> A Glimmering Mare's Day At Dawn > by SamSwordsman123 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Mare's Day > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Luster Dawn awoke in her room in the Castle of Friendship. She stretched her hooves (and wings). It still felt strange even after several months of being an alicorn. She’d managed to get used to her wings at least thanks to the practice with her griffon friend Georgia as well as Rainbow Dash. She looked out her window and saw it was still dark but dawn would come soon. This would be a good opportunity for her to do what she wanted for her mother, Starlight Glimmer. Because today was a special day for her mother, and all other mothers across Equestria. It was Mother’s Day, also known as Mare’s Day, and today Luster was determined to make her day with her mother a good one. She activated her horn which glowed with golden magic. She opened a drawer to her desk and drew out a piece of paper. It showed her plans for today, she’d drafted it several times, wanting to make it as perfect as possible. She’d listed things her mother liked to do such as fly kites, study magic, and just hang out with friends and family. “Let’s see, so first things first,” Luster said as she looked at her list. “Make Mom breakfast in bed.” She crept out into the hallways of the castle, being careful to move quietly so she didn’t wake up her mother… or father for that matter. She passed their room as well as that of her godmare Trixie. Hearing her father Sunburst snore from inside his and Starlight’s room, Luster could only assume they were all asleep. She made her way to the kitchen and got to work, putting a flour mixture together and adding eggs, milk and oil to make pancakes, which were her mother’s favorite breakfast food. She also prepared a plate of fruit as well to put on the pancakes when the time came. Luster turned on the stove, put a pan on top of the burner, then took a ladleful of batter and put it on to cook. Minutes went by, she flipped the pancake and was soon rewarded with a golden-brown surface on both sides. She cast a warming spell on the first pancake to make sure it stayed warm until the time came for her to deliver it to her mother. She looked out the window and saw the sun rising over the mountains to Canterlot where her mentor Princess Twilight was. Luster hoped her mentor was holding up okay. Twilight had lost her own mother a while ago in the war with Grogar. In fact, she’d lost nearly her entire family to that monster. Luster would have to write to her later and make sure she was alright. She made a few more pancakes and then decorated them with strawberries and blueberries. Starlight and Princess Twilight had given her the occasional cooking lessons so she could make a decently artistic pancake topping. She covered the pancakes with butter and put the red strawberries in the shape of a heart and used a knife to cut the word Mom into the top pancake of her mother’s plate. As for her father, she’d made his with blueberries just like he liked. To top it off she poured two glasses of orange juice. Her work completed; Luster made her way down to her parent’s room. Just in time too since Sunburst was sitting up and preparing to get out of bed. Starlight still lay down, but her eyes were open. “Morning!” Luster called as she entered the room carrying the tray with the food to her parent’s bed. “Luster!” Sunburst exclaimed. Starlight sat up beside him, her eyes widened as she saw her daughter enter their room holding plates with pancakes. “Happy Mare’s Day!” Luster said with a smile as she approached the bed. She set the tray down at the foot. Starlight saw the heart made of strawberries and the word Mom cut into the center and put a hoof over her own heart. “Oh! Luster that’s so sweet!” Starlight said with a smile for a moment, but it quickly vanished. “But… I’d hoped we could all eat together as a family!” Luster’s smile vanished as well upon hearing that. “Oh, I was just hoping to do something nice for you myself and breakfast in bed was the first thing I thought of. I wanted to surprise you!” Starlight sighed. “Well, guess I should have discussed it with you. I am grateful to you though. Alright no biggie! This looks delicious, thank you!” “Yes, it looks great!” Sunburst agreed as he levitated his own set of pancakes up and took a bite. Luster nuzzled her mother and was about to make her way back to the kitchen to make her own breakfast when the room across from Starlight and Sunburst’s opened. Trixie Lulamoon appeared and yawned as she walked out. “Are you ponies up already?” she asked sleepily. “It’s not even- She suddenly saw the tray of food Starlight and Sunburst had on their bed. “Breakfast in bed? I want breakfast in bed!” Trixie proclaimed. “Maybe you would have gotten it if you’d had a daughter of your own!” Starlight teased. “It's Mare’s Day you know!” Trixie sighed. “Very well, the Great and Powerful Trixie can make her own breakfast.” “Come on Aunt Trixie, we can eat together,” Luster said. She and her aunt/godmare headed to the kitchen and made their own breakfast. Starlight and Sunburst sat with them at the table as they ate. “Ah, that hit the spot,” Luster said as she patted her full tummy. “I’ll say! But you owe me Luster!” Trixie said in her usual boasting manner. “As if!” Luster smirked and patted her godmare on the shoulder playfully. “Maybe some other time.” The family shared a giggle. Then Luster turned to her mother. “So, Mom, I was thinking we could all go out and fly kites for a while, I know you like that,” Luster said. “Then maybe a couple little teleportation trips around Equestria?” “That sounds wonderful!” Starlight proclaimed. They began cleaning up their dishes when there was a distant knock on the door. Luster grinned. “That’s for me!” she said. “Give me a second!” Luster teleported there. She’d been expecting someone to come. Opening the front door, she saw her coltfriend, the earth pony Gallop J. Fry with a small cart attached to himself. Usually, he ran deliveries for Hayburgers around Ponyville, but she’d asked him to bring her a set of flowers as a special favor today. “Here’s your flowers Luster,” Gallop said. Luster took the vase holding the purple, red, and blue flowers in her magic and smiled. “Thank you, Gallop.” She gave him a kiss on the cheek. He blushed and gave a grin in response before saying, “I better get back home to my own mom.” Luster nodded. “See you later with the others then?” “Yeah, then we can go on a date by ourselves,” he said. She nodded and walked back to the kitchen. Starlight smiled as she saw the flowers. “Oh, those are beautiful, Luster!” Starlight said. “Thank you!” “No problem, Mom!” Luster said. “Anything for the best unicorn mother in all of Equestria!” “Aww!” Starlight said with a grin. They got out their kites and flied them around for a while in the sky. Then they teleported to Manehattan and Canterlot, walking the streets of the cities for a while. They had lunch and saw great sights. Toward the end of the day, they teleported back in time for dinner where Luster had one final gift. A song. She’d worked on it with her Kirin friend River Song who’d had a lovely singing voice. Her friends were all there too as she wanted to include them in her song even though today was mainly about mothers. I lived in a castle with two wonderful parents And a great and powerful Aunt. My mother was always there for me She’s the greatest magical unicorn today And my father is a genius as well. I wanted to make them proud So, I went off to study. I used to be annoyed at friendship Living in a castle with a school next door Dedicated to it. It just came up so much I got annoyed. But when I made friends I realized They made me feel whole. I have the best mother, father, family and friends. A pony could ever hope for. I look forward to starting each new day with you. At Dawn. Clapping sounded from her friends and family. “Perfect day,” Starlight said. “Your song was lovely. Did River help you make it?” “Yeah,” Luster said. “I hope this was a great Mare’s Day?” “Best one I can remember,” Starlight said. Luster’s friends and their visiting mothers all joined them for dinner and then Luster headed to her room. She let out a happy sigh. It had been a good Mare’s Day for Starlight, and that was what she had hoped for. She just had one final thing to do. Walking over to her desk, Luster wrote a letter to her mentor. Dear Princess Twilight I hope you are doing well on Mare’s Day. I know that recent times have seen you lost many ponies you care about. I want you to know though, that I consider you a mother figure in my own life as well. You’ve taught me so much over the years since I joined the School of Magic, and in the past several months since I finally opened myself up to friendship. Love, Your Faithful Student, Luster Dawn … In Canterlot, Twilight had returned from visiting the grave of her mother Twilight Velvet, as well as the rest of her family with the exception of Spike. She’d also visited Celestia’s grave as well. Both her mother and mother figure were gone. She felt sad about that and shed a few tears while visiting the graves, but now she was ready to face the rest of her day with a regal smile. Her private chambers allowed her to receive letters from special magic vents through which the mail materialized just like they had in Celestia’s days. Luster’s letter soon appeared and Twilight opened it with a smile, letting out a small “Aww!” before writing her reply.
