> Who We Are > by Claudia Donovan > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Pinkie Pie Wake-Up Call - Party (Day 1) > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "SURPRISE!!!" Ugh, by Luna, can't a filly get some shut eye? "Wake up wake up! I can't make your birthday the very best most super duper birthday ever if you're sleeping silly!" No, apparently a filly cannot get some sleep. But I get ahead of myself. My name is Pumpkin Cake, and this is my story about discovering who I am, and my brother doing the same. My brother is my twin, and his name is Pound Cake. Let me tell you a little about us. I am a unicorn with an olive coat, orange mane and tail, and blue eyes. Pound has a tan coat, and his mane, tail, and eyes are all brown. He is a pegasus colt. Our parents are Mrs Cup Cake, and Mr Carrot Cake (of course we call them mom and daddy) and they own Sugarcube Corner. Pinkie Pie is practically our big sister. It is a blessing and a curse. Today it feels cursey. Pinkie, still yammering on, "...and then we'll have cake and-" "Pinkie." I interrupt her. "Yeah Pumpkin?" "Please stop talking." At this I roll over and snuggle back into bed. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ "Happy birthday dearies!" calls mom as Pound and I make a bee-line for the pancakes, waffles, and assorted other breakfast foods on the table. "Thanks mom!" Pound says, tearing into a doughnut with icing and sprinkles. "This looks delicious mom, you and daddy have really outdone yourselves!" I say, levitating some pancakes onto my plate, then pouring maple syrup all over them. I take a bite, then rapidly devour the rest. Daddy knows his pancakes. "Oh of course my little ponies! Why don't you go out into town for the day since your party isn't until tonight? We'll give you ten bits each, just be back before dark!" "Whoa, thanks mom!" Pound replies, sprinkles somehow in his mane from that doughnut. "Pound, before we go would you wipe that dougnut off of your face?" "I have no idea what you're talking about." Pound says, using his tounge to wash his face. "Eww! Spike cannot be trusted alone with you!" "Hey Pumpkin! Hey Pound!" Scootaloo greets us as we step out of Sugarcube Corner. Even though the Crusaders are five years older than us, they are some of our best friends. "Hey Scoots, Sweetie, Bloom!" I reply, smiling. "Happy birthday you two! Ah'm sure excited for your party tonight!" says Apple Bloom. "Yeah! I'm gonna sing for the party, and I can't wait!" Sweetie Belle sings for lots of events in Ponyville, now that she has realized her musical talent, proven by the musical notes on her flank. Scootaloo has a rose with a musical score wrapped around it for a cutie mark and Apple Bloom's is an apple-shaped pin cushion. "Scootaloo, wanna race around Ponyville?!" Pound challenges, bored already. "You're on squirt!" she jets off, with Pound just behind her. "Geez, are all pegasi that impatient?" "All the ones I know. Hey, you wanna come by Carousel Boutique and see what my sister has been working on?" Sweetie says, turning towards the shop. "Yeah, come see what Ah've been working on!" Apple Bloom has become Rarity's apprentice, considering her sewing skills. "I guess, seeing as those two won't be back until... Yeah we have time." I conclude, following the older fillies. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ "Welcome to Carousel Boutique, where every garment is chic, unique and magnifique!" "Hey Rarity! Ah wanted to show Pumpkin Cake the new dress Ah've been working on." "Oh, hello darling! Happy birthday!" Rarity's smile fades a bit, "Your brother isn't here is he?" she asks warily. "Nope, he wouldn't be caught dead in here if he could help it!" Last time Pound was at Carousel Boutique... In the past, with the Boutique on fire in the background... "I swear Mayor Mare, I didn't put the curtains in the sewing machine, so the curtains knocking over the lantern and setting the place on fire was not my fault!" Now... We all shudder at the thought, Rarity most of all. "And that is why this is a shop for dresses. Exclusively. Forever." she says firmly. "But anyway, c'mon Pumpkin! Look at this outfit Apple Bloom is making!" Sweetie Belle dashes into the other room, impatient. Apple Bloom and I follow to a room that looks like an apple-scented fabric explosion. "Whoa, and mom says my room is messy?" I say, amazed at the sheer amount of cloth in the room, it rivals the confetti in Pinkie's room. "Yeah, yeah," Apple Bloom rolls her eyes, "But look at this dress Ah made for yah!" Apple Bloom pulls a sheet off a dress form, revealing a dress that looks like ice cream! It is cream colored at the bottom, with a color like dark chocolate over the back, and many brightly colored cloth bits sewn on the chocolatey colored part. Best of all is the bow for my mane, in the center is what looks like a big cherry! "I... I..." "Ya don't lahk it?" Apple Bloom asks, disappointed. I have no way to express my joy in words, so I glomp Bloom. "Ya love it! Oh Ah'm glad! Ah was gonna give it to yah at the party, but Ah thought maybe you'd wanna wear it to the party!" "THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!" I squeal, hugging Apple Bloom even tighter. "If... yah... wouldn't... mind... please... lemme go..." Oops! I release, and Apple Bloom takes a deep breath. "Ah love your hugs, but not when Ah can't breath." she says with a slight laugh. "Sorry 'bout that Apple Bloom!" "Its fine." "Oh would you try the dress on?!" Sweetie Belle exclaims, having not said a word since she led us into the room. By Celestia that pony is impatient! But I try the dress on, and swap the ribbon in my hair for the cherry bow. "This is so comfy! I love it!" I exclaim, grinning. "How do I look?" "Ah think yah look great!" "Totally! I really like the cherry bow!" "Why you look simply divine darling!" Rarity says, stepping into the room. "Do be careful when Pinkie sees it dear, she might think it's really ice cream!" she says it with a laugh, but I saw Pinkie try to eat her own mane just yesterday, so I wouldn't put dress eating past my 'sister'. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Now the rest of the day went on kinda boring, so I won't make you endure that. I'm not cruel, so I'll skip to about an hour before the party, just after Scoots and my brother joined back up with me, Bloom and Sweetie. "So Scootaloo was like, 'told you I'd win' an- where'd ya get the dress Pumpkin? You look like ice cream!" Boys, oblivious as ever, he took until now to notice the fact that I am wearing a dress. "I know Pound. It's supposed to look like ice cream." "Ah designed it mahself!" Apple Bloom exclaims, grinning. "OOH GIANT ICE CREAM!!!" cue Pinkie ambush. "AHH!!!" the Crusaders all yell, while Pound and I look on. You live with Pinkie Pie, you learn to not be surprised by her. The Crusaders however, are all vulnerable to Pinkie pop-ups. However, I am scared this time... "Pinkie DO! NOT! EAT ME!!! I'm not made of ice cream! I'm wearing a dress!" I brace for impact. "Ooh what a cool dress Pumpkin Cake! Get it cool? Because ice cream! And oh my gosh if you spill ice cream on it no one will even know and you won't even need to change and that's so fun! And I'm sorry I almost tried to eat you but it looks so real and now I need ice cream, I'm going to Bon Bon's see you later byeeee!!!" Pinkie says all in one breath, and bounces off happily. "What just happened?" Sweetie Belle asks, rattled. "I think we were just assaulted. Verbally assaulted." Scootaloo states, shaking her head, trying to clear out all the babble. "Let's just go back to Sugarcube Corner." I say, working on not getting trapped in the snare that is Pinkie talk. Thinking about it NEVER ends well. It just doesn't. "Oh look, it's the Crusade-dorks!" Ugh, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. Why must they always come after us and our friends? "Wow Diamond Tiara, it looks like some little filly is having trouble getting the food into her mouth." Silver Spoon sneers. "I dunno Silver Spoon, looks like an improvement to me." Tiara replies, and she and Spoon laugh. "What do you want?" Pound snaps, eager to get them away. "Oh, we don't want anything, but maybe you two do. If I were you I'd hope that this is the year." Diamond tells him. "The year for what?" I ask, in spite of myself. "The year you find out who your real parents are, of course! I mean, it must be awful knowing you're adopted and not knowing who your real parents are." explains Silver Spoon, feigning sadness. "That's stupid. We aren't adopted!" Pound says, narrowing his eyes slightly. "Of course you are, everypony knows two earth ponies can't have a pegasus and a unicorn!" Diamond laughs, and turns to Silver. "Come on Silver Spoon, let's leave these two foals to work through their denial." They leave, with Pound and I just staring at each other. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ "Real parents? Adopted? What... Pumpkin are we... do you think they..." Pound looks at me miserably, wishing for some sort of answer. "I don't know, but we're gonna find out bro. I promise!" I say, determined. I hate to think those two fillies could be right, but they have a point. Anyway, the... um, the party. At the party... "Happy happy birthday to you and you today!..." Hmm, skipping that. One musical number later... "So Surprise and I got help from Twilight and Rainbow Dash--" "--And Dash got the clouds and Twilight cast a spell on them--" "--And now we have..." "CHOCOLATE MILK RAIN CLOUDS!!!" Pinkie and Surprise yell together, sharing their expression of wide-eyed joy. "That explains so much. Like why you're both covered in chocolate. Why did you make chocolate rain?" I ask, the two frizzy-haired party ponies both soaked with chocolate milk. "I dunno! It was fun!" That is what happens when Surprise drops by to visit our 'sister'. Nothing makes any sense at all but it is amusing. Or horrifying. It varies. In the past, all of Ponyville floating far above the ground with the help of balloons... "And what exactly made you two think tying dozens of super helium filled balloons to everything would turn out well?" Mayor Mare interrogates the two party ponies. "I dunno! It was fun!" Pinkie. "Do you want me and the other Wonderbolts to get it back down?" Surprise. End flashback... So this seems like a milder visit. Don't question it. Just don't do it. The rest of the party was actually pretty dull. I won't bore you. I don't hate you. That night, after the party... "Daddy, are we adopted?" "What?!" And suddenly there is soda in my face. "Where would you get that idea?!" Mom demands, shocked. "Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara." Pound. "Why, those fillies are not very nice at all. Don't listen to them, dearies!" Mom. "You aren't adopted, I was there when you were born, right Cup?" "You were there, then you fainted, then you came to again." Mom says, and daddy becomes very embarrassed very quickly. And his face turns a lovely shade of red. "Well, if we aren't adopted, why aren't we Earth ponies?" I ask, but no one has an answer. > An apology to my readers > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I regret to inform, I am suffering from writer's block, and I am unable to think on how to continue this story. That is not to say I don't have a few ideas, but I am unsure of how to articulate them into words. I apologize to all you readers, but I feel that if I am to write a good story I will have to put this on a hiatus. I know it's a very new story, that it shouldn't be on hiatus with only one chapter, but I have to. I am so sorry, and I promise I will come back to this as soon as I can, but I cannot make any promises about when. Writing is very difficult for me, I don't think in words, I think in pictures. I am so sorry everypony, but in the nearly two months since my last update, I have been trying and failing to come up with a second chapter of any kind of quality. I didn't even send the chapter starts I tried to my prereader, because I would get about two paragraphs in, realize it was awful, and scrap it. I really hate to do this, but I swear this story will be continued at some point. But for now, I must put it on hold. ~Claudia Donovan
