when she bought the house she couldn't sleep for a couple of nights, the quietness was unnerving. Walking through all the rooms she felt even with the meager amount of things she owned the house was empty. Snapping out of her memories she noticed that FlutterShy was calling her name in a whisper that Rainbow had to strain to hear, even in the silent cloud house. "Rainbow?...Are you still here?..." Mischievously grinning Rainbow sucked in a deep breath and shouted as loud as she could "I"M IN HERE!!" The resounding yelp from the other room made her laugh...and the sound of things breaking instantly silenced her. Leaping into the air she rushed down the hallway and into the kitchen (if you could call a room with a table, cabinets and a refrigerator a "kitchen") to find an open box on the ground its contents spilling everywhere. And a certain yellow Pegasus cowering on the floor. Good going Rainbow, she thought rolling her eyes. "FlutterShy...you can get up now." Peeking out from behind a layer of her pink mane she stuttered "I'm s-sorry Rainbow...please don't be angry." Giving her a reassuring smile "I'm not angry that was pretty much my fault." Picking up her things and a throwing away a broken picture frame she said "OK then lets get the last of it down." ---- Rainbow surveyed her new room and was pleased with the outcome. A dresser had Tanks tank on top of it and the closet had all of her extra items. There were posters of various Wonderbolts adorning the walls and she even had a rainbow comforter. On her bedside table were three picture frames these were her prized possessions. The first one was of her parents and herself when she was a filly. Seeing herself with them brought back fond memories. The middle frame had a picture of herself and the Wonderbolts on the day she saved their lives (and Rarity's.) And last but certainly not least was the picture of herself and her friends. "Yep" she said aloud reaching a decision "this room is officially awesome enough for me." "It does look pretty good." Applejack noted from the doorway startling Rainbow. Rainbow Dash coughed "Ummm...was I talking out loud." "Y'all sure were. Anyways Ah came up ta tell ya dinners ready." Applejack gave a small chuckle "Sweet. I'm starving." Dashes stomach growled as if on que. Then looking at Applejack she said "How about a race to the table." "Yer on Rainbow. But-" she stated "yer going down." Unfurling her wings Rainbow cut her eyes at her opponent. "Oh it is on now! " Applejack turned and swiftly raced towards the stairway whereas Rainbow Dash flew into the air and darted straightaway for the kitchen. Rainbow Dash sat on a chair and yelled "I win!" Shortly before Applejack jumped into the room landing in front of her friend. "No ya didn't. Using yer wings are cheating." She told Rainbow for about the millionth time. Her face was right in front of Rainbows and she could feel the breath of the pegasus. Rainbow stuck her tongue out "Your just jealous of these babies." then she flexed her wings at Applejack an annoying grin plastered on her face. Applejack's left eye twitched a couple of times. "Ya know Rainbow Ah can buck things other than tress." She growled. Rainbow Dash with a cocky smirk said "Oh yeah? " getting out of the chair and right in front of Applejack's face "You don't have the guts." She teased. Rainbow Dash suddenly felt hooves kick her with tremendous strength and sailed through the open door by a very surprised Big Macintosh. Soaring through the air until hitting an apple tree head first. "Owww..." slowly getting up she turned around hearing the galloping of hooves. Applejack felt concern for Dash, but she did deserve it. Well maybe not that hard she thought upon seeing Rainbow Dash fall back down. "Are ya alright RD? Ah'm sorry you just really made me mad." I hope she ain't hurt. Rainbow Dash started to get up again "Yeah I'm fine it takes more than that to keep me down." Addressing Applejack. Trying to walk she found her legs wobbling, not to mention there were three Applejack's. "Uh, on second thought can you help me?" Applejack trotted over to Rainbow Dash saying "Sure." Leaning against Applejack with her left wing draped over her back she could walk. I hope I don't have a concussion she wondered as the world swirled around her. When they reached the door Applejack helped lead Rainbow Dash to her seat. Big Macintosh, Applebloom, and Granny Smith were already waiting. Applebloom sighed impatiently "Finally we get ta eat" With out another word they all began to devour the delicious smelling food --- Well ,Rainbow Dash thought while tossing and turning on her bed, this is really uncomfortable. When you get used to seeping on the softest clouds a spring mattress seems like a rock. Finally giving up on sleep (that's a first) her mind drifted to Applejack. Hmm...how can I get back at her. A prank would be good, but what would do? With an evil grin she knew just what to do. floating as quietly as she could over the floorboards as to not make anyone of them creak, she opened the closet and grabbed her prank kit that she and Pinkie always use. Picking out a can labeled Pinkie Pies Super Duper Itchy Powder, Rainbow opened her door and listened for noise. Crossing the hallway over to Applejack's door she pressed her ear against it. Hearing snoring she opened the door and as quickly as she could while staying silent shook the entire contents of the bottle in Applejack's trademark Stetson. Turning to look at the orange mare to see if she was still asleep Rainbows tail accidentally knocked over a picture. With lightning reflexes she caught it just in time. Getting a better look she noticed it was of Applejack as a filly and two other ponies she had never seen before. They were obviously Apples because of their cutie marks, but couldn't remember ever having seen them. Giving a small shrug she went back to her new room and lay on her bed now suddenly tired. I cant wait for tomorrow she thought, falling to sleep with a smile on her face. > Feeling Itchy > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Applejack slowly blinked her eyes open, as the sunlight streamed through her window right into her face. Giving a big yawn Applejack groggily walked into the bathroom. Soon Applejacks mind began to wonder. This is exciting, Applejack thought, my best friend is living with me! Sometimes the daily jobs around the farm got a little dull, but with my friend working with me it should be a lot more fun. Applejack pushed her thoughts to the side as she hopped into the shower, but she couldn't surpress a smile. After washing her mane thoroughly Applejack went to go wake up Rainbow Dash, but not before putting on her trusty Stetson. Applejack pushed open Rainbows door, absentmindly scratching her head. Rainbow Dash was curled up into a ball on the bed, with a small smile on her face. She looks kind of cute like this, almost like shes a little filly. Chuckling a little Applejack prodded the sleeping pegasus until she finally blinked her eyes open. "Glad ta see your finally awake." Applejack started to leave as Rainbow Dash stretched and yawned. "When ya get downstairs Ah'll show ya what Ah need ya to help me with." With the speed of a paralyzed snail Rainbow Dash proceded to try and untangle herself from the covers. Finally freeing herself Rainbow Dash trotted downstairs, but when she smelled pancakes she instantly jumped into the air and flew to the kitchen as fast as she could. Applejack was putting pancakes onto plates when she heard Rainbow Dash walk in. Turning around Applejack asked her "So how was your first night?" Rainbow Dash rubbed her right wing "It'll take some time to get used too. But thats okay." Rainbow Dash walked over to the table and sat down as Applejack brought two plates of pancakes to the table. They sat eating in silence for a while before Rainbow Dash looked at Applejack with a serious expression. "AJ it really means a lot that you'd help me. Thanks again, you really are my best friend." Applejack felt a warmth inside her. It was unusual for to say things like that to...well...anyone. beaming Applejack smirked "Well don't let me regret mah decision." Finishing the pankcakes Applejack kept feeling an itching sensation on her scalp. Although mild it was quite annoying. Rainbow Dash tryed to hide a giggle when she saw Applejack start to scratch her head furiously. "Everything alright?" Rainbow asked trying to keep a straight face. She had a terrible poker face. And Applejack saw right through it. By now the sensation was worse. It felt as if ants were crawling on, and biting, her head. "WHAT DID YA DO TA ME!" Applejack shouted finally losing control, and trying to use a spoon to scratch the infuriating itch. Rainbow Dash just laughed and laughed, tearing up a little. Wiping her eyes Rainbow Dash grabbed a bucket used for apples and filled it with water while saying "This is revenge for when you kicked me!" Glancing downwards at Applejack rolling around on the floor "...I think you've had enough." Turning of the faucet she picked up the bucket and poured it directly on top of Applejacks head. Applejack immediately stopped squirming and looked up directly into Rainbows eyes with rage building inside her. Rainbow Dash noticed the look and squeaked out "Um..don't you have to show me how to Applebuck?" Applejack closed her eyes and git up sighing. "Yeah Ah suppose Ah deserved that. Now lets just put this behind us and get ta work." The two ponies walked outside into the warm sunlight. Heading towards the first apple tree Applejack told her pegasus friend "Ah need ya ta buck a tree so Ah can see how good ya are at it." Rainbow smirked "Kicking trees? How hard can it be?" Positioning herself in front of the tree Rainbow Dash pulled her lets back and struck the tree with all the strength she could muster. The branches shook but only about half of the apples fell. Applejack shook her head "Now sugarcube, ya need ta put your whole body into it or ya wont get the apples." Spinning herself around age put her whole body into the kick. The branches shook violently and all the apples fell down. Looking at Rainbow Dash she added " Now that's how ya buck a tree." Rainbow narrowed her eyes and pratictly growled "Okay if your so confident how about a race then?" Applejack smirked "Fine then first ta buck 50 trees wins." Both ponies scattered, trying to buck as many trees as possible. While Rainbow Dash was faster than Applejack, she wasn't as strong as she was. When it only took one buck to get all of the apples out of the tree for Applejack. It took several kicks from Rainbow Dash. Having to exert herself more was tiring for Rainbow Dash, but Applejack never slowed her pace (which really showed how much stamina she had.) Rainbow Dash was panting as she kicked her 46th tree when Applejack exclaimed "Ah win!" Rainbow Dash looked in shock as Applejack cantered over to her with a big smile on her face. Rainbows ears drooped as she sat on the ground an angry look clearly being shown on her face. Applejack sat next to her pegasus friend and gave her a big hug while saying "Don't be mad RD, it was only a silly race." About to say that she wasn't angry Rainbow Dash stopped and instead gave a big yawn. The restless night before and the exhausting competition had worn her out. Looking up at Applejacks beautiful emerald eyes she said "I cant stay angry..." she trailed off. Leaning her head on Applejacks shoulder Rainbow Dash fell alseep in Applejacks hooves. > Awkward Naptime > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Applejack sat on the ground wondering why her friend had gone limp; about to ask if anything was wrong she heard snoring. Looking closer, Applejack saw Rainbow Dash's eyes were closed, and she was breathing in a slow rhythmic way that indicated she had fallen asleep. Applejack didn't really mind that the pegasus fell asleep on her (although it was a little awkward), but there were other chores to do. Deciding to let rainbow Dash sleep, Applejack tried to free herself by slowly wiggling away. But as Applejack started to leave, Rainbow Dash reached her forelegs around Applejacks body and buried her face deeper into Applejacks shoulder. Applejack stopped moving and slightly blushed. Still hearing snoring, she knew that it wasn't really Rainbow’s fault. Even though this situation was weird, what was weirder is that she almost enjoyed the sensation of the rainbow maned pegasus. Shaking her head at the thought Applejack dismissed it almost immediately. I'm not like that she stated in her head, silencing the notion. Great, Applejack thought. Now all I need is for somepony to find us like this and get the wrong ide-. Her thought process was interrupted by a masculine voice from behind "Am Ah interrupting anything sis?" Applejacks face became the exact same color as the stallion behind her. "No, Big Mac, RD here must’ve been real tired cause she fell asleep right here." Big Mac walked in front of the two ponies and replied "then why is she cuddling you?" A small laugh escaped his lips when Rainbow Dash sleepily muttered "...Applejack..." Applejack tried to retaliate but all she could do was sit there, her face burning as she gave Big Mac an angry stare. Big Macintosh gave his sister a big smile. "Well why don't ya wake her up? Or are ya enjoying yourself?" Beginning to be annoyed at what her brother was insinuating, Applejack tried to end the conversation as quickly as possible. "Ah don't wanna wake her up, because she got no sleep last night and she worked herself to hard out here in the fields!..You’re never going to let me live this down are ya?" Big Macintosh shook his head. "Eenope." Turning around the stallion started walking down a dirt trail that led towards the barn. "When you and Miss Rainbow Dash are done cuddling, the chickens need ta be fed." Finally snapping Applejack shouted "WE ARE NOT CUDDLING!" Practically seething with anger at all the teasing, Applejack decided that one event like that was enough. Turning back towards Rainbow Dash, she couldn't help but notice how cute her face looked when she slept- stop it, mind! Okay, now back to square one. Sighing, Applejack decided it would be best to let Rainbow Dash sleep a little while longer. But that didn't mean Applejack was going to stay where she was, just waiting to be ridiculed by some other pony who happened to walk by. When Applejack felt some drool on her shoulder, she decided she wouldn't feel guilty if she woke her friend up. Prying Rainbow’s forelegs off herself, Applejack proceeded to tap Rainbows forehead multiple times, until finally the mares eyes slightly opened. Rainbow Dash picked her head off of Applejack and asked through a yawn "What happened?" "Well," Applejack began. "Ya fell asleep while ya were resting your head on my shoulder." "Really?" Rainbow Dash's said in a surprised tone "I guess I didn't really get that much sleep last night." "Yeah Ah figured as much." Applejack turned away from Rainbow and began to wall away "C'mon. We still need to feed the chickens." Rainbow Dash stretched her wings, took to the sky and lazily hovered over Applejack. "Okay then the sooner we’re done, the sooner I can practice some tricks.” The rest of the day went by quickly after the chores were done. As soon as Applejack told her they were done with their jobs, Rainbow Dash took off as fast as she could flying straight upwards. Stopping the ascent she went down at an angle spiraling ever so close to the hard earth below. Pulling up at the last second she spiraled upwards, coming to a rest high above the ground. Wow, I haven't been this energized in a while. I needed that nap. Heh, maybe I should use AJ as a pillow from now on! Laughing a little she decided that that was enough practice for now. The spring bed was horrible. It was 11:59PM and Rainbow Dash hadn't gotten close to falling asleep. It wouldn’t have been too bad, but the pillow was flat and uncomfortable. Ugh... why can't this pillow be nice and soft like Applejack’s pretty orange fur? Her eyes jolted open, and Rainbow glanced around the room as if worried somepony had heard her strange thought. I'm not like that. No, just thinking about your best friend of the same gender as a cute soft pillow was not any indication of being into mares. Do I though? I mean Applejack is just as athletic as me. She can match me in contests unlike any other ponies. We have been friends ever since we were fillies. Normally around other ponies she tried to act as cool as possible, but around Applejack she could let her guard down and be more open. Yeah we are pretty close, plus we spend a lot of time together. Get a hold of yourself Rainbow! Rubbing her eyes, Rainbow Dash looked at the clock and groaned when she saw that it was past midnight. I'm just thinking crazy because I'm sleep depraved. When was the last time I got any good sleep?! she thought angrily. For a while she had been going to sleep later and later. The last time I got any refreshing sleep was when I fell asleep on Applejack. If only she were here then I could fall asleep. Then like a train the realization hit her. She was a fillyfooler. She fought the epiphany in shock, she visibly cringed at admitting she liked other girls. Actually it made sense she decided. I could never keep a coltfriend; I was just never interested in them. It was as if a heavy weight was lifted off her mind, now admitting the strange feelings to herself she thought she would finally sleep well. Drifting off to sleep, another realization hit her this one made her feel ecstatic and horrified. She had a crush on her best friend who also was a mare. She drifted off into an uneasy slumber filled with dreams of becoming a ridiculed outcast, and being shunned from her new home. > Brotherly Advice > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Applejack and Rainbow Dash were running through the woods together. After the Running of the Leaves incident they both frequently raced through this area. Each one was neck and neck, running as fast as they could, neither passing the other. The trail gave away to a small clearing, where both ponies collapsed panting. Applejack looked at the pony laying down beside her. Her mane was disheveled, there was dirt all over her, but Applejack still thought she looked beautiful. Rainbow Dash glanced to her right and noticed Applejack staring at her. "Uh, why are you staring at me AJ?" Applejack didn't hear what the pegasus was saying, she just stared into Rainbows magenta eyes. How come I haven't noticed how pretty she looked before? Rainbow Dash was getting a little worried when Applejack just stared directly into her eyes with a strange look on her face. Getting up, Rainbow walked over to her gawking friend until her face was directly over Applejack's. "Hey Applejack? Are you okay?" Seeing Rainbow Dash's face only a couple of inches above her own, her instincts kicked in. Not fully aware of what she was doing, Applejack closed the distance between them, and then pressed her lips against Rainbow's. Rainbow Dash's eyes shot open when she felt Applejack's soft lips on her own. Hesitant at first, Rainbow closed her eyes and returned the kiss. The world seemed to melt away, and all that remained was the sensation of kissing Applejack. Rainbow Dash shot up in bed. She was sweating a little and looked confused. Realizing that it was all just a dream she sighed disappointingly. Looking outside she saw that it was still night. I need to tell Applejack that I like her, but what if she hates me? There were many "fillyfoolers" (as most called them) in Equestria, but that didn't mean ponies were okay with it. Besides, it could ruin our friendship. Flopping her head down on the pillow, she groaned. I need advice...but who to ask? Applejack was obviously out of the question. Pinkie would probably throw a party, and Rarity would most likely disapprove of the "uncouth" crush. Fluttershy would pass out at best after hearing the development. Then it would have to be Twilight. That egghead knew everything about everything, so she must have a way to help me. Closing her eyes Rainbow Dash fell back to sleep with a smile on her face. No doubt to a certain orange mare gracing her dreams. Applejack woke up to the sound of a rooster cawing outside. She looked into the mirror and noticed bags under her eyes. No wonder, I was up half the night. Going to sleep had been easy. But her dreams had been plagued with Rainbow Dash and herself doing, as Rarity would put it, very unladylike things. Waking up from the... nightmare? She wasn't as shocked about what the dream entailed, but that she was almost sad when she woke up. That was what ashamed her the most. You shouldn't be having these weird thoughts! Thoughts raced through her head for along time before she fell into a dreamless sleep, a mere hour ago. Could I like her? Getting out of bed, Applejack knew she needed advice. Throughout her life, Applejack always told her brother if anything was bothering her. She trusted Big Macintosh completely, but was hesitant to tell him what was wrong this time. Sighing, Applejack went into her bathroom and turned on the shower. Do I like Dash? We are close and all, plus were both strong athletes. Sure we fight a lot but we never do it seriously. Stepping into the shower, she tried to tune out her thoughts and tried to figure out how to break the news to her brother. Coming up with nothing she decided to just tell him when Rainbow wasn't around. Drying herself off, Applejack put her towel away and trotted down the stairs feeling a little bit better. Walking into the kitchen she met Rainbow Dash eating an apple, reminding her of the dream. Looking up, Rainbow saw Applejack and looked away hastily. Both mares faces were slowly turning beet red, as they remembered their fantasies. Eyes darting around the room Rainbow Dash tried to casually say, "hey AJ, how ya doing?" but it came out in a nervous squeak, causing her to blush even more. Applejack still trying to avoid Rainbow's eyes she just asked in a slightly higher tone than usual "Um... fine... have ya seen Big Mac anywhere? Ah need ta talk to him..." she trailed off. Rainbow Dash said in her normal tone of voice now, "I think he's out in the barn." Still not meeting Applejack's eyes she didn't notice the bags under her eyes. Applejack quickly exited the house muttering a quick "thank you," before leaving the awkward situation. It didn't seem to cross her mind that Rainbow Dash was up before her, not to mention noon. As soon as she was outside of the kitchen both mares gave sighs of relief. Applejack thought that Big Mac would probably be counting inventory in the barn. She cracked the door open and peered inside. When she saw the red stallion Applejack felt some of the fear abate. Hearing the door creak open Big Macintosh turned around and grinned at his sister, but immediately knew something was amiss. Big Macintosh cared for both of his sisters and always could tell how they were feeling. "Is there something on yer mind, lil sis?" Big Mac asked. Applejack sighed inwardly. Great...what a way to tell if my brother has anything against fillyfooling. "Actually Big Mac, there is something on my mind." The older stallion said nothing and waited for Applejack to tell him on her own. Applejack started "Well... ya see Ah have a crush on... somepony." She purposely left out Rainbow Dash's name until she could see his reaction. Of all the things he expected, this was not one of them. "So, who's the stallion?" he enquired. Closing her eyes and preparing for the worst, she said "that's just it though... she's not a stallion." Expecting to get yelled at she kept her eyes closed so she didn't see her brother come up to her, until he pulled his sister in for a hug. Applejack buried her face into Big Macintosh's shoulder and began to cry. The emotional turmoil had gotten to her. Big Macintosh just patted his sisters back and whispered "Its okay Applejack. It must have been hard to admit this to yerself, and me as well." Applejack felt her tears subside. She looked up at her brother with shining eyes, and gave a big hug "Yer the best brother ever, ya know that?" Letting go of the stallion, Applejack wiped a stray tear off of her face. Glad that she stopped crying, Big Macintosh rephrased his earlier question. "So who's the lucky mare?" Applejack frowned a little. "Ah think its Rainbow Dash. But what if she doesn't like me back? It'll ruin our friendship!" Big Mac thought a moment before answering. "Sis, this going ta eat ya up inside if ya don't tell her. Who knows, maybe she likes ya in... that... way too." He wasn't too sure about the fact his sister had a crush on a girl who was living across the hallway. "Yeah, yer right, Big Mac." Applejack got up and trotted to the door. "Ah know Ah can always trust ya." Now, she told herself, its time to find that pegasus. Big Macintosh was moved by his sisters words. It must have been hard to admit those feelings, but she still trusted me enough to tell me. Putting away the last of the apples he knew that he would stand by whatever choice his sister made. > Surprise Sleepover > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- As soon as Rainbow Dash was sure Applejack left, she bolted for Ponyville, flying straight for Twilight's house. Starting her descent, many thoughts raced through her head. Okay... am I sure this is a good idea? Landing in front of the door, Rainbow raised a hoof and was about to knock when the door opened up. "Rainbow Dash?" Twilight said in a surprised tone. "I thought you were helping buck apples today." Shaking her head, Dash replied "no, we decided that today could be a day off. But there's something I kind of need help with." "Well, come inside then!" Twilight smiled, always eager to help a friend in need. She trotted into the kitchen and came out a moment later with a pot of tea. "So what do you need help with?" Rainbow Dash was a lot of things, but she wasn't in the slightest bit subtle. "Well, I kind of have a crush on Applejack." Twilight spat out the tea she was drinking, and started coughing. Even though Rainbow Dash knew she had a problem to deal with, the sight of Twilight spraying tea all over the place still made her fall to the floor laughing. After the coughing fit passed, Twilight said "well... I was not expecting that. But I'm still here to help." Rainbow Dash beamed. "So you’re really okay with me wanting to date another mare?" Twilight nodded. "You are one of my best friends, and I will always support you." Using her magic to levitate a towel from the bathroom, she continued. "So I'm assuming you want some advice on how to tell her, right?" "Yeah, but the thing is I don't know if Applejack likes other mares that way," Rainbow Dash sighed. "To be honest I'm pretty nerv-" She was interrupted by somepony knocking on Twilight's door. "I'll be right back" Twilight excused herself. Rainbow Dash's uneasiness was almost gone, she had told somepony her secret and the best part was that Twilight still thought of Dash as one of her friends! But it instantly returned when she heard Twilight say "Hi Applejack!" --- Applejack was worried, shortly after talking to Big Macintosh, Applejack found out that a bad storm was being created to make up for the recent drought. It was advised for everypony to get indoors and stay put. Her ideas about telling Rainbow Dash would have to wait for a better time. "Hi Twi, do ya know where Rainbow Dash is? There's a storm brewing and she needs to come back home." Twilight glanced behind her. "Actually, she’s right here." Applejack thanked Twilight before running inside the house. Frantically looking around, she spotted Dash. "We need to go right now. A fierce storm is coming, and we need to get back to the house." Rainbow Dash frowned. "But I need some help from Twilight! Can't we get like, another ten minutes or something?" Applejack looked through the window and saw the dark clouds covering the sky. "No, Ah don't think we even have five minutes before the downpour starts." Rainbow Dash stood up. "No, I really need to get Twilight's advice!" Getting frustrated, Applejack managed to calmly reply "Sugarcube, we need to go, now." She tried to put as much emphasis on ‘now’ as she could. "Besides, if it's that important to ya, then Ah'll help ya." "I can't, because it's about you!" Rainbow Dash blurted, and covered her mouth once she realized what she said. "It’s about... me?" Giving her a confused look Applejack questioned "is there a problem ya have with me?" Before Rainbow Dash could answer, Twilight interrupted "Um, girls? Look outside." The two mares stared outside as rain splattered the window rapidly, followed by the sound of thunder. Before Applejack could strangle Rainbow Dash for not leaving when she asked, Twilight gave a small squeal of joy. "Yay! You girls can stay here and we can have a slumber party!" Clapping her two front hooves together she added "and this time, things won't go wrong." Rainbow Dash still needed help, and her (beautiful) problem was right in front of her. "Twi, aren't you forgetting something?" Twilight was too busy levitating books off of the shelves too hear her. Scratching her chin she muttered to herself "now where did I put that sleepover book..." Rainbow Dash knew that her question would probably go unanswered. "Fine, we'll have a sleepover!" she grumbled. Applejack was still angry at Rainbow Dash for not leaving when she asked, but she did not need another repeat of the last sleepover. "Okay Twi, and thanks for letting us stay here." "There you are!" Twilight shouted, and a small book was wrapped in a purple aura. "Let’s have some fun." --- A few hours later, everpony was ready to sleep, after some party games and scary stories even Rainbow Dash had to admit she was having fun. But she swore to end Twilight and Applejack if either one of them told anypony else she kind of (loved) enjoyed the facials. Trotting upstairs Twilight yawned, and was about to tell Applejack a joke when she realized something. "Uh, girls?" Both mares turned to look at Twilight and waited for her to continue. "I only have one extra bed. You two won't mind sharing, would you?" Rainbow Dash immediately said "Yes!" much to her embarrassment. Twilight giggled. "I had a feeling you wouldn't mind." She gave a small wink to Dash. "So AJ, are you okay with sleeping with Rainbow Dash?" Applejack replied "Sure that's fine with me." She climbed into the bed and lied down on her side. Twilight went over to her bed and was about to lie down and go to sleep until she remembered she was going to give Rainbow Dash advice. Shrugging it off, she decided it would be for the best to tell her tomorrow. Besides, I think they'll end up together soon enough. Rainbow Dash climbed onto the opposite side of the bed. "Good night," she yawned. "Good night" Applejack and Twilight sleepily echoed. Using her magic, Twilight turned out all of the lights and within minutes was asleep. Unfortunately Applejack and Rainbow Dash were having no such luck with sleep. Each just kept to their own thoughts while trying to solve their problems. Eventually Applejack heard Rainbow Dash sigh and she whispered "Sugarcube, are you awake too?" She then turned around so she could face the mare. Rainbow Dash faced Applejack as well. "Yeah, I've kind of had trouble sleeping lately." Applejack knew that the transition from living by herself, to having only a small room was a big difference. Clouds were a lot better than mattresses as well (or so she had been told.) "Why have ya been having trouble sleeping?" "Well, springs are hard and annoying," she replied. Applejack was pretty confused. "But ya fell asleep in tress before..." Dash shrugged. "I just like sleeping in certain places, but it wouldn't really be much of a problem if that evil rooster didn't wake me up in the morning." Applejack chucked at that. "’Evil Rooster’, huh?" Rainbow Dash nodded her head, with the most serious expression on her face she answered "Yeah I swear that thing caws every morning just to annoy me, at least I can turn off my alarm clock. I hate that thing." Laughing a little, a thought struck Applejack. "You don't regret your decision, do you?" Seeing Applejack's somber face, she quickly said "Of course not! Now I get to live with one of the coolest mares I know." She added "plus, you get to see my awesomeness every day, free of charge!" Applejack was touched; Rainbow Dash didn't like things if they were not cool or awesome enough for her. "So ya really like living on the farm, instead of in the air?" Rainbow Dash smiled. "It was a change, but I used to get kind of lonely." Applejack leaned over and gave her friend a big hug "It means a lot to hear that from ya." Rainbow Dash returned the hug eagerly. Both were glad that it was dark because it hid their bright red faces, They just enjoyed the others embrace for a couple more moments before breaking apart and rolling to their original positions. Rainbow Dash wanted to tell Applejack, but if she had just then the moment they had shared would have been less special. But this whole sleepover had helped her decide something. With a small grin on her face she started to outline a plan. Tomorrow, I tell her. That was her last thought before finally drifting off to sleep, Applejack's tail unintentionally intertwining with Dash's as the two mares slept. > Camping's Fun Pt.1 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The warm sunlight filtered through the half-closed curtains as the sound of birds chirping hit Applejack's ears. I don't want to get up yet, she thought, burying her face deeper into her pillow. Wow, Twilight's got a comfy bed. It’s so soft. Still half asleep, Applejack noticed something strange about the bed, like it was breathing. Getting confused, Applejack sleepily opened her eyes to find out what was going on. She looked down to see Rainbow Dash lightly snoring with her head resting on Applejack's stomach. Both of the mares’ hind legs were intertwined. While sleeping, she had managed to wrap her forelegs around Dash as well. How am I gonna get out of this? Looking over at Twilight, Applejack was glad to see that she was still asleep. Applejack lifted her forelegs away from the sleeping mare, while managing to pull her hind legs away from Rainbow's. Now how do I get her head off of me without waking her up? Well, I can't really think of a way. She lied back down and tried to sleep for a little while longer. Besides, she thought, I don't mind anyways. Closing her eyes, Applejack didn't see Rainbow Dash give a small grin. --- A few days had passed since the sleepover, and since then Rainbow Dash had been formulating a plan. She asked herself the question soon afterwards, how do I tell her? Being a go-big-or-go-home type of pony, Dash decided that some time alone with Applejack would be the perfect opportunity. Rainbow Dash looked down from the apple tree she had perched on, and saw Applebloom and the other Cutie Mark Crusaders setting up a tent in the middle of the orchard. ”Heh, I bet they're trying to get a camping Cutie Mark or something.” This reminded her of the time she went camping with them plus Rarity, and...Applejack! Yes! I know exactly what to do. Laughing, Rainbow Dash rocketed off of the tree branch and flew in the direction of the farm house. All I need to do is get everything set up and surprise Applejack! Doing a back-flip in midair, she couldn't resist shouting, "This is going to be SO awesome!!" Corkscrewing through the air, she stopped when a small problem entered her head. I sold my tent for the new Daring Do book didn't I? --- Applejack slammed her hind legs into the trunk of the tree with all the strength she could muster. Every single one of the bright red apples fell from the tree. Applejack wiped some sweat from her forehead and sat under the shade of a nearby tree. Only a few more left and then I have a free day tomorrow. Hmm…I wonder what I should do? Apple-bucking demanded quite a lot of her attention, so she was usually bored when it came to relaxing. She was interrupted by a stifled giggle from behind her. Turning around, she saw Rainbow Dash trying not to laugh. "What’s so funny sugarcube?" Applejack glanced around herself and didn't see anything funny. Rainbow Dash calmed down a little and said, "I just thought I'd never see the day that Applejack would laze around instead of working." "Ah was just taking a small break." Blushing a little as she said so. "Hey, aren't ya supposed to be working too?" Applejack said in an accusatory voice. "No, actually Big Mac gave me and you the weekend off." Smiling, she added, "And I know exactly what we’re gonna do. We’re going-" "Wait a minute" Applejack interrupted, "Ah can't leave for two days! Who will help out here?!" Rainbow Dash smirked. "AJ, I got it all figured out. Thanks to my help, we’re ahead of schedule. Big Mac can buck some apples and help out with all the other things. He's cool with it." Seeing that Applejack was not swayed, she decided to explain what they were going to be doing. "Alright, I was gonna make it more of a surprise, but you and me are going camping!" Rainbow Dash said dramatically while pointing at mountains in the distance. "...Camping...just you and me?" Applejack deadpanned. Actually, that's not a bad idea. Some alone time with her would be a good opportunity...for what? I can't just tell her! She lives in my house! Everything would be weird and awkward! She was snapped out of her mini panic by Dash. "Hello? Equestria to AJ? Are you even listening?" She waved a hoof in front of Applejack's face. "Uh...yeah RD, Ah was just thinking. But a camping trip with you sounds great!" Looking at the Ponyville Mountains, "Ah take it that's where we'll be camping?" Rainbow Dash nodded. "Yeah, I got this awesome spot up there! Okay, go pack whatever you need, we’re leaving in 20 minutes!" "Wait! What!?!?" Applejack shouted. Rainbow Dash laughed, and started running to the farmhouse. She yelled behind her, "C'mon slowpoke!" Applejack glared at Rainbow and muttered, "It is on..." before breaking into a sprint trying to catch up with the pegasus. --- The sun was in the middle of the sky by the time the two mares got to their camping spot. Applejack had to hand it to Rainbow Dash, she had picked an amazing spot. It was a small clearing near the top of the mountain. The view stretched on for miles.Plus, there was a nice pond where they could go swimming. "Wow Dash, this is beautiful..." Applejack trailed off, looking down at Ponyville in the distance. "It sure is." Rainbow Dash replied, but she wasn't talking about the scenery. "Okay, I can set up the tent if you'll gather some fire-wood." "Okay, Ah'll be right back RD." Walking into the woods, she smiled; this was going to be fun. After gathering enough sticks to keep a good fire burning for hours, she returned to see that Rainbow had actually done a great job. The tent was set up and there was a log for them to sit on. Rainbow Dash was putting some rocks in a circle for the fire pit. Noticing Applejack, she put the last rock in place. "Okay AJ, put the branches right here." Looking at the sky, she noticed the sun was about to set. "We should start it now; it gets pretty cold this time of year." Applejack nodded, and sat down next to Dash on the log after starting the fire. "How about some marshmallows?" --- "So then Ah had to take her to the hospital, but she was okay." Applejack finished telling Rainbow Dash the story of one of Applebloom’s crusading attempts gone horribly wrong. By now the sun had set and moon was shining brightly overhead. "How did she convince that guy to sell her a hang-glider?!?" Rainbow laughed loudly. "That filly is the biggest trouble-maker of all time!" Applejack started to laugh as well. Applejack grinned. "Ya know, I think she wants to be like you." Seeing Dash's surprised face, she nodded. "Have ya noticed she calls you her sister sometimes? You’re like family now." Dash beamed. "Wow...I didn't think she liked me that much." It was Applejack's turn to be surprised "Why? What’s there not to like about ya? Yer nice, loyal, athletic, pretty..." She trailed of when she noticed Dash staring at her. Blushing, she coughed. "Umm...maybe I went a little overboard...hehehe." "Do you really mean all of that?" Dash looked at Applejack's face slightly illuminated by the flickering flames. Her cheeks were bright red and she was trying to cover her eyes with her Stetson. "Of course Ah do, but-" She was interrupted when she felt somepony's lips on her own. At first her eyes rocketed open, and her face became two shades darker than Big Macintosh’s coat. After the initial shock, she closed her eyes and returned the kiss, much to Rainbow Dash's pleasure. Everything around them faded and all that mattered was Dash's lips against her own. After what could have been minutes, or hours, they broke apart and looked away from each other. Rainbow Dash started stammering almost as fast as Pinkie Pie. "I'm sorry; I know that you probably hate me now. I don't blame you if you don't want to see me ever again. I'm sorry." She flew into the tent and zipped it up, leaving a shocked Applejack behind. Rainbow Dash climbed inside her sleeping bag and curled into a ball. I just lost a best friend, this caused her to tear up a little. Her ears drooped when she heard the door to the tent being unzipped. "If you want, I can go live with somepony else..." There was no answer, only hoof-steps. She heard Applejack finally say something. "Sugarcube, come out. I'm not mad." Rainbow Dash crawled out of the sleeping bag. Her eyes had some tears in them. Applejack sat down next to Rainbow Dash and gave her a hug. "Ah could never hate ya RD." Rainbow Dash let out a relieved sigh. "Thanks AJ, you’re the best. Now let’s put this behind us so everything can go back to normal." She smiled, but her shimmering eyes betrayed her. Applejack frowned. "But I don't want to put this behind us." It was Dash's turn to be surprised. "But Applej-" This time it was Applejack who kissed Rainbow Dash. She didn't hesitate to return it. She leaned into the kiss, pressing back tentatively. Before either of them wanted to end it they broke apart. Rainbow Dash looked at Applejack with hopeful eyes. "Please tell me this means what I think it means." Applejack chuckled. "Ah like ya too Dashie. A lot..." She trailed off, twirling her hooves. Should I? "Applejack, I was wondering...could I use you as a pillow again?" Oh dear Celestia why did I say that!? Applejack smirked. "Ya saying ya want to sleep with me?" Dash's reaction was priceless. "Wha-no, I mean yes-what no! Not like that." Her eyes went wide and her face was a deep shade of red. Unable to contain laughter any longer, Applejack burst into a fit of giggles. "Ya should have seen the look on your face!" "That wasn't funny AJ!" Rainbow looked away from Applejack. Applejack lied down on her sleeping bag. "Well what are ya waiting for?" With a cautious gaze Dash replied, "Are you sure?" Applejack grinned rolling her eyes. "Yes, ya can use me for a pillow." Rainbow Dash climbed into the sleeping bag and put her head on Applejack’s stomach before yawning. "Goodnight AJ." Dash sighed. "Night Sugarcube." She replied sleepily. Rainbow Dash grinned and closed her eyes, but Applejack already asleep. Best camping trip ever! she thought before yawning and falling into the most comfortable sleep she had ever had.
