When is truly a gift? One that is found or one that is given?

Rarity finds something special in the gem cave that has her questioning her feeling and coming to a conclusion. Gifts are more about giving, and they should come from the heart. When is truly a gift? One that is found or one that is given?

AUTHOR NOTE: Another romance story between these two. I have so much fun writing these 1000 word stories, I find them easier to do than longer ones. They come out so much faster and easier.

The Second Heart

“I don’t believe it.” Rarity said to herself, she had the glow of her horn to illuminate the gem cave she enjoyed frequenting often. Her unicorn magic still held her pickaxe in the air. Her sapphire eyes had widened when she found a sapphire gem. “It looks just like the fire heart ruby…” Images flashed in her mind of the day Spike had given it to her. Though I wouldn’t admit it then, it was his heart he’d given me on that day. She thought while using her pickaxe to remove the gem from the wall. Putting her tool away she used her unicorn magic to levitate the jewel in front of her. “I just need to clean it up a little.” She said placing the jewel inside of the saddlebag she had around her midsection.

Coming out of the cave the bright Equestrian sun greeted her. She took in a much-needed breath of fresh air. “Now I need to find the perfect time to give this to him.” She smiled and started trotting off for home.

Carousel Boutique came upon the horizon as Rarity made it back to Ponyville. Many ponies were out and about with the weather being so perfect. She kept her eye open for a particular dragon with green spines and purple scales. Slipping into her door she let out a sigh. “Made it.” She said in a breath. Removing her saddlebag, she pulled out the jewel. In the light, it had a radiant brilliance. “It looks so beautiful.” She held it in her magical aura while she pulled out the box she kept on her desk. Opening it she levitated her ruby beside the other that was held in the necklace she’d made. Images flashed in her mind of her and Spike wearing them together. She felt her heart skip a beat at the thought. We are just friends…aren’t we? This’ll mean something…more. She heard Spikes' voice in her mind. “We are only just friends…right?” Rarity found herself unable to answer that simple question. “Oh…my…”

When Spike woke up, he felt that something was different today. That today was going to be a turning point. He scratched the side of his head using his now longer arms. Trying to figure out what that could be, he came up with nothing. Checking the calendar, he did a facepalm. “Duh, it’s Hearts and Hooves Day, no wonder it feels so special.” Instantly the thought of a white mare popped into his head. “What gift could I even get Rarity?” His cheeks flushed red at a thought that came to mind. “It would be a gift after all, and it’s perfect, one that can’t be found or bought.”

It was midday before Spike made his way over to Carousel Boutique, he already knew that Rarity would be home. With his larger body, he found that walking around was much faster. He could have easily flown using larger his wings. “How am I going to say it?” He said to himself while he lifted a claw to the door.

Rarity was busy completing a few orders that had come in the previous day. As she trotted around her shop a particular necklace bounced on her neck. She enjoyed having it on. A knock on her door had her pausing in mid-step. That could be him. She was already dolled up for the day, yet to Spike, she always looked beautiful.

Spike waited outside; his frills perked up when he heard Rarity say. “I’ll be right there.” He heard a lift in her voice. That’s new.

Rarity opened the door and looked directly into the face of Spike. She was liking the fact that now she could look him eye to eye. “Hello Spike, I’ve been expecting you.”

“I come over every day.” He replied and caught sight of the fire heart ruby around her neck. He felt his front claw catch a bit on his other claw while he tried to walk inside. He was able to recover from his stumble.

Rarity had noticed and grinned. “Having issues Spikey?”

I’m falling for you isn’t that obvious? Spike thought. “You could say that my lady.” He reached out and ran his claw over the fire heart ruby catching her off guard. “I have a gift for you.”

Rarity gave him a head-to-toe look.

“You won’t find it on me. It’s a gift you can’t buy.” Spike said and went on. “My gift was given years ago.”

I knew it. Rarity thought and smiled.

Spike noticed the look in her eyes. I can tell you’ve figured that out. He ran his claw up the side of her neck and stopped on her cheek. “Can you guess my gift?”

Rarity felt her cheeks start to redden as her body shuddered at his touch. I can’t help it… Her thoughts trailed off. The heat of palm on her cheek felt so good. She took in a breath and summoned her unicorn magic and levitated a box that she knew Spike would recognize.

Spike watched her remove the lid and the item inside levitated out of the box. His jaw was about to hit the floor. “A blue sapphire heart…” Spike swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat.

Rarity noticed the tears in his eyes. “Spikey…” She smiled and used her magic to place the necklace that matched hers over his head and used her hooves to fasten it around his neck. Her sapphire eyes met his, she realized how close she was to him now. “You gave me yours, now I can give you mine-”

“Our hearts might be seen on the outside, but it’s what’s on the inside that counts,” Spike added when he cupped her other cheek with his other claw.

“Too true-”

Spike claimed her lips at that moment he felt his head spinning. Breaking the kiss, he said. “Happy Hearts and Hooves day.”

Rarity’s eyes widened. “I totally forgot.”

“Then let’s go out and celebrate.”
