> The Dawning of Night > by ericson03 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > 1. An entrance to remember > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Moving through the streets I take note of how much had changed, as the ravages of time had given way to new buildings and newer still folk. Having lived for many years in this strange world, I had gotten used to the passing of life and time alike but seeing the white city of canterhorn in this new light still gave me pause. Eventually the storefronts and laughing ponies gave way, and beneath my hooves the cobblestone became more even and uniform. Now, instead of laughing ponies passing by with pastries and drinks in their hooves, with foals at their side, I was met with empty streets with scant few ponies among the streetlights.  It shouldn't be surprising however, that these lavish homes should remain empty, as tonight was to be of great importance to the nobility. For tonight, the gala was at play. An annual gathering of those favored by the diarchy. Whether they gained this favor by merit of act or status however, is nearly always in favor of the latter. Yes, for it functioned not only as a way of uniting the nation behind festivities organized by the Crown itself, but also as a political and economic battleground for the powerful. Of course that paints a negative light on the whole thing, but for the crown it is crucial, for it is better to keep such schemes in the limelight rather than the shadows where they cannot see or predict them. Passing by the corner of a lofty mansion and onto the main road leading to the inner and outer gates of Canterlot, I was the shimmering gold of the solar guards. Standing proud and tall, the two earth ponies stuck out like towers of metal and muscle fused into a gaudy display of power. They lacked grace, practicality and skill, surely, but they made up for it in discipline. Trotting up to within 4 meters of the two of them, I stopped as they cracked their spears onto the ground, the sound of wood striking rock echoing onto the empty road.  "State your purpose and identity, by order of the crown." Spoke the one on the right, his eyes glaring through the veil of my enchanted hood. "Which?" I responded curtly. The quick reply made the left one raise an eyebrow, with the one right responding with a furrow of his eyebrows. "Which of what exactly?" "Of which crown am I to identify myself to?" I asked, of course already knowing the answer. "By order of the princess of the sun." The left one spoke, with a tinge of annoyance in his tone. "Hm. Well I'm afraid I must decline," Lighting my horn, the blue light of my magic glimmered against the bag resting against my flank. A cutie mark laid upon it. It was that of a sword with the blade pointing down, the cross-guard taking the shape of a silver crown, the pommel that of the moon, and as the sword went on, it morphed into the visage of an ebony violin halfway through.  As my magic moved through the air, it gripped the document contained within the bag and held it out in front of the guards. "however I think this ought to suffice for my permission to pass." Taking a second to gather themselves from what they deemed a rather strange act from the pony in front of them, the right guard eventually strode forth to appraise the scroll. His eyes moving through the lines, he eventually reached the end with a surprised expression as to the nature of their visitor. Turning to his comrade, he gave a short nod before stepping out of my way as I stuffed the document back to its rightful place. Nodding back, the left guard opened the gate with a creak, causing my ears to flutter as I cringed at what they registered as an ungodly loud noise. "Welcome to the gala, may your stay be joyous and your troubles forgotten." The right guard spoke before returning to his side of the gate once more. Giving them a short nod, I moved through the gate and entered the castle grounds itself, although it had the look of a Palace more than that of something actually meant to be defended against a siege.  "Ah well," I spoke to myself. "war has long since left these lands." Taking a long breath as I stared at the golden rooftops of the towers, the sight of them reminding me of who I am to meet at last. As the clear white of a moon unblemished by her visage finally shone down at the glimmering gold, I pulled my hood down with a smile. "Soon, my love, all will bow once more before your majesty." … Having moved through the main gardens of the castle, and receiving the passing stares of nobles and guards alike, I had finally made it to the door of the castle. As the red carpet made way to the line of about a dozen nobles awaiting their turn for greetings however, I found I had a bit of time to get ready. Lighting up my horn, the shimmering hood still hanging around my withers untied itself from my body and was held up in front of me. Activating the second enchantment, the see through side of the hood gave way to a mirror image of myself. Piercing my own eyes with my gaze I looked into slitted pupils on a backdrop of shining violet with a diamond whiteness outlining the pupil itself. I had always been happy being born with them, as they looked like exploding stars on a night sky. Moving my sight to the mess the hood had made of my mane however, I was a little less pleased. Grumbling to myself, I fixed the stray white hairs that had shot out and moved down the light blue ones that were hanging lower down. Moving my magic through the main, however, It quickly became untangled of any knots and soon, it was as good as new. Finally, I checked perhaps my most important feature, the all important chest fluff. Moving through my deep blue coat to the clear white of my chest and belly, I brought out any gathered dust and fluffed it up to perfection. Giving myself a once over, I noted my lithe frame, honed from years of travel and adventure. I had managed to save myself from the majority of scarring, but I still had more than enough to be recognised as someone who had seen their fair share of battles. The feature that set me apart from others however was my height, for although in the old world I had stood at a measly 165cm, or 5'5 for the barbarians, here, I towered over most folk, standing one and a half hooves taller than most guards.  Gathering the hood within the sack still hanging around my flank, I muttered a quiet prayer for good fortune, and took my place in line. The number of ponies had now sunk down to half the number I had seen before, and actually would've been more had the nobility not stuck around to try to mingle with the royal in front. Celestia. Standing a head taller than even I, I could see her well and clearly from my place in the line. Her face was the very definition of beauty and her gentle smile bore all the features of a ruler. She truly was the sister of the one to whom I love. I was brought out of mussing however as the ponies in front of me were finally bore notice of the individual behind them, a herd from the looks of it. The stallion stood in the middle, surrounded by his three mares, each one dressed to the nines in regalia befitting of the high class. Making eye contact with the stallion, he was quick to cower behind the mares. I had to suppress the urge to roll my eyes at the display. Sure, I could handle the fact that the pony males of this world were a tad more… feminine than their human counterparts, but the city stallions were almost comical in how they handled any sort of strife. Quickly the situation escalated however as what I presumed to be the lead mare stepped forth to confront me, glaring at me all the while. "What in Celestia’s name are you supposed to be?” She asked with an edge to her voice. I gave a breath chuckle at her ignorance before answering with a wry smile. "Why, I am but a wandering minstrel, ma'am." Clearly not satisfied with my answer however, she opened her mouth to speak before being interrupted by a motherly voice. "Now now, my little ponies, no need for that." Celestia’s voice rang out as the line had shortened to just me and the herd of nobles. Turning around the group stood in like deers in headlights in front of the alabaster alicorn, staring as if they’ve just been caught with their hooves in the cookie jar. This went on for but a few seconds however as the lead mare caught herself and cleared her throat before speaking. “Please excuse us, your majesty, we were just surprised was all.” She finished with a bow as the others woke up from their stupor and bowed as well. Scrutinizing them for but a moment, Celestia’s eyes moved between each of them before finally turning to the lead mare. Finally, with a tinge of a smile on her face as she watched them sweat from their xenophobic incident, she spoke up. "You may rise. However I must say, it isn't me you'd ought to apologize to, Mrs. Penny Pinch."  "Of course, your majesty." Pinch said as she rose before turning back to me, however as soon as her face was beyond the sight of the alicorn, her previously nervous smile morphed into a frown. "I hope you'll forgive me, sir, we have yet to meet one such as yourself yet. I hope that despite this incident, you'll let bygones be bygones, the night is still young after all." She spoke with a glare, yet her voice displayed no malice. Clever girl. "I wouldn't worry too much, lady Pinch. You'll find that insulting me would be quite a challenge. Besides it is as you say, the night is still young." I gave a sideways glance to Celestia at the final statement, the act not going unnoticed as she met my eyes. Giving a curt bow, she turned back to Celestia and the group settled in to the benign talk you'd expect between a royal and her subjects. Words were spoken, nothing was said. Eventually however, the group began saying their goodbyes as Celestia subtlety tried hurrying them along. Looking at them trotting through the front lobby, I was finally left alone with the alicorn. Silence filled the air as we looked upon another, waiting to see who'd blink first. It didn't take long however for her to make the first move. "It's been a long while, Nocturne."  She spoke with such a hushed tone, emotion weighing heavy on her. "So it has, Celestia. It seems like just yesterday I was hunted by your guards." She flinched slightly at my words but nonetheless answered in turn. "It had been many years since I had seen one of Luna's kin. I simply sought to protect you, Nocturne." She took a hesitant step forward, her eyes unsure. There was a pause. Then- "Please, Nocturne, I didn't mean-" She was stopped as I walked towards her, and in swift order, leaned my head against her neck. I felt her freeze up at the action, but reassuringly I spoke. "I know, Celestia. I forgive you." Between the warmth of my coat, and her steady heartbeat, I found a small moment of peace as she let out a breath I didn't know she was holding in. Holding my eyes closed, I did felt her relax as she leaned against me, and suddenly I felt myself enveloped in a pair of giant wings. "Thank you, Nocturne. Thank you." Her breath hitched a little as she repeated herself. We stood there a moment, leaning against one another, till finally her wings returned to her side and in that bittersweet moment we parted. "You’d ought not to be so hard on yourself, Celestia. It’s not everyday one finds one of the starborn in their halls, less so in those days.” “I suppose… so how do you fair these days, Nocturne? Last I heard of you, you were venturing down the Lambenter, to the south lunar sea.” “Ah… so I was.” I reminisced. “Alas, I was more fearful in those early years. In pursuit of me I saw the gleaming gold of your soldiers as a sign of sure death, not salvation. In answer to your query however, I am tonight better than the night before and shall endeavor to find ever greater happiness, come the dawning of your light.”  I ended my answer with a short and courteous bow to the giggling alicorn. “My, how well spoken of you. One would almost think you’ve taken language lessons from my dear sister.” Oh how I wish. “Traveling from court to court has earned me quite the aptitude for the linguistics of the higher classes. On the subject of your sister however-” I continued as her curious gaze lingered on me. “Will she be present during the festivities? I’d have thought that she’d be standing next to you, greeting the citizenry.” Her gaze grew distant as I finished my question, her smile fading away in the same vein. The moment lingered as even her breathing seemed to slow, silence set in between us. "Celestia? Are you oka-” “No.” She snapped as her eyes returned into focus, her breath coming back as she released a sharp exhale. “No…” She repeated as her mind seemed to calm. “My sister is still recovering from her-” She closed her eyes as she seemed to look for a word, then opened them again. “exile.” It seemed so odd, to see someone of such power and influence at odds with herself, she reminded me of myself during my formative years. Yet, within her was a power and benevolence I could never hope to match.  “Apologies for my outburst, Nocturne. I’ve been very stressed lately with the preparations of the gala at hoof. I didn't mean to frighten you.” She said with tired eyes, a small look of shame about her. Frightened?  I had to almost catch myself as in the moment of the alicorn’s outburst, my breath had escaped me, and my hooves tensed. Inhaling calmly, I tried masking my startled form as my muscles relaxed, though I doubt it did much to hide it. “It's of no consequence, Celestia. Heavy is the head who wears the crown, and yours have worn the weight of sun and moon for a millennium.” I gave her a kind smile, as a sign of reassurance. “Come, the hour draws late and you, young lady, need some food.” I jokingly said as I trotted past her, thwapping her side with my tail.  Guffawing at my brazen act, she trotted to my side as we passed the doors of the open gallery where the common peoples and lower gentry mingled in merriment. “If there’s anything I'm not, little Thestral, it's young.” She spoke as she contained her giggles. “Oh don't sell yourself short, your majesty, you look barely a day over four hundred!” I exclaimed as we climbed the bifurcated staircase of the central hall.  Smacking me with her giant wing, I was nearly knocked into the railing had I not caught myself with a balancing spell. Looking at the smug alicorn, she rolled her eyes as she continued up the stairs. “A real sweet talker, aren’t you, Nocturne?” She remarked. “The best in the land!” I replied with a spring in my step as I caught up with her. “So princess, since you’ve asked of my own standing, how have you fared since we last met? Since i've arrived in Equestria i’ve heard all sorts of rumors as to what you’ve been up to since i was last here.” Passing past a pair of guards at the top of the stairs, I couldn't help but notice their leveled gazes that moved to meet mine. I suppose they haven’t seen many thestrals within the castle walls. “Oh well-” She started, then nearly immediately trailed off as the question seemed to mollify her. “Celestia?” "Oh! Apologies, Nocturne. I’ve been quite well, better than usual in fact. Besides the stress of organizing the gala, I've been blessed by so many joyous events recently, your arrival among them. The return of my sister, the achievements of my student and my niece just yesterday returning from Griffonstone.” She smiled as she looked up at the many chandeliers above us, the reflection of their flames dancing off of their golden arms and columns. Suddenly however, as if struck by lightning, she perked up. “Oh, I can't wait to introduce her to Luna!” She squealed with joy as she did this cute little skip via giving a single flap of her wings to jump into the air, before gliding down again. The little stunt brought a laugh out of me, yet part of me grew concerned. Her erratic jump between emotions coupled with her bouts of silence and near outbursts left me wondering about the reports of recent aloofness being more truthful than I had previously thought. “A student, you say? Would this be the famous ‘Twilight Sparkle’ I’ve heard so much about recently?” I questioned curiously. “Indeed, she’s been my most prized pupil yet. She’s not only saved my sister but recently she and the rest of the elements have done much to help Equestria, even chasing off a fully grown fire drake on their own.” She replied with a proud smile on her face. “You must be very proud of them, I know I would be.” “That I am, Nocturne. For an ageless like me, it fills me with joy to see that even with short lifespans, my ponies can accomplish so much in so little time. You’d like them, Nocturne.” “Would I now? Are they single?” I asked cheekily. "Oh, they are.” She giggled. “But I doubt you’d have much of a chance with them.” She stated as she started looking me over.  “Fluttershy would be much too afraid of your stature and diet.” This gave my mind pause, am I truly that intimidating? I gave a smile and almost immediately the guard I passed to my right flinched at the sight. Huh… theory confirmed. “Applejack would think you’re too pompous.” “You wha- pompous? I am not pompous!” I replied in faux offense as she raised an eyebrow. “I'm simply well spoken.” I finished with a smug smile as I stopped and lifted my foreleg up in a regal pose. Rolling her eyes, she continued. “I'm sure you are, Nocturne, but Applejack is of the Apple clan. Do you wanna live out your days in an apple orchard?” “Ah, there's always a catch isn’t there? Unfortunately the farmer’s life is not for me, Celestia.” I replied as I scratched the back of my head, rather embarrassingly.  “Nor did i think it was, Nocturne. Continuing on, Pinkie Pie… no.” She said simply. “No?” I asked with a snort of laughter. “No.” She nodded with great wisdom. “Then we have Rarity.” The alicorn continued. “I would say that she would probably be your best chance, however she’s currently quite infatuated with my nephew.” “Ah,” I replied in remembrance. “would that be one prince Blueblood?” “You know of him? He’s not often known outside of Equestria.”  “I happened to pass his place of residence on the way here.”  Gaudy old thing, a mansion which stood twice as tall and twice as wide as any of the other noble palaces within the inner district. It stood as a practical symbol of wealth with its gold plated gates, with the big sign of “here stands the house of Blueblood” being the cherry on top. “Oh,” she looked as if she just caught the smell of sulfur as she no doubt remembered the sight even better than myself. “I’d have hoped he’d spend his money more carefully, but alas the nobility sank their hooves into him. He used to be the sweetest little colt, you know?” She said as she started to reminisce. “I remember when he’d sit against my barrel during day court, he was so white that the petitioners didn’t even see him.” The memory brought a smile to her face. “It is unfortunate how power corrupts if used carelessly. Perhaps he’ll change though, you never know what the future may hold.” I offered. She nodded, and soon came back to the previous subject.  “And then there is Twilight, my beloved student. Seeing how well spoken you are, i wouldn’t be surprised if you caught her eye.” Ah, finally a possible win. “Unfortunately-” or not. “she's just recently begun her friendship lessons, and although progressing wonderfully, I doubt she feels ready for a relationship.” “Oh, woe is me.” I said in faux pain. “Destined to remain alone till the end of my days.” “A tragic fate.” Celestia responded with a mournful nod. It took all of about five seconds before we both burst out laughing at our collective silliness. “Are you truly lacking in a partner, Nocturne?” The question quieted down my laugh as I remembered days past, and the days to come. “Yes… I am.” I replied quietly, then turned to look at her with a rye smile to hide my emotions. “Why? Is it surprising?” Her melodic laughter filled the hallway as a small blush appeared in her cheeks. “Well you are quite old, Nocturne.”  Mental ouch. “Oh, is that the kettle calling the pot black?”  Now that got a reaction as I caught a wing to the flank.  Physical ouch. “You really like those things don't you?” I asked as my flank stung. Giggling a little, she gave a simple “yes” as we continued along. “You know, Nocturne, for someone so well traveled amongst the ‘higher classes,’ you’re awfully brazen around me. You’ve even yet to call me princess since I’ve met you. Why is that?” I hummed for a moment, mulling over the question. “I suppose… pity, might be the right answer.” She froze. And I stopped at her side. “What do you mean?” She asked, her voice neutral. The many guards who lined the hall who were previously tense at my mere presence and implied familiarity with the sun princess were practically an order away from detaining me, or worse.  Looking up to meet her even gaze, I replied. “You are alone, Celestia, I see it in your eyes, they crave friendship. As I said before, heavy is the head who wears the crown, not for just the duty of which the rank curses its wearer with, but the loneliness. Tell me, Celestia, when was the last time you spent a day out of the castle with friends? Not entertaining dignitaries, nobles or bureaucrats, but friends.” She looked down on me, her gaze softening as she thought over her answer. Eventually however, she spoke up. "Four years and sixty two days.” You could’ve dropped a pin in that hall and it would’ve wrung loud as a church bell within the silence. Eyeing the door at the end of the hallway, I turned to gently nudge her side as her gaze once more began to glaze over. “Shall we?” I said, motioning towards the door. Smiling, she placed her wing across my back. “We shall.” > 2. In the hall of the night queen > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stridding forth with a poised step, we passed the doors of the many chambers lining the walls. It felt nice to be back to luxury, the countryside has its comforts sure, but the feeling of these royal purple carpets beneath my hooves, the dancing flames of candlelight above me and the velvet touch of feathers upon my back? Pure heaven.  Finally arriving by the end of the hall, I felt Celestia remove her wing. “Feeling ready, Nocturne?” She asked, looking down at me. “Of course, your majesty.” I said as I prepared myself for a more cordial speech upon our arrival within the gala’s main hall. Smiling, she nodded to the herald, of whom motioned to the duo of guards standing at each side of the massive door before us. The one to our right stood fast, as the one to our left opened the door just slightly ajar as the herald strode, almost soundlessly, through the passage. Through the gap I heard the voices, laughter and music of over a hundred of guests and servants within. As fast as it came though, it disappeared as the door was closed once more. Must be some sort of silencing rune, should’ve figured as such from the grand hall itself. “Nervous?” The voice of the alicorn whispered uncomfortably close to my ear, making it flick. “No.” I answered almost as a reflex, although if the doubtful look of Celestia was any suggestion, it didn't sound very convincing. “It’s just,” I continued with a sigh. “tonight is important to not just me but to a lot of others I care about.”  “What do you mean?” She asked with a curious expression on her face. In that moment the chime of runes rang out and the silence spell upon the doors gave way to the muffled sound of trumpets. After their brief whistle, the voice of the herald rang out as the guards started slowly opening the door. “Announcing her majesty, the princess Celestia Solaris, diarch of Equestria and keeper of the sun! As well as her guest, Nocturne Nox of the starborn!” “That, Celestia, is a surprise.” I replied with a wink. Rolling her eyes at my secrecy, she approached first as my senior to the cacophonous roar of hooves on the other side. Passing the threshold, the gleaming shine of thauma powered lights reflected off the gold of her regalia, illuminating her like a rising phoenix as she extended her wings. It was then I truly understood why these ponies worship her, for in that moment she was akin to a goddess.  My momentary awe was cut short however as the guard to my right cleared his throat, motioning to the doorway. Taking it as my signal, I strode forward and with renewed confidence, passed the threshold. Lights, akin to the sun itself met me. It took not a little willpower to keep my eyes open and fixed in front of me as my vision regained its focus. Then as quickly as it was lost, I regained my sight and what a sight it was! From ceiling to floor it was one of the grandest halls I had ever set hoof in, only matched in its grandeur by the great halls of the capital. The ceiling, standing 13 meters above us, was of the whitest marble with solid gold ingrained like rivers upon it, forming a map of Equestria itself with each town and city being symbolized via thaumic lights. The brightest one being Canterlot itself, whose thaumic light was set within mirrors of gold, making it seem like a sun that illuminated the gold which Equestria was woven of.  The walls were akin to the roof, laying flat whilst also being made of white marble and having a veritable treasure trove of gold used in its construction. For each wall was segmented with great pillars, engraved with the history of Equestria and Celestia herself. Within each segment were also two glass surfaces. Up above us laid great paned glass windows picturing great historical events of Equestria, from the banishment of discord to the founding itself. Below them, at pony height, were the exits leading out to the balcony, these being made of clear glass. The commonality of every window however was, once again, that instead of more common metals as their frame, it was yet more gold.  At each side the hall was cut into, from what I could tell, thirds as giant arches shaped like two alicorns on their hind legs with their horns crossed at each side. Hanging down from the right arch were yellow and blue drapes and from the left yellow and pink, all were ingrained with runes. Finally, at the very end of the room stood the stage, whereupon the band was in silence… Oh. Right. Finally out of my stupor I strode forward, observing the faces of the many ponies in front of me. It was a veritable plethora of folk, from bejeweled nobles and military officers in dress uniforms to politicians and foreign dignitaries. The ones who made eye contact with me wore expressions of bewilderment at best, and disgust at worst. Most however were focused on Celestia, who parted the crowd as if she was a reincarnation of Moses himself, striding forth to sit at the honors seat just left of the stage on a raised floor. Glancing back at me for a moment, she paused as I did not follow. Motioning to the rightmost arch, she suddenly blinked in realization and gave a small nod, which I returned as I snuck into the crowd. Finding my way around was actually the easiest part, as my height gave me quite the advantage, it was getting there that was the problem. Being tall isn’t all it's made out to be as, well, you stand out. I made it just about a third of the way to the arch before the whispers began. “Who is that?” “Is that a starborn?” “Who let him in?” “I think he's a special guest of the crown, I saw him enter soon after the princess.” “What a garish ensemble, who only brings not but a bag to the Gala?” “He looks more like a servant than a guest.” Ignoring their remarks, I continued on. Moving with the swiftness and agility of flowing water, I soon made it to the rightmost archway. Crossing the threshold between one of the openings, the beginning of Celestia’s speech was cut short, as if a flame snuffed out by a strong breeze. Hm, so that was what those runes were for. Perhaps I ought to visit the royal library before returning home.  Breathing a sigh of relief at my no longer overburdened ears, I observed my surroundings.  This hall, although slightly smaller, had much in common with its larger counterpart. The only notable difference was that instead of glimmering gold and undyed of lights of the larger hall, this hall was laden in silver, and its lights a faded blue color. This left a hall more synergized with the moon, which stood shining in from one of the centermost windows, leaving a more natural feeling than the artificial lights of the first hall.  There were so many ways to describe it but via words or song, one thing above all held true. It was… *Beautiful.* It did not wear the bloated grandeur or glory of the first hall. The pillars were untouched, no history was written upon them. Even the great stained windows stood bare, with the exception of two. The one above me, and the one next to it. The first relative to the entrance displayed a sorrowful sight. Two alicorns. One was of the darkest ebon with a mane of stars, laying defeated admits the rubble of a castle and enshrouded within a ball of twisting light. Then a white one with a mane of rainbows, standing with her head bowed as tears ran down her face. Surrounding the white one were 6 gems, each connected via a string of light which shot out at the field surrounding the black alicorn. Above both of them, the visage of the moon stood like a ghost, displaying the dark form of the mare in the moon. Down from it, a string was falling, and at its very end, was the fallen alicorn. “The fall…” I muttered to myself. It was the first time I had seen it depicted beyond the crypts of the untarnished. There, carved in stone, it felt so cold yet… familiar. Every detail of her face encapsulated, it was as if she rested there along with them, her skin like theirs, turned to stone. Waiting to return.  As if on auto-pilot, my thoughts moved my hooves and shortly thereafter my gaze was fixed upon the second window. There once again were the two alicorns, the white one was back but in the place of the black one, a smaller blue one now stood. The two, once again in the rubble of a ruin, now stood beneath a moon unmarred by the fall, its clean silver visage shining bright upon them. Instead of a scene of sorrow however, this was one of joy. The two alicorns stood in an embrace, each of them with tears falling from their faces. Surrounding them, 6 mares stood, each in the color of their corresponding gem, each bowing in reverence.  I don't know when the tears started running down my face, but by the time I pulled myself out of my stupor, their drops had dripped on the floor and a forlorn look was upon my face.  The fall cannot be erased, but surely the rise will be to greater heights? Surely…  Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes. Slowly, my mind pulled itself together as I listened to my heart, thumping a slow steady beat.  Opening my eyes once more, I surveyed the hall. Upon the stage stood a small cadre of musicians playing a calm melody, each had a string instrument, a nocturne. How quaint.  Yet, as my eyes scanned the rest of the hall, I noticed only a small number of folk. Where the golden hall had close to just over a hundred guests, this hall scratched barely a third of that number. Most of them seemed to mill around the arches, probably too sensitive to be out on the balcony but still needing respite from the cacophony of the other halls. One of their number however, stood out. A lone average sized stallion of peacock blue coat and soot black mane, sitting alone at a roundtable, illuminated directly by the moon's light.  Well, at least I didn't need to waste time finding him. Then again, subtlety wasn’t his strong suit. Taking a step into the shadows, my breath grew shallow, heartbeat slower and with a blink, I was shadow. Viewing the world through the greyscale of the veil, my movement was unhindered by hoof or wind as I slid past the surrounding folk. Twisting and turning, I came upon my target. Then, stepping slowly out of the shadow cast by his form, I waited.  … As he lifted up ruffled his wings in shudder, I struck. “Hey- WHA!” He half yelled in surprise, his wings stretching out with a *pomf* as his hooves fell out beneath him and his back met the pillow. “Getting a little old to be taken by surprise at this point, ay, Chase?” I said with a smirk, as I stood directly over him, our bodies nearly pressing against one another. Looking up at me with indignation, he answered. “You know how much I hate land! If this was on deck, I would've put you in the ground within a second flat!” “Well, lucky that i caught such a tasty morsel on solid ground, hm?” I asked with a grin, then before he could react, leant down and gave him a quick little lick and bite to his neck. The little tease certainly had an effect on the stallion as a blush reddened his face. Despite his many years of combat, he showed none of the fatigue of a veteran. He had a sort of rugged handsomeness to him. It was accentuated by the black crescent branding of a moon upon his left temple, ending just shy of his eye. Oh how cute, he still kept one of his bangs braided and bleached white. Running down it, small stars of mithril were woven into it, making it shimmer in the moonlight. Frowning at my teasing, he harrumphed and tried to keep his cool. “I see you’re as much of a tease as ever.” He said in a hushed tone as I stepped off of him, letting him stand up. “Some things don't change with time, my friend.”  Glancing towards my periphery, I noticed the glares of many a mare. Each of them spoke in whispers yet I heard them nonetheless, none were too kind. Alas, it is no surprise that people like them wouldn’t take kindly to the closeness between two stallions, but what do they know of such things? Have they ever risked their lives for another? Trusted someone with their very life? Faced certain death and eluded it only via the intervention of the colt next to you? If they had, they wouldn't be so quick to judge. Returning my attention to the Storm Chaser I smiled as he returned to sitting on his cushion, I too taking a seat on a cushion next to him. “Hah! For how much you preach about changing ourselves for the better, you seem mighty reluctant to follow along.”  “Well,” I replied as i magicked away a glass of champagne from a bypassing waiter. “I like to think my teasing is part of my charm.” Taking a sip I continued with a cheeky smile on my face. “Besides, don't act like you don't enjoy it.” Rolling his eyes, he sank his muzzle into his own glass as I nudged myself and the cushion along to sit right at his side. My side pressed against his wing, forcing him to lift it up and before he had a chance to flee I pushed myself further against him, letting his wing drop down on my back. “Mmm…” I purred as I settled into my seat, my voice vibrating through the body of my smaller companion. “Now this is a throne fit for a lord.” Shuffling next me, Chase finally gave up and just went along with it, resting his body against mine. Thus we sat there in silence, just enjoying one another’s presence. “It's been a long time, you know.” He began. “Since we’ve had a moment to ourselves like this.” I let out a sigh at the truth. “I know, Chase.” I replied, nuzzling his mane. “I’ve tried juggling duty and friendship but… I am not meant to rule alone. Although i dont show it, these years have been tiring.” Looking up at me, his amethyst colored eyes sparkled in the moonlight. “But know this, my friend. By the end of this night, that all will change, I promise.” I said with a soft voice, yet firm certainty, as I leant down and gave his forehead a chaste kiss.  Smiling back at me with affection, the enchantment I had placed upon him seemed to wane. The spectral flash of his fangs glimmering for a moment before reverting to his pegasi disguise. “I’ll hold you to that.”  “I’m sure you will.” Smacking my rear with his tail, he snorted. “You’re damn right I will! Don't want a repeat of the Everbright, now do we?”  I groaned at the memory, almost reflexively applying the champagne to my lips. That had been the night I first discovered this body's tolerance for alcohol, and what it brought out in me. “Ugh! For the love of night, don't remind me!”  That only seemed to exasperate the problem however as the smug stallion continued. “Oh, and why ever not? It was quite a sight seeing Eventide of all folk being treated as prey, how many bites did you leave on him again?” Putting my head on the table, I clamped my hooves against my ears and mumbled. “Sorry, could you repeat that?” “14!” Laughing at my pain, he patted my back with his wing as I grumbled. “There there, Noxie, if memory serves right, he enjoyed it quite a bit. Though he did have a hard time walking the morning after as you.. Oh what was the term he used?” "Don't." I moaned. “Oh right, ‘bucked me through the be-’” Righting up myself, I was upon the giggling stallion within the blink of an eye as I began laying into him with my magic. The wisps of my aura ran through his coat as he began kicking to kick against me, trying to dislodge me to no avail. “Suffer my wrath, fiend!” I exclaimed triumphantly. “Nox- Nocturne please i- Oh god! Stop! I'm sorry!" He managed to get out between his giggling. Letting out a drawn out humm as I looked at the writhing stallion beneath me, I acquiesced.  “Very well, but you’re getting the little spoon treatment.” “Nooo…” “So more tickles?” Silence. “That’s what I thought, now get up and get to work, pillow.” Sighing, he pulled himself up and sat at the center of his cushion. Placing my own behind his, I sat down, letting my frame envelope him and rested my head upon his. Closing my eyes on top of my fuzzy little perch, I hummed to the tune of the roads go ever on. “I see you’ve put some weight on.” I heard beneath me. “Oh hush you, I'm all muscle.” I replied in faux offense. “Pfft, As if! You’ve gotten fat from all the paperwork.”  “You’re just jealous because I'm warmer than you.” “What? I am not jealous!” “Ah ha, so you admit i'm warmer than you?” Hearing him sputter beneath me, I shuffled a bit as I wrapped my hooves around him, pulling him close. I felt his muscle tense at the motion, no doubt not used to the act after so long apart. Yet a seconds passed, our breathing synchronized, our heartbeats slowed and soon enough he relaxed. “So,” I broke the silence with a hushed tone. “any news from the others?” “Not a word.” He replied matter of factly, yet kept his voice equal to mine in volume. “Well, I suppose that's a good sign if nothing else.” Humming in agreement, he tapped my right forehoof. “Could I have my drink?”  Staring down at the glass of rum the stallion had procured, i lifted it up in my aura and brought it over to him. “Thank you.” I heard beneath me. “You’re welcome.” …  Sitting in silence as we nursed our drinks, we waited. > 3. Old and new encounters. > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Thou art a trueborn heir.” It’s… fuzzy. “I love you, remember that.” Where am I? “A crown of stars resteth upon thine head.” All was dark above the water's surface, but beneath, lights danced. “Ready or not, brother, providence waits for no one.” They moved around me like fish, almost seeming alive in their fluid motions. “Thy kind are but reavers to the kingdom of heaven, and I shall cut thee down." Each held a memory of friends and foes alike. Then, a laugh rang out. … A shift beneath the water. The lights faded. Then, there was a pause. A second passes. A burst of noise echoed through the space, and a claw drags me under as I scream. … We were there again, in the deep, dark, cold unlit by neither stars or sun. I struck a blow, it fell on empty air. Dodging and weaving, father cut me. I was cut, and as that wound was still half healed, I was cut once more. Back and forth we went, our blades clashing with an echoing clanging of mithril, the silvery sparks of metal being the only light in this place. Then, an opening. Pushing myself forward, his blade pushed into my shoulder as I held in my scream. His blow however came at a cost, as my own blade cleaved his head from his shoulders, dispersing what was left of his tainted body. I huffed, coughing and crying as I pulled the blade out of myself. Then from the shadows of the far wall of the chamber, the laugher rang out once more. “Bravo. Truly a show for the ages.” Looking up at his place upon the throne, I could only give a shallow breath as he grinned down at me. “But I'm afraid everypony must one day exit the stage, and yours will be a tragic farewell.” Suddenly out from the walls dozens more smaller shadows appeared, each bearing gnashing teeth and a howling laughters akin to hyenas. “Now bow out.” Rushing towards me, the creatures were about to rip into me as I lifted my sword one last time. Then, a roar filled the air. And fire filled the air. … I could not feel, I could not see and I could not hear. “Wakey, wakey.” A feminine voice whispered into my ear. A hoof prodded my side as my eyes opened to the world around me. Almost immediately, I was met with another pair of eyes staring right back at me, amethyst in color. "... Hello?" I ask hesitantly, not moving an inch. Pulling back, the mare giggled. "Hello to you too." Standing before me was a mare only a tiny bit shorter than myself, cladden in a dress of the most unique making. Matching her coat, it was a dark pink but accentuating it was thousands of light blue crystals woven into it. Upon her crown braid lay a golden tiara with an amethyst in the middle. It was princess Mi Amore Cadenza, the alicorn of love, and standing next to her… “You two alright?” Asked the unicorn stallion, his red uniform standing out against his white coat. “What?” A movement beneath me alerted me to my friend’s plight and as I lessened the weight upon him, he let out a relieved sigh. “You alright down there, Chase?” I asked worryingly. “Yeah, just give me a breather, how long were we out?” Turning my attention to one of the clocks lining the spaces between the windows, I squinted to see what it read. “Mmm… just about 15 minutes.” “Ah, well we didn’t miss too much then.” “Well- you say that.” Shuffling off of my heated pillow, I allowed him to see who we were in the company of. Sitting down next to him, he gave me a short glance before focusing on the snickering pair in front of us. “Allow me to introduce princess Mi Amore Cadenza, niece of princess Celestia, and her escort… I’m sorry, but I am unfamiliar.” Prompting him to give his name. “Oh, that's alright. My name is Shining Armor, captain of the solar guard.” Oh. Well this ought to be interesting. “Ah, the brother of the element of magic, your reputation precedes you, sir. Youngest captain in history of the guard, if I'm correct?” That certainly brought some pride to the stallion as he puffed his chest out at the remark. How cute. Glancing back to Chase, I found him sinking back into my side as he gazed expecting between me and the couple. Yeah okay, real subtle there, Chase. “As for myself, I am Nocturne Nox of the starborn.” Giving a curt bow before the pair, I gave them both my most charming smile, showing off my canines. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Nox." That’s a new one. “Shiny and I were just looking for a break from the crystal hall. It was quite a surprise seeing a pair of thestrals sleeping in the middle of the Lunar hall. Speaking of-” Her smile then turned predatory as she shifted her eyes from me to Chase. “-who’s your coltfriend over there?” Feeling Chase’s fur stand on end at the sudden attention from a princess, I chuckled as he stood straight with a blush on his face. “N-not colfriend, your majesty, just a friend-” “A very close friend~” I interjected as i used my magic to form a blanket like surface that draped across his back. “BUT just a friend nonetheless.” He reiterated as he tensed from the contact, his blush getting even redder in color. … Did- did I break him? “O-oh, and my name is Storm Chaser.” There we go. Letting out another laugh over the misfortune of my friend, the pair sat down at the other end of the table. “A pleasure to meet you Mr. Chaser, you two may call me Cadance by the way. My full name is a bit of a hassle to spew out everytime.” “And you can call me Shining, my rank is left at the door for anyone but the nobles and the boys in gold.” Smiling at their good natured response to our introduction, I swiped a couple of drinks from a passing waiter and placed them out in front of each of us. “Very well then, Cadence, Shining.” I said, turning my gaze between them. “You may call me Nox. No mister, if you would, I feel old enough as is.” I gave a good natured laugh before taking a sip of the clear substance before us. Mmm, gin and tonic. “And if you would, just call me Chaser. Mr. Chaser was my father.” Chase piped up, having gotten his nerves under control as he had already begun tucking into his drink. “So Chaser, would you mind if I asked what's making your braid sparkle?” Cadence asked, eyeing Chase’s hair curiously. Still sipping his drink, Chase adorably flicks his eyes between her and his braid before setting his drink down. "It's mithril,” he started, running his hoof down his braid, “created by imbuing steel with pure starlight within the well of the Skyforge. it was a gift to me from-” “Me.” I butted in with a smile and nuzzled the top of his head. “-yes, you.” He continued, rolling his eyes at my antics before turning back to the couple. “He wove them into my hair as he braided it. Each bit of mithril is shaped like a star and imbued with an enchantment to make it shine…” He trailed off as he looked at me with a soft giggle. “Do you remember what you told me?” “‘Even if you should get lost, in the darkest storm or in the roughest sea, with these i'll always find you, my little light.’” I recited, never skipping a beat. He gave a soft hum as he leant into me, nuzzling into my side. “One of your better moments.” A small moment of silence fell over us as we enjoyed the moment, eventually though, it broke as we looked over to the other pair at the table. … Said pair had just about the widest difference of expression on their faces. Cadence wore a wide smile as her wings were ruffling, almost vibrating with energy as she clapped her hooves in excitement… is she- “That’s lovely!” She exclaimed before leaning in “Are you sure you two aren't an item?” “Very sure.” We answered in unison, clinking our glasses before taking a sip… Oh no… Wrong glass! Setting my drink down after taking a sip, Chase looked up to me in confusion as I tapped his side. “Wha-” And then he received his drink down his throat as I moved with lightning speed, his lips quivering as his face blew up in a blush. Before he could retaliate however, i pulled back. “Hak- Wha- What the fuck, Nox?!” “We switched glasses-” “So you decided to tongue my throat?!” “...Dont act like you didnt like i-.” “This is why you’re single.” … “Are you suuure you’re not together?” “Very sure.” We reiterated. "Wuh!" Ah look Shining’s awake. Contrary to his girlfriend, Shining had his mouth open during our entire exchange. His eyes having been locked onto Chase’s braid until just now. Rubbing his eyes free of the built up moisture, the young stallion then looked between us. “You have Mithril?!” Shining shouted, turning some heads. “Yes?” Chase replied with a raised eyebrow. “H-how- no forge has been able to replicate it! No one's sighted new sources for 800 years!” At that point Cadence intervened and placed a wing over her partner, stroking his back. “Dear, why don't we lower our tone a little, hm?” “But-” “No buts Shiny, you're making them uncomfortable.” Turning his sight to us, he noticed our weary looks at his sudden outburst. Obviously feeling a bit guilty, the white stallion gave a shallow bow of his head. “Sorry, I lost my cool there for a second.” Nodding, I answered. “Don't worry, you're not the first to be so caught off guard. In truth, we hadn't had the capability to forge mithril for many centuries ever since the fall. It was only recently that the process was rediscovered and even then, it's a costly process.” Pondering over this information, Shining mulled for a moment before sharpening his gaze. “How much has been produced so far?” “I don't know.” I somewhat lied, after all I haven't been home in a while. “Even just an estimate would do.” He insisted. “I'm afraid I'm not at liberty to say, Shining. As a stallion of the gold, surely you must understand.” He harrumphed at this, dear God is he pouting? Adorable. “I suppose it would be too easy.” Chuckling at his complaining, I motioned to Cadence to comfort the poor boy as I noticed all of us had finished our round of drinks. Waving a hoof to a passing servant I requested a round of white stalliongrads. Nodding, the servant zipped away. “There there, Shiny. At least you have a lead now.” Cadance comforted. “Yeah but- eugh. I got my hopes up.” He replied as his ears twitched. Giggling at his childishness, Cadance nuzzled his cheek. “I swear, you're just as much of a colt as you were back in the day sometimes.” “Nu uh! I'm grown up now!” Shining replied with mock childishness as he started to regain his smile. “Yeah you are.” Cadance responded, with a certain sultry tone in her voice as she nipped at his ear. I could only imagine the amount of love and trust there must be between the two of them to do things like this, especially for a princess and the captain of the guard. Then again… Glancing down to Chase, I saw his warm smile as he looked at the couple. Leaning against me, he rested his head against me. I know exactly how that trust feels. Interrupting my thoughts, the servant returned with a tray full of drinks. Putting them down on the table, he then used his horn to move them to each of us. With a thank you from each of us, he then quickly departed again. “Alright then,” Cadence began after having taken a short sip. “so what brings the two of you to the gala? I can't say we’ve ever had the pleasure of hosting thestrals before, much less starborn.” “First time seeing one as well, my sister will throw a fit when she finds you.” Shining said before he took a sip, giving a soft hum as the liquid went down. “Ah, now that is the question isn’t it?” I asked rhetorically as I eyed one of the guards looking at me from my periphery. “I can't imagine you’re the only ones wondering that.” Following my gaze, Shining then rolled his eyes as he spotted the guard in question. “That one? He’s one of lieutenant Stalwart’s subordinates. I wouldn't worry about them, they're just overly cautious.” He laughed as he continued. “Perhaps because I'm not in command to keep things under wraps.” I gave a hum as I looked out at the night sky behind the couple, sipping my drink as a gust of cool wind blew through. Curiously however, I was also met with the sight of a certain group of mares on the balcony outside, all together forming a rainbow of colors. Sitting with their backs turned to us, I thought of a genius idea. “Well, right now we’re just waiting for some friends of ours, however-” I looked toward the musicians behind us, playing the same boring melody over and over. “-instead of telling you what our purpose is here, how about you show you?” “Well that’s cryptic, but go on.” Cadence replied Chase in the meanwhile had just been nursing his drink, totally unsuspecting as to my tail that suddenly wrapped around his own as I turned and pulled him against my chest. “Gwak!” He yelped as his drink was nearly knocked out of his hoof. “The fuck, No-” His word was cut short as my hoof grazed his lips, his anger turning to an annoyed flustered look. “Shhh… Chase.” I whispered into his fluffy little ears, giving them a little nip as our accompanying couple failed to stop their giggling at the public display of affection. “Wh-what?” Chase replied as he turned to putty in my hooves. “Do you hear that?” “H-hear what?” Giving him a long and slow nuzzle, I grasped his side with the magic blanket i had draped across his back, almost pulling him off the ground. “That's the sound of a duet.” … “Nox, no.” He said. “Nox, yes!” I replied. “No plea-” Standing up with my friend held onto my side like a sack of potatoes, he writhed as I trotted along to the laughter of Shining and Cadence. “Come my friend! Let us engage in leisure!” “Gwak!”
