> Past & Future > by Quillion9000 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Two New Students > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hoenn: Ever Grande A tall, thin boy smiled slightly at the letter he’d received. He had slightly tanned skin and grey-blue eyes. His attire consisted of a black/orange collared short sleeved shirt, dark gray pants, and orange slip on shoes. He also wore a green backpack, orange fingerless gloves, and a green headband. He currently sat within the main stadium of Ever Grande where their regional conference was held. Aside from himself, a Absol, and a Metagross, the place was empty. He read the letter. Hey Brendan, It’s been a while… I know you and May said we were good, but I want to say, this last time, that I’m sorry. I made mistakes, refused to listen, and blew up on you both when you never deserved it. If only I had listened at times, my Hoenn journey probably wouldn’t have ended like it did. Now, I’m going to try again, here in Paldea. This time, I’ll be the trainer I should have from the start. One day, I hope to become a champion like you have. When that day comes, let’s have a proper battle. Signed, Flash Sentry P.S. If Absol and Metagross are still with you, continue to encourage them to find a better trainer. Bendan leaned back before glancing at the two pokemon. “You two want a different trainer yet?” Both looked at the young champion offended. “Meta!” “Sol!” “Figured, you’re still loyal to him.” Branden chuckled softly. “Still, he did ask.” He then sighed. “Flash seems to be doing better, but he’s hung up on the past. If only there was…” Suddenly, he stood. “That’s it!” He pulled out his Rotom Phone and dialed a number. “Hello?” “Professor Birch, I need a favor…” Brendan began. Cabo Poco: Sentry Residence, Morning… A teenage boy with blue hair and matching eyes sat atop his bed playing his red and silver guitar. His present attire consisted of the spring uniform for his new school, Uva Academy, consisting of a long-sleeved white top and purple pants with black suspenders. His uniform’s brown loafers and bucket hat were nearby. From what he understood, there was customization allowed, but he didn’t really have anything to substitute them with. He also had a blue backpack, slung across a chair, which his mom gifted him. His room held a rather impressive TV with a Nintendo Switch, a few books on pokemon, a wardrobe, and a desk. Eventually, he was done playing and stood before looking at said desk. There sat a framed photo of himself smiling along with a Torchic. An empty pokeball had been placed just before the picture. A sad look graced his features before he shook his head to collect himself. He walked down the stairs and into the living room, which held a TV of its own, two blue couches, one yellow chair, and a coffee table. His eyes quickly shifted to the kitchen where his mother, Somnambula, seemed to be finishing dishes. She had long cyan hair in a pony tail and blue-violet eyes. She wore tan pants, a long blue top, and an apron. The guy wandered on over which his mother immediately took note of. “Good morning, Flash.” Somnambula greeted, with a smile. “I assumed when I heard your guitar stop that you would be coming down.” She dried her hands before turning to him. “Oh, don’t you look handsome in your uniform.” Flash blushed and looked down like how any son typically would when your parent made comments like those. “It’s good to see you’re prepared for your first day.” Somnambula continued. “While I am excited for you, it’d be best to cool your jets before you go racing off to school. I was contacted and told you should wait here a little longer.” “Oh really?” Flash asked. “Any reason why?” “Apparently, there’s something important for your first day that hasn’t arrived yet.” Somnambula informed before someone rang their doorbell. “Maybe that’s it now. Flash, would you mind answering the door?” “Yeah, no problem.” Flash answered as he moved over there. Before he could answer, an old man with white hair, goatee, and glasses entered the house. He wore a purple blazer with pokeballs on it, a black shirt, and white pants with matching shoes. He hadn’t come alone as a young boy was accompanying him. This boy had a green mohawk, matching eyes, and wore the same uniform as Flash; however, he seemed to have chosen to forgo the hat. He glanced at Flash briefly before ultimately turning his attention to observe the room. “Do forgive the intrusion.” The man stated. “You are…Master Sentry, yes?” Flash nodded. “Yep, that’s my last name.” “Excellent.” The man smiled. “Then, on behalf of Uva academy, I must apologize for my late arrival with your enrollment documents. Ah, also for delaying an introduction of myself to boot. I am the director of Uva Academy. You may call me Mr. Clavell while the young man accompanying me is another who enrolls today, Spike Armor.” “The director!?” Somnambula joined them. “You came in person to help my son?” “Well, I am responsible for the entire academy, and that includes any failings on its part.” He approached. “So, here are the documents that should have already been delivered to you.” Somnambula accepted them before shaking her head. “Goodness, you really needn’t have, but since you’ve come all this way, can I at least offer you two a cup of tea?” “Ah, no need to trouble yourself.” Clavell answered. “No thank you, ma’am.” Spike added. “Flash, I have a thing or two I’d like to discuss briefly with the director here.” Somnambula stated. “Why don’t you head to your room and finish getting ready.” “Right, I’ll get it done mom.” Flash answered before taking his leave. Flash climbed the stairs and entered his room. There, he slipped on the brown loafers and hat before attaching his guitar to his backpack. Then, he threw that on before taking one, last look at his room. He couldn’t help but linger on the photo for a bit before taking his leave. It was a bit surreal that this was even happening right now, but he felt fortunate Uva academy took students of all ages. It gave him this opportunity to start fresh. He walked down the stairs and entered the living room. “Oh, just look at you!” His mother had noticed him and stood before Clavell and Spike followed. “All ready for your first day!” “Yes, the uniform of our storied academy suits you well indeed.” Clavell chimed in. “Mr. Clavell, does this mean you’ll finally let me see the pokemon?” Spike asked, clearly anxious yet trying to maintain his cool. “Ah, of course.” Clavell seemed to have been reminded of this. “I had nearly forgotten, Master Armor. Though, the Sentry’s living room is hardly the place for it. Please, follow me outside everyone.” Spike eagerly did while Flash shared a look with his mom before they joined the pair. Caba Poco Upon exiting the house, Flash and Somnambula joined Spike in standing across from Clavell. “Right then, dear pokemon.” He produced and threw three pokeballs. “Time to come out.” A Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, the three starters of Paldea, appeared. “Wow, they’re all cool!” Spike marveled as he crouched before the pokemon. “We provide each student entering the academy a pokemon of their own.” Clavell informed. “You two are in luck as the pokemon I have for you are Palde’s official starters. One of these three shall be a partner to each of you. Sprigatito, the grass cat pokemon.” She purred. “Fuecoco, the fire croc pokemon.” He gave a goofy grin. “Lastly is Quaxly, the duckling pokemon.” He waved his head a bit. “They’re all good company. Why, they even usually refuse to leave my side.” Sprigatito and Fuecoco ended up approaching Spike while Quaxly gravitated to Flash. The former watched as the two pokemon ended up running around him while the latter bent down and ran his hand along the water type with a small smile. “Oh, it would appear these three are more interested in you two than familiar, old me.” Clavell smiled. “I do wish I could stay to see which one each of your picks, but I must be off to my next home visit.” He turned to the large house in the distance. “I’ll be just down the road, at the large house over there. Take your time before coming to find me with your decision. Now, if you’ll excuse me.” He walked off. “Until next we meet.” “What a mannerly fellow that director of yours is.” Somnambula addressed Flash drawing his attention. “These three are lovely, but it would appear you need to choose just one, right?” She shook her head. “Certainly not an easy choice. Especially since this young man here is expected to pick one from among them. Well Flash, why don’t you take this opportunity to walk with them and your fellow classmate? It would be good for you to get to know them all.” Flash looked from the pokemon to the younger boy before shrugging. “Sure, why not?” “Oh, before you set off, I got you a little something more to celebrate today than that backpack.” Somnambula presented him with a new Rotom Phone. “Take it with you if you’re going out.” “Thanks mom.” Flash hugged her before whispering in her ear. “For everything.” Somnambula held her boy tightly. After everything that happened last time she let him go, she really didn’t want that kind of hurt to befall him again. She ultimately sighed knowing that keeping him home wouldn’t help him grow past it any longer. “Remember, if anything becomes too overwhelming for you, you’ll always be welcome to return here, day or night.” Somnambula whispered. While Flash did want to do this, some small part of him didn’t want to even risk falling into past mistakes. Ultimately, he was the one to part from his mother before walking up to Spike. “Alright, let’s take a stroll down to that house there with them.” Flash kind of brushed past Spike without meaning to. “Should be enough time to decide which one we want.” “This guy’s a little cold.” Spike thought. Ultimately, they were expected to head that way anyways. The younger guy figured he might as well tag along. It helped that Flash at least didn’t seem like a bad guy, from what he could tell. As they moved out, the three starters moved with them along the path. “So, are you from Paldea?” Spike broached as they walked. “Nah, mom and I moved here recently.” Flash responded. “I was actually born in Hoenn.” “Oh, that’s cool.” Spike stated. “I was born in Paldea, and I think it’s a great region. I take it you don’t know your neighbor?” “First thing I learned was that they’re apparently at the academy with us.” Flash responded, referring to what he literally just learned. “Why, you know something?” “I don’t think you’d find anyone in Paldea who doesn’t know Nemona.” Spike responded. “Since you don’t, I won’t spoil much beyond that.” Flash did raise an eyebrow at that before deciding not to press it. As the pair continued along the path, the starters moved about, not too far from them, investigating things. Considering Flash didn’t seem much for conversation, Spike took to observing them. He smiled as the pokemon moved about with such energy and a willingness to explore. While Flash now did the same, he was also thinking critically about which pokemon he’d take. He knew, boy did he know, just how critical this decision was. Eventually, the group climbed some stairs and entered the gated yard of the larger house. Once there, the starters broke off. Quaxly went to the nearby water source, Sprigatito smelt some flowers, and Fuecoco was going to eat an orange. He sneezed letting of an ember which burnt it. A moderately tall girl bent down to run her hand along the fire croc. She had long black hair, with a green hair streak, tied in a ponytail, orange eyes, and several freckles. She wore their school uniform with black leggings, a pair of red/white sneakers, and a black/red wrist glove. “Do any of these pokemon belong to the two of you?” The girl, Nemona, asked as she stood. She, Clavell, and the starters all gravitated towards the boys. “Not quite.” Clavell answered for them. “Masters Armor and Sentry have yet to make their choice, you see.” The starters moved to stand before them with Fuecoco happily eating his now burnt orange. “I do wonder, what is their choice?” “Buenas!” Nemona greeted. “I haven’t met either of you, have I?” “I do know who you are, but we haven’t actually met.” Spike responded. “I don’t even know that much.” Flash shrugged. “Mom and I moved in up the road not long ago.” “Ah, so you two must be the new students.” Nemona nodded in understanding. “Well, I’m always interested in meeting some newbies, but I’ll admit I’ve been dying to learn more about the guy from Hoenn.” “Well, my name’s Spike Armor.” Spike greeted. “Flash Sentry.” Flash stated simply. “I’m Nemona.” Nemona introduced. “Normally, I live in the school dorms, but home is here. What do you say, want to be friends?” “Sure, can never have enough friends.” Spike declared, happily. “Alright, love the enthusiasm!” Nemona then looked to Flash expectantly. “These two are a little weird.” Flash thought. “I don’t go calling people friend that fast.” “Huh?” Nemona was shocked. “Did I come off too strong?” “Yes, well.” Clavell cleared his throat. “Miss Nemona here is the student body president and a champion ranked trainer.” “She’s a champion like Brendan!?” Flash thought, stunned. “I absolutely love pokemon battling!” Nemona declared passionately. “In fact, I want to battle both of you, right now! One right after the other!” “Easy now.” Clavell chuckled. “You three will be in the same class, so there’ll be plenty of opportunities to battle. Naturally, plenty of chances for you to get to know one another. For now, have you two decided which pokemon you would like?” “Oh, would it be alright if I go first!?” Spike exclaimed excitedly. Flash shrugged. “Eh, go ahead.” He was confident the guy hadn’t had his eye on the pokemon he wanted anyways. Spike grinned as he ran right up to and crouched before the fire croc. “Fuecoco is my choice!” “Fue!” Fuecoco declared excitedly, leaping into his new friend’s arms. “You and me Fuecoco.” Spike stood and grinned. “We’ll be a perfect team.” He then managed to hold his new pokemon in one arm before fishing out his Rotom Phone, which had a purple case, and scanned him: Fuecoco, the Fire Croc Pokémon. A Fire type. The fire energy from its body makes the flame on its head ripple like waves. When its emotions run hot, the flames grow bigger accordingly. Ability: Blaze Gender: Male Current Moves: Ember, Leer, Tackle “Ah yes, you two seem to have taken an immediate shine to one another.” Clavell then looked to Flash. “Master Sentry?” Flash approached his pick being Quaxly before kneeling in front of him. “I’m aiming to become strong Quaxly, so if that’s something you’d want, I’d be glad to accept you.” Quaxly observed him for a few moments before happily leaping atop his shoulder. “Quax!” “Alright, you’re my pokemon.” Flash stated. He then got out his Rotom Phone to scan him: Quaxly, the Duckling Pokemon. A Water type. This Pokémon migrated to Paldea from distant lands long ago. Its strong legs let it easily swim around in even fast-flowing rivers. Ability: Torrent Gender: Male Current Moves: Growl, Pound, Water Gun “Quaxly seems to have taken a liking to you, Master Sentry.” Clavell nodded as he tossed the respective pokeballs to their owners. “Both of you, do raise your pokemon with love and care.” “I will.” Spike declared. Flash looked at his new pokemon firmly. “This time, I’ll make sure of it.” Both returned their new pokemon while the grass type looked on sadly at being left out. “You each will make great combos with your new pokemon!” Nemona declared excitedly before looking to the director. “Could I take Sprigatito, Director Clavell?” Sprigatito perked up at that. “Oh, didn’t you receive a pokemon upon entering the academy?” Clavell asked. “No, I didn’t.” Nemona shook her head. “I had other pokemon I was focused on raising at the time, but now I want to raise up a whole new team alongside these two.” “Hm, it could be a rather splendid idea.” Clavell took out and tossed the last pokeball to her. “If you wish to raise Sprigatito, then I shall permit it.” “Yesss!” Nemona cheered before turning to the remaining starter. “Alright, we’re a team from here on out, Sprigatito!” “Sprig!” Sprigatito celebrated by excitedly running circles around her new trainer. As the pokemon ran, Nemona got out her Rotom Phone to scan her: Sprigatito, the Grass Cat Pokémon. A Grass type. With every step it takes, it releases a sweet scent, enchanting those nearby. Ability: Overgrow Gender: Female Current Moves: Leafage, Scratch, Tail Whip Nemona turned to the boys before focusing solely on Spike. “Alright, with a new pokemon in hand, I challenge you to a battle.” “You’re on!” Spike returned excitedly. “Awesome!” Nemona declared. “I’ll be awaiting down the beach, so come see me when you’re ready.” She then ran off prompting Clavell to turn to the boys. “As you may have noticed, Miss Nemona is a tad overly fond of pokemon battles.” “No kidding.” Flash muttered. “I think it’s great.” Spike took off. “Time to have my first battle!” “I see he’s just as excitable.” Clavell chuckled. “What do you say, Master Sentry? Care to watch the battle with me?” “Sure, why not.” Flash shrugged and they started after the pair. “If nothing else, I’d like to see how a champion battles.” Beach Spike slowed upon seeing an actual battlefield down here. “Whoa, that’s so cool!” “If you have pokemon by your side so much becomes possible.” Nemona declared upon noticing him. “As trainers, we can push what is possible all the further through training. What do you say, Spike? Ready to battle?” “You bet.” Spike took to the trainer box across from her. “Perfecto!” Nemona declared. “I’m so excited for this battle that I think I’ll use…” “Is she about to use her champion team!?” Spike thought, wide eyed. “I’m not nearly delusional enough to think my newly acquired Fuecoco could match that!” “Miss Nemona.” Clavell pulled up with Flash. “I trust you remember that this is Master Armor’s first time wielding a pokemon?” “Heh, whoops…” Nemona chuckled nervously. “Good call, director. I was about to call on one of my usual partners right off the bat.” She turned to Spike. “That would have defeated the purpose of using a new team, so I’ll go with my new buddy instead.” “I would certainly appreciate it.” Spike thought. “C’mon Spike!” Nemona suddenly declared. “Let’s have a fruitful match! Battle, Sprigatito!” “Right, Nemona.” Spike grasped his pokeball. “Go, Fuecoco!” The two starters appeared. Flash walked up to stand beside the director. “This should be interesting.” Spike vs Nemona “Alright, let’s start off with an ember.” Spike ordered. “Sprigatito, dodge and use tail whip.” Nemona commanded. Fuecoco attempted to land the small sphere of fire, but Sprigatito lunged to the right before rushing in. She went about brushing her tail over Fuecoco lowering his defense by one stage. “Now that there close, show off your tackle.” Spike commanded. “Use tail whip once more.” Nemona ordered. Sprigatito managed to brush her tail over Fuecoco lowering his defense by another stage before being tackled which knocked her back. “Now that they’re off kilter, ember.” Spike ordered. “Sprigatito, we need one more tail whip, and you’ll need to hang tight while you’re at it.” Nemona instructed. Sprigatito managed to just brush the tip of her tail against Fuecoco, lowering his defense a third stage, before taking ember head on which pushed her back. “What is Nemona doing?” Spike asked himself in confusion. “She hasn’t attacked…wait, is her pokemon glowing?” Sprigatito was glowing as her overgrow ability activated. She was close to fainting now, but her grass type moves would receive a serious boost in power. “Now, leafage!” Nemona ordered. “Fuecoco, ember!” Spike commanded. Sprigatito fired off a massive number of leaves at the same time Fuecoco shot his sphere of fire. Given the grass type’s ability, the leaves cut through the fire before smashing into Fuecoco full force. Given their increase, and his decreases, it was enough to knock him out. Beach “I lost?” Spike blinked in shock. “How?” “All three of our pokemon have abilities meant to power up moves of their type when near fainting.” Flash informed as he approached. “It’s a potent enough force to the point they can even overcome type advantage…depending on how strong the pokemon you’re battling is. Leafage is also a physical grass move hence Nemona sticking to tail whip which lowers a pokemon’s defense by one stage each time it lands. In short, she set up in a situation where you couldn’t have overwhelmed her, given the similar strength our pokemon should be at.” “Still, it was impressive for your first battle.” Nemona voiced as she approached. “I think you have the potential to be a strong trainer.” “Fuecoco and I will certainly work on it.” Spike crouched while pulling out a potion to restore his new partner. “Thanks for giving it a good try.” Fuecoco looked at him and grinned happily before he was returned. “Take a good rest.” “Now, you and I should battle.” Nemona zeroed in on Flash. “I want to see…” “Miss Nemona, I’d advise against it given your pokemon’s current state.” Clavell stepped in. “Sprigatito!” Nemona crouched before her new pokemon. “Oh, I’m so sorry.” She pulled out a potion and used it. “I got caught up in the excitement.” Sprigatito licked her chin, giving a clear sign she didn’t hold any ill will over it. “Aw, thank you.” “Good.” Clavell nodded. “Now, I was hoping I could put your new schoolmates under your wing, Miss Nemona. I’m sure both could learn a great deal from a champion-ranked trainer, such as yourself.” “You bet, sir!” Nemona answered cheerfully. “I was hopping you’d agree for there are still matters I must discuss with your parents.” Clavell smiled. “Please, see these two to the academy.” “Right.” Nemona nodded. “Leave it to me.” “Excellent, then they are in your hands.” Clavell stated before taking his leave. > Inlet Grotto > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Beach Clavell had just taken his leave of Flash, Nemona, and Spike. “Maybe I ought to make a little more time to work on my pokedex along with my battling…” Nemona mused before turning to the guys. “Speaking of pokedexes, have either of you caught wild pokemon before?” “Nope, can’t say I have.” Spike responded. “I’ve caught a few.” Flash alluded. “Then, we’ll take a little time on the way to the academy and see about showing Spike here how to catch a pokemon.” She took off. “Come on you two!” “That girl is quick.” Flash noted as she sprinted up her steps. “I think it’s safe to say he’s at least got experience in being a trainer.” Spike looked at Flash with a raised eye brow. “If that’s the case, why has he enrolled in Uva Academy?” On top of that, he could assume Nemona would be boxing whatever pokemon she’d trained prior, but Flash made no such allusions. It led him to wonder where any of these other pokemon the guy caught were. “Well, come on.” Flash started walking. “We’re under her care for now.” Spike didn’t get the sense the older guy would be open to such questions, so he simply followed. Caba Poco Upon reaching the steps down from the gate, both boys found Somnambula speaking with Nemona until she noticed her son. “Oh, Flash! I’ve heard Nemona here will be taking you to school.” “That’s right ma’am.” Nemona smiled. “You can leave him to me.” “How wonderful.” Somnambula smiled. “Flash could use some friends.” Said guy looked away since he honestly couldn’t refute her, given the last time, and she realized her mistake. “Oh, not that I’m…I mean…” “It’s fine…” Flash began to move past her while Spike and Nemona were staring between the two. “I’m just…going to get going with these two.” “Flash, wait.” Somnambula put a hand on her son’s shoulder. “I…I made you some lunch.” Flash turned to see a wrapped sandwich in her open hand before sighing and offering a genuine, small smile. “Thank you, mom.” He accepted and tucked it away in his bag. “Now, we should really set off.” He walked off with Nemona and Spike following. Somnambula stared at her son’s back and cupped her hands. “Hopefully, this will help my boy.” She still loved and supported Flash; however, Somnambula missed who he used to be. While she accepted that he likely would never be who he was before, she hoped sending him off like this would bring him closer to who she remembered rather than break him all over again. Poco Path As the trio left Cabo Poco, they could see various Lechonk, Tarountula, Fletchling, and Hoppip. Nemona broke the silence that had settled since they left her home. “So, your mom seems nice.” “Yeah, she’s great.” Flash agreed. “Want to talk about what happened back there?” Spike tried. “Hey Nemona, you’re the Paldean native.” Flash breezed past the topic, unwilling to address it. “Why don’t you handle helping Spike catch his first pokemon?” “Alright.” Nemona nodded, accepting his unwillingness to talk. “Well, this here is Poco Path. It’s the path that leads to adventure. Out here, you’ll see a larger number of wild pokemon than you would in any settlement. If you want to try and catch one, you’ll need pokeballs.” “Right.” Spike nodded, “I made sure to stock up before setting off with Clavell this morning.” As they were speaking, a Pawmi happened to grow curious enough to approach the trainers. Upon hearing the word ‘pokeball’ he happily moved into their path since this little electric type always wanted a trainer. “Paw!” Pawmi declared, grabbing their attention. “Looks like that little guy is raring for a battle.” Flash commented. “That will be the perfect first test.” Nemona declared. “Come on Flash, let’s get to the side while he tries to battle and catch that pokemon.” Flash followed her while Spike grabbed his starter’s pokeball. “Go, Fuecoco!” Pawmi sparked with electricity ready to prove himself worthy of being captured while Fuecoco was ready for another fun battle. Spike vs Pawmi “Alright, let’s try a status move of our own with leer.” Spike ordered. Pawmi had similar intentions as he let off a thunder wave at the same time Fuecoco leered. While the electric type’s defense did fall one stage, the fire type was paralyzed. Even though Spike hadn’t caught onto Nemona’s status moves, he at least knew what a status aliment was. “Now Fuecoco will be slower and there’s a chance he won’t be able to move.” Spike smiled. “A move like that just cinched the decision. I’m not doing this because they told me it’s a test. I want this Pawmi on my team.” Pawmi rushed in, primed to scratch the fire starter. “Fuecoco, dodge and use ember.” Spike commanded. Paralysis kept Fuecoco stationary as Pawmi scratched him dolling out some damage. He then sparked with electricity priming a thunder shock. “Use tackle.” Spike ordered. Fortunately, Fuecoco moved this time and slammed into Pawmi preempting his attack while dolling out a stronger blow thanks to the prior leer. The electric type wouldn’t let that deter him as he sparked with electricity once again. “Fuecoco, use ember.” Spike commanded. Fuecoco got off the ember this time, but it was at the same time as Pawmi got off thundershock, resulting in both pokemon hurting. Pawmi managed a skid while Fuecoco planted his feet and was cloaked in a fire red aura indicting blaze had activated. “Now’s your chance!” Nemona called out. “Pawmi should be weakened to the point a pokeball will catch it!” “Right.” Spike got out an empty pokeball. “Go, pokeball!” He threw the sphere which nailed Pawmi and sucked him in. Since the electric type wanted to be caught, he didn’t fight against this leading to an instant ding signifying his capture. Poco Path “Alright, I just caught my first pokemon!” Spike ran up and collected his pokeball. “Just check it out Fuecoco!” He presented the pokeball to the fire starter who happily celebrated the new friend, despite paralysis. “I’m glad you like it.” He took out a paralysis heal and a potion. “Here, let me heal you up.” After applying both forms of medicine, Fuecoco was able to be even happier with their success. “Now, it’s time to scan our new catch.” He scanned the pokeball with his Rotom Phone: Pawmi the Mouse Pokemon. The pads of its paws are electricity-discharging organs. Ability: Natural Cure Gender: Male Current Moves: Thunder Wave, Growl, Scratch, Thundershock “That was awesome!” Nemona laughed joyfully as she approached Spike. “You caught the very first pokemon you went for! Honestly, I’m crummy when it comes to catching pokemon. Perhaps it’s you who should be giving me tips.” Spike chuckled as he rubbed the back of his head. “Oh, thanks.” “What about you, Flash?” Nemona smiled. “I’d love to see the chops of a fellow, seasoned trainer.” “Nothing around here is really catching my interest.” Flash answered honestly. He wasn’t some pokemon elitist, mind you, but that didn’t mean he’d simply catch any old pokemon himself. For Flash, they had to speak to him as a pokemon he wanted. Maybe a Fletchling appealed to him somewhat, but not enough to go catching one. At best, it appealed to him because he knew they’d evolve to have a secondary fire typing, but he knew several other pokemon with that typing he’d want more. As such, he decided to just keep moving along the path. Nemona and Spike followed. “Since we’re moving out, we got to stop at that lighthouse ahead.” Nemona voiced. “If we climb to the top of it, you two can get a great view of the school.” “Sounds great to me!” Spike declared as he healed his new pokemon. “Sure, we can climb on up.” Flash added. As they walked, Nemona and Spike excitedly chatted about random stuff. That was fine by Flash since he had taken to more solitary introspection lately anyways, and the fact that they could keep each other busy meant he could simply zone out. “Guh-GYOHHH!” Suddenly, there was a pair of cries which drew their attention. “Whoa, what was that!?” Nemona asked. “Go-ohh…” It was the same two pokemon again. “I’ve never heard anything like this before.” Spike voiced. “It could be some strong pokemon.” Nemona added. The pair ended up moving to a nearby cliff with Flash bringing up the rear. Below, there was a large beach which led to the water or a cave, depending on which direction you went. There were also two similar yet different, in various ways, pokemon laid out. Four Houndour stood aggressively before the pair resulting in the two pokemon lifting their heads. “Ah-giiiYAHHHH!” Their massive roars caused the unstable cliff to crumble underneath Spike. “Watch out!” Flash shouted. He lunged forward, without thinking. His intention was to toss Spike to safer ground, but the cliff broke underneath before he could try. As such, Flash began attempting to position himself to take the brunt of the fall while wrapping his arms around Spike. Fortunately, no pain came as their Rotom Phones flew out of their pockets and entered Spike’s hands. As he was attempting to grasp onto something, he ended up firmly griping the phones, enabling them to lower the pair. Spike landed on his feet while Flash landed on his knees. He now let go of the smaller student and stood before both looked at their surroundings in relieved shock. Their respective Rotom Phones returned to their pockets. They ended up watching as the Houndour retreated into the nearby cave, leaving the two pokemon alone. “Did our Rotom Phones…save us?” Spike asked. “Yeah.” Flash took a deep breath. “Thank goodness they were given such a feature.” “You…” Spike looked at him, stunned someone who seemed so cold did what he did. “…tried to save me.” “Think nothing of it.” Flash shook his head before starting to approach the two pokemon. “Come on, we’re here now, so let’s go check on them.” Spike stared after Flash unsure of what to really make of the guy before he ultimately decided the older student was right, in that they should check on the pokemon. By proxy of moving first, Flash approached the prehistoric looking pokemon while Spike moved to the futuristic one. Upon getting close, both could hear the stomachs of the pokemon. This resulted in Flash and Spike looking at their bags. The former had that sandwich from his mother while Spike remembered picking one up, along with his supplies, before leaving Mesagoza. “Hey Flash, think they’re just too hungry to move?” Spike asked. “Well, from what I can tell, they don’t seem injured.” Flash voiced. “Perhaps some food would do. I have a sandwich on me, what about you?” “I picked one up in Mesagoza.” Spike answered. With that, they reached a silent conclusion as they both took out their sandwiches. The smell of food piqued the pokemon’s interest as their heads rose. They looked from the trainers to the food. After a quick sniff, they collectively chomped down. That seemed to do the trick as both pokemon stood making the trainers smile. The pokemon then ended up moving towards the cave. The pair stopped before it with the prehistoric pokemon glowing orange while the futuristic one glowed blue. They suddenly lept a bit into the air letting off fighting and electric type energies, respectively, in rather powerful bursts. They both became bipedal with the prehistoric one standing while the futuristic one levitated. “Whoa, I’ve never seen pokemon like them!” Spike commented. Flash scanned them with his phone only to get the same results: “No Data Found. Constructing data off scan” “No Data Found. Constructing data off scan” “Well, that’s going to take a while to get anything on them.” Flash shook his head. “Our pokedexs aren’t going to be much help either.” The prehistoric one glanced back at Flash while the futuristic one did the same to Spike. Then, the pair entered the cave. “Come on, let’s follow!” Spike exclaimed while running towards the cave. Considering that seemed to be their only way back up, at least easily, Flash followed suit. Upon reaching the cave, it appeared as though the pokemon had been waiting on them. “Hey, looks like they want to lead us out.” Spike declared happily. “Maybe they’re that thankful for the meal?” Flash guessed. Without a word, they pressed on prompting the boys to follow. Inlet Grotto The cave was rather large with a clear path up, pools of water nearby, and was lit by glowing plants. Flash and Spike were both marveling at it. “Hm, I don’t recall anything like this back in Hoenn.” Flash commented. “Well, I haven’t seen much of my home region myself to be honest.” Spike chuckled. “So, this is a new experience for me to.” “Spike! Flash!” Nemona’s voice reached them, so the pair looked up to see her at another entrance higher up along the cave. “There you two are!” She sounded so relieved. “Are you guys okay!? You’re not hurt, right?” “We’re fine!” Flash yelled back. “Oh, thank goodness.” Nemona was relieved. “I was worried. If you’d had gotten hurt…No, never mind.” She shook her head. “Right now, we got to focus on getting you up here. If you find some way up, I can see about pulling you up.” “Got it, we’ll see what can be done on our end.” Spike voiced. They then continued with the two pokemon who, again, waited for them before pressing on. “Hey, who are those pokemon in front of you!?” Now that she knew they were fine, Nemona’s attention was drawn to the pokemon. “They look super strong!” The prehistoric one tore through a boulder in their path, scaring two Houndour behind it to the point they took off. “Yeah, I’d say they’re certainly strong.” Flash muttered. “We don’t know!” Spike answered. “Flash tried scanning them with his pokedex, but there was no data to be had! Now, we’re just following them out!” “Well, what they just did was amazing.” Nemona voiced as the four of them moved out. “Those two might just be as strong as my prior team. Maybe even stronger.” Flash was carefully observing their environment while Spike marveled at the two pokemon. Because of this, he spotted a Houndoom on a higher ledge looking down at them. “That Houndoom looks strong, much too strong for any one of our pokemon to beat, and there’s no true indication these two wild pokemon would defend us should it decide to attack.” Flash reasoned. “If it decides to attack, we’ll need a plan.” As they continued to press on, Flash began mulling over said plan. It wasn’t long down the path before they turned a corner. There was a whole pack of Houndour who suddenly ran up to them. They seemed ready to tangle before the two pokemon guiding the way roared driving them off. “Whoa, that was cool.” Spike declared, amazed. “Yeah, though that was one of the largest Houndour packs I’ve ever seen.” Flash voiced. They soon came up to another boulder where the futuristic one clawed it down this time enabling them to move on. “Oh my gosh, they can straight up pulverize those rocks!” Nemona commented. “Just how strong are they? Just what move is that?” Soon enough, the two pokemon stopped, and she noticed something. “Hey you two, look out! Something is coming up behind you!” The boys turned to see that Houndoom had come up behind them, and she was not happy that these four had invaded her space. “DOOOOM!” Houndoom declared. “Flash, you’re the experienced trainer!” Spike exclaimed, a little fearful. “What do we do?” Flash looked back only to see the two pokemon were more scared than Spike. Fortunately, the older student had come up with something upon seeing the Houndoom. “Will you trust me?” Flash asked. “If whatever you got in mind gets us out of this, I’ll do whatever you say.” Spike declared. “Pawmi in the middle, Fuecoco to the right, and I’ll throw Quaxly to the left.” Flash quickly explained, he didn’t know how long Houndoom would be content observing them. “Ember and water gun at an angle. Then, thunder wave down the middle to hit it head on.” “Go, Fuecoco and Pawmi!” Spike shouted, throwing them where Flash had directed. “I choose you, Quaxly!” Flash shouted. Flash & Spike vs Houndoom “Quaxly, water gun Houndoom!” Flash ordered. “Fuecoco, ember Houndoom!” Spike commanded. Houndoom got ready to charge forward, right at the electric type. “Pawmi, thunder wave!” Spike ordered. Quaxly and Fuecoco did launch their respective moves, only for Houndoom to rush Pawmi. The mouse pokemon sparked with electricity and managed to get off thunder wave just as Houndoom landed fire fang. This resulted in Pawmi fainting while the dark pokemon was paralyzed. At minimum, this would slow the fire/dark type down. At best, they would be unable to move, giving the boys a chance to land some key hits. Houndoom stared at Flash, impressed he planned this, yet still unwilling to back down. “What now?” Spike asked, returning his Pawmi. “Now, battle.” Flash declared. “Dodge what you can and hammer home blows.” He looked at his starter. “Water gun, now.” “Fuecoco, ember.” Spike declared. Houndoom prepared to lunge at the duck, knowing water types, even weak ones, could be troublesome; however, paralysis kicked in keeping them stationary. Since their ability wasn’t flash fire, both attacks hit home with water gun doing more given type advantage. Spike noted this, deciding he had to take one for the team. “Fuecoco, tackle with all your might!” “Quaxly, water gun.” Flash ordered. Fuecoco ran as fast as he could, slamming into Houndoom’s side. Even though the dark pokemon hadn’t budged, there was damage. Then, water gun hit their other side dolling out another blow. The fire/dark type then crunched Fuecoco, fainting him. Spike returned him. “Quaxly, water gun.” Flash ordered. “Then, I’ll need you to dodge whatever Houndoom tries.” Quaxly got off water gun, landing another blow, before Houndoom charged the duckling pokemon with thunder fang. The water type did a little dance move, in the form of a slide, just managing to miss the thunder fang by inches. “Now, give it your strongest water gun!” Flash ordered. Quaxly took as deep a breath as possible, knowing the situation was dire, and unleashed his strongest water gun nailing the opposing pokemon in the back. While that most certainly damaged Houndoom, it wasn’t enough to stop them from coming in with another thunder fang. This time, the move connected which fainted their last pokemon; however, Houndoom was now panting. Between the moves it used, combined with what damage the two trainers had managed and paralysis, it was quite possible this pokemon was right where Flash wanted them. He took out an empty pokeball and threw it with all his might. Houndoom prepared to bat it away, only for paralysis to rear its ugly head ensuring they stayed stationary. The pokeball hit Houndoom sucking them inside. At this moment, Flash returned his starter. Now, Flash and Spike watched on with batted breath as the pokeball shook back and forth, violently. Houndoom was doing their absolute best to break free. Eventually, it stopped and dinged signifying a successful capture. Inlet Grotto Both students breathed a sigh of relief before Flash went and collected the pokeball. Unfortunately, their troubles weren’t over. The Houndour had observed this, and they were not happy. The pack surged on out surrounding the whole group. “Was this part of the plan?” Spike asked. “Nope.” Flash stated. “I was kind of hoping catching the pack leader would ensure they didn’t want to mess with us.” This was a bad situation which saw the two pokemon looking at one another, both boys, and the ever-growing pack of Houndour. Ultimately, their resolve was solidified. Both lept at one of the trainers and grabbed them. Nemona, who had watched everyone, called out to the two pokemon. “Heeeey!” The pokemon looked at her. “Up here! Quick!” Both pokemon took huge leaps right on up and away from the pack before joining Nemona. The pokemon then set both guys down. “Thank you both!” Spike exclaimed happily. “Yeah.” Flash nodded. “Thanks for the save.” “For a second, I believed you two were goners.” Nemona commented, relieved. This entrance happened to be even closer to the lighthouse than the trio had originally been prior to the two of them falling. The two pokemon did start in that direction, only to collapse, reverting to their four-legged states, on their sides. “Whoa!” Nemona exclaimed as the trio ran to check on them. “What’s wrong!?” “They likely used up all their power.” Flash reasoned. “Spike and I did find them starving.” “I wonder just what they are?” Spike questioned now that they were safe. “They kind of look like Cyclizar, but I’ve never seen any which look like them. Think they’re okay?” “Hard to say.” Flash voiced. “You can’t tell either, huh Flash?” Nemona questioned. “Well, all that aside, I’m seriously glad you two are back with me in one piece. You know, that battle with the Houndoom you two had was something else.” She looked at Flash. “That was seriously some plan you had.” “Fortunately, it worked in the end.” Flash stated. “That reminds me, I should scan Houndoom.” He got out his Rotom Phone: Houndoom, the Dark Pokémon. The evolved form of Houndour. Houndoom's eerie howl is said to cause those who hear it to shudder in fear. Ability: Early Bird Gender: Female Current Moves: Incinerate, Howl, Smog, Crunch, Thunder Fang, Fire Fang “Whoa, that one has some good moves.” Nemona commented. “Even after that battle, you two just kept rolling by being in perfect synch with these two.” “We didn’t even tell them what to do.” Spike voiced. “You didn’t!” Nemona exclaimed, shocked as she looked at the pokemon. “Well, I guess it’s not like either of you are their trainer.” Suddenly, both pokemon stood once more. “Oh good, looks like they perked up a little.” “Well, that’s good.” Spike voiced. “Oh man, oh man, oh man!” Nemona exclaimed, excitedly. “The more I look at them, the more mysterious they seem!” She looked at the guys. “If either of you become one of their trainers, you got to battle me.” She then looked at Flash. “You got to let me battle that Houndoom.” “Not sure about that until I check on her disposition now that she’s caught.” Flash voiced. “Ah, probably wise.” Nemona shook her head. “Regardless, we should all trade numbers. That way, we can get in touch should any of us become separated.” “Good idea.” Spike voiced. Flash shrugged. “Eh, why not?” Their Rotom Phones came out and exchanged numbers between them. “Alright, you’ve both been through enough for a minute.” Nemona walked a bit towards the light house. “Let’s head to the lighthouse and take a breather.” “Sound good to me.” Spike joined her. “I could use one.” “Same.” Flash added, joining them. With the trio in agreement, and the pokemon following them now, the whole group set off for the nearby lighthouse. Spike and Flash made sure to heal up their respective pokemon as they walked to. > Los Platos > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lighthouse The trio of students and two pokemon managed to get down the ledge before walking to the lighthouse. At said location, a girl around Flash’s age was peering inside the building. She had long red and yellow hair, as well as cyan eyes. She wore the autumn uniform as well. The girl turned before staring unhappily at the two pokemon. “Why those little…” She angrily ran over to confront the pokemon. “What are you two doing out here!?” She then noted the three students. “I’m not talking to you three. Shove off.” For the third time since they first met, the prior two being tending to the pokemon and rallying to fight Houndoom, Spike and Flash were on the same page. They just shared a look of bewilderment at this girl. “Wait, I know you.” Nemona spoke up. “Aren’t you, Sunset Shimmer? You’re enrolled in the humanity track, right? Also, aren’t you the daughter of Professors Celestia and Sombra?” “It doesn’t matter who I’m related to.” Sunset turned to them and shook her head forcefully. “The real issue is what in the world are these pokemon doing out here, and what forms are these!?” “Spike and I found them at the bottom of a nearby cliff.” Flash answered. “They were hungry, so the two of us fed them some sandwiches.” “They then led us through Inlet Grotto before we ended up in a rough spot.” Spike nodded in agreement. “They got us out before reverting to these forms.” “The form Koraidon and Miraidon…” Sunset pointed to the prehistoric and futuristic pokemon in turn. “…take in battle are their true forms.” “Koraidon and Miraidon?” Spike asked, curiously. “Are those their names? How do you know them?” The pokemon stared at the lab part of the lighthouse making Sunset shake her head. “You can’t go into the lab because it’s locked.” She zeroed in on the two guys. “I don’t remember seeing either of you, but those uniforms must mean you attend Uva too. Koraidon and Miraidon can’t be commanded by any old trainers. They’re special.” “Special how?” Nemona asked. “What sort of pokemon are they?” Sunset glanced her way for a moment before ignoring her. “If you two think you’re up to ordering them around, then one of you can prove it to me.” “If you’d give away pokemon like these, then I’ll be your opponent.” Flash stated. “Look at you, stepping up to the plate.” Sunset rolled up her sleeves. “I’ve been feeling out of sorts lately, so I’ll use this battle to blast the doldrums away!” Nemona and Spike moved off to the side with the pokemon while Sunset moved back across from Flash. “Go, Lechonk!” Flash took out his Rotom Phone: Lechonk, the Hog Pokémon. A Normal type. It searches for food all day. It possesses a keen sense of smell but doesn’t use it for anything other than foraging. Flash then took out the pokeball of his starter. “I choose you, Quaxly!” The water starter appeared ready to battle. Flash vs Sunset “These memories are leaving a bad taste in my mouth, and I want them gone!” Sunset declared. “Lechonk, use tackle!” “Quaxly, dodge before using pound.” Flash ordered. The new student took note of his starter having a sort of rhythmic dodging style. With it, he effortlessly moved around the coming attack before landing a pound on the opposing pokemon’s side. Given this was a less tense situation, he also recalled something similar against Houndoom. “Quaxly has a sense of rhythm.” Flash nodded. “That’s useful to know.” “Lechonk, disarming voice.” Sunset commanded. Lechonk let rip oinking that sent fairy type soundwaves crashing into Quaxly damaging him. “Quaxly, lean into your way of movement and encircle the pokemon.” Flash instructed. Quaxly hadn’t expected such an order, but he was happy to follow it. The starter really began moving with a rhythmic style. One could call it a dance, but it was by no means refined. Still, it was getting the job done as Lechonk was having trouble tracking the opponent’s movements. “What’s Flash doing?” Spike mused, confused once again by the older boy. “He has an odd, yet fun way of battling!” Nemona thought, now more excited to eventually battle her neighbor. “I challenged you to a battle, not a dance off.” Sunset voiced firmly. “Battling is exactly what I’m doing, but if you don’t believe me, try attacking.” Flash challenged. “Lechonk, show them there’s no place for dancing by tackling that water type.” Sunset ordered. “Quaxly, don’t let them interrupt your rhythm.” Flash instructed. “Pound your wings into the ground at an angle.” Quaxly pounded his left wing at the ground while sticking out his right into the air, performing a pose. This was done at the right time as Lechonk, who hadn’t adjusted to this change, ended up running along Quaxly’s wings. Upon running out of wing, she fell to the ground. “Now, swing your extended wing into the ground and finish this with a pound.” Flash instructed. Quaxly swung his remaining wing into the ground while pushing off it. While the duckling pokemon wouldn’t catch massive air, it was enough to put him just over the opposing normal type. He then pounded down hard on the hog pokemon. This sent her crashing to the ground, and she was left with swirls in her eyes. The water type managed to land on his feet. While he had been glad to be chosen as a starter before, he was now overjoyed to have a trainer like Flash; especially if it led to more battles like this. Lighthouse “Return Lechonk.” As she returned her pokemon, Sunset shook her head in defeat. “Seems you do know a thing or two about battling.” “Wow, that was awesome Flash.” Nemona complimented. “Yeah, what exactly was that with Quaxly?” Spike asked. “Every pokemon has a way they battle.” Flash answered. “If you fight them on it, it’ll stunt the pokemon. Conversely, working with them on it will make your bond and the pokemon much are stronger than they’d be otherwise.” “Figures I wouldn’t stand a chance using some pokemon I just caught.” Sunset voiced with a sigh as she approached. “If you really think you can take those two over there off my hands, then you’ll need the pokeballs those brutes have been kept in.” Sunset passed over both to Flash, but he turned to Spike. “Here, you take Miraidon.” He tossed the ball to the guy, surprising him. “Might as well break up the responsibility.” “Why did YOU have their pokeballs?” Nemona asked. “Well, do with them as you like since they are now your problem.” Sunset was continuing to ignore Nemona. “Good luck.” She then took off running from them to the students’ shock. “What!?” Nemona exclaimed. “Can you not hear me or something?” “Fairly certain she’s choosing to ignore you.” Spike commented. “Well fine!” Nemona yelled after Sunset. “Be that way, but you better show up for school!” The girl was gone, leaving the student body president to sigh. “What a weirdo…” At this point, Koraidon approached Flash while Miraidon approached Spike. “Well, looks like we’re taking care of these two now.” Spike voiced. “Seems that way, but if what Sunset said is true, we can’t really battle with them.” Flash added. They returned the pokemon to their respective pokeballs. “I bet that Sunset knows more than she let on.” Nemona voiced. “Next time, we’ll battle, and I’ll wring some answers from her.” She then shook her head. “For now, let’s climb the lighthouse.” She looked at the guys with a smile. “I can’t wait to show you two the view.” Since this is the initial reason why they’d come here, the guys had no problem climbing up the ladder after her. Atop the Lighthouse Once up there, the three of them could see the vast ocean, Caba Poco, the path they took, a small town just a little further down the path, wide open space beyond that, and Mesagoza just beyond that space. It was one large city. Perhaps even larger than any city Flash saw prior in Hoenn. “Look Flash!” Nemona called out to him. “That’s Mesagoza!” “That is one big city.” Flash commented. “It sure is.” Spike smiled proudly. “One of the biggest in the world.” “If you look at that building with the pokeball, that’s Uva Academy.” Nemona informed. “It’s going to be great having you two in the same class.” “I’m looking forward to it.” Spike responded happily. “Right? I can’t wait to get back!” Nemona declared. “We’re going to learn so much…and battle so, so, SO much!” She then turned to Flash with a smile. “With a view like this, allow me to say that I officially welcome you to Paldea!” “You know what, yeah.” Spike agreed. “Welcome to Paldea, Flash.” Flash walked up to the railing, laid his hands across it, and stared out at the landscape. “There’s a lot of…opportunity.” Not exactly what the Paldean natives expected to hear from him, but they’d roll with it. “Anyways, as you can see from here, there’s still quite the hike left before we even get to Mesagoza.” Nemona pointed out the town. “Let’s make for Los Platos first. It is right on the way after all. Vamos, come on you two!” She was quick to head for the ladder, prompting the guys to follow. Los Platos Upon leaving the lighthouse, and making their way to Los Platos, the trio saw some new pokemon among familiar faces from Poco Path. There were Psyduck, Buizel Azurill, Magikarp, and Paldean Whooper near a river which ran under a wooden bridge. Upon nearing Los Platos, they could see Igglybuff and Fidough. The town itself was rather nice with plenty of homes, stands selling food, and a Pokemon Center. It came with an attached shop carrying all the basic supplies any trainer would need, from potions to pokeballs. “Over here we have the Pokemon Center.” Nemona voiced. “It’s where you basically take care of anything related to your pokemon, but I should leave the explanation to the pros.” “Happy to be of service.” Nurse Joy pipped up. “Welcome to the Pokemon Center. I’m here to keep all your pokemon healthy. On my left is the Poke Mart counter where you can buy things like pokeballs and potions.” “Hello.” The guy greeted. “We accept payment in Pokedollars or League Points(LP). LP is a form of currency only utilized by trainers. The primary way to acquire it is by winning battles, and it’s worth is equivalent to Pokedollars.” Flash immediately approached the Pokemon Center. “Hello, welcome to the Pokemon Center.” Nurse Joy greeted with a smile. “Are your pokemon tired and in need of rest?” “Yes, please heal my pokemon.” Flash voiced, handing over his pokeballs. Nurse Joy took and inserted them into the machine. Quaxly and Houndoom were fully healed before she gave them back. “Alright, Quaxly and the rest of your team should be better now.” Nurse Joy nodded. “We hope to see you again.” Flash then stepped back, allowing the others to heal their pokemon, before taking stock of his medicine and pokeballs pouch. Once he had the count, Flash went about restocking. Nemona and Spike followed suit. “So, what now?” Spike asked. “Are we going to head up to Mesagoza?” “If there’s time, I’d like to head back out of Los Platos for a moment and see what I’m dealing with when it comes to Houndoom.” Flash voiced. “Yeah, there should be plenty of time!” Nemona declared, clearly excitedly. “I’m not just saying that because I want to get a look at that Houndoom up close!” They started walking that way. “For all we know, she’ll still be aggressive.” Spike was giving the student president a look. “Please, do be careful.” South Providence(Area 1) Now that they were out of Los Platos, and away from people that wouldn’t know what could potentially happen, Flash felt better releasing his first catch. He was also prepared to return her the moment it looked like Houndoom might attack them. “I choose you, Houndoom!” Flash declared. The fire/dark type appeared before turning towards Flash. She noticed the boy tense up with her pokeball in hand. That was good since it showed her new trainer was keeping up his intelligence. With this proof apparent, she had no intention of attacking him at least. Flash obviously didn’t know the pokemon’s thought process, but he could recognize she wouldn’t attack any of them. That seemed like a good sign, so he slowly approached his first capture…only for her to suddenly spin around before laying on the ground, curled up. “Uh, I didn’t expect that.” Spike commented. “I thought for sure she’d be aggressive.” “I don’t know about that, but what I will say is that seeing this Houndoom up close cinches it.” Nemona nodded. “She’s a strong member of her species.” Flash didn’t personally deal with this, but he could remember Brendan, back before the prior journey went downhill, telling him about a Bagon he’d caught. Before he jumped to conclusions, the student would see about getting answers. “Hey Houndoom, do you accept me as your trainer?” Houndoom rose her head and nodded in the affirmative to Flash’s question. “Let me guess, you won’t listen because I’m not strong enough?” She nodded again To her, this was only more confirmation that this boy could be her trainer, but his strength, as she saw it, was lacking. After all, he only managed to catch her by teaming up with another human. Now, she wasn’t a naïve Houndour. Houndoom could respect pack tactics. If Flash wanted to command her, he had to faint her with any one pokemon of his. Until he could best her in combat, she would not heed his orders. Houndoom had no intention of causing trouble; however, she would not battle for him in any capacity. “Honestly, better than I assumed.” Flash commented. “Having a pokemon that won’t listen to you…is better than you assumed?” Spike asked. “I’d say compared to the alternatives of causing trouble and attacking people, this is rather tame.” Flash shrugged. “Besides, it gives me a goal to strive for.” “That’s the spirit Flash!” Nemona was supportive. Suddenly, a Fidough ran out from the nearby bush. He had spotted the evolved pokemon and was amazed. He ran right up to the fire/dark type, looking at her with stars in his eyes. The dark pokemon glanced at him. “Houn?” “Fid! Fid! Fid!” Fidough jumped, excitedly. “What’s happening?” Spike asked. Houndoom snorted and laid her head down. This fairy type wanted her to play with him, but she did not play games these days. It was clear to her that this was a mere pup, especially when compared to her. Her action only made Fidough leap onto her back. Once there, he stared bouncing up and down to coax the cool, evolved pokemon into playing with him. For the moment, Houndoom was content to ignore him, but that didn’t seem like it’d last. “I think Fidough wants to play with Houndoom.” Nemona noted. “Doesn’t seem like Houndoom wants the same.” Flash noticed his pokemon’s growing discomfort and prepared to step in. “I should get him off…” He didn’t get to finish as Houndoom stood. The sudden motion sent the fairy type falling to the ground with a thud while the evolved pokemon walked a few feet away. Once there, she laid back down again. Being rejected like that made Fidough sad. “Hm, figures she’d have more patience than I gave her credit for.” Flash crossed his arms. “I mean, she did head that whole Houndour pack.” Fidough stood up and looked at Houndoom sadly. “Fid…” He didn’t understand why that pokemon didn’t want to play with him. Seeing this, Spike decided he could play with the pokemon, for at least a few minutes. “Hey Fidough, would you like to play with me?” Spike questioned. Hearing that, the fairy type perked up and turned to the trainer excitedly. “Fidough!” Flash and Nemona were content to watch. Spike didn’t really have any toys on him, but he did have pokeballs. The younger student took one out before placing it on the ground and rolling the object to the pokemon. The wild pokemon saw the sphere and became interested in it. He sniffed the pokeball before proceeding to bat it around with his paws and chased it around in a game of fetch with himself. It was a rather cute sight. Soon, the pokemon batted the ball over to Spike and sat down expectantly, wanting him to throw it. Spike smiled as he picked the device up and threw it. The wild pokemon chased after it before jumping to catch it. He ended up pressing the button and was sucked inside. The pokeball fell and shook a couple of times before dinging. The pokemon clearly put-up little resistance. "Did…I just catch that pokemon?" Spike asked, confused. “Wow, you really are good at catching pokemon!” Nemona declared. “I never have that kind of luck.” “Well, some pokemon are more inclined to be captured.” Flash reasoned. “Perhaps you just haven’t found any who had thoughts of potentially being with a trainer, like that Fidough.” Spike walked over to the pokeball containing his accidental capture and pulled out his Rotom Phone: Fidough, The Puppy Pokemon. The yeast in Fidough’s breath is useful for cooking, so this Pokémon has been protected by people since long ago. Type: Fairy Ability: Own Tempo Gender: Female Current Moves: Growl, Tackle, Lick, Tail Whip, Bite With a new capture, the trio approached Los Platos. This time, they were being followed by a Ralts who seemed transfixed on Flash. At first, the feeling pokemon would have gone the opposite way since, to him, that guy had no positive disposition to speak of. Before the psychic/fairy type could flee, he picked up on just what he thought this guy lacked. The older boy of the trio did have a positive disposition, but it was buried beneath negative feelings. This had prompted Ralts to follow as he decided on what to do. “There are two roads out; however, both lead to Mesagoza.” Nemona smiled. “With how you two have been catching pokemon, I want to see if I can manage it myself. I’ll take one of those roads while you two take the other. So, will you go right or straight?” “I’m fine going along whichever road Flash wants.” Spike declared. “Then, we’ll take the right road and meet you at the gate.” Flash stated. Before the trio could part, Ralts darted from his hiding place shocking them. He lept at Flash, with tears in his eyes, and ended up gripping onto his shirt. The sudden motion dislodged one of his pokeballs, which hit the ground, but Flash paid that no mind. He was merely doing his best to support the psychic/fairy type, allowing him to give a hug. It took a moment to get the full scoop, through his power to feel emotions, but after he did, Ralts felt genuinely sad for Flash. He had no idea what bad this boy had experienced. The fact that he still had some form of positive disposition left was a miracle. It also likely meant that at one point he’d been a truly positive person who endured a lot to become who he was now. Ralts had effectively decided he had to help this boy, and he would no matter what. “I’ve only ever seen Ralts cry when they run from people they don’t like.” Nemona voiced. “I’ve never seen one cry like this and attach themselves to the person responsible.” “At this point, I’m not even surprised a Ralts did come to Flash.” Spike thought. “I’m still confused by what this means, but it’s not surprising.” “Why would a Ralts ever come to me?” Flash asked himself. “I thought after everything, I’d be a deterrent to practically any psychic pokemon…Then again, Metagross didn’t leave me, but hopefully Brandan can help it move on.” “Flash, are you alright?” Nemona asked, snapping him out of his thoughts. “You’re looking kind of intently at that Ralts.” “Uh, yeah I’m fine.” Flash shook his head. “Just give me a minute.” He then went about running his hand comfortingly along the psychic/fairy type’s back in a soothing manner. It did calm the feeling pokemon down at the same time his gaze settled on the empty pokeball laying on the ground. Seeing this, Ralts sniffled before acting. He lept from Flash’s arms before rushing over and tapping the pokeball, letting it suck him in. Ralts knew what pokeballs were, so this would ensure he wouldn’t leave the student’s side. He’d be this trainer’s pokemon, and the immediate ding that signified a capture cinched it. “Huh, congratulations Flash!” Nemona smiled. “I think that beats out how Spike caught Fidough.” As for Flash, he picked up the pokeball figuring he couldn’t turn the pokemon down. He may have no idea why Ralts would want to be his pokemon, but if he learned anything from his mistakes, it was to respect your pokemon fully. “Might as well scan it.” Flash thought. He got out his Rotom Phone: Ralts, the Feeling Pokémon. It can use the horns on its head to read human emotions. Ralts rarely shows itself to humans but may occasionally approach when it senses positive or happy feelings. Ability: Synchronize Gender: Male Current Moves: Shadow Sneak, Disarming Voice, Growl, Double Team, Confusion, Hypnosis “Now, I’m even more fired up to catch a pokemon of my own!” Nemona took off running down the road. “I’ll meet you guys at the gate to Mesagoza!” She did not take long to be out of sight, so Flash put his new pokeball on his belt with the other two. “Alright, let’s…” “Hey you!” A male voice suddenly called out. Both boys turned and saw a guy around Flash’s age approaching. He had emerald, green eyes, cobalt blue hair, and a scar across his nose. He wore a no sleeved gray shirt with matching pants, a gray blazer with white trim, and matching boots. He was looking at Flash which told the student he was the one the guy had been calling out to. “Can I help you?” “My name is Shadow Lock, and I challenge you to a one-on-one battle.” The guy declared. “The way this guy looks at me…It’s as though he somehow knows me.” Flash thought. The student was certain he never met this guy in Hoenn or since moving to Paldea. Given those are the only regions Flash had been to, he knew they’ve never met before. Somehow, he knew this guy was aware of this, yet still knew him in some form. “Alright, I’ll accept your challenge.” Flash stated. Spike stepped off to the side while the two trainers backed up, prepared to battle. “Capsakid, I choose you!” Shadow declared. Flash took out his Rotom Phone: Capsakid, the Spicy Pepper Pokemon. Traditional Paldean dishes can be extremely spicy because they include the shed front teeth of Capsakid among their ingredients. “It also tells me this is a grass type, which isn’t a great match up for Quaxly.” Flash thought. “I could use Ralts, but he was just crying. I should give him a moment before tossing him out.” Considering Houndoom wouldn’t listen to him, he only had one option. “I choose you, Quaxly!” His starter appeared ready to battle once more. Flash vs Shadow “Just like before, move along with the rhythm.” Flash declared. Just like against Sunset prior, Quaxly began moving in his unrefined style of dance. “If you will not attack, we shall.” Shadow declared. “Capsakid, use leafage.” “Dodge it and strike with pound.” Flash commanded. Capsakid summoned a swirl of leaves and sent them Quaxly’s way; however, the starter deftly avoided them before moving forward. He pounded his wing into the top of grass type’s head disorienting him. “Now, use bite.” Shadow ordered. “Quaxly, use pound on the ground to get some air.” Flash instructed. “Then, come down and pound again.” As Capsakid moved to bite the dancing pokemon, the water type smashed his wings into the ground narrowly avoiding the attack. This resulted in Capsakid faltering and falling to the ground right where Quaxly would land. As the water starter lined up his wing for pound, Flash noticed the flying type energy which appeared around it. The duckling pokemon’s attack just went from pound to wing attack, so when it nailed the grass type, that was all she wrote. He had been rendered unconscious. South Providence(Area 1) “You gave it your best Capsakid, return.” Shadow declared. Quaxly was now looking at his wings in surprise as Flash approached him with a smile. “Looks like you’re growing well from the battles we’ve been in.” Quaxly smiled. “Quax!” Upon seeing Shadow approach, Flash stood. The guy put a hand on his shoulder while shooting him a firm look of determination. “I don’t care what it takes to stop you.” Shadow whispered seriously, surprising Flash. “I will not let anyone unleash Ruin upon Paldea.” “W-What?” Flash questioned, only for Shadow to part from him and sprint off back the way he came. “Wait, what are you talking about!?” Shadow didn’t stop as he took a sharp left and was soon out of sight. “What did he tell you?” Spike asked, confused, as he approached his fellow student. “I’m not even sure what to make of what happened, so do I tell anyone about this?” Flash shook his head. “I’m going to have to think on this because that was just confusing.” He ignored Spike’s question to return Quaxly. “You did good, return.” “Flash?” Spike asked. Flash breezed past him. “Come on, let’s get to Mesagoza.” Spike knew whatever that guy said had gotten to Flash in some way, but he didn’t know exactly how. Just like with prior instances, he felt the older student wouldn’t give up any answers. As such, the younger student merely followed. > Flash vs Nemona > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- South Providence(Area 1) Flash and Spike left Los Platos and moved along the road which would take them to Mesagoza. Among the pokemon they’ve already seen prior, there were Pichu, Bonsly, Bounsweet, Shroodle, and Chewtle. Only the younger student paid attention as Flash was mulling over what happened. “I’ll bring Ruin to Paldea…” Flash pondered. “Does he somehow know of my prior journey across Hoenn and think I’m still that person? I mean, I guess I could be. Sure, I’m a respectable trainer now, but that’s how I started my first journey.” Obviously, even with the travesty that was his journey, Flash would like to think he learned a lot. Even with that, the student couldn’t guarantee he’d remain a respectable trainer. He already fell down the slippery slope before, so it could happen again, despite him not wanting it. While Flash was cognizant enough to know he hadn’t slipped up thus far, would he always be aware? While he was worried, the guy wasn’t spiraling. He was aware that there might be some other explanation, but he couldn’t really conjure one with the information available. “If I ever run into Shadow again, I’ll need to get answers.” Flash thought firmly. Eventually, the boys made it to the gate, and it wasn’t long before Nemona joined them. “Hey guys, I managed to get a great catch, and now I’d like to battle you, neighbor. How about it?” “Sure, I’d like to see how I stack up.” Flash voiced. “Alright, let’s have a fruitful two-on-two.” Nemona declared. The two backed up from one another while Spike moved off to the side. “Given what I’ve experienced with and seen from these two, this is bound to be a good battle.” “I choose you, Ralts!” Flash declared, throwing out his newest capture. The psychic/fairy was now composed from his earlier state. Flash had accepted him as his pokemon, so his pokemon he would be. Nemona was quick to make her selection. “Battle, Sprigatito!” Her starter appeared, ready to battle. Flash vs Nemona (P. I) “Sprigatito, use bite.” Nemona commanded. “Ralts, use shadow sneak.” Flash ordered. Before Sprigatito could move, Ralts’ shadow lunged forward attacking her and interrupting the process of utilizing bite. “Sprigatito, use leafage.” Nemona ordered. “Ralts, double team into hypnosis.” Flash commanded. Many Ralts appeared and encircled Sprigatito who had to take a guess when firing off her leaves. She chose wrong as they harmlessly flew through an afterimage leaving the real psychic/fairy type all the time in the world to nail hypnosis sending the starter to sleep. South Providence(Area 1) “Sprigatito, return!” Nemona recalled her starter with a smile. “Heh, you really know how to take advantage of your status moves.” “It was a hard learned lesson.” Flash alluded seriously. “Now, I know better than to disregard such moves.” Back in his prior journey, Flash came to see such moves as a cheap path to close strength gaps. On some level, he was glad that was the case since there’s no telling how much longer he could have stayed in that prior mindset with moves like these at his disposal. “Well, let’s see how you hold up when I’ve seen them.” Nemona switched her pokeballs. “Battle, Pawmi!” Nemona’s own Pawmi appeared with electricity sparking from his paws. “Oh, Nemona caught her own Pawmi.” Spike noted. “I’ll probably pick up some tricks on how to utilize mine by seeing how she uses hers.” “You still up to battle, Ralts?” Flash asked. Even though he didn’t take any damage, the psychic/fairy type still used up some energy. Despite that, Ralts firmed up. “Ralts!” “Alright, let’s keep battling.” Flash declared. Flash vs Nemona (P. II) “Ralts, use confusion.” Flash ordered. Just because Spike’s Pawmi had natural cure for an ability, it didn’t mean Nemona’s would, and a common ability for electric types was static which would paralysis his pokemon. Not an ideal situation, so a change in strategy was in order. “Pawmi, use fake out.” Nemona commanded. Pawmi did a leap into the air while transparent hands smashed into Ralts’. This doled out some damage and flinched him. “Now, thunder shock.” Nemona ordered. Before the electric type landed, he pointed his paws at Ralts nailing him with the electric attack which damaged him further. “Quick attack.” Nemona declared. At this point, Flash could see her strategy was to overwhelm. Whether it was to beat down Ralts quick or force him into making physical contact, both strategies were sound. The guy didn’t have much choice considering the limited number of moves his pokemon knew at this point. Wasn’t that just the point? Nemona was expertly making use of what her Pawmi knew to overcomes how Flash had just used Ralts against Sprigatito. One thing with this strategy is that fake out could only be used upon being sent out, and it had to be the first move used. This meant it was a strategy with a lot of upkeep and the added risk being that Sprigatito was currently asleep. That made it more likely that Nemona wouldn’t risk constant switching just to take the battle nor did Flash assume that to be her preferred strategy. “It’s abundantly clear how she became a champion.” Flash thought. “Pawmi, use scratch.” Nemona ordered. “Ralts, disarming voice.” Flash commanded. Ralts let loose his voice, imbued with fairy type energy, which damaged and disoriented the electric type before he could scratch the feeling pokemon. “Use thunder shock.” Nemona commanded. “Shadow sneak.” Flash ordered. Given how much damage Ralts has sustained, Flash decided the paralysis risk was worth getting in more damage now. As Pawmi began charging his electricity, Ralts’ shadow surged forward damaging the electric type and disrupting him. Conversely, Ralts was afflicted by static. “Now, follow it up with a confusion.” Flash commanded. “End it with scratch.” Nemona ordered. Ralts tried to summon forth his psychic energy, but paralysis struck stopping him dead in his tracks. The mouse pokemon lunged forward scratching the feeling pokemon who then collapsed with swirls in his eyes. For all the damage Flash dealt, he was still the first to lose a pokemon. South Providence(Area 1) “This puts Flash at a huge disadvantage.” Spike realized. “Even with the damage to her two pokemon, and one of them sleeping, Flash’s last, viable pokemon is Quaxly. Even though he hasn’t battled, both of Nemona’s pokemon have the type advantage.” “Ralts, return.” Flash recalled his pokemon. “You did well, so take a rest.” Flash had already realized every point Spike was thinking. In short, asking his pokemon to attempt a one v two, with more stacked against them than in their favor, was a tall order. “Hey Nemona, I need a moment.” Flash called out. “Hm?” Nemona was a bit stunned before realized why. “Ah, alright. Go ahead.” “Thanks.” Flash pointed his starter’s pokeball to his side. “Quaxly, I choose you.” The water starter was sent out directly next to him, ready to battle, before the guy crouched down next to him. “Hey buddy.” The duckling pokemon turned to his trainer. “Quax?” “Look, we’re up against the wall.” Flash reasoned. “Should you battle, we’re at a disadvantage two times over. Now, it’s one thing to pull out a win once against this. To do it two times, that’s a lot to ask of any pokemon. If you want to try, I’ll help you battle the best I can. If you don’t, I won’t force you and will forfeit. It’s your decision, and I’ll respect whatever it is.” Once again, Quaxly wasn’t expecting this; however, he was just as happy as when Flash encouraged him to dance. He didn’t know what his choice would have been had his trainer not been like this, but the fact that he was made the water starter want to try. Quaxly stepped onto the field. “Quax!” “Whoa, he really cares for his pokemon, and they reciprocate.” Spike noted. Flash vs Nemona (P. III) “Alright Nemona, we’re ready.” Flash announced. “Quaxly, bust a move!” Just like with Sunset and Shadow, Quaxly began his unrefined dance around the electric type. “Here we come.” Nemona declared, her fighting spirit starting to ignite. “Pawmi, use thunder shook.” “Quaxly, wing attack as hard as possible into the ground.” Flash commanded. Flash would have loved steel wing since he knew from experience that created a far stronger ground, but he simply had to work with what he did have. Fortunately, the ground they battled on wasn’t exactly hard meaning his starter’s wing could manage to dig into it. When thundershock hit the water type, it certainly hurt due to his type disadvantage, but it was far less effective by proxy of the electricity quickly being drawn into the ground. This left Quaxly in relatively good shape. “Pawmi, use quick attack.” Nemona commanded. “Quaxly, do what you can to brace yourself.” Flash ordered. Quaxly did what he could to firm his stance before Pawmi sped into him. Between the firmer stance and wing still in the ground, the water type merely skid back inches before coming to a stop. This is exactly what Flash wanted. “Now move your wing up with all you got.” Flash instructed. “Then, water gun.” Before Nemona could issue her next order, Quaxly rose his wing up with all his might. That tossed up ground debris that got into Pawmi’s eyes forcing him to close them. Essentially, Flash had Quaxly utilized a pseudo sand attack which had also coated the electric type’s body. “Paw!” The electric type cried. “Pawmi!” Nemona shouted. In the following moments, Quaxly fired off his water gun which coated Pawmi and saturated the dirt in his fur. That would weigh the mouse pokemon down, but Nemona noted that switching her next move from quick attack, which wouldn’t be all that quick now, to something else. “Pawmi, use thunder shock.” Nemona declared. Quaxly, pound into the ground and pull vault over Pawmi.” Flash commanded. “Then, end this with water gun.” As Pawmi fired thunder shock, Quaxly pounded his wing into the ground and managed to get over the mouse pokemon. The water starter avoided the incoming attack, and once directly above the electric type, fired the water gun down. It nailed Pawmi, doling out just enough damage to finish the electric type off. As he collapsed to the ground unconscious, Quaxly landed making it official. Flash had managed to bring this down to a one on one. South Providence(Area 1) “Return Pawmi.” Nemona recalled her fallen pokemon. “You were great, so take a good rest.” She then smiled at Flash. “You’ve really put your mind’s all into overcoming me, and it’s ultimately led you to doing better than I expected. You’re legit, Flash!” “I’m just doing the best I can with what my pokemon have.” Flash retorted. “Nothing more, nothing less.” “Let’s see how far that takes you against my remaining pokemon.” Nemona grabbed her starter’s pokeball. “Even though she might be asleep now, we’re not giving up. Battle, Sprigatito!” The grass starter appeared, curled up on the ground, snoozing away from the prior hypnosis. “Alright, let’s keep it up Quaxly.” Flash declared. “Back to busting a move!” “Dang, Flash is truly managing to keep pace with Nemona.” Spike thought. “Just what kind of a trainer was he before this?” Flash vs Nemona (P. IV) Quaxly began his unrefined dance as Sprigatito continued to snooze. “Sprigatito, get up and use bite.” Nemona tried. “There’s no telling when she will wake up, so let’s go for the most damage.” Flash nodded. “Quaxly, use wing attack.” Sprigatito continued snoozing making it easy for Quaxly to land wing attack and dole out one powerful blow. This, consequently, was enough to rouse the grass cat pokemon. She was hurting from all the damage she’d taken. In any regard, Quaxly was already back to dancing around her. “Battling you is a blast!” Nemona grinned. “Better pull out my ace in the hole!” “Ace in the hole?” Flash questioned. She pulled out a dark purple pokeball, with a bright blue gem contained within. She wound it back, as it glowed brilliantly, before throwing it out over Sprigatito. The grass starter was awash with beautiful crystals that quickly faded to reveal the starter had changed. The grass type was now coated in green crystal with a crown composed of crystalized flowers atop her head. Flash didn’t know what this was, but it seemed to, in a way, imbue that pokemon with strength. Kind of like a less drastic Mega Evolution. “Whoa, she can use Terastallization.” Spike noted to himself, amazed. “Terastallizing is always a solid strategy!” Nemona declared. “It gives moves of a pokemon’s Terra Type more power!” “That’s not good for us.” Flash noted. “We’ll need to end this fast.” “Sprigatito, leafage!” Nemona ordered. “Quaxly, dodge while drawing close.” Flash instructed. “Then, end this with your strongest wing attack.” Sprigatito fired off larger leaves than at any point prior, but Quaxly was deft enough to twirl out of their way, missing the attack by mere inches. He then moved in close aiming to close the distance as his wings glowed with flying type energy. “Sprigatito, leafage one more time!” Nemona commanded. The moment Quaxly landed wing attack, Sprigatito let off another leafage resulting in both pokemon being pummeled by super effective damage. The former was hit with a stronger super effective move while the latter had been damaged significantly prior. All of this is to say, both pokemon ultimately rendered each other unconscious. South Providence(Area 1) “You fought well, Quaxly.” Flash returned his starter. “Take a good rest.” Nemona has returned her pokemon as well before approaching Flash with a smile. “Look at you, backed into a corner yet managing to overcome the odds to snag a tie. With everything against you, even that is amazing.” “Yeah, I’ve not seen anyone manage a battle like that before.” Spike added as he joined them. “I’m just glad Quaxly hadn’t come up short in the finals turns there.” Flash noted. “If he hadn’t moved enough, we’d have taken that first boosted leafage and lost.” “Now that I think about it, neither of you could Terastallize your pokemon.” Nemona noted suddenly. “Don’t worry, I’ll see what I can do about getting you taken care of. Even then, that was still a fun battle Flash.” “Speaking of that battle, let’s head over to the nearby pokemon center before heading in.” Flash stated. “Our pokemon could use healing.” “Good idea.” Nemona nodded before the trio made their way over. “Besides, there’s tons of hills, stairs, and stuff within the city. A good breather before heading in is warranted.” Mesagoza After ensuring all their pokemon were good, the trio walked in through the gate and tunnel before ultimately ending up within Mesagoza. The place was huge with beautiful architecture. There were plenty of homes, stores, and stands everywhere. That wasn’t even mentioning the various paths one could take to explore the city. Mind you, the entire place was walled off, so you’d likely end up traversing the whole city eventually no matter what way you chose to walk. “Ah, Mesagoza.” Spike took a deep breath. “Even if it was just a short walk down to Caba Poco and back, a lot happened to the point it feels like it’s been days.” “Alright, we finally made it.” Nemona did address both boys, but she was more focused on Flash since he had moved to Paldea recently. “This is Mesagoza, the biggest city in Paldea. It’s been a trade hub for a long time.” “Yeah.” Spike chimed in. “Lots of folks come here to learn about all kinds of things. There’s hair salons, stores, restaurants, and our academy. Not to mention the Mesagoza Research Lab. It used to be headed by Professors Celestia and Sombra.” “These days, it’s headed by Professor Cadence who studies type triangles beyond the commonly accepted grass, fire, and water.” Nemona continued. “What do you want to see first, Flash?” “Can’t deny the research lab might be cool, but there’ll be time to visit that later.” Flash decided to go with his second thought. “Honestly, I could use some food.” “Heh, I didn’t peg you for a big eater, but that’s smart.” Nemona noted. “I mean, you can’t battle well on a growling stomach, right? Hey Spike, why don’t you take him to a good place to eat while I take off to see about getting you two Tera Orbs?” “Sounds like a plan.” Spike nodded while chuckling. “Since I gave the sandwich I bought to Miraidon, I could use a bite to eat myself.” “It’s settled.” Nemona nodded. “Once you two are done, come meet me in front of the academy. Flash, it’s just straight up from where we stand, but you’ll be with Spike who I believe can see you up there in the event you can’t get back here.” “Yeah, no worries.” Spike declared with a confident smile. “I know Mesagoza like the back of my hands, so I’ll see him up there no problem.” “Later then you two!” Nemona took off. “Get pumped for some Terastallizing!” It did not take long for her to be out of sight. “Guess climbing all those stairs wasn’t as tiring as she let on.” Flash commented. “Yeah, guess so.” Spike shrugged, feeling more comfortable around the guy now. “Anyways, Paldea is famous for its sandwiches.” He started walking. “Come on, I’ll show you the best…” “Stop…those…pokemon!” A rather exhausted voice yelled. Spike and Flash both looked left and spotted some guy desperately chasing after a Bergmite, Cufant, and Mudbray. This guy had brilliant vermillion hair and blue eyes. He was wearing spectacles, a white shirt, dark blue blazer, and jeans. “Spike, Fuecoco to ember Cufant.” Flash ordered as he stepped out grabbing two of his own pokeballs. “I choose you, Quaxly and Ralts! Water gun Mudbray and confusion Bergmite.” “Go, Fuecoco.” Spike joined in as Flash ordered. “Ember that Cufant.” All three attacks hit their marks knocking each pokemon out, one after the other. This indicated they weren’t well trained, which was to be expected if they weren’t listening to their trainer. At least, that’s what Flash assumed. The guy who had been chasing these pokemon pulled up just behind the knocked out pokemon and worked to catch his breath while returning them to their respective pokeballs. Once he returned them all, and seemed to have his breath back, Spike approached. “What happened Sunburst?” Spike asked. “Cadence tasked me with letting the new starters into the coral before taking off to meet up with your brother.” Sunburst informed. “Unfortunately, it appears a section of the fencing was weak to the point the three of them working together were able to break out. I tasked the other assistants with fixing the fencing while I gave chase. If I knew just how quick they were, I’d have brought my Cyclizar with me.” He looked at them both. “Thanks for stepping in.” “No problem.” Flash answered. “Anyways, I must cut this short and get back.” Sunburst was quick to leave back the way he came. “Oh, congratulations on getting into the academy Spike.” Spike smiled after him. “Thanks Sunburst.” It wasn’t long before the guy was gone. “Was there something I wasn’t told during my introduction to Mesagoza?” Flash questioned with a raised eyebrow. “Well, it wasn’t all that important in the moment.” Spike reasoned with a genuine shrug. “My brother, Shining Armor, is the champion of Paldea and Cadence is his wife.” “Ah, that would make her your sister-in-law.” Flash understood. “That’s all you got to say about it?” Spike asked, as they started moving along the streets. “Well, it does make me wonder how you didn’t pick up on Nemona using status moves back in your battle at Caba Poco.” Flash responded. “Come on, you can’t expect me to know every little thing about pokemon.” Spike reasoned. “If I did, what’d be the point of entering the world of school?” “Fair enough.” Flash retorted. Flash wasn’t really the type to care who you were related to, like how certain people might be. It’s not like their title meant you were any better than the next person. “Since I answered your question, it’s only fair you answer one of mine.” Spike suddenly declared, seeing his chance. “You seem knowledgeable, so why are you entering Uva Academy?” “No comment.” Flash answered, sternly. “What?” Spike questioned. “You could have said the same to my question yet chose not to.” Flash retorted. “My reasons for entering Uva Academy are purely my own.” “Seriously, what happened to this guy?” Spike thought. “I mean, he seemed to be warming up, but now he’s just back to being cold. What kind of past makes someone like that?” Spike didn’t think he’d get much of an answer, so he chose to focus on what he was going to eat instead. As for Flash, he was partially lost in old memories while being grateful the boy hadn’t pressed him. It was better than being asked questions he likely would answer the same way. > Arrival > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mesagoza After being shown to the sandwich place, Flash ordered an herbed sausage sandwich while Spike got the bacon sandwich. Given Spike’s prior question about his past, Flash opted to sit alone. Rather than dwell on that, Spike joined a group of rather exuberant tourists keen to conversate. By nature of how they choose to situate themselves, Flash was done with his meal sooner, so he decided to slip outside. The guy already knew how uncooperative he must seem to the younger student, so he’d let the kid continue having his fun. Just as Flash was about to lean against the wall, he froze. Across from him was an older man with medium length red hair and light blue eyes. He wore a red shirt with light gray jeans, and he was looking at Flash with a rather remorseful expression. Not even a moment later, some citizen walked in front of Flash which obscured his view. It couldn’t have taken less than a moment, but by the time the student could see where he had been looking, there wasn’t a trace of the older man. Not even as he scanned the area. “Wishful thinking.” Flash closed his eyes. “After all, what are the odds uncle would be in Paldea too? That’s not even mentioning the fact he has no right to look at me like that.” He took a deep breath and did his best to compose himself. No matter how painful the memories, Flash was past the point of them being debilitating. His gaze soon settled on some guy walking along with an attempted ease yet stumbling. It was a young man with darker blue hair than Flash’s and matching eyes. He wore black shoes, tan pants, and a rather fancy long sleeved blue top which reached partially down his pants. He ended up stumbling a bit too much and fell to his knees to the surprise of the people around him. Flash rushed over, beating out other people who were going to move to help him, and crouched by the guy’s side. “Hey, are you…” Suddenly, one of the guy’s pokeballs opened as a Primeape appeared before aggressively moving towards Flash. This prompted the student to scurry back quickly to the point where he ended up on his butt. A couple of onlookers moved to put hands on his shoulder indicating they got him. “Primeape, it’s okay.” The guy stated. Those words seemed to calm the fighting type who immediately shifted his focus to the guy. Flash noticed a concerned expression grace the fighting type’s face as he moved to help his trainer. “Sorry about that.” The guy was looking at Flash with a weak smile. “Primeape is just overprotective given my…” He suddenly reached for his pocket and pulled out a hanky to cough into it as Primeape helped him up. “…current state.” The guy removed his hanky and was doing his best to hide it from sight. For the most part, he seemed to succeed; however, Flash could have sworn he caught sight of blood splotches as the guy tucked it away. “Prime.” Primeape declared worriedly. “Yeah, let’s go buddy.” The guy chuckled weakly. “Sorry about this everyone.” People watched and whispered as the guy left with his pokemon. “What was that?” “I don’t know.” “That young man seems kind of unwell.” “Even if that’s the case, his pokemon seemed far too aggressive.” Eventually, he was gone before Spike wandered over looking at the gathered people and settling on Flash. “There you are.” He sounded a bit exasperated only to then notice his current state. “Wait, what happened to you?” Flash stood up and dusted himself off. “I’ll tell you on the way to the academy.” He started walking, prompting Spike to follow. As they moved back to the main road up to the academy, Flash filled the younger student in on what happened. Though it was only in context to what happened with that guy. The figure he had seen prior was his ghost to deal with. “Being that sick.” Spike shook his head, concerned. “I hope that guy is okay.” “Same here.” Flash agreed. By this point, they’d already been climbing stairs and were staring to crest the second to last set on their way to the academy. As they reached the top, the pair came upon what looked like two students, wearing altered uniforms, confronting some girl who looked around Flash’s age. She had long sapphire blue hair, with a violet and rose streak, tied up in a pony tail and violet eyes. Her attire was the autumn uniform, glasses, and an Espeon book bag. She seemed rather uncomfortable being in the presence of the guy and girl confronting her. “Don’t you get it?” The girl questioned. “If you join Team Star, you can shine as bright as anybody.” She was met with silence. “Seriously, what’s with you?” The guy asked. “Don’t you want to burn brightly with awesome friends like us?” The properly dressed girl looked away. “Not really…” “Look, we’ve got a quota we’re supposed to fill for new members, so just sign up.” The girl declared. “I’d rather not…” The properly dressed girl responded. “You heard her.” Spike retorted as he walked over. “Spike?” The properly dressed girl questioned, surprised. “Don’t worry Twilight, I got this.” Spike declared. “I may have just gotten my pokemon, but I’ve learned a lot since.” He then turned to the other two students. “She gave you here answer so leave my older sister alone.” “You really want to intrude?” The girl asked. “We’re Team Star, kid. We burn so brightly it hurts to look at us, but you know that already, right?” Flash strolled on over. “How could anyone burn brightly if they go around pressuring people to sign up?” “Ugh, just another ignorant nobody.” The girl was clearly frustrated. “Here I am finally part of Team Star, yet I get no respect. I got to work my way up the ranks.” “Hey, we can’t just let this slide.” The guy declared. “The honor of our team is on the line, so we got to battle them, yeah?” “That’s true.” The girl nodded. “You keep watch on four eyes while I handle them.” She turned before focusing on Spike. “I’ll start handing out lessons with the first kid who stepped in before following it up with the other guy.” “I don’t know if this is a good idea.” Twilight voiced, worried for her brother. “Eh, don’t worry about it.” Flash voiced. “Your younger brother has actually proven himself to have potential as a trainer.” He shrugged. “If you ask me, he’s got them.” “Who even is this guy?” Twilight questioned herself. “That might just be the most positive thing I’ve heard from him yet.” Spike noted before smiling at Twilight. “I finally got some pokemon of my own today, and I’ve learned a lot from Flash.” He focused on his opponent. “Besides, no one tries to strong arm my family.” “This guy taught Spike some stuff?” Twilight questioned internally. “Enough talk.” The girl made a star with her hands. “It’s time to battle!” She retrieved her pokeball. “Burn bright, Maschiff!” Spike grasped and threw out one of his pokeballs. “Go, Fidough!” The fairy type appeared and moved about excitedly. “Yeah, that’s the spirit buddy.” One of the chief things he learned from Flash is to embrace who your pokemon is. “We’re about to have fun!” Spike vs Girl Grunt “Maschiff, use tackle.” The grunt commanded. “Fidough, receive your playmate head on after using growl.” Spike ordered. Fidough growled at Maschiff lowering her attack by one stage before bracing himself to take the tackle like a champ. “Maschiff, use lick.” The grunt ordered. “Fidough, tail whip to the right and avoid that tongue.” Spike commanded. As Maschiff attempted to lick the fairy type, he chased his tail to the right. As such, he avoided the tongue while brushing his tail against the dark type lowering her defense by one stage. “Alright, let’s see you deal with this.” The grunt declared, frustrated. “Use snarl.” Maschiff snarled unleashing dark type sound waves that pushed Fidough back. “Looks like they aren’t too happy with our defensive play, so let’s swap to something offensive.” Spike declared. “Fidough, tackle.” “Maschiff, meet them head on with your own tackle.” The grunt instructed. The pokemon charged one another, but when they clashed, it was evident who had the advantage. Due to her attack and defense being lowered, Fidough had no problem overcoming the dark type. He landed a strong blow that sent the rascal pokemon collapsing to her belly. “Maschiff, get up and tackle again.” The grunt commanded. “Fidough, end this with your lick.” Spike ordered. As Maschiff attempted to stand, Fidough ran in licking the dark type. She shuddered as the damage took effect before collapsing to the ground unconscious. Mesagoza The female grunt returned her pokemon. “How am I the one seeing stars!?” Spike ran out and picked his pokemon up. “Way to go Fidough!” The fairy type licked his trainer’s face. “Heh, you were spectacular.” Twilight was stunned as she turned to Flash. “You really taught my brother how to battle like that?” “It’s more he learned through observation.” Flash responded. “My starter simply likes to dance as his preferred movement option, so I’ve supported that. Basically, don’t fight your pokemon. Fight with your pokemon.” Twilight began to think. “A nobody like you being so good at battling just isn’t right.” The female grunt declared. “A nobody?” Spike questioned before smiling. “Consider me whatever you want, but one day this nobody will have defeated the champion!” “I don’t know about that, but this kid still beat you.” The male grunt stated, intimidated. “Does that mean I got to battle him now since I’m higher up Team Star’s ranks!?” “Pero bueno!” Nemona had arrived down the steps and sounded offended. “What do you two think you’re doing!?” “Ugh, it’s that student council dweeb!” The female grunt declared. She’ll report us if we don’t book it.” The male grunt added. “I can’t believe you, Spike and Flash.” Nemona declared as she approached. “You don’t need to find randos to battle. You’ll have all the battles you’ll ever need with me.” “That’s not really what happened.” Spike voiced with a sweat drop. “While I do believe we are free to battle whoever we like, it was actually those punks over there who started this.” Flash voiced. “The pair of them were pressuring this girl here, so we stepped in with Spike taking the battles.” “Oh wow.” Nemona realized. “I read the situation wrong. Sorry.” She looked at the opposing pair. “So, Team Star is out here strong-arming people again?” “We weren’t doing that…” The female grunt responded nervously. “Well, that explains it.” Nemona did not buy those words for a second. “As the head of the student council, stopping this type of nonsense would normally be my job, but this does present the perfect opportunity. As I told you both earlier, I worked on securing Tera Orbs for the both of you; however, even my word has its limit.” She took out a sole Tera Orb. “Unfortunately, only one of you can have and use this while the other will simply have to earn one themselves.” “This isn’t the first time I’ve had to earn something for my pokemon.” Flash shrugged. “Give the orb to Spike.” “Alright.” Nemona rushed to Spike and put the Tera Orb in his hand. “Then, this is now my gift to you. With it, you can Terastallize your pokemon during battle; however, they only work once. Additionally, almost any pokemon has a Tera Type that matches their type. There are exceptions, but let’s stick to the basics. For instance, your Fidough here would be a Fairy type while Flash’s Ralts could be a Fairy or Psychic Tera Type. Now, time for you to give it a whirl.” She ran back a bit. “You’ll learn to use it faster in battle.” Spike was raring to give this a go. “Sounds good.” “Whoa, wait just a moment.” The male grunt spoke up. “You want this kid here to practice wailing on us with his Tera Pokemon?” “Got a problem” Nemona asked. “You want to battle me instead?” “Never mind.” The male grunt was terrified. “I’ll take my chances with the new kid.” “Then, take your places and battle!” Nemona declared. “Return for now Fidough.” Spike returned his fairy type while the grunt moved back from him. The male grunt made the star in the air before throwing out his pokemon. “Burn bright, Deino!” The little dragon type gave a small roar. Spike selected his starter’s pokeball. “Go, Fuecoco!” The fire type appeared with his goofy smile. Spike vs Male Grunt Spike threw the Tera Orb over Fuecoco, and the fire starter was awash with beautiful crystals. They quickly faded to reveal he was now coated in red crystal with a crown composed of a candelabra. “Deino, use dragon breath.” The grunt ordered. “Fuecoco, let’s put your fire to the test with ember.” Spike commanded. Deino breathed out dragon energy while Fuecoco fired his ember. As it was naturally larger and stronger, due to the Terastallization, it tore through the breath attack before impacting with Deino. “That’s the way Fuecoco, now…” Spike began. He stopped as Fuecoco suddenly began belting out something that resembled music. It wasn’t necessarily good or bad, but it did project normal energy that further damaged the dark/dragon type. “What?” Spike questioned. “That was the move round.” Flash called out. “It means your starter is growing stronger, just as my Quaxly grew stronger by picking up wing attack.” “Alright, let’s keep this up with another ember.” Spike declared happily. “Deino, dodge before using tackle.” The grunt ordered. Deino managed to avoid the oncoming ember before rushing in and tackling Fuecoco, pushing him back. “Keep it up with a bite.” The male grunt ordered. “Show them we aren’t that slow on the uptake.” Spike declared. “Finish this with round.” As Deino got close to biting down on the fire type, he belted out that sound once more. The resulting normal energy was enough to push Deino back before he ultimately collapsed unconscious. Mesagoza The male grunt folded forward in defeat before returning his pokemon. “Man, you’re pokemon burned brightly…” “Nice Spike!” Nemona nodded. “You pulled off Terastallization no problem, but if you want to do it again, you’ll need to hand it over to a Nurse Joy any time you visit a Pokemon Center.” “Anyways, we’ll be on our way.” The male grunt declared. “Hasta la vistaarrr!” “Yeah, hasta la vistaarrr!” The female grunt added. The pair ran off. “What exactly is their deal?” Flash questioned. “Team Star is basically a group of students that like to kick up trouble.” Nemona explained while Twilight, out of their eye sight, looked away dejectedly. “They hardly show up to any class, and when they’re together in groups, they can be a real headache.” “H-hey.” Twilight interjected as she wanted to leave. “Thanks for stepping in Spike…you’ve clearly got a grasp of battling at this point.” She nodded to Flash. “Thank you, for showing him the ropes. Now, I’m going.” She ran off while Spike was left staring after her. “There is something I can add.” “What is that Spike?” Nemona asked interested. “Twilight wouldn’t say much to anyone in the family, no matter how hard we tried, but roughly 18 months prior she was sent to Sinnoh.” Spike crossed his arms. “From what little I managed to dig up, it coincides with this huge mess Team Star seemed to have caused at the school.” “Hm, around that time is also when the academy received a whole new staff.” Nemona added thoughtfully. “Could any of that really be attributed to Team Star?” Flash questioned. “I mean, they seem more like a nuisance, both in how they act and Nemona described them.” “I don’t know.” Spike shook his head with a sigh. “I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but Twilight started acting differently not long before she was sent to Sinnoh. Now that I’m in Uva academy myself, I want to find the truth.” “Well, I wish I could help you more, but I’ve just told you everything I knew.” Nemona shrugged. “Sorry.” “Eh, it’s fine.” Spike shook his head. “I didn’t imagine finding answers would be easy nor that I’d wrap it all up on my first day.” “Anyways, with this trouble dying down, we should get up to the academy.” Flash declared. “Yeah.” Nemona sighed. “Just get ready to climb the worst staircase in the world.” Nemona took off running. “She’d probably find them bearable by walking.” Flash muttered as he started doing just that. Spike followed, and the pair ended up at the top of the stairs just as Nemona was rushing inside. Uva Academy was truly a sight to behold, being both large and having multiple floors. Other students were mulling about wherever you looked. Uva Academy Flash and Spike entered the entrance hall which was truly huge which all kinds of doors leading to other parts of the academy. There were many bookshelves containing countless books, many desk scattered about, and a receptionist desk. Nemona stood just ahead of that. “This here’s the entrance hall.” Nemona informed as the guys joined her. “From here, there are many different ways one could take to reach different parts of the school.” “It’s going to take a minute to learn my way around.” Spike commented. Flash didn’t say a word as he continued to look at his surroundings. “Masters Armor and Sentry. Miss Nemona.” Clavell greeted as he approached the trio. “How was your first school commute?” “It was a blast!” Spike declared happily. “I imagine Miss Nemona’s high spirits helped with that.” Clavell reasoned. “She’s a true asset to our fine academy. Though, I expect nothing less from our champion-ranked student council president. Reliable as ever, Miss Nemona.” “I will say that not everything about the commute was peaceful.” Flash spoke up. “A group, Team Star as I would learn, were down the stairs from the academy.” “There were harassing my sister, Twilight.” Spike added. “That is quite the news.” Clavell stated. “Are they still down there?” “Actually, Spike managed to run them off.” Nemona voiced. “You don’t say…” Clavell turned to the younger student. “Of course, it’s a fine thing to help a fellow student, even finer to help family. Still, you may wish to show just a bit of restraint as you find your footing here at the academy. For all three of you, do remember that the staff here can help resolve such trouble. On that note, Miss Nemona would you be kind enough to report to Miss Luna about this Team Star business? As your homeroom teacher, she should be kept appraised of such things.” “Understood sir.” Nemona declared. “Ah, look at the time.” Clavell noted. “You three better hurry along for class will begin soon.” “We’re in Class 1-A you two.” Nemona turned to the boys. “I’ll show you the way.” Class 1-A: A Bit Later… Compared to the extravagance of the entrance hall, most classrooms could seem rather standard. They had windows, twelve sets of desks, with each set comprised of two desks next to each other, and the teacher’s desk. Luna stood there wearing a lavender short sleeved top, underneath a white lab coat, purple jeans, and white shoes. Before her were all her homeroom students, of which Nemona was one of them. Flash and Spike were currently outside the room waiting. “Good morning, Miss Luna.” The class declared. “Good morning, everyone.” Luna greeted. “Before we begin today’s usual, we have something new. Starting today, two students will be joining our homeroom.” Flash and Spike entered before standing beside her desk. “Please, introduce yourselves.” “Hey everyone!” Spike greeted happily. “My name is Spike!” “Did you hear that? He seems super friendly and fun!” “I’m Flash.” Flash responded simply. “He’s calm and seems cool.” “Looks like everyone’s eager to know you two.” Luna noted. “Who has the first question for either of these two?” “I got this! What do you two like most about pokemon?” “I like playing with pokemon.” Spike answered “Really? Awesome! I’m totally the same!” “Battling.” Flash answered simply. “That’s cool to, I guess.” “I have a question.” Nemona declared as she stood. “You two went through all the trouble of enrolling, so what do you hope to gain? You must have some kind of dream, right?” “I want to be a strong trainer!” Spike declared. “My dreams are my own; however, I will say they require me to be a strong trainer.” Flash responded. “Though, I will amend that my strength will be the right kind.” Spike glanced at Flash as he once again wondered just what this guy’s deal was. This time, his response even drew Nemona’s attention. “Well, thank you both for speaking on yourselves.” Luna nodded. “I’m Miss Luna. Among my duties as your homeroom teacher, I also teach biology. Flash, your seat is in the second row from the front. Spike, you will be in the first row on the left.” The pair moved to take their respective seats as homeroom got underway. > Set Stage > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uva Academy: Classroom, After Homeroom… Flash and Spike started not long into the start of the year, so there wasn’t an immense amount of expectation. Even then, things were open ended at Uva Academy. Naturally, there are classes one can/should take; however, the structure wasn’t set in stone. All you really had to do was let the receptionist know you’d be attending a class and show up naturally. None of that accounted for the fact that there were days of the week without classes. All of this is to say that Flash stood up intending to have a look around the academy. Hallway Flash exited homeroom with his hands in his pockets. “I’ll see what there is to see before attempting to find my dorm room.” “Wait up Flash!” Spike called out as he exited the classroom after him. “Are you going to have a look around the academy?” “Yeah, figured I might as well take a look.” Flash responded. “Do you mind if I come with you?” Spike asked. Flash truly confused Spike. While he could come off as cold and a bit jerkish, the walk to the academy showed he wasn’t truly like that. While he clearly didn’t want to talk with strangers about his past, perhaps he’d be more willing to confide in a friend. Flash shrugged, indifferent. “Do what you want.” Flash had walked to the academy with Nemona and Spike because the director arranged it that way, and he didn’t care one way or the other. He supposed that was this situation in a nutshell. A sort of compromise between isolation and truly opening himself to people again. It’s not that he didn’t trust people, if anything his prior problem was that he hadn’t put nearly enough trust in arguably the people closest to him. It’s more that he wasn’t looking for negative emotions in more people who just didn’t understand what he’d been through. Despite how his prior mindset came about, he laid the blame for it on himself. It was his reactions to external problems which led to his downward spiral. In essence, he knew he messed up, that it was all his fault. He didn’t need more confirmation or anyone else’s pity. Cafeteria Flash and Spike ended up seeing many classrooms with quite a few of them having a variety of uses for various classes Uva Academy offered. It was certainly confirmed that this academy wasn’t just large for the sake of it. Eventually, the pair ended up within one of the school’s cafeterias where various students were chowing down on dishes. An entire staff was in an open kitchen cooking up meals as well. Before the pair could leave, Sunset approached them. “So, we meet again.” Sunset voiced. “You two remember me, right?” Both students remembered her from the lighthouse; however, Flash specifically remembered how unhelpful she’d been to Nemona. While he still didn’t consider the girl a friend per say, she’d still done him a kindness. “Can’t seem to recall.” Flash retorted. Sunset rolled her eyes. “Oh, real funny.” “Eh, seems justified.” Flash shrugged. “After all, you get back the energy you put in.” “Wouldn’t that mean you’ll both just be giving each other the same energy back?” Spike asked. “Fair, to both of you.” Sunset crossed her arms with a sigh. “I was going to ask him for a favor; however, I can see now that won’t exactly go well unless there’s something in it for him. From what I hear, you want to be a strong trainer.” “Depends.” Flash now crossed his arms. “You may not have heard everything correctly since I only want to be strong the right way.” “No, I’ve heard.” Sunset nodded. “I have a potential challenge for you.” Flash stared critically at this girl before Spike gently nudged his side with an elbow. “Come on, it can’t hurt to at least hear her out.” “Fine.” Flash sighed. “I’m listening.” “I’m looking to make a dream of mine a reality.” Sunset began. “Truth is, I’m big on cooking with a particular specialty in making sandwiches.” She pulled out a magenta book and began flipping through it. “Right now, I’m researching recipes to make pokemon feel better. I found this book the other day, and it has a section on these Herba Mystica things. Basically, they’re herbs that heal pokemon as soon as they eat them. Based on what I’ve read, there are five in total that are said to be found around Paldea and are rare to boot. This book always says they’re guarded by Titan Pokemon, meaning it’s going to be tough to grab these herbs. Check it, they got to be things like this, and I bet they’d be a good challenge for someone like you.” Sunset turned the book around to reveal the left page had two sketches. The top was of a prehistoric looking Donphan while the bottom was of a futuristic, robotic looking Donphan. The right page contained information. "As we descended further into Area Zero, we began to catch glimpses of mysterious pokemon—though we wondered if these compact, cruel and huge, ferocious beasts were indeed pokemon at all. Two of our team suffered brutal blows from such beasts and were mortally wounded, forcing us to retreat for a time.” She then flipped the page to showcase two photos, in the same orientation as the sketches, with more information on the following right page. “Members of the survey team managed to capture these photographs. I notice they bore passing resemblances to the pokemon known as Donphan, yet there exists clear differences. The first’s sheer size and shape of its back set it apart—as do its great tusks. The second’s texture and way it moves suggest it is biologically separate—to say nothing of its treads of iron." “I wish to procure these herbs myself, but I’m not too good at battling pokemon.” Sunset shook her head. “Unfortunately, I don’t really have friends with strong pokemon who could lend me a hand, and I’d never hear the end of it if I went crawling to Nemona.” “Well, I’ll be traveling Paldea anyways to do the gym challenge once the season starts.” Flash uncrossed his arms. “I suppose I could make it a point to keep an eye out for these Titan Pokemon, if for nothing else than they should be good training.” “Works for me.” Sunset nodded, as their phones came out and exchanged numbers. “I’ll compile what I have and send over the potential locations of Titans later.” She started to walk past him but not before handing over an envelope. “In the meantime, have this as a show of good faith.” Flash looked at the envelope he’d been given with a raised eyebrow. It was your standard envelope which already was open yet seemed to contain whatever was inside. Sunset’s full name was written out on it in some form of formal writing. By this point, Sunset had already taken off. “What is it?” Spike asked. Flash didn’t respond as he took out the contents of the envelop finding a letter and key card. “To whom this letter concerns, You are invited as a special guest to the First Annual Los Platos Battles, starting the day after Uva Academy announces its independent study assignment. You do not need this letter to join the tournament, but it, along with the included key card, are for the villa you will be allowed to use for the duration of your stay. Signed, The Platos Battle Committee” “Huh, lucky you.” Spike noted. “I suppose so.” Flash voiced, putting the contents back in the envelop before safely tucking it away on his person. Suddenly, both their Rotom Phones went off before coming out to show the boys who was calling. They both saw an exact mirror of an unknown number before the person on the other end started talking. Whoever this was had called them simultaneously. “Are you Flash Sentry and Spike Armor, respectively?” The two boys shared a look since this voice sounded synthetic. It didn’t sound like it could belong to a real person, and it shifted from masculine to feminine. It seemed someone was going to great lengths to hide their voice. “Yeah, that’s us.” Spike answered. “I hacked your phones to speak with you both; however, I was uncertain if you’d be together. Hope you don’t mind.” “So, you’ve basically overtaken both our phones.” Flash stated. “My name is Cassiopeia; however, I didn’t do this to talk about myself. No, I wish to talk about you two. You’re trainers with serious potential. If that’s accurate, then there’s something I must ask of you. Tell me, you know of Team Star?” “Team Star.” Spike went wide eyed at that. “You know something about them?” “I’ll take that as you know of them. Team Star are a group of troublemakers who were formed by some academy students awhile back. They caused headaches for the school and attempted to bring other students down to their level. I refuse to sit by and let them get away with it. That’s why I’ve come up with a plan to bring Team Star down and force them to disband. I call it, Operation Starfall; however, I’m in need of allies, and I’d like two of them to be the two of you.” “Take down Team Star…” Spike pondered on that. “Team Star.” Flash’s mind flashed back to what they were doing to that girl, Twilight. “They don’t seem as bad as Teams Magma and Aqua, but I can see why they’d need to be stopped.” “We’ll discuss the details some other time, until then.” Before Flash or Spike could speak on what just happened, Clavell entered the room. “Ah, Masters Armor and Sentry.” He nodded. “Please, do try to keep your voices down if you’re making calls within the school, won’t you?” “Of course, sir/I’ll be more careful.” Spike/Flash responded. “Good, then on you go young men.” Once they were gone, Clavell looked off to the side in thought. “Team Star…” Hallways After getting well away from the cafeteria, Spike looked Flash’s way. “What do you think of what Cassiopeia had to say?” “No comment.” Flash responded, his mind was still on Aqua and Magma. Spike remembered the last time Flash said that, so he merely sighed before deciding to focus on seeing the rest of the school with this guy. See the school the pair would as they’d continue to find various classrooms. Staff Room Eventually, Flash and Spike ended up entering the staff room where various teachers were going about their day. Nemona was also here talking with a tall, broad-shouldered guy who had blue eyes and neck length, two toned blue hair. He wore a gray undershirt, lavender pants, black wrist bands with matching boots, and a purple overshirt with a Terastallization gem depicted on the back. His sleeves were rolled one fourth of the way up his respective arms. “Very well, Champion Nemona.” The man nodded. “I will entrust you with handling this in my stead.” “Sure thing!” Nemona declared. “You can count on me. In fact, I bet this will be fun.” “I’m glad to hear it.” He turned away from her. “Good day then.” As the guy moved to leave, Flash and Spike drew closer. “Spike, the uniform looks good on you little brother.” “Thanks Shining.” Spike responded. “It feels good to be wearing it.” “I wish we could talk more; however, I must be off.” Shining voiced. “I understand.” Spike nodded. “I was outside of Mesagoza, so it must have been a no brainer to meet up with Cadence, using whatever free time you had.” Shining smiled and nodded before taking his leave. “I take it that’s your older brother?” Flash asked. “Yep, that’s Shining Armor.” Spike declared proudly. “His strength is second only to Nemona.” “We also call him La Primera.” Nemona voiced as she joined the pair. “I might be stronger than he is, but there’s a reason Shining still stands as the one who heads our region’s league. He’s the person any pokemon trainer should strive to be.” “As the one who stands atop the league, it’ll mean he’s the final challenge between me and Champion Rank.” Flash thought. “This does remind me, remember in homeroom when I asked you two what your dreams were?” Nemona asked and received nods in return. “Since your hearts are set on becoming strong trainers, you should aim for Champion Rank like me.” “One of my goals is to defeat my brother, so I’m already on board.” Spike declared. “I have my reasons for reaching your rank as well.” Flash alluded. “Oh wow, hang on you two.” Nemona smiled, loving their enthusiasm. “I have a whole spiel I want to give. The trainers who reach Champion Rank are the ones who raise their pokemon to be strong. They’re pro-tier battlers whose moves keep crowds on the edge of their seats. To even get a shot at the rank, you must do more than simply take classes here. First, you must win eight badges from across Paldea. Then, you got to win the Mesagoza Conference, a huge tournament where everyone competes to crown a sole victor. As a Champion Ranked Trainer myself, I can’t compete there again. Anyways, the victor is given the right to take the Champion’s Assessment. If you pass all that entails, you’re a champion. I reached that rank on our school’s last Treasure Hunt.” “Treasure Hunt?” Flash questioned. “It’s the school’s independent study which usually happens around the start of gym season.” Spike informed, remembering Twilight and Shining telling him about it. “It happens not long after the start of Uva’s scholastic year to boot.” “It’s great!” Nemona cheered. “You get to leave school on an adventure and learn however you see fit.” She crossed her arms, deep in thought. “I suppose you could say my journey to become champion was the treasure I found…maybe? I don’t know if it’s the answer I truly sought.” “Look for one’s own treasure.” Flash muttered. “Here, let me save their locations to your maps.” Nemona voiced as their phones popped out and information was exchanged. “There we go, give it some thought.” She then took off, leaving the pair standing there…before there was a dinging signifying an announcement. “Calling Master’s Armor and Sentry to the director’s office.” That got the boys’ attention. “Once again, Master’s Armor and Sentry to the director’s office.” “Oh no.” Spike was worried. “Think Director Clavell wants to reprimand us for talking to loudly in the cafeteria?” “Fairly certain he’d have taken us to his office himself if that’s what this was about.” Flash walked out the door. “Whatever comes, it can’t be that bad.” He shrugged. “It’s just our first day after all.” Spike found himself agreeing with the points the older student made, but even if he didn’t, it wouldn’t change the fact that they’d been requested to the office. Director’s Office Clavell’s office was rather large to the point Flash would not put it past this being the place where every teacher met when something important needed discussing. Clavell himself sat at a desk on the other side of the room from the door. Both boys approached. “Thank you for coming, you two.” Clavell greeted. “Have you been enjoying your time here at Uva Academy?” “Yeah, it’s great sir.” Spike responded positively. Flash shrugged. “No complaints here.” “That is wonderful to hear.” Clavell responded genuinely before standing. “Now, you may be wondering why we could not have simply conversed in the cafeteria.” He walked away from his desk and towards a large TV. “Let me assure you, there is a reason I’ve asked you here. It seems a couple of friends of mine have rather serious matters they would like to discuss with you two.” “Sir, no one else is in this room.” Spike commented. “They would not be.” Clavell responded. “Join me before the screen you two. They should connect with us shortly.” The boys approached before the screen turned on to display two professors, one male and one female. The woman was slender yet tall with magenta eyes. She had long, multi-toned hair, being light cerulean, turquoise, blue, and pink, in a neatly kept ponytail. She wore a gold bodysuit with white outlines resembling circuit lines underneath her white lab coat. The man had a wild mane of black hair with red eyes. He wore no shirt with a necklace adorned with sharp teeth, black pants with red boots, and his lab coat. “Hello Flash and Spike.” The woman greeted. “It is nice to meet the two of you.” “My name is Professor Sombra, and this is Professor Celestia.” The man, Sombra, picked up. “We carry out research within the Great Crater of Paldea, at a site known as Area Zero.” “Celestia and Sombra, they’re Sunset’s parents.” Flash noted. “These professors are alumni of our fine academy and have become splendid researchers.” Clavell informed. “Allow us to get straight to the point.” Sombra declared. “Flash, student ID number 805C393 and Spike, student ID number 805C394. You are the students who travel with Koridon and Miraidon, right?” “That’s right.” Spike stated. “Thank you for your honesty.” Celestia nodded. “We appreciate a swift resolution in confirming this fact. Ah, not that we meant to offend you. In fact, we wish for your assistance.” “Assistance with what?” Flash asked. Suddenly, Koridon and Miraidon popped out their respective pokeballs. “Ah, it is good to see you two are well.” Celestia voiced. “It has been a little while since we last met.” They both seemed happy to see the professors. “Koridon and Miraidon were once in our care.” Sombra informed. “I once held Koridon’s pokeball while Celestia held Miraidon’s. I assume you two fell into their possession from Sunset.” “She challenged one of us to a battle to see if we had what it took to control them.” Flash responded. “I beat her and acquired both before passing Miraidon’s pokeball to Spike.” “Well, we are no longer in a position where we can look after them ourselves.” Celestia informed. “As such, we hope you two will continue to look after them on our behalf.” “No problem here.” Spike declared. “Eh, I can keep an eye on him.” Flash added. “We do appreciate your agreement.” Celestia stated. “Both have been greatly weakened and are incapable of battle; however, they can take on a form fit for mobility.” “In all likelihood, it will require time for them to regain their former capabilities.” Sombra informed. “We shall provide you both with our contact information if you would get out your phones.” Their phones sprang forth and received the info. “We will be in regular contact going forward to keep tabs on your status.” Celestia informed. “Until then.” Both then walked off screen before it turned off. The two pokemon grew close to the screen, clearly not wanting them to vanish. Flash and Spike moved to comfort the two pokemon. “Could these pokemon have their origins within Area Zero?” Clavell muttered before shaking his head. “Celestia…Sombra…Don’t tell me you two did it.” The boys soon got the pokemon to return. “Well, it seems the professors are asking quite the favor of you two. Of course, the academy will always be here to support you in any way we are able. I do hope you will continue to enjoy your school life, together with those pokemon.” “Thank, director.” Spike stated genuinely. “If you can do anything to aid me, I’ll come to you.” Flash added. With this meeting concluded, the boys began to leave only for Nemona to enter. “Oh, you’re both still here.” She laughed. “Oof, getting called into the directors’ office on the first day. How ever did you two get in that much trouble?” “Hey, it wasn’t like that!” Spike defended. “Relax Spike, I was just kidding.” Nemona grinned. “I know it wasn’t like that. Anyways, Ms. Luna wanted me to show you to your dorms. You’re very own, private rooms. Let’s go check them out.” They both followed Nemona out. Spike’s Room These rooms were something else, more like a small apartment. They had a dedicated bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. There was a hot plate, microwave, sink, shelving, desk, bed, and wardrobe. “This here is your room Spike while your room is just three doors down on the right Flash.” Nemona informed. “Good.” Flash opened the door and walked out. “I’m going to my room and hitting the hay.” “Looks like someone is worn out.” Nemona noted. “Anyways, see you tomorrow, Spike. “Yeah.” Spike nodded. “Take care, Nemona.” The girl nodded back before taking off. Once she was gone, Spike closed his door to have some time to unwind. He didn’t feel tired enough to sleep, so he figured he’d get a better lay of his room now that he had the time.
