Octavia comes home from a performance in Canterlot to find her roommate dabbling in NFTs

"Good heavens Vinyl! What are you doing on there?" Octavia asked, finally getting a reaction out of Vinyl as she glanced over to her.

"Just looking at this set of NFTs Tavi. No biggie." The blue haired DJ replied, going back to her typing.

"An NF- what?"

Vinyl buys an NFT

It was another cold evening in ponyville, the trees devoid of any leaves and crisp white snow blanketed the ground. Octavia Melody had only just finished her performance in Canterlot and was now heading home. Another stress filled day surrounded by snooty egotistical ponies who were no doubt judging her every move during the performance.

"Ah. Finally a well deserved break." Octavia sighed as she stepped off the train, cello case strapped to her back as she took in the familiar ponyville scenery, eager to get home.

"No doubt Vinyl has enjoyed time to herself." Octavia hummed to herself and she began the walk back to her place. Vinyl was always prone to carry out some insane experiment when Octavia wasn't around to keep her in check.

"Please. Please nothing too hectic this time." Octavia said, not in the mood for another week long cleaning session.

Reaching the house, Octavia carefully approached, her eyes scanning every inch of the outside. Nothing seemed off. At least not yet.

"Vinyl? I'm home." Octavia called out as she stepped inside her house, surprised to see everything was still well kept and in proper order.

"Hey Tav." Vinyl said back from the living room. She was sitting on the sofa, her eyes burned into her laptop screen.

Octavia gently placed down her cello and sighed softly, making her way to the kitchen to fix herself a snack after the long train ride. Maybe even a nice glass of red wine to lessen the stress of work.

"I applaud you Vinyl. I've been gone two weeks and the place is still spotless. Perhaps you've finally realized the importance of cleanliness, hm?" Octavia spoke, looking through the fridge for something she could fix for dinner.

"Vinyl?" Octavia said after a few moments, furrowing her brow after she didn't hear a response, looking up from the fridge to her roommate, who was still looking at her laptop and typing furiously.

"Good heavens Vinyl! What are you doing on there?" Octavia asked, finally getting a reaction out of Vinyl as she glanced over to her.

"Just looking at this set of NFTs Tavi. No biggie." The blue haired DJ replied, going back to her typing.

"An NF- what?" Octavia muttered, making her way to the sofa where Vinyl resided. Octavia had never been very tech savvy, and barely knew how to operate a computer herself. That had always been Vinyl’s territory.

"Come see for yourself!" Vinyl said, turning her laptop so Octavia could see.

Octavia paused when she saw what was on screen, her face morphing into a look of pure confusion. On screen was a collection of rather unsightly monkey pictures. All looking the same with only slight variations in either clothing or color.

"...Vinyl. What am I looking at?" Octavia finally managed to say. Vinyl only giving a small laugh in response.

"An NFT Tavi! Non Fungible Token. It's a goldmine!" Vinyl said with a smug look on her face. "This sucker doesn't know how much of a steal this is!"

"A steal? What on Earth are you on about? What is the point of looking at such ghastly pictures?" Octavia asked, her mind going blank as she tried to figure out why such a thing even existed.

"Oh I'm not just looking Tavi! I'm making the best financial decision of our lives! I've been swiping this guy's whole collection of Bored Apes! I have sole ownership of almost all of them!" Vinyl boasted. "Once I buy these last couple NFTs. The opportunities are endless!"

Octavia stopped in her tracks and her eyes widened. "Did you just say. Buy? Vinyl why- how much do these things cost??" Octavia asked, her voice and tone getting noticeably louder and more irritated.

Vinyl immediately noticed this and chuckled nervously, scooting on the other end of the sofa. "Octavia. Don't be mad but-"

"But what?" Octavia said, leaning towards her roommate with a murderous look in her eyes.

"I kindaaa used all of our savings buying these." Vinyl mumbled, not even daring to look Octavia in the eye as she answered her.

"B-But I promise it'll all work out! This guy is totally legit! And the resale value is gonna be-" Vinyl was cut off by the sound of a vase shattering against the wall, nearly hitting her head.

"YOU SPENT ALL OUR MONEY ON MONKEY PICTURES?" Octavia yelled in a blood curdling voice, hurling everything she could get her hooves on at a frantic and horrified Vinyl.

"Tavi stop! I have sole ownership! I can sell them and- OH CELESTIA NOT THE FACE." Vinyl cried as she dived off the sofa, barely dodging her turntables being lobbed at her by the anger filled Earth Pony.

"THE ONLY THING YOU'LL HAVE SOLE OWNERSHIP OF IS YOUR BLOODY TOMBSTONE VINYL." Octavia hollered, reaching for the coffee table that was resting next to her.

Vinyl could only watch in terror as the table flew towards her, about to completely annihilate her face, and just about every other part of her body.

"I'll never mess with NFTs again." She whispered, right as the coffee table collided with her, sending her crashing through the window behind her, and causing her to blackout.

A few weeks went by. Vinyl had spent that time recovering in the hospital, promising Octavia she'd earn back all their savings, as well as relieving them of the crippling debt the hospital bill was surely going to give them. Vinyl groaned as she stared down a now hiring ad for the newly opened HayBurger in Ponyville.

"Looks like I'll be working at HayBurger until the day I die." Vinyl groaned, Octavia simply smiling as she gave Vinyl a rather hard slap on the back, causing her to wince in pain.

"Seems that way. I hope you've learned something out of all this NFT nonsense." Octavia said, putting a hoof to her face in disappointment.

"I need a nap." She grumbled, leaving Vinyl to sit alone in her Hospital bed with her thoughts, and the image of those NFTs now forever haunting her.
