> A New Family > by Mlp4ever > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Prologue A New Development > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Princess Luna was worried. Granted she worried a lot being the sole ruler of Equestria, but things just didn't seem to be going to her way. It wasn't enough that Nobles were constantly badgering over their petty problems, but she had only ten years before her sister returned. If Celestia was returning as herself, it wouldn't be a problem. However, she was returning as another version of herself known as: Sky Striker . Many ponies of the present time either thought Sky Striker was a myth, a made up story to scare misbehaving foals, or as the radical secret societies thought, she was the rightful ruler of Equestria. And that she was unfairly banished by her sister for trying to maintain the order of day and night. And that Luna only raised the sun because she realized that no sunlight would destroy life on earth. The simple fact was that Celestia didn't like how ponies and other creatures disregarded her sister a thousand years ago. She was going to force them to listen and take notice of her sister by refusing to raise the sun. This didn't really change her appearance, but she felt that the name 'Celestia' was used by an older sister who didn't do enough to protect her younger sister. Luna tried to reassure her sister that she was happy and that ponies would eventually appreciate her, but she didn't listen. And that day when she refused to raise the sun, Luna was forced to banish her own sister. She had used "The Elements of Harmony" in the hopes of helping Celestia see reason, but instead sent Celestia to the sun. Creating the mare face that marred the sun's surface. Worse still, The Elements of Harmony no longer responded to her. And her student who appeared to be the next bearer of the element of magic, Starlight Glimmer. Starlight had been full of promise and ability magically speaking, but she was impatient. Starlight expected great things given to her right away. But things didn't go that way. And Luna had made the foalish mistake of showing her a magic mirror of possibilities. Whatever Starlight had seen made her examine the mirror and then entered a whole another world. And before she could go in after her, the portal closed. What was she going to do? All the sudden she heard somepony entering her study. At first, she feared that it was the Nobels or her assistant Ink Well. But to her delight, it was her niece Sunset Shimmer. Sunset was an orphan. She had no blood relation. She was an alicorn like Luna, she was yellow furred with red and yellow mane with green eyes. The younger alicorn was a blessing. Giving her somepony to talk to. She still remembered the first day she met the pony was to become her niece. Flashback Luna was visiting the Canterlot orphanage. She always tried to make sure that everypony was being taken care of. She was walking along the hallways when she heard somepony talking. Turning the corner while still keeping out of sight. "Look it's the freaky blank flank." Said a young male voice. P-please... just l-leave me alone." Said a young female voice. "Look, I think she going to cry."Said another male voice. Luna looked in saw a young Sunset Shimmer being bothered by two young colts. One black with a silver mane and a bow and arrow cutie mark, and one who was white with a red mane and a writers quill and parchment cutie mark. "You know, it's really bad for you." Said the first one."Because at least we've got a chance to get out of here. Who's going to want a freak like you?" "What is going on here my little ponies?" Luna asked deciding to intervene. "Pr-pr-princess." Said the boys scared to have been caught bullying by the ruler of Equestria. "You should not pick on others."Admonished Luna. "You never know how things will change. I suggest you think about that and leave this filly alone." "Y....yes Y....your Highness." Said the second colt. The two ran off, leaving Luna alone with the younger alicorn. "There... there. The bullies are gone. Everything will be alright." Luna reassured. "W-why did you h--help me?" Asked Sunset. Because everypony deserves to be loved." Luna reassured Sunset by wrapping her wing around the filly. End of Flashback That had been five years ago. Sunset had been eight at the time. She was thirteen now. The two had had a happy life together. Sunset was one of the few who knew that Luna's sister was no myth, and the real reason for her banishment. The two alicorn in the room had been a little more than lost souls, but they were happy with each other. "Auntie, are you okay?" Asked Sunset. "Yes Sunset, I'm alright." Luna said with a sigh."Just tired of these Nobels." "Like I'm going to fall for that?" Sunset asked. "You're thinking of her aren't you?" "I can't help it Sunset!" Luna exclaimed."I love my sister! Even so, I have to somehow protect my little ponies." "You'll think of something Auntie, you always do." Sunset said reassuringly." But might I suggest a walk outside? Maybe near your school? It might clear your head." Luna didn't know why but she decided to follow Sunset's advice. The day was beautiful even if she hated seeing her sister's face on the sun. She was actually at the school when something unusual happened. All the sudden, there was a magical boom clear across the sky. And a yellow lighting bolt filled the sky. But that only kept Luna's attention a little. Because the ceiling of 'Luna's School of Stellar Unicorns' broke. It was the ceiling above the examination room, broken by the head of a dragon. She decided to see what was going on herself. Upon entering she saw a huge magical flare. At the center was a little filly. It was obvious that this had been the egg test. And that the filly had hatched the dragon's egg. The rest of the ponies in the room were potted plants. A result of the filly's magic. Luna put a gentle hoof on the young filly. The rest of ponies turned back into ponies and the baby dragon back into a baby. The filly's eyes cleared. When she saw who was standing before her, she was afraid. "I'm sorry! I-I..." She said afraid. "You have an amazing ability young one." Luna said. "Huh?!" Said Twilight. "But you must learn to control those abilities. I would like to take you on as my apprentice." Luna said in a friendly voice. "Huh?!" Twilight gasped. "Go ahead Twilight... that is a great opportunity." Said her caretaker. "Miss Kind Heart?!" Luna exclaimed. "Yes Princess... Twilight is another orphan." Miss Kind Heart explained. "Oh.." Luna said in surprise and then noticed something."There's something else Twilight." She pointed to Twilight's flank. And Twilight gasped. "My cutie mark?! Yesyesyesyes!" She said while prancing around the ruler of Equestria without a care in the world. > Chapter 1 New Arrival > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunset was confused. She felt the magical vibration, but didn't know it's meaning. But she had a feeling that whatever it was would prove to be significant. Almost as if it had something to do with the future. The only thing that she knew for certain was the magical 'boom' she heard and what looked like some magical Lightning Bolt filled the sky. Little did she know that life in Equestria would be forever change because of that Magical Bolt. But that wasn't her main concern right now. Right now, she was dealing with a young unicorn Star Chaser. Star Chaser was a young male unicorn. He was about 7 years old, with a sea blue body, teal mane and tail, violet eyes, and a shooting star cutie mark. Despite the name and cutie mark he wasn't interested in studying the stars. He wanted to be a Royal Guard like his father had been. Maybe even become Princess Luna's personal bodyguard. He was intrigued by anything to do with Equestria's government. But at this moment he was practicing protecting Luna by 'protecting' Sunset from stray squirrels and chipmunks. Sunset tried to keep a straight face as she watch Star Chaser going in front of her looking for anything suspicious. She smiled. One day she knew that if Star Chaser stayed on the path he was on, he could make a fine guard. Maybe even Captain of the Guard. She was actually going to suggest that they go inside and go to the Palace Library when she saw her Aunt Luna returning. But she wasn't alone. She had a young unicorn filly with her. This surprised Sunset. She knew her Aunt had gone to her school but she hadn't excepted her to bring somepony back. She decided to go and talk to her Aunt. Star Chaser saw Sunset heading for Aunt and ran ahead of her. "Hello Princess Luna, Your Majesty." He said stopping in front of her and throwing a wobbly salute."How are you doing today?" "At ease Star Chaser." Luna said with a smile. "You staying out of trouble?" "Yes ma'am." He said with a smile. "Who is this, Aunt Luna?" Sunset asked eyeing Twilight. "This is Twilight Sparkle, Sunset." Luna said stepping aside so that Sunset could get a better view of the filly. "She is also my new apprentice." This was a surprise to Sunset. Her Aunt hardly ever took on an apprentice. But whenever she did, she had a reason for it. But what caused it? Did it have to do with the magical vibration she felt earlier? Maybe. But whatever the case she had to talk to Luna. Star Chaser meanwhile, was fascinated by the appearance of the new filly. He didn't know what a 'apprentice' was, but he always interested in a new face. He was right in front of the leg shielding the filly. "Hi I'm Star Chaser! Do you wanna play?" He said with a smile on his face. "Okay." Twilight mumbled. The two foals went to play and Sunset went into the castle to talk to her Aunt. When they were back in back in the study Sunset went into her Aunt. She could not believe what was going on. And she was going to tell her so. Even though she was only 13 she was very opinionated. And this was one of the few times that it really showed. "Another apprentice Aunt Luna, REALLY?! " she shouted. "Don't you remember what happened the last time you took on an apprentice?! Is this because of your sister that you're doing this?!" "Yes I remember Sunset, but life goes on." Luna retorted. "And I wasn't planning on taking on an apprentice anytime soon, if ever, but Twilight Sparkle is a special case. She displays a special talent in magic and has a level of magic at the same level as an Alicorn. And on top of everything else, she is an orphan. She hasn't even been adopted. So try and be patient with her." "An orphan?" Sunset asked an eyebrow raised in curiosity."Why hasn't she been adopted? What happened to her parents?" "You don't want to know." Was all Luna would say on the subject. "But try to remember how you felt at that age Sunset, and try to help her as much as you can. "First Star Chaser, now Twilight Sparkle. What next Aunt Luna?" Sunset asked with a smirk. "Oh well. I going to see if I can get to know Twilight Sparkle better." "Good idea Sunset. But I do want to talk to you and Twilight later." Luna informed Sunset. "Okay. We'll see you at the end of the day." Sunset said taking leave of her Aunt.
