Spike has an item in his pocket, an item for Rarity, and a question to ask. Courage is the one thing he's lacking, every time he's around her he finds himself unable to ask the one question that's been on his mind for a while now. He's older now and he knows it's time.

AUTHORS NOTE: I did the drawing, this took me a few weeks. For each part of it, I did 8 live drawings videos. Showing how this drawing came to be. This drawing was started on 4/23/22 and I finished it on 5/4/22, the drawing and story evolved over time into what I have now.

Fire Heart Ring

Spike had the box in his pocket, he’d kept the dust from touching it for years. He’d grown up with longing in his heart and she was always on his mind. A rare beauty had captured his heart from the first time he’d met her. It was who she was on the inside that he’d felt an unmatchable attraction to. It was her eyes he’d first caught sight of before he got to know her over the years. They were always together that was something no one could deny, it became as normal as breathing the air or seeing a sunrise. “I bet I won’t even be able to ask her.” Spike thought as he ran his hand through his dark green spikey hair. It was a comical play on his name. This isn’t the first time I’ve had the item with me and hadn’t been able to ask her. He let out a long sigh. Just be yourself. His inner voice suggested. You know she loves you, that’s apparent, her actions say it even though she hasn’t told you yet. He felt the outside of his pants pocket. Is that wasn’t holding me back, the need to hear her say it? Spike gritted his teeth and knocked on the front door of Carousel Boutique. He kicked at the dirt with his shoe while he waited. Luna’s moon hung in the sky over Ponyville.

“Coming…”

Rarity’s heavenly voice was so unmistakable hers. He glanced up when he heard her turning the knob. The second he caught sight of her his heart skipped a beat like always. His light blue shirt made his pale purple skin and his dark green hair stand out.

“Spikey?” Rarity beamed a smile at him like she always did. So warm and inviting. “What brings you by at night darling?” Her gaze wandered over him and then she spotted the familiar outline on his pants pocket. Working with fabric for so many years Rarity knew it was a box of some sort, small in size. She grinned the first time she’d spotted him carrying it around and pictured what could be inside. The thought sent her heart soaring and sent a warm feeling rushing throughout her body. Stop daydreaming, it’s just a crush he has on you. He’s even told you. Rarity’s inner voice had echoed like it was doing now.

Spike noticed Rarity staring at him, she had a spaced outlook in her eyes. He could see the light blue-violet top she was wearing along with a black skirt that framed her hips. “Are you okay Rarity?”

Rarity blinked and took in a breath. “Oh, I’m sorry darling, I must have drifted off in thought. Would you like to come in?” She added the last part without skipping a beat and could feel her heart racing. I could just ask, but he always looks so adorable acting all shy and nervous, I find it so adorable. She thought as he walked past her, and she caught the scent of the cologne he had on. “Mmm…that’s lovely dear.”

“Huh?”

“Your cologne you have on.” Rarity said. “A divine aroma darling.” She lowered her lashes at him as well as the tone of her voice. “You smell so good.”

Spike could feel the redness rising in his cheeks, with just her voice and a few words she could cause this. “Teasing me again?” He asked with a grin even though he was fighting to keep his voice from going high pitch.

“I wouldn’t do that, darling, merely a friendly compliment.”

For as long as I’ve known you, I’ve never seen you flirt with anyone else like you do with me. Spike thought. “Do you say that to all the guys that come by and try on clothes?”

Rarity’s eyes widened at that question. “What exactly are you implying Spikey?”

“It’s merely a question Rarity,” Spike replied with a smile, he could feel the redness in his cheeks subsiding. “You like flirting with me, you can deny it, but I know the truth.” He glanced down seeing as he was a full head taller than her 5-foot 5 height, he was 6 foot tall.

Rarity swallowed a lump in her throat when his emerald gaze leveled on her. She found that her throat had gone dry. It was like the feeling of a rough fabric laying on her tongue.

“Hesitating on saying anything?”

“Of course, not darling, my mouth is just dry.”

Spike could see the blush on her face, and he picked up on the slight rise in the sound of her voice. “Allow me, my lady,” Spike said with his usual bow, walking off he glanced back and caught the grin on her face. Proceeding to the kitchen he came back a few minutes later with a glass in his hand. “Here you go, as requested.”

“Thank you Spikey-Wikey.” She said taking the glass from him she took a long refreshing drink. “So tell me, darling, what brings you by today?” I bet it has to do with condense of your pocket.

“I can’t just pop by to see an amazing woman?” He was glad that she hadn’t taken a drink at the time he said that. He watched her face redden just a bit more. “Do I need a specific reason to come by?”

Rarity took another drink of water before she responded. “Of course not darling.” Now who’s flirting? Not that I mind it. We’ve always done this; it feels so natural.

"Is it just me or did you start acting strange the second you saw me at the door?" Spike asked.

"Whatever do you mean darling?" Rarity asked and felt her hand clamping around the glass in her hand.

Spike noticed that her knuckles were turning white. "You might want to ease up on your grip, I don't want to see you break that glass and have shards embedded in your hand."

Rarity glanced down at her hand. Her sapphire gaze lifted back up to him.

Spike reached out and took the glass from her. "Did I say something wrong?"

Rarity let out a giggle. "I've only ever known you to say the right things." She paused and then added. "Ask the right questions. She emphasized a couple of those words.

Spike lifted an eyebrow at what Rarity had said. There was something in the way she said the last part that had him thinking. Could she already know… He paused in thought, reached down, and felt his pocket and the item that stuck out. His emerald gaze studied her, and he watched a smile start to curve on her lips. Why hasn’t she called me out on it? She’s waiting on me to make the decision. He realized.

“Problems darling, you look lost in thought.” Rarity said keeping that same smile. She could see the wheels in his head-turning, but she refrained from saying anything about it. It was he who wanted to ask her. She had a pretty good idea of what his question was going to be. It always got her heart racing a bit faster.

“Rarity?”

She blinked and realized she’d be lost in her thoughts just like he’d been. “Um…sorry dear, were you going to ask me-” She abruptly cut herself off. Nice going. Her inner voice echoed.

Spike ran his hand along the back of his neck. His hand had come away from his pocket. “Would you like to go for a moonlit walk? It is a beautiful night, it’s almost a match for your beauty.”

Rarity giggled at that last part. “Flirting with me again, are we. I like the compliment.” She stood beside him and hooked her arm around his. “A walk sounds lovely darling.”

Spike smiled; she’d never said no to a walk with him. Some night air might clear my head and loosen my tongue. He thought and led her out into the warm night air. The two of them walked down the streets of Ponyville side by side.

Rarity glanced down when she felt his hand brush against hers, she smiled and slide her hand over his and interlaced her fingers with his. Her sapphire eyes met his with a smile.

Spike smiled back as the two continued to walk together. “This is a beautiful night,” Spike said taking in a deep breath of fresh night air.

“I agree darling.” Rarity replied and added. Her long dark lavender hair caught the wind, and it blew out around the side of her face. “Feels like the perfect night for something wonderful and amazing to happen. Don’t you think so Spikey?”

“Yeah…I do, Rare…um Rarity.” Spike said with a slight laugh.

Rarity lifted an eyebrow. “Was that a nickname?” She brought Spike to a stop. “I don’t mind it. I call you Spikey, Spikey-Wikey, or precious scales.”

Spike laughed at that. “That makes three for me and only one for you Rare.”

“Oh, I’m sure as the years roll by you’ll come up with many more.” Rarity said with a grin. Though she was looking at him she could see his free hand going into his pocket that contained the small box. Her heart skipped a beat at the thought, and she felt her head start to spin a bit.

“I’d lo…like the chance to find out,” Spike replied and felt his cheeks starting to redden at his little slip-up.

Rarity’s jaw dropped open a bit at what she thought she heard him almost say. He almost said it… Her heart squeezed in her chest and her head went into another spin cycle.

Spike noticed the look on her face. Yup she heard my near slip. What would she actually do if I ask or if I said it? A thought struck him as he gripped the box in his pocket. He took in a deep breath and pulled the box out. The moonlight caught the silver box in his hand causing it to sparkle. He brought the box up to Rarity’s eye level he let go of her hand.

“So is this what you’ve been caring around?”

“I figured you would have noticed. I wasn’t trying to hide this from you. I was just-”

“Waiting for the right time.” Rarity lowered her eyelashes and smiled. Her sapphire eyes were focused on the small box in his hand. She felt a tear slide down her cheek. Her heart was racing just from the excitement alone and a feeling of overwhelming joy."

"Rarity..."

"Yes?"

Spike could feel his hands starting to tremble. "I...um..."

"The box is lovely dear." She kept the smile even though her heart was going crazy.

'Will...you..." Spike was looking at the box in his hand.

"Darling?"

Spike lifted his gaze to hers. His heart skipped a beat from the look in Rarity’s eyes. “Yes?”

She smiled at him. “Aren’t I supposed to say that in response?”

Spike swallowed a lump in his throat. He could feel the heat rushing to his cheeks.

Rarity reached out and ran her fingers along his cheek. “Are you going to ask me, darling?”

Spike felt his body tingling from the feeling of her silky soft fingers. He felt one knee drop to the ground while he balanced on the other. His gaze stayed on hers and he could see the tears in her eyes. Taking in a deep breath he let the words come. “I’m not about to go another second, another minute, even another day without having you in my life. I can’t see my life without you. We’ve been so close for years. I want you…no, I would love for you to spend the rest of your life with me. If you’ll have me as your husband, and you as my wife.” He took in another deep breath and said. “Marry me, Rarity.”

Rarity had her hand on her chest as he delivered a very heart-felt proposal, she could tell it was coming straight from his heart that she knew had been hers for years now. She could hear her heartbeat in her ears. She felt her head spinning more and more as her vision began to blur. She started to stagger backward. "This is the worst possible thing."

Spike's jaw dropped open he could hear the popping sound. Worst? The word echoed in his mind. worst possible thing. His mind repeated, he felt his heart drop into his stomach. He reached out and grabbed her hand, then he noticed the spaced outlook in her eyes. His own eyes widened. She’s going to faint. He stood up and pulled her to him, he wrapped his arms around her and didn’t care if the box fell to the ground. She’s more important than a box or a ring. “Hey…you, okay?”

Rarity felt the spinning in her head stop as Spike held onto her. She noticed the crushing look on his face, and the concern coming from his voice.

"I’ve been feeling dizzy today darling.” She placed her hand on Spike’s cheek. “Spike I would never think of hurting someone I love with all my heart and soul."

Spike glanced down at her and his jaw hit the floor. “You…” He felt his throat go dry.

"Darling, I was frustrated that I started to faint on you. I was overwhelmed by joy and happiness." Glancing down she noticed that the box had opened up, the moonlight caught the glow of the jewel in the middle of the ring. “You dropped the box.” She said picking up the ring as Spike lowered her to the ground. The coolness of the grass tickled her legs. She held the ring in her hand and noticed a small fire heart ruby winking back to her from the moonlight above.

“I don’t care about the box, all I care about was you, and making sure you were okay.” He explained sitting beside her, he used his thumb and first finger to pick up the ring.

Rarity smiled and held out her left hand.

Spike noticed this and the look on her face. “Dose…this mean?”

“How in Equestria could ever think of saying no to someone so special to me, who truly cares about me and not just for my beauty.”

“Whom you love more than anyone.” He slid the ring on her ring finger.

Rarity nodded and put her left hand on his cheek.

Spike could feel the coolness of the ring on his cheek. “I love you, and I want to prove that every day from here on out.”

“As I do I, Spike. We’ll have years ahead of us, and many of our friends overfilled with joy at this wonderful and long-time-coming news.”
